Moving the South Pole - Sixty Symbols

4777 ratings | 167125 views
Each year the geographic south pole marker is moved (and replaced) as the Antarctic ice slides across the continent. This year we had a man on the scene - astrophysicist Denis Barkats. More videos from Denis at the pole are coming soon. Visit our website at http://www.sixtysymbols.com/ We're on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/sixtysymbols And Twitter at http://twitter.com/sixtysymbols This project features scientists from The University of Nottingham http://bit.ly/NottsPhysics Sixty Symbols videos by Brady Haran http://www.bradyharanblog.com Email list: http://eepurl.com/YdjL9

i got ur pole marker...

And if you grab the pole, and hold on very tightly, you can slow the Earth down. lol

New year, new pole marker in the South Pole!
LBBstore (1 year ago)
I can see the Earth's curve in the hallway! Cool...
Steve Allerding (1 year ago)
Having spent 2015 as the physician at The South Pole Station, I was delighted to find this video. The man who designed and fabricated the new 2016 pole marker was an Australian named Anton Brown and a friend of mine. Anton, sadly, died in 2017 at the age of 57 but he has, certainly, left his mark on the history books at The South Pole. The man who unveils the new pole marker is Craig Knott, another friend of mine, who was the Station Manager for 2016. The names of all of the 2015 Winter-Over team are engraved on the "ring" of the marker and you can see my name (Allerding) on the close-up view of it. Very cool!! Thank you for covering this, once-a-year event, Denis.

Wow, what an amazing experience. Thanks for letting us know about these extra details. Rest in peace Anton Brown.

Whats with the US flag only? Usually theres a bunch of flags around the pole every other time I've seen it
Echo Smyth (1 year ago)
That awkward moment when you realize the previous year's marker is way cooler than the new marker, but you feel compelled to say, "Oooo" and "ahhhh" anyway.

The wording of what this means is shifty as if they don't want people to understand what it means. The south pole moves each year because magnetic north moves & over the past 25+ years it has moved far more dramatically than in 100 or 1000's of years which is something that will have the effect of shifting weather patterns/shorelines & melting ice like what is happening at magnetic north. The Earth as a planet is leaving a mini-ice age which ended around 1860 the point at which they always show charts of to emotionally charge people without them realizing the full scale of which they speak.

Go to the station store there on the first level, buy you a pack of smoke's, walk out DZ (Destination Zulu) smoke the whole thing and flick all the cigarette butts over the railing!!!!!!!!
DANG JOS (2 years ago)
But what day was this?
Rocksolid64 (2 years ago)
Are you saying that the earth has a wobble?? How come the North Pole star never changes position. Surely the north end of the earth would shift also?
Sixty Symbols (2 years ago)
the wobble issue is something else entirely - the movement this video is interested in is caused by the ice sheet sliding over the fixed land (and pole) itself!
unknown (2 years ago)
1:00 Why is the ice moving? Where does it start? Where does it end?
Louis manning (2 years ago)
That's not the South Pole.

Dirt Muhgert (2 years ago)
but, where is the entrance to the hollow earth? i saw about that on some other YouTube vids and they said it was real. the internet never lies 😁

I'm going to take that marker when no one is looking, and move it to New York... Just to mess up everyone's GPS.

pole dance opportunity missed.
ericsbuds (2 years ago)
ten meters a year! i would think it would be impossible to have any permanent structures there.
Jeremy Joe (2 years ago)
I'm actually quite surprised how little clothing they had. No head-cover, jeans? One would think that it is colder on the South pole, but I guess that's not true during summer? :D
Matt Fish (2 years ago)
Oh yeah, "Big Deal". You South Pole people all think the world revolves around you. Well, I guess it does kind of... Cool.. Ice Cool.

Jupiter has a ring as well. In fact, all gas giants have rings, but Saturn's is the most prominent and visible.
DANG JOS (2 years ago)
Where are my FLAT-EARTHERS! I'm not one, just wondering if any are here haha
DANG JOS (2 years ago)
+David Vasana Thach lol
David Vasana Thach (2 years ago)
Dude. Maths is all CGI anyway.
DANG JOS (2 years ago)
+David Vasana Thach They gave up long before imaginary numbers. Trust me, I kid you not, some of them actually claim that Pythagoras's theorem is part of the conspiracy now. So you may not be able to use much math at all
David Vasana Thach (2 years ago)
Ha, too much math for them. I guess the flat Earthers called it quits at imaginary numbers. Also must have thought that the math(s) elite conspired to keep tau to themselves letting us use only pi.
DANG JOS (2 years ago)
+David Vasana Thach I guess I shouldn't expect them on a Sixty Symbols video

s0me1up (2 years ago)
how about they put a marker on the electro-magnetic south pole :3 ....and have fun hunting it down every year in a new location
David de Kloet (2 years ago)
Jupiter also has rings.
TheNightWatch001 (2 years ago)
This is what makes youtube awesome. The south pole is 9000 miles away from me, yet I felt like I was right there... Brady, more videos from cool places. LHC... check. VLT... check. South Pole... check (sort of). Next up, Mauna Kea and then ISS.
Josh LZK (2 years ago)
What'll happen when they run out of ice to stick it on because the Antactic ice has slid so far the geographic pole's in the water? o.O
Kevin D (2 years ago)
Would be funny if the position moved inside a building.
unknown (2 years ago)
The building moves on the ice too.

ok good. the most important question was answered... does the hair stay with the hat. yes. yes it does.
marchhare (2 years ago)
Does it move mostly because the ice under it is moving (as implied by the video) or does the "wobble" of the Earth's rotation come into it somehow?
Atomic Frog (2 years ago)
I thought these markers had to be red and white stripy poles. Or have cartoons grossly misinformed me?
wingracer 16 (2 years ago)
+Kroo zA The gubmint keeps that one hidden. They put this one a few miles away to fool us so we don't realize Bugs Bunny rules the world.

the earth is flat. everything revolves around the north star/north pole.
John Mastroligulano (1 year ago)
Take it to the next level Earth/us the environment itself is already ai/artificial construct which is why in scale it is flat also why long ago people had the perception they did along with being able to see what they shouldn't have been able to. That is when you build a simulation/game at first it has less dimensions & everything would have been much closer & as you expand the programs/people with-in the construct would perceive the expansion as they are though many have tried to keep their ego(skewing data to elevate themselves temporarily) on the scale pardon the pun.

John Michaelson (2 years ago)
+marlonyo Wouldn't matter, they just call it fake like they call everything else fake.

Put a piece of bread on top of the south pole marker, and a piece of bread on the north pole marker, somewhere on the bottom of the sea. You have now made an earth sandwich!
gilles lebrun (2 years ago)
Earth's circumference 40075 km. / 24 hrs. = 1669.8 km./hr. at equator; Earth's circ. at axis of rotation 0.00 / 24 hrs. = 0 km./hr. Voila!

Earth is flat
Ben Mercer (2 years ago)
+johnaa007 debating with flat earthers is pointless, because you refuse to question your religious beliefs or made up flat earth model. I've been down this road before and it's irritating. for example, the sunset does not look at all like in the flat earth model. and in that model, one could always see the sun, it would just look like a bright star. and your model doesn't explain a lunar eclipse. nor why stars rotate counter clockwise in the southern hemisphere. nor why I can't see the same stars in both hemispheres, and the constellations I can see in both are in a different position in the southern hemisphere. your flat model just doesn't match what I see, and because I DO question everything, I reject your flat model.
johnaa007 (2 years ago)
How do we know it's round. Hmmm
Ben Mercer (2 years ago)
+johnaa007 question what I can ascertain with my own 2 eyes? you make no sense. the earth is obviously a sphere, no one has to tell me that. should I question that cars exist? or the moon? or even me? maybe mirrors are lying to me, and I'm really a house. maybe my phone im typing on is really a balloon. anything is possible to you apparently.
johnaa007 (2 years ago)
+Ben Mercer why not question it. people are so used they don't question anything or think for themselves
einarshehe (2 years ago)
i read that the average temperature in antarctica is -50 degrees.. by the way they are dressed in the video it seems its -10 max?
Andrew Ahern (2 years ago)
Kinda lame that they remove them. It'd be cool if there was a line of markers showing movement over time.
ATLANTIS (2 years ago)
+Andrew Ahern - And then after a hundred years the pole would get lost within a century sea of poles and clutter... "Which pole was it again man?"
shomolya (2 years ago)

It's BS that they put a US flag there! The U.S doesn't own everything!
SquirrelFromGradLife (2 years ago)
Strike one for the SJW'ers... making the world a hellhole one comment at a time! They better go back and get the flags off the Moon right...
Melethasgar (2 years ago)
+John Michaelson - I would argue that the flag wasn't flying on any station. You must know what message a US flag planted feet away from the Geographic South Pole is sending, and you should not be ok with it.
John Michaelson (2 years ago)
+The Proud Sun Bro. They built and own that station. But I'm guessing you have no problems with any other flags flying on other stations in Antarctica, huh.
Mad Lad (2 years ago)
'Murica thinks they (we? I'm American) own everything lol. Flag on the moon. Flag on the pole. Flag on every single house in America. Flag on cars. Flag on each conquered mountain. I have no problems with America, I just think it's kind of funny
gilles lebrun (2 years ago)
At the point of rotation, one weighs a little more than at Equator and at zero speed of rotation relative to space!
Melethasgar (2 years ago)
+gilles lebrun - What do you mean by "and at zero speed of rotation relative to space?"
SJ NM (2 years ago)
That was cool.
The new southpole marker shape is a globe to bring awareness to the flat earther problem and the need for better education of the masses in NorthAmerica ...this whole video is a great KnockOut blow to all flat earthers here on youtube
Melethasgar (2 years ago)
+TheBestYoutubeChannelEverTimesInfinity - I wouldn't say "great KnockOut blow" as it doesn't prove that they're wrong.

Peter OByrne (2 years ago)
What's the difference in relative velocity from the pole vs the equator?
John Michaelson (2 years ago)
+Peter OByrne It's ~10,000 km from the pole to the equator and the change isn't linear. At the equator it's ~1670 kph. The speed anywhere else is 1670 * cos(latitude).
Melethasgar (2 years ago)
+Peter OByrne - My bad, I meant (~)1,040 mi/h, so ~1,670 km/h. Also 1,040 km/h would make ~0.1 km/h difference for every km you travel north or south, wouldn't it?
Peter OByrne (2 years ago)
+Melethasgar So...I think that means ~10 km/hr difference for every km you travel north or south. That seems incredible.
Melethasgar (2 years ago)
+Peter OByrne - I believe there's a 1040km/h difference.
mindSET (2 years ago)
Useless exercise. I'm still not buying the act. I doubt any of the research done there is actually useful. It's probably just greedy oil prospectors trying to circumvent the south poles protection laws.
