Hey! Thanks so much for the tutorial and pattern! I have two questions! 1: I bought the 2 part epoxy, but one side is very white while the other is clear and yours shows two fairly clear liquids. When I mix them, it’s very thick and sticky and I can’t make the rivet dots well, is there another thing I could use you could recommend? I tested hot glue, but it’s hard not to get it stringy. 2: when I cut out the patter I had the brim and vertical part fit together great, but when I went to attach the top part it was too big. I definitely double checked I cut the right pattern, but was just curious if you had any thoughts? I am using a thin mat, 3mm (cm?🤔), because I accidentally bought the wrong size and decided to give it a go anyhow. 😁 Thanks for the help!
Lost Wax (1 month ago)
Yeah, there are so many different types of 2 part epoxy out there. There are a couple other options 1- tiny googly eyes that you can get at a craft store, just glue them on. 2- punch foam circles with a hole punch and glue them on 3- use 3d fabric paint to add little dots. I think the reason the top was too big is that you are using much thinner foam. The thicker foam adds more to the diameter of the circle to take up that space. The good thing is that it's better to be too big than too small, just trim it down and you should be alright. -Chris

And paint it black. becaaauuusee... black looks cool. You could choose a different color if you wanted your hat to look silly. Literally me choosing clothing

Any reason I can't use hot glue instead of contact cement??
Lost Wax (3 months ago)
No, you can definitely use hot glue. I stopped using contact cement when I moved to Canada and couldn't use it outside anymore (brrr) I have been really happy with how well it works with the foam. If you watch some of my more recent videos, you can see the techniques I use with the hot glue.

almost 1.2 mil views...about 800 u.s. minus youtube fees so 650 u.s. dollars for making a hat out of foam mat. i am in the wrong business...I think I will quit my job in law and start making dumb youtube videos . seems to pay better.
Lost Wax (4 months ago)
Sure, give it a go! It's a lot of fun, but also like every other job, a lot of time and a lot of hard work. As far as getting paid good money from advertising revenue- I work full time at this and make about $100 USD a month from advertising on all my videos combined. So......

You missed the step where you get your a$$ kicked for cutting up that mat. Overall, this tutorial was BRILLIANT

Glarbz (6 months ago)
Lost Wax Thank you so much for the reply!

You can, I haven't had much luck getting proper sized blobs though. Other options are: small googley eyes, small foam discs, and 3d fabric paint.

Thank You So Much ! LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! Just wanted to ask I couldn't find that metallic paint so got silver acrylic would it work fine that way you rubbed it with your fingers?
Lost Wax (6 months ago)
Yes, it will work, if you watch some of my newer videos you can see how I use metallic acrylic paints for this purpose. Works great.

I just bought your ULTIMATE everything package. I cant wait to get it in the email. One thing though. I wanted to sign up for updates but I identify as a robot. it wont let robots join😢
Lost Wax (7 months ago)
You should get the email with the download link almost right away, so if you don't get it, have a look to see if it got caught by your junk/spam filters. Let me know if it doesn't show up. You can email me at [email protected] That's weird about not being able to sign up, there should be a thing where you click a bunch of pictures to prove you're not a robot. Maybe try with a different browser or open an incognito window and try again.

wishuponme20 (10 months ago)
Why didn't you spray paint the black on the hat?
Lost Wax (9 months ago)
I like the texture that builds up as you add layers of acrylic paint. It makes all the difference when you go to add the metallic paint, because it adds tiny ridges and valleys, so that the metallic paint doesn't cover everything.

Is there a written list of the items needed for this? I am having a hard time hearing... What is the name of the golden stuff you rub on...? And I notice the main hat is made with thicker foam. How thick is it?
Lost Wax (11 months ago)
If you turn on the captions, you should be able to see the list of supplies. The Gold stuff is called Rub N Buff. The main hat is made with 8mm thick foamThanks for watching!

What is the brown thing you put at the end?
Lost Wax (11 months ago)
Are you referring to the stuff I use to make it look metallic? I used a product called "Rub N' Buff" which is a tube of metallic paste that you rub over top to get the metal look. I now prefer using DecoArt Metallic wax pastes, as they are water based, and slightly easier to apply. You can check both of these out on my website here: http://www.lostwaxoz.com/product-links/

Would the art foam pieces do the same thing as the yoga mat?
Lost Wax (1 year ago)
I'm not really sure- that's why I ended up with the foam, it's the cheapest thing I could find..... I did make my first one out of stiff cardboard, but it was really uncomfortable.
Danielle Kowalkowski (1 year ago)
Lost Wax What else do you recomend thats not too expensive?
Lost Wax (1 year ago)
You kinda need some sort of thicker foam as a base, otherwise the hat is gonna be too floppy.
GULIVERIS Lt (1 year ago)

hat size for a peanut lol any way to scale it up to decent hat size over a 8 ?
rsa420 (1 year ago)
Yeah it does I thank you I did not check it properly
Lost Wax (1 year ago)
Ah, I see what you are saying:) Yes, the pattern goes above a size 8. I believe a size 8 is 63.5cm, The pattern has sizes that go up to 69cm. Hope that helps!
rsa420 (1 year ago)
8 1/8 is one of the biggest i have met in person(thats mine skin head no hair)
Lost Wax (1 year ago)
I am thinking maybe the program you printed from automatically resized the pattern to fit the paper. Because this pattern is made to fit on either A4 or U.S. letter paper, make sure you set the scale to 100% or check the "print actual size button" This pattern can fit some pretty large heads!

I wonder if I use leather and real rivets :O
WPXTacoMan477 (1 year ago)
If I find time , I may make a real sheet metal version of this hat (: 🎩
Lost Wax (1 year ago)
Hehe, That's where I originally came up with this design, I wanted to make a copper hat that was all riveted together, but realised how heavy and uncomfortable it would be, so I ended up with foam. If you do make one, I'd really love to see it, it would be amazing!

Robin Hoodlum (1 year ago)
Time/headache saving tip: I had a heckuva time using the epoxy. It was curing too quickly and my rivets were coming out stringy and not at all like I'd hoped. I used Ranger's glossy accents, which dries clear and has a needle tip bottle for dispensing. It worked amazingly well, and very quick. It's a fantastic adhesive for dimensional elements as well. You can purchase it at any scrapbook store or at Michaels and it goes a long way.
Lost Wax (1 year ago)
Thanks for the tip, I'll have to check that out. Some people really like the epoxy, but others hate it, so it's good to have options.

I can't find any mats that don't have textures on them.
Lost Wax (1 year ago)
Yeah, that can be a problem. If you are planning on covering it with the foam squares, it's not so bad though. I think the first link on my supplies page has a foam mat that is plain on both sides. http://www.lostwaxoz.com/product-links/

Could I use this idea on a real top hat?
Lost Wax (1 year ago)
You could, but if it's already a cool old tophat, you probably want to keep it as it is.

isnt the apoxy thingy a litle toxic or something? coz im kinda stressed. could anyone tell me if there is an actual risk? apoxyic toxic lol
Lost Wax (1 year ago)
I think it depends a lot on which epoxy you use- generally it is the hardener that can be toxic, and there are different types of hardener. As with any chemical use, it is important to be safe, avoid skin contact and avoid breathing the fumes. You can make the rivets other ways as well, the tiny google eyes work well if you glue them on- they create nice even rivets, or punch a whole bunch of little discs from foam and glue them on. Also people have had luck with 3d fabric paint. Hope that helps!
Eric Lasver (1 year ago)
I just have a question please, are the patterns too big to print from a normal printer and would I need to use a bigger printer or does it fit in a normal sized printer!
Eric Lasver (1 year ago)
Lost Wax thank you this helped a lot !
Lost Wax (1 year ago)
The patterns are made to be printed on a normal size printer. If there are any that need to be larger, I make them so you print the pages on a normal printer, then tape them together to make the pattern piece. Just make sure to always check the "print actual size" box when printing so your computer doesn't scale them down.
