Jonathan Swift, Satire, and Gulliver's Travels Lesson
Don't forget to hit the Like and Subscribe videos to make sure you receive notifications about upcoming Literature, Grammar, Reading, Writing, and World History lessons from MrBrayman.Info. This lesson gives students background information on Jonathan Swift, a conceptual introduction to satire, and background knowledge on Gulliver's Travels, especially Part 4. It's a good lesson to use before "A Modest Proposal" too. Below is the outline of the slides used in the lesson: Jonathan Swift, Satire, and Gulliver's Travels Lesson Biography of Swift Satire—Definition and Examples Background of Gulliver's Travels Connections to the Project Jonathan Swift, 1667-1745 Born in Ireland of English, Anglican parents At a time when tensions between England and Ireland were high for political and religious reasons Conflicts with the English government over his family's politics after the English Civil War and over his writing Had a great sympathy for the Irish—became somewhat of a member of both cultures Became the Dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin Satire A literary form (poetry, prose, or drama) that exaggerates tendencies to make people laugh as a form of protest Uses humor as a weapon A more enlightened form of sarcasm Can be subtle or blatant, and can be serious or silly Examples of Satire How Satire Works Literal Satire: looks, feels, seems just like realistic art, but little things are exaggerated to show how ridiculous they are Unrealistic Satire (like Gulliver's Travels): fantastic places and unrealistic settings serve as metaphors for the world we live in When people laugh, they are more relaxed and willing to engage with a speaker or artist When people see things that aren't them but who do the same things they do, they can look at those things more objectively Gulliver's Travels Travel narrative—Lemuel Gulliver goes to four places: Liliput—the land of the small people Brobdingnag—the land of the giants Laputa—the land of the "scientists" The Land of the Houyhnhnms—talking horses who have more reason than men Gulliver's Travels Liliput—Swift makes fun of people's pettiness; for example, two political parties fight furiously over which end of an egg should be cracked Brobdingnag—By encountering giant humans, Gulliver shows us just how disgusting people are Laputa—The scientists of Laputa are so busy with all of their imaginary learning that their wives go astray Gulliver's Travels The Land of the Houyhnhnms In comparison to humans, horses seem very wise, just, and reasonable—so much for the Enlightenment Gulliver comes to identify with the horses and not the Yahoos—a race of human-ish creatures that have all of humanity's worst qualities What is a human? What is an animal? Are humans all that great? Connection to the Project Swift shows us slavery, racism, and genocide, and he asks us questions about all of them He makes us question the Enlightenment and the very idea of civilization and who is civilized Like many Enlightenment thinkers, he realized that Europe needed to humble itself Lesson Completed—Good Job I have provided a read-along for this Be prepared to write about satirical episodes in the selections from the book that I have given you—like a metaphor, what's the tenor and what's the vehicle, and what's Swift's purpose for the satire?

Gulliver's Travels - Classic Films
Guliver's Travels is a multiple Oscar nominated animation feature based on the Lilliputian adventures of Lemuel Gulliver in the story by Jonathan Swift. Animation, song writing and storytelling all come together in this classic Fleischer Studios film from the golden age of animation. You will be absorbed by the narrative; taken-in by the visuals; and carried away by the unforgettable music as you follow Gulliver's adventures in the land of Lilliput. The songs "We're All Together Now", "All's Well", "It's A Hap Hap Happy Day", "Bluebirds In The Moonlight", and "Come Home Again, Sailor Man" are wonderful and flow seamlessly into the film. GULLIVER's TRAVELS by JONATHAN SWIFT "Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver. First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships" is a classic novel by Jonathan Swift, first published in 1726. Better known simply as "Gulliver's Travels" it describes the four remarkable voyages of Lemuel Gulliver, a kindly ship's surgeon. In Lilliput, he is a giant observing tiny people; in Brobdingnag, Gulliver is the tiny person in a land of giants; in Laputa, Gulliver observes a land of philosophers so lost in thought they can't see the simplest practical details; and the fourth and final voyage takes him to the land ruled by wise and gentle horses or Houyhnhnms and peopled by wild, beastly human-like creatures called Yahoos. Gulliver's Travels - Laputa to the Houyhnhnms "Black Screen"Audiobook
From Laputa, Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Glubbdubdrib and Japan to Houyhnhnms A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Glubbdubdrib and Japan by Jonathan Swift A Voyage to the Land of the Houyhnhnms by Jonathan Swift Jonathan Swift (30 November 1667 – 19 October 1745) was an Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer (first for the Whigs, then for the Tories), poet and cleric who became Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. Swift is remembered for works such as A Tale of a Tub (1704), An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity (1712), Gulliver's Travels (1726), and A Modest Proposal (1729). He is regarded by the Encyclopædia Britannica as the foremost prose satirist in the English language, and is less well known for his poetry. He originally published all of his works under pseudonyms – such as Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, M. B. Drapier – or anonymously. He was a master of two styles of satire, the Horatian and Juvenalian styles. Gulliver's Travels
Interactive Drama illustrated by schools students, Gulliver's Travels based on a book by Jonathan Swift which emerged as a famous folk story of all times, which will be encouraged by people of all age groups. Story in Short The first voyage is to Lilliput, where Gulliver is huge and the Lilliputians are small. At first the Lilliputians seem amiable, but the reader soon sees them for the ridiculous and petty creatures they are. Gulliver is convicted of treason for "making water" in the capital (even though he was putting out a fire and saving countless lives)--among other "crimes." The second voyage is to Brobdingnag, a land of Giants where Gulliver seems as small as the Lilliputians were to him. Gulliver is afraid, but his keepers are surprisingly gentle. He is humiliated by the King when he is made to see the difference between how England is and how it ought to be. Gulliver realizes how revolting he must have seemed to the Lilliputians. Gulliver's third voyage is to Laputa (and neighboring Luggnagg and Glubdugdribb). In a visit to the island of Glubdugdribb, Gulliver is able to call up the dead and discovers the deceptions of history. In Laputa, the people are over-thinkers and are ridiculous in other ways. Also, he meets the Stuldbrugs, a race endowed with immortality. Gulliver discovers that they are miserable. His fourth voyage is to the land of the Houyhnhnms, who are horses endowed with reason. Their rational, clean, and simple society is contrasted with the filthiness and brutality of the Yahoos, beasts in human shape. Gulliver reluctantly comes to recognize their human vices. Gulliver stays with the Houyhnhnms for several years, becoming completely enamored with them to the point that he never wants to leave. When he is told that the time has come for him to leave the island, Gulliver faints from grief. Upon returning to England, Gulliver feels disgusted about other humans, including his own family.

Major Characters in Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift
This video analyses the major characters of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. ... Written by Ohidur Rahman & Voiced by IVONA British Brian. ... Lemuel Gulliver. —a bold adventurer—visits a multitude of strange lands—stills difficult to regard him as truly heroic —even well before his slide going into a worse state, often through lack of control or care into misanthropy disliking other people and avoiding involvement with society at the end of the book—simply does not show the stuff of which grand heroes are made —not cowardly—on the contrary—undergoes the unnerving experiences of nearly being devoured by a giant rat, taken captive by pirates, shipwrecked on faraway shores, sexually assaulted by an 11-year-old girl, and shot in the face with poison arrows —additionally—isolation from humanity he endures for 16 years must be hard to bear, though rarely talks about such matters —yet despite the courage he shows throughout voyages, character lacks basic greatness —impression could be due to the fact—rarely shows feelings, reveals soul, or experiences great passions of any sort —but other literary adventurers, like Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey, seem heroic without being particularly open about their emotions —what seems most lacking is not courage or feelings, but drive —one modern critic has described Gulliver as possessing the smallest will in all of Western literature—simply devoid of a sense of mission, a goal that would make his wandering into a quest —Odysseus’s goal is to get home again, Aeneas’s goal in Virgil’s Aeneid is to found Rome, but Gulliver’s goal on his sea voyage is uncertain —says—needs to make some money after the failure of his business, but rarely mentions finances throughout the work and indeed almost never even mentions home —has no awareness of any greatness in what he is doing or what he is working toward —in short—has no aspirations —leaves home on his travels for the 1st time—gives no impression—regards himself as undertaking a great endeavor or embarking going onto a ship on a thrilling new challenge —we may also note Gulliver’s lack of ingenuity and savvy practical knowledge and ability —other great travelers, such as Odysseus, get themselves out of dangerous situations by exercising their wit and ability to trick others —seems too dull for any battles of wit and too unimaginative to think up tricks, and thus ends up being passive in most of the situations in which finds himself —held captive several times throughout voyages, but never once released through his own stratagems a carefully planned way of achieving or dealing with something, often involving a trick, relying instead on chance factors for his liberation —once presented with a way out—works hard to escape, as when repairs the boat he finds that delivers him from Blefuscu, but is never actively ingenious in attaining freedom —example summarizes quite well his intelligence, which is factual and practical rather than imaginative or introspective —gullible easily deceived or tricked, and too willing to believe everything that other people say, as his name suggests —for example—misses the obvious ways in which the Lilliputians exploit him —while quite adept at navigational calculations and the humdrum having no excitement, interest or new and different events; ordinary details of seafaring connected with travelling by sea —far less able to reflect on himself or his nation in any profoundly critical way —traveling to such different countries and returning to England in between each voyage, he seems poised showing very calm and controlled behaviour to make some great anthropological the study of the human race, its culture and society and its physical development speculations when you guess possible answers to a question without having enough information to be certain about cultural differences around the world, about how societies are similar despite their variations or different despite their similarities —but, frustratingly, gives us nothing of the sort—provides us only with literal facts and narrative events, never with any generalizing or philosophizing—a self-hating, self-proclaimed Yahoo at the end, announcing his misanthropy quite loudly, but even this attitude is difficult to accept as the moral of the story —not a figure with whom we identify but, rather, part of the array a large group of things or people, especially one which is attractive or causes admiration and often one which has been positioned in a particular way of personalities and behaviors about which we must make judgments The Queen of Brobdingnag —hardly a well-developed character but important in one sense—one of the very few females given much notice —Gulliver’s own wife is scarcely even mentioned, even at what one would expect to be the touching moment of homecoming at the end of the 4th voyage

"As these Noble Houyhnhms are endowed by Nature with a general Disposition to all Virtues, and have no Conceptions or Ideas of what is Evil in a Rational Creature..." "By what I could discover, the Yahoos appear to be the most unteachable of all Animals... for they are cunning, malicious, treacherous and revengeful." Christian Wernicke and Christian Kütemeier certainly show this to be the case with their sensitive and virtuosic performances of original works and arrangements from two diff erent centuries. © 2011 SPEKTRAL ℗ 2011 SPEKTRAL
