Tiny Studio Apartment - Sleeping Loft and Moving Staircase (Zoku)
See floorplan in blog post: http://tinyurl.com/tiny-studio-zoku More home tours: http://tinyurl.com/small-spaces-playlist A month ago we visited this cool tiny studio apartment in Amsterdam. This space is called Zoku, and it is a huge building with more than 100 small apartments for tiny living, and this is what they look like. They are designed for online nomads, and people who travel frequently, to have a micro apartment space to dwell inside the city center of Amsterdam. It's connected to a shared office space / co-working space in the heart of Amsterdam, to make it easy to network and work during the stay. These tiny apartments can be rented short or long-term, making them the perfect substitute to hotel rooms. The architects and idea people behind this concept really thought this design through. The whole idea of the sliding staircase that leads up to the loft space is just genius. You find everything you need from a tiny bathroom / toilet, kitchen, dining area and a sleeping loft, you can access from the sliding staircase. The loft part of the apartment doesn't seem like it's there when the blinds are closed. If you want more examples of compact living and small spaces, check out our playlist, with lots of spaces from all over the world: http://tinyurl.com/small-spaces-playlist Music credits: Used with permission from https://brokeforfree.bandcamp.com/ http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode Juparo https://brokeforfree.bandcamp.com/track/juparo Hart Ache https://brokeforfree.bandcamp.com/track/heart-ache

Locating the owners can sometimes be a challenge, so special forces have been hired… And remember: if it happens to you, the KLM Social Media team is always there for you on Facebook and Twitter! http://www.klm.com http://www.facebook.com/klm http://www.twitter.com/klm https://www.linkedin.com/company/klm ---- Transcript: Yes, it's a lot of fun. Personally I think he is a real asset to the company. And he can really do something no one else can. Our main goal is to return lost items to the owner. As fast as possible. To do that, we monitor social media. And the crew checks the plane after every flight. I really like the fact that we are now getting some help with that. We train for muscle strength, endurance, and of course socialization. When you see the reactions of the passengers that really is amazing. He drops by regularly but I have to admit: I do spoil him a bit.

Paul Virilio. Style of the Real. 2009.
http://www.egs.edu/ Paul Virilio, French philosopher, talking about style, art, real, and acceleration. In the lecture Paul Virilio discusses the concepts of excessive real, humility, university of disaster, non-knowledge, speed, aesthetics of disappearance, in relationship to Lyotard, Zizek, Stoics, Franciscan, focusing on individualism, collectivism, and ecology. Public open lecture for the students and faculty of the European Graduate School EGS Media and Communication Studies department program. Saas-Fee Switzerland Europe. 2009 Paul Virilio. "Paul Virilio was born in Paris in 1932. After training at the Ecole des Metiers d' Art, Virilio specialised in stained-glass artwork, and worked alongside Matisse in churches in Paris. In 1950, he converted to Christianity. After being conscripted into the army during the Algerian war of independence, Virilio studied phenomenology with Merleau-Ponty at the Sorbonne. In 1958, Virilio conducted a phenomenological enquiry into military space and the organization of territory, particularly concerning the Atlantic Wall—the 15,000 Nazi bunkers built during World War II along the coastline of France and designed to repel any Allied assault. In 1963 he began collaborating with the architect Claude Parent and formed the Architecture Principe group. After participating in the May 1968 uprising in Paris, Virilio was nominated Professor by the students at the Ecole Speciale d' Architecture. In 1973 be became Director of Studies. In the same year, Virilio became director of the magazine L'Espace Critique. In 1975 he co-organised the Bunker Archeologie exhibition at the Decorative Arts Museum in Paris, a collection of texts and images relating to the Atlantic Wall. Since then he has been widely published, translated and anthologised. In 1998, Virilio retired from teaching. Stephanie Schrader | Rembrandt and the Mughals
A talk by Dr. Stephanie Schrader, curator at the Department of Drawings at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Dr. Stephanie Schrader will address the 23 drawings Rembrandt made late in his career after Indian paintings that were imported into Amsterdam from Dutch trading post in Surat. Rembrandt’s portraits of Mughal rulers, princes, and courtiers demonstrate how his contact with Indian art inspired him to draw in a different style on Asian paper. Schrader argues that the Mughal compositions Rembrandt copied were not merely foreign curiosities, but carried with them specific associations of empire, trade, luxury, and exceptional artifice. Stephanie Schrader is curator at the Department of Drawings at the J. Paul Getty Museum, specialising in 16th to 18th century Dutch and Flemish art. Her interest in cross cultural exchanges include exhibitions, publications, lectures and classes on artists including Jan Gossaert, Maria Sibylla Merian and Peter Paul Rubens. Dr. Schrader is the editor of Rembrandt and the Inspiration of India, a sumptuously illustrated volume that examines the impact of Indian art and culture on Rembrandt (1606–1669) in the late 1650s. By pairing Rembrandt’s twenty-two extant drawings of Shah Jahan, Jahangir, Dara Shikoh, and other Mughal courtiers with Mughal paintings of similar compositions, the book critiques the prevailing notion that Rembrandt “brought life” to the static Mughal art. Written by scholars of both Dutch and Indian art, the essays in this volume instead demonstrate how Rembrandt’s contact with Mughal painting inspired him to draw in an entirely new, refined style on Asian paper—an approach that was shaped by the Dutch trade in Asia and prompted by the curiosity of a foreign culture. Seen in this light, Rembrandt’s engagement with India enriches our understanding of collecting in seventeenth-century Amsterdam, the Dutch global economy, and Rembrandt’s artistic self-fashioning. A close examination of the Mughal imperial workshop provides new insights into how Indian paintings came to Europe as well as how Dutch prints were incorporated into Mughal compositions. This volume is published to accompany an upcoming exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center March 13 to June 24, 2018. Armen Avanessian - Postcontemporary Angst and Fear
SONIC ACTS FESTIVAL - THE NOISE OF BEING Armen Avanessian - Postcontemporary Angst and Fear 25 February 2017 - De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam, The Netherlands --- Postcontemporary Angst and Fear The 21st century marks a new dimension of time itself. That the direction of time has changed is indicated by the prominence of various phenomena of preemption such as preemptive strikes, preemptive personalities, and preemptive policing. The media are increasingly occupied not with what happened or what is happening, but what could happen (premediation). This is a helpless symptom characterised by a general loss of a real, open future and present: we have lost the future as a political object. Avanessian argues that the systematic production of fear within neoliberal politics is symptomatic of the failure to grasp the speculative temporality arriving from the future. Instead of addressing our angst facing this new post-contemporary time-complex we stick to the increasingly regressive invention of feared objects. Armen Avanessian studied philosophy and political science in Vienna and Paris. After completing his dissertation in literature, he worked at the Free University Berlin from 2007-2014. He has previously been a Visiting Fellow in the German Department at Columbia University and in the German Department at Yale University and visiting professor at various art academies in Europe and the US. Avanessian is editor at large at Merve Verlag Berlin. In 2012 he founded a bilingual research platform on Speculative Poetics, including a series of events, translations and publications.

Extreme transformer home in Hong Kong: Gary Chang's 24 rooms in 1
Gary Chang has lived in the same 32 square meters (344 square feet) for nearly his entire life. Nearly 40 years ago, he moved into the tiny apartment with not only his parents and 3 younger sisters, but they rented a room to a tenant. During his childhood the space was divided into several small rooms- kitchen, bathrooms and 3 bedrooms (Chang slept on the couch). In 1988 when his family moved out (into something bigger), Chang bought the place from the landlord for $45,000 and began his experiments in small space design. Today, at first glance, the small space appears a fairly average open studio, but with pulls on handles, walls slide across steel tracks, Chang can have a "maximum kitchen", a guest bedroom, a library, dining room, laundry-room and even a spa: one walls slides to reveal an extra-large Duravit bathtub. His home is tricked out with a wall-sized movie screen, a shower with color therapy and massage that doubles as a steam room, but Chang argues that the moving walls are fairly low-tech. And while he can control his appliances with his smartphone he usually prefers the manual option. Chang is now an architect (Edge Design) with a focus on micro-apartments. *Cameraman Johnny Sanphillippo also films for the site Strong Towns: http://www.strongtowns.org/ Gary Chang's Edge Design: http://www.edgedesign.com.hk Original story: http://faircompanies.com/videos/view/extreme-transformer-in-hong-kong-gary-changs-24-rooms-in-1/

Lego-style apartment transforms into infinite spaces
Christian's hotel inspired by LEGO flat: https://youtu.be/MvJfN9jTS5s When Christian Schallert isn't cooking, dressing, sleeping or eating, his 24 square meter (258 square feet) apartment looks like an empty cube. To use a piece of furniture, he has to build it. Located in Barcelona's hip Born district, the tiny apartment is a remodeled pigeon loft. Designed by architect Barbara Appolloni, Christian says the space was inspired by the space-saving furniture aboard boats, as well as the clean lines of a small Japanese home. Christian sold his apartment and has reinvested his money and small space design ideas in opening a small hotel in Barcelona: www.hotelbrummell.com Christian Schallert, photographer: www.instagram.com/christianschallert Spanish-version tour with architect Barbara Appolloni: http://faircompanies.com/videos/view/un-mini-apartamento-que-se-transforma-en-infinitos-espacios/ Architect Barbara Appolloni: http://www.barbaraappolloni.com/works_christianHouse.html Original story here: http://faircompanies.com/videos/view/lego-style-apartment-transforms-into-infinite-spaces/

"Welcome to my world" Armin Morbach, fine art fashion | Phase One
Follow multi-talented photographer Armin Morbach on a creative shoot in his Hamburg studio while he shares his take on fashion art photography. Try Phase One: http://www.phaseone.com/demo Download Capture One: http://www.phaseone.com/download I am Armin Morbach. I am a photographer, an artist, a hairdresser and an editor-in-chief. Welcome to my world! This is Tush magazine and all the big secrets are happening here. Tush magazine started because I was fed up with stupid editors telling me what to do. That someone who never had a brush in their hands and never put a lipstick on told me what's trendy and what's not trendy. I said f*** it. I'll do my own. I called all my friends, all photographers. I called all the big models. Claudia Schiffer was on the cover. That's how it started. It's different because we concentrate on accessories, on beauty, on art photography. She is going to wear this top, she will be nude here but she will wear a string and I'll tape her to the floor on a glass plate. I always wanted to build a chair out of a woman's body but I can't do that myself so it may be better to do it in the picture. I want to get the position as low so that it looks like she is the chair but has no head. I was a hairdresser and one day a photographer didn't show up. Everything was dead so I took the camera and it just started. Twenty years next to the camera, it was just a little step to be behind the camera. I want to create my own way of seeing it because when you do hair for hours and the photographer clicks at the wrong moment, it pisses me off. I like to play with contrast where you don't know whether it is a man or a woman, where does this leg come from, why they used a garbage bag. It's hard to describe my own look because it's not pretty, it's not glamorous, but it has a certain style. Everything you see in my pictures is a part of me. Maybe it's hidden, maybe it's obvious, and maybe if I do glamorous hair it is very obvious I love that. It's something fetish and something I think looks cool, but it always has something to do with my personality. I did about 18 shots. That's enough. That's a lot for me. If I take a lot of pictures I take 20 but I think if you don't have it by the first 5, you will never get it. I have worked with photographers that do 400 and trust me; they always go with the first shots. I love to shoot in computer because I want to see exactly how it looks and if my vision is shown on the computer. I want those things that are glued on to look three-dimensional. I gave the idea to the makeup department and it came out like this today. You don't know if it is someone real or something fake and I like that. This is when art starts. Art starts when some people like it and some people don't. Then it becomes interesting. If you look through a magazine and you stop at this picture, it works. This catches you. If not mentally, then because you think it is sick. I started taking pictures not more than five years ago. Two years ago, one of the big collectors in Germany called and said: "I want to buy your art". This opened a door for me. I never thought that I would be an artist. This day changed my life. I could do whatever I wanted and it's good. I use Kino Flo and flashing for a short time so I get this effect on the picture. I was not happy when she walked on set but now I'm happy because she looks like a voodoo doll. I use the 35mm because this particular picture needs something weirder even though it's weird already. I love to work with the 50mm and 35mm. My favorite one is this one, the 120mm. Because everyone looks pretty I think. The 80mm I'm not a big fan of because everything gets really boring, but I like the 50mm because legs get longer and faces get strange. My new 35mm I like because it is something of a 60's lens because it was used a lot in this time. I'm very friendly but people know exactly when to stop. I can make jokes, I can be funny but when it comes to the picture, it's my decision. The little cameras drive me nuts because you go click-click-click and that's not my way of working. I'm very concentrated when I work. I look for the frame, I have the picture in my mind and I just click. Everyone who works for galleries say that we have to work in a bigger format otherwise it gets grainy. But that's not my style. Even if it's 2,50 high, I want to see every detail. I think everyone who sees this picture will laugh and that's exactly what I like about the picture. It's croissants, it's cookies, it's a cup of tea on a table cloth. In ten years I maybe want to open an organic bakery, maybe something else. I won't be a photographer for the rest of my life. This was my day. You saw enough of my secrets and I'll say bye-bye, Auf Wiedersehen, goodbye!

LEGO Hotel MOC (Classic Style Modular)
Here's an MOC that we've had in our work-in-progress shelf for some time now; originally designed to be a Grand Hotel the MOC started out as an exploration (an exploration that began before the development of our Victorian House) to test various types of classic style exterior features and builds. The Classic Style Hotel MOC features a Working Elevator, Large Lobby Area, entrance facade with glass awning, 2 Rooms, Top floor Restaurant with removable Skylight Roofs. Built on a 32x32 baseplate the Hotel MOC features standard connector pins to fit other modulars and is stands larger than the official LEGO Grand Emporium 10211 and Parisian Restaurant 10234. (as demo-ed in our video) Unfortunately the MOC still needs some major interior work so we're not sure if this MOC will ever be finished. Nonetheless we thought we share it our viewers so thoughts and comments are welcomed. Hope everyone enjoys it and find some inspiration for their next build. Art Department - Sun Comes Up (Original Mix) (No.19 Music / NO19043) OFFICIAL
Out now worldwide digitally iTunes: http://georiot.co/gkw Once more exciting things have been brewing in Art Department's studio over recent months. Not only are they to release a much-anticipated full length on Crosstown Rebels in 2014, but they have also finished a red-hot new single. The 'Sun Comes Up' is reportedly the last record produced in the vein of their first album before the acclaimed duo release a slew of new material. It comes complete with an equally compelling remix from Life & Death alumni and break through duo Mind Against. Despite another non-stop summer headlining festivals across the world, Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White have managed to find time to craft more emotive dancefloor gold in the form of 'Sun Comes Up' (whilst of course Jonny has continued to steer his No. 19 Music label through some of the biggest releases of the summer). The single revolves around the seamless interaction of a doleful and perfectly poised bassline and the rueful vocals of Kenny. The evocative pain in his genuinely soulful and languorous voice is matched by the stylish slouch of the arrangement. It's the sort of track that will provide beautifully tender moments on the dancefloor mid set, or will send revellers home with a dewy glint in their eye, glowing as it does with a muted golden hue. Remixers Mind Against is a Berlin-based electronic music duo consisting of Italian brothers Alessandro and Federico Fognini. They debuted this year with a standout EP for cultured label Life & Death and make just as lasting an impact with their fantastic and standout '909 Remix', which Art Department themselves have been dropping themselves for a while, to amazing reactions. Here, Glasgow's vocals are cased in slithering synth lines, curious melodic xylophone blobs and plenty of raw 909 trickery. It's a wholly different beast than the original, suited for much more energetic moments on the 'floor, but finishes off this small yet perfectly formed package in true style.

A Snow Plow - New York City Style
Often I'm asked how does a big city keep the roads clear during snowstorms. Well, many large cities don't, even in the wintry northeast, but New York City rarely has vacations known as 'snowdays' because it uses the heavy city sanitation trucks to plow the mess aside; take a look.
