Keys to Starting a Coffee Shop Business in 2018: Today we talk about small business ideas and a coffee shop owners love for coffee. I call it coffee shop love. Ever thought to yourself, "It sure would be nice to open up a coffee shop?" We know a guy who did that very thing! Lance Battenfield operates one of the best kept coffee secrets in the country. Now, I'm sure that many people are proud of their local coffee house, but Lance's patrons are beyond a mere sense of pride. Everyone that I have spoken with is utterly shocked about the quality of coffee coming out of Lingleville, Texas. This place has it all. If you are looking for something specific, Lance and his team at the Lingleville Country Store have it! This week we sat down with the owner of the Lingleville Country Store to pick his brain about how to start a coffee shop, how to start a coffee shop, and how to build a small business. Lance is born and raised in the small town culture. However, his love for coffee and quirky personality has him transcending the local norms. It is necessary to state that Lance is part of the experience. It's not simply the best coffee these parts have ever seen. It is more a finely tuned balance of delicious high quality coffee and customer service that exceeds the industry standard. Lance is the champion of this cause. He believes in his product and is in a frenzy to make sure that everyone else experiences the joys of drinking his coffee. To drink the coffee @ Lingleville Country Store, in the environment in which Lance has created, is to taste a portion of Lance's heart. You will find yourself warm, grateful, and filled with a childlike excitement. Lance's Keys to Success: Passion A Good Initial Deal A Great Product A special thanks to Lance for allowing us to sit down and pick his brain on the area of Micro/Small businesses. A short conversation with him, hints at the well rounded personality he possesses. However, coffee and business is certainly his wheelhouse. There is so much more to share from this short encounter, but that is a conversation for a different time. Suffice it to say that if Lance ever were to start a podcast and pontificate on life, business and coffee... I would be a faithful subscriber. If you are looking for encouragement or practical advice concerning starting a Micro/Small Business, check out this video as well as others we are producing on this subject. If you are looking for the best coffee this world has to offer or even a sit down with Lance, you can find it/him @ Lingleville Country Store 254-968-7632 18999 W FM 8 Lingleville, TX 76461 (Don't blink, you might pass it) Website: www.linglevillecountrystore.com FB: www.facebook.com/OfficialLinglevilleCountryStore/

It seems that almost everyone wants to open a Coffee Shop. And why not? Imagine walking into your store daily to pick up your bag of money - the barista smiling as he brews while the smell of fresh roast and sounds of happy customers delight your senses. Coffee must be a great way to fill your pockets with money - right? Today we're going to take a critical look at opening a coffee shop on Franchise City. Coffee is another business that carries a lot of emotional momentum. It's kind of the go-to retirement dream or, a business that is the exact opposite of the rat race. No board meetings, no fighting traffic, no stress and no pressure. Or so they think. So let's get that misconception out of the way first. Owning a coffee shop is operationally no different from most service based food businesses. You'll be dealing with employee theft, spoilage, sourcing issues, high attrition levels and ongoing difficulty in finding quality employees at reasonable hourly rates. It is not rare to see new owners putting in 80 hour workweeks to try and make things happen. if you think there is no pressure running a coffee shop try a vision of payroll coming up tomorrow as well as your rent and you are once again $2800 in the red with no way of paying. Your best selling coffee roast is on back order, your manager just quit, the washroom is plugged again and you just got 4 bad reviews because your washroom is plugged again. In the coffee business you'll also be at the mercy of very "passionate" customer sentiment. This industry has a fickle and demanding customer base who expect you to be better than their last shop. You will be very hard hit if any of your employees give bad service, or if your coffee is not up to these very high standards of local coffee drinkers. If you receive enough bad online reviews when you first open it can literally turn your coffee shop into a ghost town. Social media has a massive impact on buyer decisions these days and you have to ask yourself are you, as a new entrepreneur savvy enough to understand how to train your staff in great customer service? Because it doesnt just happen. Are you able to source coffee and to have it prepared in such a fashion it blows customers away? Can you source it at rates low enough to make money? And here is the problem with most prospective coffee shop investors. They have no idea about coffee, no idea about customer service. They just noticed a local coffee shop is often busy and see this as a quick way to make money. If money is your primary focus, and you have no previous skills in food service or customer service this can actually be a very difficult business to operate despite the glorious visions you have in your mind. Now even if you do happen to have a handle on good coffee, a good handle on running a business and hiring and managing employees the industry itself right now is still tough. In fact Starbucks, arguably the most successful coffee brand in the world, will be closing 150 stores this year. That's three times as many as it usually closes. Do you hear that? 3 times more than it usually closes. Closing stores is an ongoing, regular event with Starbucks. Closing stores - not opening stores. A quick search for "coffee shop closed" reveals hundreds of these results, local shops all over the country closing their doors for various reasons, mostly monetary. This owner was quoted as saying "The business hasn't made itself sustainable yet and it's been almost 3 years. Can you imagine struggling for 3 years only to have to close the doors? Prospective investors should take time to click through some of these stories, most of these independent shops were trendy, cool, had pretty solid reviews. Everything was in place and yet they had to close down. Some had been open for up to 30 years. If we do a search at BizBuySell -which is a listing website for selling businesses we see there are almost 1200 coffee shops and cafes for sale. Are they selling because they are making too much money? Let's take a look. We see locations for sale at $15,000, $19,000, $20,000 with seller financing. Tim Hortons, arguably the most successful Canadian coffee shop, had owners recently hit with a $250,000 reduction in annual earnings just due to minimum wage increases. Tim Horton's is also seemingly struggling with their rollout and expansion into the US market and even they are closing stores. There are many businesses and franchise options out there - not just coffee, don't let your emotions guide you as always do your research in a critical fashion. If you are considering the franchise route and need help finding a franchise give the experts a call at franchise city. Our services are free to qualified buyers you can learn more about us here. Dont forget to like and subscribe and hit the bell for updates. http://www.Franchise.city

So, you’re thinking about opening a retail store in 2018? In today’s digital age with same day e-commerce deliveries, your friends and family may think you’re crazy; but I see many possiblities. However, that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy. Opening a retail shop and being in business for yourself can be very rewarding, but if you’re not careful it can quickly go downhill. Like all other successful milestones in life, like owning your first home, it takes time, dedication, and hard work to find the perfect house and turn into a home, your home. The same applies to starting a business. You need to take the time to plan, go through the proper channels and steps, and dedicate yourself to making it successful. So, before you jump into the retail waters head first, sit down, pour a cup of coffee (or whiskey), and watch my video to understand my process and 10 steps it takes to make your dream of starting a retail store a successful reality.

Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva heads to Chicago to transform a garage into a woodworking shop. Watch the full episode: https://www.thisoldhouse.com/watch/ask-toh-workshop-light-switch Cost: $2,000-3,000 Skill Level: Moderate Tools: Miter saw Table saw Drill/Driver Sander Planer Jig saw Pocket hole jig Shopping List: 2x4 lumber Sheet of ¾” Birch plywood Window Fan J Hooks Table Saw stand Steps: 1. For the folding workbench, build a frame out of 2x4 lumber approximately 4 feet long by 3 feet wide. Include two additional 2x4s for center supports. 2. Attach a 2x4 leger to the long side of the workbench using hinges. This leger will screw into the wall. 3. If you’re also using the workbench as an outfeed table, it should be slightly lower than the top of your table saw. Once you know that height, cut two 2x4s to serve as legs and attach them to the inside of the front of the frame using hinges. 4. Use a masonry drill bit and concrete screws to fasten the leger of the folding workbench to the wall. Cut ¾” plywood for the bench top, and allow 1 1/2-2” around three sides for an overhang for clamping. Attach the workbench top to the frame by countersinking screws.

http://CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/ Here’s yet another screen printing educational video about how you can set up a small business in your home or garage. Many people ask me how much space you need to fit floor presses and conveyor dryers in and the truth it you can actually do a lot with a smaller shop. As you will see in this video the room with the press and belt dryer is about 200 square feet maybe less. The darkroom and washout booth are in completely different rooms that are smaller but everything works out great in this small shop built in a house. Although the space is zones for commercial use, the building is an old summer home. There id a decent amount of space but it’s broken up into different rooms with doors and walls as well as windows. So if you’re thinking of starting a business at home and you’re worried about the space you have to work in, then you’ll want to watch this video for sure. Please make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel and activate the bell notifications so you’ll get an email or notification when I upload new screen printing videos. Thanks for watching and enjoy! For more information about how to open a flower shop check out https://openaflowershop.com. Have more questions? Ask in the comments! Here are six things you need to do before starting a flower shop. Number 1 - Volunteer to work in a flower shop. Even if you have arranged flowers in the past, it’s still a good idea to see how different shops operate and look over the owner’s shoulder to see what goes on behind the scenes. Look for a shop far enough away from where you plan to open so that you aren’t a threat to their business. There have been too many people who had this dream of quitting their job to start a flower shop and then spend their life savings to find out it wasn’t as fun as they thought it would be. Number 2 - Go to an industry related conference to learn more about what’s happening in the industry and network with people who are doing what you want to do. This is a great opportunity to learn from their successes and failures and get advice for what you should be focusing on. These conferences are also great because you get to see many of the vendors and look at the products to sell in your shop. The Society of American Florists and International Floriculture Expo hold some of the largest events every year. The cost to attend isn’t cheap but the knowledge you can gain is more than worth it. Number 3 - Get your plan written down. Write a business plan, no matter how informal, to get the ideas out of your head and on to paper. Sometimes things make sense in your head but when you write them down, it’s easier to see flaws. Share the plan with friends and mentors to get different perspectives to be sure you haven’t missed anything. Also be sure to spend some time on the numbers to see if this shop is feasible. There are free and paid business plan templates online or you can get help from a Small Business Development Center or SCORE for free help with your business plan. Number 4 – Educate yourself on efficient production and inventory management. Flower shops are very fast paced during the big holidays like Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day and you need a plan to get good seasonal people who can help when things get too busy for you to handle. If you are betting on just having friends and family help, be careful as they may not be there when you need them. Also, what is your plan for managing inventory and how will you balance the need to order for big holidays but not have too much left over to spoil? Flowers are perishable and their lifespan isn’t very long. Once they start to go bad, they aren’t sellable and there is no getting that money back. Number 5 – Get your marketing plan in order. Why are people going to buy from you? What makes your shop better than the other options in your community? How are people going to find you? Many new store owners don’t want to budget much money to advertise and expect the sign on the front of the building along some social media will take care of their promotions. While there are some inexpensive options to market, those options take time and need to be consistent if they are going to be successful. Will you have the time for social media in addition to running the shop? Last, what is your plan to market online? Online only stores continue to take sales from retail stores and just creating a website for your store isn’t going to be enough. If people can’t find you online, you will be missing out on a considerable amount of online sales. Not sure how to do this? Start talking now with a digital marketing company to find the options and costs. Number 6 – Work your connections. Do you have connections with funeral homes and wedding related businesses that your competitors don’t? Funerals and weddings typically make up over 30% of income for most flower shops and the volume of sales from these sources is often an indicator of whether a flower shop will be profitable or not. If you are in an area that has a competitor who has these locked up, you will be starting at a huge disadvantage. Well, there you have it, six things you need to do before starting a flower shop. Running a flower shop is so much more than making nice flower arrangements and many people are not fully prepared for that reality. The good news is that anyone can learn, but be sure to take your time and get educated before investing your time and money to get started. For more information about opening your flower shop, head over to Openaflowershop.com to get more tips and advice.
