This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. Let’s start by looking at the difference between “market” requirements and “product” requirements. Then, we’ll see why writing QUALITY requirements with the CUSTOMER IN MIND is critical to the success of our products. In the first phase of the Optimal Product Process, which is the Conceive phase, we come up with ideas for new products We refer to this as starting in the “problem space” and moving to the “solution space.” Developing requirements is a similar proposition. We start by understanding the market need. This often takes the form of a Market Requirements Document or MRD. From there we can define a solution or product, which includes product features that solve the need. This is traditionally in the form of a Product Requirements document or PRD. For Agile development teams, these requirements may appear as features in the product backlog used by developers describing what they need to build. So if we’re talking about a MARKET requirement, we’re in the “problem space.” And if we are talking about product FEATURES, then we’re in the “solution space.” Now, this doesn’t mean we need to get bogged down in documentation for documentation’s sake. But there IS a lot of evidence that poorly defined requirements propagate more errors in the final product. If you expect the final solution to actually address the problem you’ve identified, then you MUST invest in creating clear and quality market requirements. You then work with engineering to translate this into an agreed upon set of product requirements. The most fundamental ingredient in a good requirement is the customer. Who are they? What’s their story? What problems are they facing? What outcome are they hoping to achieve? When it comes to defining products, Product Managers often skip right over the back story and true needs and start talking about features. Before writing a requirement it is more effective to give engineers the full customer context – the back story helping to frame the problem. When engineers have a deep understanding of the customer need and the problem they are solving they will often come up with a solution that is much better than if a Product Manager hands them a feature list.

We’ll give you three examples to best build a go-to-market strategy that will help you make money and drive long-term growth. Let's take a look at the companies, their buyers, and their strategy. At the end I'll give you a model for working this out for yourself. Desktop Computers For my first example, let's take a company that wants to own the desktop computing market. Firstly, come up with something that's truly amazing and different, clever, unique. Take that to as broad a market as you possibly can, and this is what the company I'm about to talk about did. Take it to as broad a market as you possibly can. Find out from that early market experience what group of buyers are likely to be a good market for you to focus on in the future. Start very broadly, selling very widely. Find the pattern and then find a niche that you think might be worth dominating, and then completely change the strategy and focus just on that. Leader in an enterprise software category For my second go to market strategy example, I'm going to pick an established player in an established market. Very different story. This established player in an established market had done such a good job of riding the enterprise applications market, that they were near dominant in that space. That's good news, but it's also bad news. The bad news is that pretty much all of the market, the enterprise market, had already bought either from this company, or from one of their competitors. Whilst they enjoyed the lion's share of the market, the market was pretty much drying up. Everybody had bought a product like this from either them or from their competitor. Challenger in enterprise software For my third go to market strategy example, again I'll stick to a mature market, but this time the company's not the gorilla. In fact, they're probably fourth on a good day. Maybe less, maybe fifth or sixth in the market. It's a big market, and they've done well, they've profited, and they've used those profits to continue to invest in sales and marketing as well as R&D. The problem is that as the market started to decline, their fortunes declined. They'll continue to invest, but they're investing in order to grow their share in a market that was pretty much consolidating. Now we're losing money hand over fist. What's the right strategy then? It says, hey Neil, thanks for making this awesome video. Would you like to make one video about product launches? Like pros and cons during the launch process? The first thing you need to know when you're doing a product launch is that you need to have a platform that allows you not only to sell the product but to deliver the product. A simple way to sell the product is using click funnels. A simple way to deliver the product is using Kajabi. Kajabi allows you to deliver a course to people once they buy. Click Funnels allows you to optimize the funnels so you can get more purchases and sales. Technically, Kajabi can do all of that. But I prefer Click Funnels on the front end, and I love using Kajabi on the back end to deliver the course, drip people the content over time. Now that you got the software solutions, what you want to do is create a web page with the offering for your product launch. Use Click Funnels to create a video talking about your product, the price points, what they're going to get for it, and you can just create a script. Create a little quick intro video on Click Funnels. You can do this on your iPhone. You say in this intro video, hey everyone, wanna learn how to grow your YouTube channel? Register for this webinar. I'm going to show you 11 secrets on how to grow your YouTube channel. Once they register, you have a PowerPoint presentation. The PowerPoint presentation is going to be around 45 minutes to an hour. The first 30 minutes you're going to educate them on all these cool crazy YouTube tactics. Don't charge for it. Just give away all the information for free. After you do that, you said, hey, now that you've learned everything, do you want to hear a simpler way to grow your YouTube channel? I showed you all the ways that you can do it on your own, but would you like to learn some of the hacks that I use that speed up the process so that way you don't have to take seven, eight months to get results and you could get results in three months? Usually, people say yes. Then you hook them with a special offer. Normally, if I did one on one YouTube consulting and you went to people in person, you're going to charge five figures. Then what you want to do is send them to a page where they can check out. You can do this all on Click Funnels. You can also do this live. You host a live webinar once a month, or you can make an evergreen webinar. If you want to make an evergreen webinar, webinar jam has software called everwebinar. Once you've completed those steps, you can drive traffic to your product launch using YouTube ads or Facebook ads. Facebook ads tend to convert better than YouTube ads. The other strategy for a product launch is to go to all the popular bloggers in your space, contact them and offer to give them 30, 40, 50% of every single sale you drive. Do a joint webinar with them. They'll push your product, and you can generate sales. ConvertKit does a wonderful job of this. Their revenue figures are public. They're doing over ten million a year in revenue. Most of their revenue is driven by affiliates and launches. Another product launch tip is to contact all of the people who clicked on your check out page but didn't buy. You re-market to them with the YouTube and Facebook video that breaks in with what they would get if they purchase. Send them back to the check out page. You'll notice it will be your highest converting ad campaign. That's what we did. It has worked amazingly well. It still works.
