Build a new team if possible (so you’re not pulling that team back in to other client work) and really allow it to thrive and grow. By all means, if there are opportunities to refer customers to the product, help them out, or give any other resources, etc. You want to do that because you have a vested interested in seeing it be successful. In this video you will learn the main differences between Product based companies and service based companies. They are Product based companies are those that creates some products like Oracle,Adobe are product based companies. Service based companies are those that works on these products to provide service to the client. For Example: TCS, Wipro etc are service based companies usually use products (Oracle, Photoshop, Premier Pro) made by product based companies for various purposes. In a service based company, the client is King. They want the customer to be happy and satisfied with the product or service offered while in a product based company, quality is king. They want the product to be top-notch so that more people will start consuming it. Whether you should go for product based or service based, is completely on your interest.If you are exceptionally good at coding and have a zeal to create something then go for the product based companies, otherwise service based companies are fine. But keep one thing in mind that as a fresher if you don’t get the chance to work at product company then go for a service based startup or a small company and not for MNC because in small company, you can actually learn and go for your dreams after 2–3 years. Product based companies usually hire candidates who have very good domain knowledge and who are familiar with the latest tools and technology. Communication skills may not really matter when it comes to the recruitment process. If you are aspiring to get into a service based company then your communication skills will be as important as your technical knowledge. In product based companies job security is higher than service based companies. Employees feels very pressure due to deadlines and targets under service based companies whereas employees in product based companies feel less pressured as compared to service based companies. Service based companies work only when the client approach them with specific requirements.whereas product based companies create their products in advance before approach them. Now what you have to remember is that the people who are on the panel are successful business owners and entrepreneurs in their own right so have seen it, done it, and have a good idea what makes a good product or service. That is why they are often amazed by some of the people who pitch on the show. How often do we see a pitch about a product or service for which there will never be a demand! And sadly, more often than not, these same people have invested everything they own to 'create' this product that will never find a buyer. It's as simple as this ... if you want to make money to have to sell your goods or services to other people, your target audience. But they can only be your target audience if your goods or services match their needs or wants. Every selling proposition moves a potential customer either closer to desire or further away from pain so your products or solutions have to be tailored to their needs or wants. You should be looking at your products or services and seeing have they fit in with what your clients want and not with what you want, or your family wants, or even what your employees want. Let's have a look at some examples to illustrate the point I'm trying to make .... 1. You're a self-employed plumber who insists that your customers pay cash and there's no paper work ... your customers actually want a receipt and written guarantee with the option to pay with a debit card 2. You're a self-employed plumber who doesn't take cash, provides a receipt for all of your work, and gives a guarantee ... your customers want the cheapest possible price and want to pay cash 3. You design a rain proof coat from a special material meaning that it is dry again within minutes no matter how wet it is. Comes with a hefty price tag ... your customers are happy with an inexpensive fold away coat These aren't particularly great examples but what I'm trying to do is illustrate the fact that you can't sell what your audience doesn't want or need. So in practical terms what do your products or services do to meet the needs or wants of your target market? Are there things you could add to your service that would increase the positive experience of your customer? Actions Take a look at the products or services you offer to your customers and check ... Are you providing the ideal service or product for your customers ... for example, if you sold wood flooring do you provide a delivery service? 1. Could you improve your customers experience ... for example if you sold wood flooring could you provide videos on your website or from the manufacturer on how to fit it correctly? Could you happily recommend tradesmen who would enhance or compliment your local brand to ensure it is fitted properly thereby giving them the floor they dreamed about? 2. If you do provide 'free' delivery do you offer a discount if they take it away themselves for customers who want the keenest prices? 3. Could you create sample packs of your flooring with a deposit (to encourage them to return to your business) so that they can go home with the samples and choose the exact colour or finish they wanted? 4. Take that one step further ... could you send someone to their house (by appointment) to show them a selected range and receive advice on which way the floor could be laid to reduce costs or achieve a better finish? Final Note Don't forget, as a local business owner, the greatest source of information for all of these types of questions are your current customers. As them what they thought of your service, your products etc. What would they have been willing t pay more for and what would did they not like paying for? Answering these questions will enable you to provide a range of products or services. Again, as an example using the flooring we were discussing earlier ... Product A - discounted price on your flooring, take it away today Product A - regular price with free delivery Product A - premium price with free delivery and free fitting by guaranteed tradesman It doesn't matter what you sell or do, every product or service can have various price points and packages. Take the time to look at your business if you are providing the goods or services your customers are looking for or are they going elsewhere, to your competitors because you don't meet their needs? We will look into the relationship and difference between product life cycle management, project life cycle management and SDLC (Software Development Life cycle management) with a simple example in this video. First we will try to define, life cycle phases and major focus of each of these. Product management: Product life cycle management is the process of managing the entire life cycle of a product from inception, through engineering design, and manufacture, to service and disposal of manufactured products. Generally Product life cycle management has the following phases. Idea generation Idea Screening Business Analysis Product Development Test Marketing Commercialization Evaluate and refine Major focus of product life cycle management is, the features and functionalities of the product that it offers to the customers. Now we will look into Project management. As per Project management institute (PMI), Project can be defined as a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. the temporary indicates the project has a define start and end time. Project management can be defined as the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. As per PMI, project management has five process group or phases as follows. Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling Closing. The main focus of project management is, to ensure the deliverable are meeting the requirements. Let's move on to SDLC life cycle management. SDLC can be defined as a process for planning, developing, testing, and deploying an information system. SDLC management deals with this managing the process associated with SDLC to build the IT system. Generally it has following 5 phases and according to the selected methodology these phases may or may not overlap. Requirements gathering Design Development Testing, and Implementation Major focus of SDLC management is, to build the system according to the specifications. Let me connect the product, project, and SDLC life cycle with a simple example. Lets imagine a scenario where company XYZ wants to launch a new online web store that helps the merchants to sell their products online. As a first step The XYZ company will start with the initial process of product life cycle management, idea generation, idea screening and business analysis are been performed and business cases are produced to support the launch of the online store. Now the company will start a new project for developing and launching the site. At this stage, the first phase of the project Initiation will be kicked off and project charter, stake holder register will be created. At the time project planning phase, SDLC life cycle starts. Also during the project planning phase, Software Development Methodology (SDM) will be chosen to implement the SDLC process and the software development starts. Normally entire SDLC will be contained in planning, execution, monitor & control phases of project life cycle. I would like to mention one point here. we can't exactly define at what phases of project management life cycle, the SDLC process will fit in, as the SDLC process might or might not overlap based on the selected software development methodology. So here I made an assumption of water fall SDLC methodology is followed. System development and launching process will start either at the planning, or slightly before that, and go through the execution and finishes at the monitoring and control phase. At this stage, SDLC life cycle ends. Next phase of the project is the project closing phase where the required documents will be submitted and the project will get closed formally. Though the project is closed here, still the product life cycle continues here. Product evaluation and refining is a continuous process and the product will be evolved further based on the customers feed back or through some analysis. Lets say, the company wants to roll out a mobile version of the application to the market. At this point of time one more project will be started and will continue the same cycle as mentioned above. So in a nut shell, a product life cycle will have many project life cycles and SDLC will be a part of the project management life cycle.

Lorna: Well, I would love to hear your perspective on the difference between marketing a service and a product. Because you can return a product you can't return a service. Les: There's a thing that they both have in common, that most people forget. It's called the WIIFM factor. When you go out and buy something, why do you buy it? Lorna: I buy for several reasons, sometimes i Need the item, sometimes I have extra money, or something that I would love to have. Les: The reason I ask that question, is because most people's communications are selling features, not benefits. What WIIFM stands for is "What's in it for me?" And that is what most communicators fail at. Consumers are not interested in WHAT you're selling, but how are yuo going to make them more successful, richer, better looking etc. But if it is not focused on the benefits, it falls on deaf ears more often than not. And this goes the same with service, if I'm going to spend money on a service I want to know how is it going to make my job easier. When you talk about training, it is not something you can put your hands on physically, but it will enhance the value in life. Where ever there is a problem, there is an opportunity. Talk from the perspective of the audience you're trying to influence and that comes from training. You're in a business to teach them to be proactive, instead of reactive. There's a thing called the 4 rules of Smart Marketing and you're dealing mainly with the first rule. People are afraid of change, but change is constant. And if you don't change, you short change your life. You need to explain to people that "I'm going to teach you how to be open minded, I'm going to teach you have to be more acceptable of change. It's not so much product verses service, it's presentation. And the presentation isn't in a powerpoint, it is "Am I talking from the perspective of the audience?" And that is one of the biggest mistakes that I've seen over the last 5 decades. And you can ask your clients to list the benefits of why people will buy from you. Lorna: Well, I have done that and I've discovered that that is where they really do have a problem identifying the benefits. Then they all clam up and they believe that you if you speak of the features of this thing, they think you must be stupid if you can't see the benefits. Why are you asking me? You have the work in front of you to see the benefits. Les: Well there's an answer to that. In order for someone to grasp the message, you have to be redundant. Studies have shown that consumers have to see your message 17 times before it registers. Lorna: That many? Les: Yeah Lorna: Wow Les: Maybe even worse today with all the clutter that's out there. And that's the way I would come back to people. Hey, there are a lot of people out there that won't grasp the benefits as quickly as you "mr. genius" does. You have to make sure that is it your goal to show how smart you are, or is it to sell your product or service? One of the things I've learned over the years, if people are objecting you, ask them questions that you already know the questions to. It will make them think.
