Growing Crops in the Desert with Seawater | Freethink
Water is in short supply in much of the world - but what if we use seawater? It's been a dream for many years, but now technology is making it possible. This new seawater greenhouse uses a clever cardboard design to distill fresh water from salt water cheaply and efficiently. It's helping grow crops in Somaliland, and could help stop the water crisis in Africa and other parts of the world that are susceptible to drought. The founder of Seawater Greenhouse, Charlie Paton, explains how unlike traditional greenhouses - which are hothouses - this one is a "cool house" that is ideal for growing temperate crops in deserts or other hot, arid regions. What do you think? Will this succeed at turning desert into farmland? What other projects have caught your eye? Let us know in the comments and subscribe for new videos every week. Dutch scientists close to 'breakthrough' method of growing crops in deserts
Scientists in the Netherlands say they are close to a breakthrough which will allow crops to be grown in deserts. Many say this could completely alter life on the African continent and even end hunger. World leaders meeting at the climate talks in Germany are being urged to commit to more funding for new agricultural projects in drought-stricken parts of the world. Seawater Greenhouse Pilot Project - Canary Islands (1994)
The first pilot project commenced in 1992 with the search for a test site which was eventually found on the Canary Island of Tenerife, once known as the 'Garden of the Gods', but now arid and seriously damaged by excessive abstraction of ground water. A prototype Seawater Greenhouse was assembled in the UK and constructed on the site in Tenerife. The results from this pilot project validated the concept and demonstrated the potential for other arid regions. The Seawater Greenhouse for Arid Lands project in Tenerife had scientific objectives to design, develop and demonstrate a cost effective means of producing both crops and pure water in hot, arid coastal regions. The project exploits both the high solar radiation and prevailing wind to drive the most of the processes. In addition to a crop grown inside the greenhouse, a shade tent provided shelter for nursery plants and an outdoor planting scheme was maintained, with the supply of fresh water as well as having protection from the structure of the greenhouse itself.

Awesome Greenhouse Bell Pepper Farming - Modern Agriculture Technology
Greenhouse pepper production is based on a year long production cycle. Typically, seeding occurs in early to mid October, plants are moved from the nursery into the production greenhouses six weeks later, just before Christmas. Harvest begins in late March and continues through to the following November. It takes roughly four months from seeding to first pick. This Farm of the Future Uses No Soil and 95% Less Water
Watch the next episode about San Francisco becoming a zero waste city: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg3OA1s8-SI&list=UUJsSEDFFnMFvW9JWU6XUn0Q As urban populations continue to rise, innovators are looking beyond traditional farming as a way to feed everyone while having less impact on our land and water resources. Vertical farming is one solution that's been implemented around the world. Vertical farms produce crops in stacked layers, often in controlled environments such as those built by AeroFarms in Newark, New Jersey. AeroFarms grows a variety of leafy salad greens using a process called "aeroponics," which relies on air and mist. AeroFarms' crops are grown entirely indoors using a reusable cloth medium made from recycled plastics. In the absence of sun exposure, the company uses LED lights that expose plants to only certain types of spectrum. AeroFarms claims it uses 95% less water than a traditional farm thanks to its specially designed root misting system. And it is now building out a new 70,000 square foot facility in a former steel mill. Once completed, it's expected to grow 2 million pounds of greens per year, making it the largest indoor vertical farm in the world. Smart Floating Farm: Forward Thinking Architecture’s invention could help feed the world - TomoNews
BARCELONA, SPAIN — A Barcelona-based company has developed a solar powered floating farm system that could ease growing food demand around the world. Smart Floating Farms, otherwise known as SFF, was developed by Forward Thinking Architecture. The idea was inspired by traditional grid-shape fish farms in Asia. The structure is 200 meters wide and 350 meters long, which is roughly the size of 6 football fields. They can be connected to form a cluster of modules. The floating farm has three levels: the top level is installed with photovoltaic panels to harvest sunlight for electricity and it has rainwater collectors for irrigation purposes; second level serves as a greenhouse for the vegetables, which are grown without soil under the hydroponic system; and the ground level is used as a fish farm on the open sea, as well as a fish egg hatchery, a slaughterhouse and a storage room for the fish. All the modules are centrally controlled by software via Cloud technology. The production data will be analysed and can be used to make comparisons on food needs for specific cities. Each SFF is estimated to have a maximum production of 8.152 tons of vegetables and 1.703 tons of fish per year. The floating farms are ideal for densely populated cities near coastal areas such as Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. New project uses saltwater to grow crops
(7 Sep 2017) LEADIN: Water-poor Jordan has launched a project utilising seawater to produce crops and fresh water with clean energy. Jordan's King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, which paid most of the 3.7 million US dollars for the project, inaugurated the facility in the kingdom's port city of Aqaba. STORYLINE: Lush green plants flourish in this greenhouse. And what's remarkable is they are growing with the help of seawater. This greenhouse is part of the 'Sahara Forest Project', a new scheme that produces crops with clean energy. Jordan's King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Haakon of Norway have come to the Red Sea port city of Aqaba for the project's inauguration and to take a tour of the facilities. The Norwegian royal is here to represent his country which contributed most of the 3.7 million US dollar costs. He even gets to sample the vegetables. Joakim Hauge, CEO of the Sahara Forest Project, explains the technology behind the greenhouse. "It is saltwater-cooled greenhouses, where we utilise saltwater to produce freshwater and to cool and humidify the air inside the greenhouses. That means we can utilise all the good sun here in Jordan without all the heat," he says. He adds that they are also planting native species outdoors to introduce vegetation to previously barren land. Crown Prince Haakon says the project has "great promise" for the future. "It's impressive to see how technology can be used in such a sustainable way and to produce agriculture goods in a quite tough climate," he says. Last month, a report by Stanford University suggested that Jordan, one of the world's driest countries, could face more severe droughts unless new technologies are applied in farming and other sectors. "This project is very important in Jordan to develop the area of Wadi Araba, and also to develop abandoned areas because of the lack of water and high temperatures," says Imad Fakhouri, Jordan's Planning Minister. The facility, surrounded by rocky desert, uses seawater to cool greenhouses. Desalinated seawater irrigates crops, such as pesticide-free cucumbers. A small desalination station uses solar energy. Putting bubble plastic on greenhouse to grow chillies
Every year we put bubble plastic on the walls and roof of a couple of our greenhouses, the ones we use for propagation. The bubble plastic insulates the greenhouses, keeping them warmer at night. We then put a little heater in each greenhouse and fill them with electrically-heated propagators. Seems a lot, but we are raising chilli peppers, which need a tropical environment to germinate, in the middle of the winter!

Inside a Shipping Container Vertical Hydroponic Farm
From http://bcfarmsandfood.com/ - Urban farmer, Tamara Knott, talks about container farming. Using vertical hydroponic farming, she grows 1.5 acres of fresh vegetables inside her insulated shipping container farm, Bright Greens Canada. High-tech freight container farms like Bright Greens, near the city of Victoria, BC, can produce fresh fruit, vegetables, and herbs year-round, using hydroponics and high-efficiency LED grow lights. Plants inside the large metal shipping container grow in a series of vertical towers. During the growing cycle, environmental sensors inside the farm measure the nutrient levels, temperature, humidity, air flow, and carbon dioxide levels, and send information to a controller to automatically maintain optimum growing conditions. Shipping container farms are compact, easily transported by truck or rail, and have a small footprint. This means they can fit into rural or urban settings (provided zoning laws allow). This kind of indoor container farming has wide possible uses for cold, northern areas or hot, dry desert areas, where the costs of transport for food outweigh the minimal expense of electrical energy needed to power an enclosed operation. Urban farming in containers such as these can also offer year-round access to fresh produce to restaurants and other urban food businesses. _________________________________ More about Tamara Knott and Bright Greens shipping container farm: Inside a Shipping Container Farm: Year-Round Indoor Farming at Bright Greens Canada - https://bcfarmsandfood.com/inside-a-shipping-container-farm/ Subscribe to our YouTube Channel and receive our latest videos - https://www.youtube.com/c/BcfarmsandfoodCanada?sub_confirmation=1 See more videos, articles, slideshows and recipes at BC Farms & Food website - http://bcfarmsandfood.com/ Like us on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/pages/BC-Farms-Food/1399920796888415 Explore the Vancouver Island Farms & Food Map - http://bcfarmsandfood.com/farm-map/

In it, Steve talks about the life and philosophy of being a simple organic salt harvester. Steve's hard work and love goes into every jar of S.W. Basics Exfoliant. Here are excerpts from that video: Steve: "I love the sea, I love looking out over the ocean. I love seeing the horizon. I just have it in my blood. I could never go anywhere where there wasn't an ocean nearby. It's all interaction with the rest of the world and this community and the whole community in this country. There is very little in this world that is new, brand new. It all comes from something that learned in the past. I make it because it's a natural extension of myself. The way we make our sea salt has got to be part of nature, part of our own body and soul. Maine sea salt is all natural, just the wind blowing through the greenhouses next to the ocean. And to have it locally produced by your own hands, you just have a natural appreciation for something that is really close to home and in your heart. We've become a mechanized, industrial people. We kind of remind people that it's the beginning, the way things used to be; simple. And that's what people are looking for and seeking out, their roots. The ocean contains sea salt, and the minerals are the same in percentage that you'll find in your own human body. It's an extension of ourselves, we don't have any machines, we don't have any fossil fuels, we don't need fossil fuels. People who are working for a business are a part of that business. They are as much of an owner and contributor as the guy at the top taking the money to the bank. Success comes from inside, comes from who you are. That's what we have to seek out, we have to find it. No matter what anyone is doing, it has to come from inside. Sea salt is something that I do, have been doing it for a long time and I will do it for the rest of my life." Steve Cook, Maine Sea Salt. Shop S.W. Backyard aquaponics: DIY system to farm fish with vegetables
Rob Torcellini bought a $700 greenhouse kit to grow more vegetables in his backyard. Then he added fish to get rid of a mosquito problem and before long he was a committed aquaponic gardener. Now his 10 by 12 foot greenhouse is filled with not only vegetables, but fish. And the best part is: the poo from that fish is what fertilizes his garden. Aquaponics combines fish farming (aquaculture) with the practice of raising plants in water (hydroponics). It's organic by definition: instead of using chemical fertilizers, plants are fertilized by the fish poo (and pesticides/herbicides can't be introduced to kill pests because they could harm the fish). Since the plants don't need dirt, aquaponics allows gardeners to produce more food in less space. And in addition to the vegetables they can grow, most aquaponics gardeners cultivate edible fish as well. In this video, Rob shows us the aquaponics greenhouse in his Connecticut backyard, that he built mostly from scavenged parts, as well as his DIY indoor system where he's growing lettuce under a grow light. Greenhouse Effect for Kids | #aumsum
Greenhouse effect. In a greenhouse, the sun's heat can come in but cannot go out. The trapped heat warms the greenhouse. This trapped heat helps in controlled growth of plants. If there were no greenhouse gases to trap the sun's radiation the earth would be a very cold place where we would not survive. This trapping of heat to keep the earth warm is called greenhouse effect.
