Each stands 500 feet above the water, with another 250 feet below. It's an expensive project, made possible by the participation of Scotland's government as part of the U.K.'s renewable energy goals. But the payoff could be big, too. A floating wind farm can operate in much deeper water than traditional wind farms. Since a great deal of the Earth's available wind power is far out at sea, being able to locate far from shore opens up a valuable—and clean—energy source. Documentary on use of Avian Radar for Bird Mortality Risk Mitigation at Wind Farms

07:16
The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department in early 2010 released a documentary video on the use of DeTect's MERLIN SCADA Avian Radar System technology at coastal wind farms in Texas. The video also includes footage on the use of MERLIN systems by the Texas A&M Kingsville Cesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Center for a multi-year coastal migratory bird study. The MERLIN Avian Radar is an advanced bird radar system developed specifically for detection and tracking of birds and bats that uses state-of-the-art radar and computer techniques that were originally developed for the US Air Force and NASA for critical flight safety (aircraft-bird strike avoidance). With the MERLIN SCADA software, the MERLIN radar also can be integrated with most wind farm Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) control systems to provide real-time bird activity monitoring and risk mitigation that includes automatic detection of approaching birds or bats activating automated responses ranging from issuing remote risk alerts to operators to turbine idling (with the system restarting the turbines once mortality risk conditions pass) to activation of humane deterrent devices.
Wildlife and Wind Farms - Conflicts and Solutions Vols 1 & 2

00:41
Edited by Martin Perrow. Get yours here: http://bit.ly/wwfvol1 and here: http://bit.ly/wwfvol2 Wind farms are an essential component of global renewable energy policy and the action to limit the effects of climate change. There is, however, considerable concern over the impacts of wind farms on wildlife, leading to a wide range of research and monitoring studies, a growing body of literature and several international conferences on the topic. This unique multi-volume work provides a comprehensive overview of the interactions between wind farms and wildlife. Volume 1 documents the current knowledge of the potential impacts upon wildlife during both construction and operation. An introductory chapter on the nature of wind farms and the impact assessment process is followed by a series of in-depth chapters documenting effects on climatic conditions, vegetation, terrestrial invertebrates, aquatic invertebrates and fish, reptiles and amphibians, birds, bats and terrestrial mammals. A synopsis of the known and potential effects of wind farms upon wildlife in perspective concludes the volume. Volume 2 provides a state-of-the-science guide to monitoring and mitigation to minimise or even eliminate impacts on wildlife from wind farms. The survey and monitoring section includes detailed chapters on birds and bats followed by chapters on modelling of collision risk and populations and the statistical principles of fatality monitoring. The following mitigation section comprises chapters on spatial planning and effective mitigation strategies for bats, birds and raptors including through repowering. A synopsis of international best planning and practice concludes the volume. The authors have been carefully selected from across the globe from the large number of academics, consultants and practitioners now engaged in wind farm studies, for their influential contribution to the science. Edited by Martin Perrow and with contributions by 40 leading researchers including: Robert Barclay, Michael Dillon, Jan Olof Helldin, Hermann Hötker, Jeffrey Lovich, Manuela de Lucas and Eugene Takle. The authors represent a wide range of organisations and institutions including the Universities of Calgary, Iowa State, Lund & Wyoming, US Geological Survey, Michael-Otto-Institut im NABU, Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, Spanish Council for Scientific Research, Renewable Energy Systems and several leading consultancies. Each chapter includes informative figures, tables, colour photographs and detailed case studies. Many of the latter are produced stand-alone from invited additional authors to ensure geographic spread and to showcase exciting new, often previously unpublished research. This book is designed for practitioners, researchers, managers and for a range of students in higher education, particularly those involved with environmental, ecological, conservation, impact assessment and climate change studies. music © purple-planet.com

Watch These Trained Eagles Take Down Drones Flying in The Air

00:46
Dutch National Police are making what's old new again with a fleet of birds trained to take down drones. The Dutch have teamed up with a raptor training company to make the program a reality. A video demonstration of the sharp-eyed birds in action makes it clear they are up for the task, however it wasn't clear how dangerous it could be for the raptors to come into contact with the spinning propellers. Dutch police said in a few months they'll know when the program will begin.

II International Summit on Wind Farms Life Extension - Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE)

02:08
Spain is one of the first countries in the world to face the aging of its wind farms: by 2020, half of its wind turbines will be over fifteen years old. The interest in the matter was evident in the First Summit on Wind Farms Life Extension held in 2016 and organized by the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE). The goal of 2017 is to take a significant leap forward and turn this event into a reference worldwide. Iron Maiden - The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Full Length

13:42
The full version of this great maiden song finally on youtube! This is for entertainment purposes only, just sayin' though... Lyrics: Hear the rime of the ancient mariner See his eye as he stops one of three Mesmerises one of the wedding guests Stay here and listen to the nightmares of the sea. And the music plays on, as the bride passes by Caught by his spell and the mariner tells his tale. Driven south to the land of the snow and ice To a place where nobody's been Through the snow fog flies on the albatross Hailed in God's name, hoping good luck it brings. And the ship sails on, back to the North Through the fog and ice and the albatross follows on. The mariner kills the bird of good omen His shipmates cry against what he's done But when the fog clears, they justify him And make themselves a part of the crime. Sailing on and on and north across the sea Sailing on and on and north 'til all is calm. The albatross begins with its vengeance A terrible curse a thirst has begun His shipmates blame bad luck on the mariner About his neck, the dead bird is hung. And the curse goes on and on at sea And the thirst goes on and on for them and me. "Day after day, day after day, we stuck nor breath nor motion as idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean Water, water everywhere and all the boards did shrink Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink." There calls the mariner There comes a ship over the line But how can she sail with no wind in her sails and no tide. See...onward she comes Onward she nears out of the sun See, she has no crew She has no life, wait but there's two. Death and she Life in Death, They throw their dice for the crew She wins the mariner and he belongs to her now. Then...crew one by one they drop down dead, two hundred men She...she, Life in Death. She lets him live, her chosen one. "One after one by the star dogged moon, too quick for groan or sigh each turned his face with a ghastly pang and cursed me with his eye four times fifty living men (and I heard nor sigh nor groan) with heavy thump, a lifeless lump, they dropped down one by one." The curse it lives on in their eyes The mariner he wished he'd die Along with the sea creatures But they lived on, so did he. And by the light of the moon He prays for their beauty not doom With heart he blesses them God's creatures all of them too. Then the spell starts to break The albatross falls from his neck Sinks down like lead into the sea Then down in falls comes the rain. Hear the groans of the long dead seamen See them stir and they start to rise Bodies lifted by good spirits None of them speak and they're lifeless in their eyes And revenge is still sought, penance starts again Cast into a trance and the nightmare carries on. Now the curse is finally lifted And the mariner sights his home spirits go from the long dead bodies Form their own light and the mariner's left alone. And then a boat came sailing towards him It was a joy he could not believe The pilot's boat, his son and the hermit, Penance of life will fall onto him. And the ship it sinks like lead into the sea And the hermit shrieves the mariner of his sins. The mariner's bound to tell of his story To tell this tale wherever he goes To teach God's word by his own example That we must love all things that God made. And the wedding guest's a sad and wiser man And the tale goes on and on and on.

AI Talent Denmark: Wind Power LAB

04:01
As a part of our deep dive into Applied Artificial Intelligence Innovation Center Denmark Silicon Valley has been conducting interviews with experts from academia, the business world and start-ups that all are working on the cutting edge of applied AI. We had the pleasure of having Wind Power Lab visit us in November, where we had the chance to shoot a short video interview that gives the viewer an introduction to the company and what they do. Wind Power LAB is a newly founded Danish start-up that deliver automated products and services for the wind power industry with a focus on blade defect assessments and blade risk management. Their core service is based on AI and deep learning algorithms for automated defect detection and assessment of structural damage. The data from the analysis form the basis for the company's technical feedback to their customers.
Switzerland - An alpine country

51:25
Gentle, green meadows, rugged rock faces, mysterious lakes, dense forests, tall mountains, low-lying river deltas, quietly meandering mountain streams and smack dab in the middle, a unique fauna - THIS is Switzerland! We trace the elementary power of nature and present animals and plants in landscapes that have hardly ever been touched by mankind. Switzerland is an alpine country, but it is also Europe's surge tank. Rivers such as the Rhine and the Rhone have their sources here. Glaciers, crevasses, icy cold caves and the underwater dome of the Verzasca are the unusual settings we chose for this film. We meet with rare, selected animal species and present their behavioural patterns, such as the Swiss or Arven jay, the lynx and albino catfish. Cold, wind, snow and extreme locations demand adaptation that make us marvel.

WHY WIND FARMS? | Joel explains why

01:05
Thank you Joel for providing us with tons of feedback on your testimonial! We greatly appreciate it! Joel's testimonial was filled with great points! It's true, that wind turbines take up little room after construction! Plants will grow back, local animals won't have to relocate and landowners can still use their land whenever they'd like! WHY WIND FARMS? | Barry & Prasit explain why

00:58
Big thanks to our landowners Barry and Prasit for providing us with their feedback on our landowner testimonials! What comes to your mind when you hear the words, "renewable energy?" For Barry and Prasit, the fact that it's great for the planet makes renewable energy a plus! Since they're participating in our wind farm project, we can't help but mention some of the benefits that wind power has to offer. It doesn't pollute the air we breathe, it helps generate income for landowners, and it has the ability to lower energy prices! What more is there to ask for! The rapid Growth of Wind Turbines around N. Ireland

01:12
I'm up in the hills above Doagh to view the famous Holestone Standing stone. Right across the road, contrasting the very old with the very new, is the latest uncompleted addition to the landscape-a wind turbine. Here in Ulster wind turbines are proving a more and more popular way of generating electricity. Wind farms are now seen in various places right across the countryside. As a result of generation location grants individual turbines are again becoming very very common. There are a number of pluses and minuses about wind turbnes. Some folk would say that they are fast becoming a blot on our beautiful landscape. Bird lovers worry about their fast revolving blades killing endangered hawks and eagles. Other people would say that they provide safe clean and renewable energy. Hopefully as a long term result energy prices will tumble. Like them or loathe them it appears that the wind turbine is here to stay. What do you think about them? 'A Chinese energy company has bought seven wind farm projects in Northern Ireland and a further seven in the Republic of Ireland for a reported 350m euros (£300m). The China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) has taken control of the projects from Dublin-based Gaelectric. The deal consists of 10 operating wind farms. A further four will be operational by mid-2017. Dr Wei Lu, chief executive of CGN Europe Energy, said this was the group's first acquisition in the energy sector in Ireland. ' John Campbell BBC News
