Southern California's "Valley Girl" Speech Persists
Valley Girl speech persists in conversation -- as this clip shows - but is best not used in formal presentations, public speaking, or job interviews. The "valley" refers to the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County. From Wikipedia entry: Valspeak is a common name for a now partially universal American sociolect, originally of Southern Californian's, in particular valley girls. This stereotype originated in the 1970s, but was at its peak in the 1980s and lost popularity in the late 1990s and 2000s. Though for a brief period a national fad, many phrases and elements of Valspeak, along with surfer slang and skateboarding slang, are stable elements of the California English dialect lexicon, and in some cases wider American English (such as the widespread use of "like" as conversational filler). Elements of valspeak can now be found virtually everywhere English is spoken, particularly among young native English speakers. The term "Valley Girl" and the Valley manner of speech was given a wider circulation with the release of a hit single by Frank Zappa entitled "Valley Girl," on which Moon Zappa, Frank's fourteen-year-old daughter, delivered a monologue of meaningless phrases in "valspeak" behind the music. This song, Frank Zappa's only Top 40 hit in the United States, popularized phrases such as "grody to the max". Some of the terms used by Moon were not actually Valley phrases, but were surfer terms instead (such as "tubular" and "gnarly"). But due to the song's popularity, some of the surfer phrases actually entered the speech of real Valley teens after this point. The Los Angeles surfing subculture, on the other hand, did not generally begin using the Valley terms. Valspeak is used heavily in the 1995 film Clueless and quite a lot in Wayne's World. Intonation: Excessive use of high rising terminal. Statements have rising intonation, causing normal declarative language to appear to the listener as interrogative. Also known as "uptalking" or the "moronic interrogative." --------------------- See also Taylor Mali on uptalk, which -- as noted above - seems to have aspects of earlier Valley Girl speech: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qv0aDhqxiHg

Zappa - "Valley Girl" lyrics
Valley girl is a socio-economic stereotype depicting a class of women characterized by the colloquial California English dialect Valleyspeak and materialism. Originally referring to upper-middle class girls from the Los Angeles commuter towns of San Fernando Valley during the 1980s, the term in later years became more broadly applied to any English-speaking female—primarily in the United States and Canada—who engendered the associated affects of ditziness, airheadedness, and/or greater interest in conspicuous consumption than intellectual or personal accomplishment.

A Bit of 1980's 'Valley Girl' language
Every era has its lingo, its catch phrases. In the early 1980's, teenage girls from southern California's San Fernando Valley spawned a trend that inspired fashion, film and TV, and most noticeably... teenage girl vernacular.

Valley GIrls! by Amber DawnLee
Funny Video with the Real Valley GIrls! Parody of the movie but better! The real valley girls! 1) A girl that comes from the San Fernando Valley that can be very prepy, rich, and usually spolied. Says like, omg, jk or kk a lot in sentences, and loves shopping in the mall. 2) Wears clothes which are usually trendy and overpriced, including fluorescents 3) (the most irritating thing) It is in a group in 2 or more, they usualy stare at you for a while then whisper among themselves, they then leave the room or place, etc... 5-10 mins later they return and do the same process. No one but themselves know what they are talking about. 4) Hardcore Valley Girls don't admit that they are valley girls and get pissed off if you call them one. love love -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Taking a BATH WITH MY DOGS! | Amber Dawn Lee" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCHAB7PpPoY -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

The Boulevard begins near Calabasas in Woodland Hillsat an intersection with Valley Circle Boulevard, passes through Tarzana, Encino, Sherman Oaks, and finally in Studio City (where it intersects with Barham Boulevard) it becomes Cahuenga Boulevard, which then winds through Cahuenga Pass into Hollywood. It has always been the most concentrated location for mom and pop shops and small businesses in the Valley; nowadays it has pockets of housing, mini-malls, and shops, along with a wide assortment of businesses, schools, and other establishments. Homes south of Ventura are considered to be among the most expensive in Los Angeles County, ranging from $2 million to $50 million and home to numerous celebrities, executives, athletes, and entertainers alike. Ventura Boulevard is one of the primary east–west thoroughfares in the San Fernando Valley, California, United States. Ventura Boulevard is one of the oldest routes in the San Fernando Valley as it was originally a part of the El Camino Real (the trail between Spanish missions). It was also U.S. Route 101 before the freeway (which it is parallel to for much of Ventura Boulevard's length) Music The Everly Brothers recorded a song called "Ventura Boulevard" on their 1968 album Roots. Ventura Boulevard is mentioned in Tom Petty's song "Free Fallin'" ("All the vampires walkin' through the valley, Move west down Ventura Boulevard..."). The Boulevard is also mentioned in Frank Zappa's "Valley Girl" ("On Ventura, there she goes, she just bought some bitchin' clothes") a song about a valley girl(voiced by his daughter Moon Zappa) who lives in Encino and participates in typical Valley Girl activities such as shopping at The Galleria, not wanting to do the dishes, and getting her toenails professionally pedicured. Guitarist John 5 made a song entitled "18969 Ventura Blvd." Ventura Boulevard was also the name of a band from Delhi, India. In the documentary Living with Michael Jackson, it is revealed that Michael Jackson wrote the song Billie Jean while riding down Ventura Boulevard in his car. Haim's music video "Want You Back" is filmed on Ventura Boulevard. Film The boulevard is a prominent location in the movie The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Much of the films Crash and Transformers were filmed on the boulevard. Television In the Seinfeld episode "The Trip, Part 2", Jerry and George were said to be calling from a pay phone on Ventura Boulevard. In reality, the pay phone shown was on Ventura Place, about one block away. In the Treehouse of Horror VI episode of The Simpsons, Ventura Boulevard features as the location of the show's first ever live-action scene. Steve Allen, who lived in Encino, famously joked that "The Valley is the hippest part of town. They even named a boulevard after Charlie Ventura," referring to the renowned jazz saxophonist. Video games Video game developer Infinity Ward, which developed most of the games in the Call of Duty series, has its headquarters on Ventura Boulevard. The studios can be seen at 15821 Ventura Boulevard, Encino. Valley Girl Redefined
Curated by 11:11 A Creative Collective, in partnership with Brand Library & Art Center Valley Girl Redefined opened on January 26th and runs through Marc 22, 2019. The “valley girl”, like the Valley itself, cannot be contained in a stereotype. However, it can be argued that any Valley Girl’s sense of self has been informed by the cinematic ideal imposed on them. In fact, with little effort one can see that the “valley girl” has left an indelible mark on the global identity of womanhood while only representing a small minority. This exhibition endeavors to look past the myopic lens of popular culture that created the “valley girl” and delve into the true identities and diversity of Women in the Valley through the contemporary artwork they produce. Two drivers in custody after reckless pursuit across the San Fernando Valley, California.
A stolen vehicle pursuit ended with two drivers in custody after a civilian began chasing the suspect across the San Fernando Valley Monday night. The driver was maneuvering dangerously around other motorists as he attempted to escape authorities, driving on the wrong side of the road and at one point colliding with another vehicle. The stolen car sustained visible damage to its front right side but was able to continue on. Around 8:50 p.m., LAPD's ground units pulled off the chase, though authorities continued to monitor in aerial units. That move was intended to create safer road conditions, but the stolen car soon crashed into a minivan in an intersection in the North Hills area. The sedan sustained further front-end damage, yet still continued on. A spike strip was deployed around 9 p.m., but it did not appear to impede the suspect vehicle's progress. A short time later, it narrowly avoided a family in a crosswalk. About five minutes later, police made the decision to stop pursuing the suspect, both on ground and aerially. The driver was said to be communicating with authorities via cellphone to negotiate a surrender. After pausing to speak with several people along the side of the road, it appeared the driver got a pedestrian to give him a cigarette near the corner of Sepulveda and Roscoe boulevards. A short time later the stolen car cut off a pickup trying to get into a gas station. The truck then began closely following the suspect. Over concern for the pickup driver, police units resumed the pursuit. But after several patrol SUVs were behind the truck and sedan with their lights on, both drivers refused to pull over. Eventually, the pickup was able to block the stolen car in against several oncoming cars that had pulled over. Authorities pulled the Toyota driver from the car and handcuffed him. But while they were detaining the stolen vehicle driver, the pickup truck driver began to flee the scene. Authorities re-engaged their sirens and followed him, and he surrendered a short time later. Both men were handcuffed and loaded into police vehicles. The pickup truck driver was released from custody about an hour later, authorities said. In 1982, composer Frank Zappa released the single "Valley Girl", with his 14-year-old daughter Moon Unit speaking typical "Valley Girl" phrases. Zappa intended to lampoon the image, but after the song's release there was a significant increase in the "Valspeak" slang usage, whether ironically spoken or not. The 1983 film Valley Girl starring Nicolas Cage centered on a group of "Valley Girl" characters and featured several characterizations associated with their lifestyle (such as going shopping at the mall or "Galleria," suntanning at the beach, and going to parties). The protagonist of the 1995 film Clueless has been described as a caricature of 1990s Valley Girls, though she is actually from nearby Beverly Hills. In her 2015 memoir entitled Wildflower, actress Drew Barrymore says she talks "like a valley girl" because she lived in Sherman Oaks from the age of 7 to 14.
