We are glad to have this wonderful occasion to talk about our greatest respect for you, about the adoration of your beauty and tenderness. We know that a woman’s heart is the most faithful, her forgiveness is the most perceptive and mother’s love is truly infinite,” the President said. Vladimir Putin didn’t miss an opportunity to read a poem in honour of women, as tradition, written by the Russian poet Andrei Dementiev: ‘We are conquered by the woman's soul. And her youth ... And motherhood, And her graying, when that time has come. While I'm alive, I'll pray to them. Love to other delights I prefer. The Lord revealed to us woman, as a miracle, Entrusting the world with this beauty.’ Video ID: 20180307 061 Video on Demand: http://www.ruptly.tv Contact: [email protected] Twitter: http://twitter.com/Ruptly Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/Ruptly

Russian/Eng/Nat For florists across Russia, March the 8th is one of their biggest days of the year. Every year Russian men rush to the flower market early in the morning to buy flowers for their loved ones to mark International Women's Day. The frenzy of flower-buying in Russia on March 8th may be partly due to a collective showing of male-guilt, in a country where a woman's work truly is never done. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "Their (women's) situation is pitiful. It has a lot do with an economic crisis - it is especially difficult for them. Men hardly could provide a household so women have to bear a lot on their shoulders these days." SUPER CAPTION: Michail Zheleznyov So once a year the men show their appreciation by buying flowers for the lady or ladies in their lives. Started at the beginning of the century as a day of struggle for liberation and equal rights for women, in Russia it became a nationwide trend for men to congratulate all women on their attainment of equality. It has evolved into a uniquely Russian occasion, losing any reference to the celebration of International Women's Day on this date across the globe. In Russia it is simply called the March 8th holiday. But it is celebrated with an almost religious fervor -- which of course is good news for florists. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "Everything will be OK for us. There is no doubt. It is true that the hardships of life kind of put us down lately, but I hope with a new President elected soon, things will get better. I hope we'll have a young President and he will take an initiative and make things better." SUPER CAPTION: Lyudmila (no last name), Flower seller But the roses that many Russian women will receive today can't compensate for the a grim reality of their everyday lives. With the country deep in a economic crisis, women are the first to lose jobs and the last to find them, while wage disparity and sexism are rampant. Presidential and parliamentary elections are scheduled for later this month, and many are hopeful that a new government will bring positive changes for women. Russian President Vladimir Putin mounted a horse on Thursday and cantered with female police officers in footage broadcast across Russia ahead of International Women's Day. Putin has carefully cultivated a macho image during his 19 years in power with photo-ops depicting him riding a horse bare-chested in Siberia, taking a dip in icy water, and piloting a firefighting plane. The 66-year-old leader, whose ratings have slipped in recent months, was shown on state television in jeans and a jacket with a raised collar, riding a brown horse flanked by female police officers on white horses. English/Nat NB: JAMES BROWN MUSIC WAS RECORDED AT FASHION SHOW Stalin made them equal. World War 2 made them heroes. Today, Russia's cut-throat market economy has left them impoverished. March 8th is International Women's Day -- a holiday when all women, from little girls to grandmothers are honoured. But it will take more than flowers and chocolate to improve the difficult lives of today's Russian woman. In Russia its flowers for everyone on Women's Day. Vendors do a brisk business on March 8th, when Russian men rush to buy bouquets for all the women in their lives -- from secretaries to wives. Its the one day a year that women are supposed to be revered in Russia. But what about the rest of the year? March 8 may be Women's Day but as Russian's themselves joke, the other 364 days belong to the men. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) " Women have definitely changed, they are more wearied today, they have to focus more on work, they have to put energy now into being successful and its very difficult. These days are very hard for women and unfortunately we don't have enough holidays like this one." SUPER CAPTION: Olga Dzerzhinsky, flower vendor It is certainly a man's world in Russia. With equality of the sexes a long way off, the role of women is still heavily stereotyped. From model to factory worker, to erotic dancer or even street cleaner -- women in Russia have traditionally been seen either as sex symbols or matronly Soviet workers. Female professionals are still a rarity. It was the Soviets who invented Woman's Day. Created in the 1920's, as a form of communist propaganda, Woman's Day was an opportunity to praise Soviet women and their role in the state. During World War II the holiday became even bigger as women were glorified for their heroic role in defeating the Germans. Now those same women who were once heroes are struggling pensioners -- barely subsisting on measly government pensions that have all but reduced Russia's grandmothers to paupers. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "Our difficulties are very complex. Its hard on families because our children are unemployed, they can't find work, our grandchildren are not studying because the teachers are striking for their wages" SUPER CAPTION: Olga Mamotka, World War II veteran These women are lining up to find work -- hundreds applying for just a few openings. Women have suffered the brunt of Russia's economic hardships. Unemployment has a disproportionately female face in Russia, comprising 70% of the unemployed. In fact the jobs are so scarce that many Russian women have turned to prostitution to make ends meet. After sundown Moscow's central streets are filled with sex workers. Police make nightly sweeps, but their arrests barely make a dent in booming business of prostitution. Those who do have jobs are also expected to be homemakers simultaneously. In Russia the roles are still very traditional -- women are expected to do all the cooking cleaning and child rearing. And Russia's glass ceiling is actually an iron curtain. Statistics show that women account for only 10 percent of top or middle-level managers. In the work place women are still viewed mainly as secretaries, not as serious professionals. And sexual harassment is an accepted part of a woman's workday. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "The professional world is like a men's club closed to women, this is how they like to do business, big decisions are made in places like the banya or the casino, places where women are not invited. This is the kind of atmosphere in which women have to operate. They must have so much more in order to succeed." Тhis is my yearly video for Women’s Day in Russia on the 8th of March. Women from outside the Russian culture read out loud and react to typical Women’s Day wishes that we (Russian women) receive every year. After that they give their own wish for Russian women on the Women’s Day. Is Russia sexist? International Women's Day in Modern Context.... International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8th all around the world - but nowhere as prolifically as in Russia and CIS. For one day in a year, you can witness men in various "serious" organisations (police force, the army, etc) engage in "flash mobs" of flower giving to female colleagues and strangers. It is also quite acceptable to turn your usually-serious work place into a "female-friendly" environment, with a touch of "girly" things - usually flowers. Russia also has a day for men - Defender of the Fatherland day on February 23rd. This is not celebrated internationally, unlike it's female equivalent. Is it bad or good to endorse traditional gender roles? I think it is relative. Where the intended message is one of limitation - ie. women may only participate in child rearing or "women's jobs" - then that is not a message of inclusivity and personal freedoms. But where the intention is to celebrate a woman's personal choice to do that which only women can do - that is quite a different message. To recognise women as primary caregivers, where the quality of that care has direct repercussions on society is an important aspect of feminism. It is noteworthy also that Russia has the highest number of female CEO's in the world, irrespective of a cultural norm that prefers traditional gender associations. Around 45% of senior managers in Russia are female.

Today, March 8th is International Women’s Day. A day dedicated to celebrating the cultural, social, and political achievements of women. And a day to reflect on the issues that they still face globally. International Women’s Day remained a major holiday only celebrated in socialist countries up until the 1970's. Most of the international community did not formally observe the date until 1975. The UN celebrated International Women's Year that year. Since that year the UN officially celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8th. International Women’s Day is now an official holiday in many countries. On this day feminist demonstrations are held in many countries. But when did International Women’s Day start, who started it, and did it help destroy a centuries-old Russian monarchy? Well, Let’s Find Out. Russian/Eng/Nat March the eighth is International Women's Day; in Russia it is a holiday and one of the year's highlights for women. For Russian women, who have borne some of the worst hardships of economic reform, this yearly outpouring of flowers, chocolates and downright chauvinist sentimentality on Women's Day still comes as a welcome break. The rush is on for Moscow's flower sellers, frantically stocking up for Friday's national holiday - International Women's Day. Not only is it a celebration of Russian women, it is also big business for warehouses like this. Before the break-up of the Soviet Union, flowers were flown in to Moscow from the hot climes of the Caucasus and Central Asia. Now, however, Russian wholesalers look West for their supplies with Dutch roses the most common, and the most expensive. But like the rest of the country, Russia's flower sellers have been hit by the recession SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "Our trade is suffering from people not receiving their wages. So this year for the eighth of March people are coming up and asking the price for single stems so we won't be buying as many as last year SUPER CAPTION: Olga, flower seller But Russian President Boris Yeltsin can still afford to throw a party for Russia's women. On Wednesday evening he held a reception and concert for over a hundred prominent women. Studiously gallant, Yeltsin won the hearts of those present, not least his wife. And with the Presidential elections only a hundred days away, he was hoping his performance won him their votes too. Women have fared worst of all under Russia's economic reforms, often the first to be laid off by companies undergoing cutbacks. But as the crowds at this clothing exhibition testify, things are starting to look up for some. Once the exclusive territory of Russia's super-rich, a burgeoning middle class is now staking its claim, in Moscow at least, to a taste of the good life. Russia's women, beset by difficulties, say it only adds to a certain uniquely Russian charm. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Our women are the best in the world. Because where can you find a woman who has so many troubles in her life but she's looks so beautiful and she's so funny, so lively. I think our women are strongest all over the world and I think men from all countries will prefer Russian women, everywhere." SUPER CAPTION: Yulia, student March the eighth is at least one day's break from the grind of looking after children and husbands - invariably following a full day at the workplace to boost the family income. The onslaught of flowers and chocolates may strike the West as little more than sentimental chauvinism. But for the women of the former U-S-S-R, equal rights meant equal rights to back- breaking labour, and a little sentimentality still goes a long way. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "Maybe they don't have this holiday in the West because over there all 365 are for women. That's what I've heard. They have the ability to pay attention to their women everyday. SUPER CAPTION: Igor Denisov, businessman All but unknown in most other countries, International Women's Day is a throwback to the old days of the U-S-S-R. But unlike other relics of the Soviet past, this is one holiday even the most committed anti-communist reformers don't dare to abolish. International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women's Day is marked on the 8th of March every year. It is a major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet bloc. In many regions, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and St Valentine's Day. In other regions, however, the original political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. Female members of the Australian Builders Labourers Federation march on International Women's Day 1975 in Sydney The mimosa (technically, the Silver Wattle) is the symbol of the celebrations of Women's day in Italy and Russia The first IWD was observed on 19 March 1911 in Germany following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. The idea of having an international women's day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th century amid rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions In 1910, Second International held the first international women's conference in Copenhagen (in the labour-movement building located at Jagtvej 69, which until recently housed Ungdomshuset). An 'International Women's Day' was established. It was suggested by the important German Socialist Clara Zetkin, although no date was specified. The following year, 1911, IWD was marked by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, on March 19. In the West, International Women's Day was first observed as a popular event after 1977 when the united Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for Women's Rights and International Peace. Demonstrations marking International Women's Day in Russia proved to be the first stage of the Russian Revolution of 1917. Following the October Revolution, the Bolshevik Alexandra Kollontai persuaded Lenin to make it an official holiday in the Soviet Union, and it was established, but was a working day until 1965. On May 8, 1965 by the decree of the USSR Presidium of the Supreme Soviet International Women's Day was declared a non working day in the USSR "in commemoration of the outstanding merits of Soviet women in communistic construction, in the defense of their Fatherland during the Great Patriotic War, in their heroism and selflessness at the front and in the rear, and also marking the great contribution of women to strengthening friendship between peoples, and the struggle for peace. But still, women's day must be celebrated as are other holidays."

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Bryansk on Wednesday to visit the new perinatal centre of the Bryansk City Hospital No.1, congratulating the centre's female employees on International Women's Day. SOT, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian): "Don't men work here? First of all, I would like to congratulate you on March 8, and of course with the opening and the beginning of the work of the centre. I am sure that it will be interesting for you to work here. For any specialist, in any field, when a person starts working at a modern perspective level, it is always the second wind in the profession. Especially in your profession, it is so noble and so requested, it is needed in our country in particular. You know about the problems with demography. Thank God, in recent years we managed to shift this situation in a positive way, and no one expected or believed that all our programs for supporting demography will work."
