7 Killer Sales Questions

As business owners, we love doing the things we're great at - you know, serving clients and such. Then sometimes, we have to throw on our 'salesman' hat and sell our stuff...which isn't always our strong suit. What you want: make the sale What you fear: being salesy, pushy, creepy, annoying, etc. So how do you eliminate the awkward part and get on with your money-making mojo? I'll show you... Here are 7 of my favorite questions that dig deep, uncover your prospect's real priorities, overcome objections, and get the sale. Minus the awkward. The first is a great question if the first question you’re getting right now is, “How much do you charge?” Often times it means that people don’t know what else to ask- they may not know what they don’t know. This first question you can ask will help put you back in the drivers’ seat of the sales conversation. “Sure, I can help you with that. Is it ok if I ask you a couple questions so I can give you the most accurate information?” Now you’ve taken control, and have an opportunity to ask them some really good questions, pull out some priorities other than price. There are always other buying considerations other than price and this gives you a chance to find out what those are for that prospect. It also gives you a chance to articulate your value, to say some things that set you apart so that once you do get to the price question they know all the other factors that are important to consider when making this buying decision. Here’s the second question: “Tell me more about that?” That’s a super simple one and a good fall-back question. Always keep it in your back pocket if you’re at a loss of what to say next. Ask them to expand on that, and they will. You can take a deeper cut, and sometimes find out what their real fears, concerns, and frustrations are. Here’s the next question: “So how do you want ___ to be different by [time frame]?” The first blank is for the main benefit you offer, and the second is for the time frame is reasonable to expect a result for what you offer. So if you sell marketing services, you can say, “So how do you want your lead flow to be different 12 months from now?” Now you can find out what’s really important to the client and shift from selling on price or features you offer to selling on the benefit that they’re after. Here’s the next question: “Suppose we were having this conversation x months from now, looking back, what would have to have happened for you to feel really happy with ___?” This one is similar to the last, but takes it from a different angle. The first blank is the time frame and the second is the benefit of what you offer. If I were asking this, I would say something like, “Let’s say we’re sitting together 12 months from now, what would have to have happened in your business in order for you to feel really happy with your progress?” So it gets them to tell you what their priorities are. Here’s the next question: “What factors other than price are important for you to consider when making this decision?” This is a great question to overcome the price objection, as obviously price is a consideration, but it’s not the only one. So if you’re getting the price objection further on in the sales conversation, this one is a great one to ask. Here’s the sixth question: “How does that fit with what you had in mind?” This is one to ask when you’re moving toward the closing and it’s about time for the prospect to make a decision, or you’ve just presented your price, proposal, or solution you offer. It’s super soft – not pushy, not salesy, and gives the prospect time to think and bring up any objections or areas of concerns that you haven’t addressed yet before you go in for the sale. It’s a very comfortable closing question. The last question is along the same lines when it comes to closing. “So what do you think we should do from here?” Another very simple, low-pressure question that allows the prospect to tell you exactly what they want to happen next, or allows you to overcome any objections before offering the solution. In this video Mat Shore innovation expert explains in 6 simple steps the best way to write a Value Proposition. First one element of Value propositions is a target and definition of the target by segmenting the target into more specific focused people. • Based on their attitudes • Based on their beliefs • Based on their behavior • Based on their location, gender, age, We can start to narrow down who it is we're talking about and that's the essential first step of creating a value proposition and if we're in business-to-business there may be multiple people in that value chain that we need to consider the next part of any good concept. Value proposition is a definition of what problem we intend to solve which we are going to call the insight and the insight relates directly to the target it will be the target biggest unmet need and they will have many problems of unmet needs but we are focused on the one that is most significant to them because in solving that escalates the value of our proposition Next thing our third element is to understand what alternatives already exist in the market for the customer to resolve that problem who directly or indirectly already delivers against that problem and why they fail to adequately solve it because of course if the alternatives are solving the problem perfectly well already then the size of the opportunity is limited for us. Fourth aspect of our value proposition will then be our promise what we call the Benefit. We don't really get to control the benefit. The benefit is a function of the insight if the customer says to us do you know what my biggest problem is this is my biggest problem then the benefit we offer can't be anything else. It has to be a commitment to solve that problem nothing else. We can't have multiple benefits we need only have to one benefit to solve the big unmet need of the customer but of course the customer will then say well hang on a minute I don't believe that you can promise that I don't believe you can make my biggest problem go away give me a reason to believe. That you can so the fifth element of a good value proposition is what we call the reason to believe the proof that we can make the benefit come to life and deliver the promise to solve the insight despite the fact all those alternatives have failed to do so in the past Then ultimately most good value propositions end on a point of superiority some people call it a discriminator a differentiator a USP a unique selling point ultimately what we want to be able to say is in this value proposition that we're offering you. we can deliver the benefit to a high degree of uniqueness and superiority over everything else that exists in the market These all contain those six core elements and when they're presented to the customer in the form of a written concept they make the story believable and compelling and over many years that format has been proven to test well. You come up with killer content that makes your expertise shine. Step 3. You pitch your services in your author bio. Relevancy is very important here. Step 4. You wait for clients to come in or you keep repeating the process until you get clients. Depending on which blog you target and a lot of other factors, not every guest post will result in clients for you. That’s why it’s important to target the best blogs and put some effort into your guest posts. Most importantly, you should make sure to pitch your services at the right time. The CFPB has released an outline of a possible rule limiting arbitration clauses in consumer financial product and service agreements and is currently working on a proposed rule for public comment. The outline indicates that the proposed rule would eliminate arbitration agreements that limit consumer participation in class actions and require the submission to the CFPB (and, potentially, public posting) of arbitral claims and awards. The proposal would affect entities covered by the Consumer Financial Protection Act, including providers of consumer financial products and services offering credit cards, checking and deposit accounts, prepaid cards, money transfer services, certain auto loans, short-term, small dollar loans, and private student loans. The CFPB may expand the rule to include additional consumer financial products and services, such as payment processing. It’s effective, it’s fast, it’s easy and even today it’s still one of the most underpriced ways to drive sales to your business. But if you’re just starting out or just want to test a product, $300-$500 can still be a lot of money to spend up front. When you think of an Instagram influencer you think of somebody with a massive page with millions of followers and it’s probably their full-time job. But what if I told you smaller users with 10-20 thousand followers could be just as, if not more effective and they’ll promote your website for FREE? I call it “Micro-Influencer Marketing” What you’re going to do is contact smaller influencers with 5k-10k followers and offer them a commission for each product they sell through their custom link in exchange for sharing it on their profile. Why does this convert so well? Keep in mind that people in this range probably aren’t making much from their pages and some aren’t even in the game to make money at all. So proposing a way to make some extra cash from their passion is a pretty tempting offer. 🎧 Music: Wide Awake (Instrumental) by Davis Absolute STEP 1 - SET UP YOUR AFFILIATE PROGRAM ⚙️ There are multiple great apps for setting up an affiliate program in Shopify, but the one we’ll be using is free and effective. 👉Affiliate by AAAwebtore App 1. Install the app in your store 2. Setup your affiliate commission rates 3. Customize your automatic emails 4. Grab your affiliate signup link. 5. Add signup link to your store navigation STEP 2 START COLLECTING A LIST OF MICRO-INFLUENCERS 👩‍💻 You can either do this by hand on your phone and enter the details into a spreadsheet, or use a free tool like Deep Social to do the work for you. 👉 Deep Social 👉 Grin (Another Influencer Search Tool) Remember, you’re looking for people in your niche with 5,000 - 10,000 followers. You can either enter this information into a Deep Social search or do it manually on your phone. To start finding smaller profiles, simply go to one of the bigger influencers in your niche and keep clicking the down arrow (🔽) until you see what you’re looking for. STEP 3 - CONTACT YOUR NEW LIST OF INFLUENCERS ✉️ Once you have a list collected it’s time to start recruiting these people into your affiliate program. The way you're going to do this is by sending out what's called a "mail merge" to everybody on your list. Mail merges are a great way to send mass amounts of personalized cold emails all at once and can save you hours of work. You can use a professional tool like YesWare that is loaded with additional features for follow-ups, link tracking etc, but you can also use a basic free plugin like the one I'll link below to get started. 👉 Mail Merge With Attachments (Google Sheets App) 👉 YesWare 👉 SalesHandy (Another great cold email tool) Below is the email template I used in the video. It’s simple to the point and I’ve gotten some good results with it. Just replace everything in brackets with your own information. Just format your sheet to match the templates they give you, run a test and send them on their way. You can also copy a similar message to the one pasted below and DM people right on Instagram, but you’ll need to switch up the wording each time to avoid getting banned and it’s might become hard to keep track of who you’ve already contacted. So if you’re feeling totally lost on how to pitch your business, then here are 3 steps to follow which will entice people to want to know more. Step 1 of how to pitch your business in 60 seconds The problem. As a business, you exist to solve a problem potential clients might have. You are there to ease pain points. So that’s where you start. Address the problems your business solves. Steve So why does this work? Because it simplifies what you do to a level anyone can understand and allows people to build an image of your business that’s comfortable to them. Step 2 of how to pitch your business in 60 seconds The solution Ideally, you want to try and tell a story relating to your business. Something that sums up an achievement or something you’re proud of. So why does this work? There are plenty of industries out there, for examples accounts or personal trainers, that to the average person all offer the same thing. Telling a story that’s unique to you will set you apart. You won’t find another accountant with the same story and the passion you tell it with will engage anyone listening. Step three of how to pitch your business in 60 seconds Sell the mission Our mission is to put people back at the front of businesses. So we don’t need to talk about how we do this using video, that’s just a tool that gets us a result. Focus on the sole reason for your businesses existence. So if you’ve come this far in the video and are thinking “I don’t have a mission” You probably do but you just need to spend a bit of time thinking about exactly what it is. So there we have it. It’s a big enough deal to figure out who to contact for an initial phone call, let alone figuring if that therapist will be the right fit within that call. And if a therapist charges out of pocket, that’s a huge expense to waste your money on if it’s not a good fit! I get it. So much so that when I first started out in private practice I seriously considered offering a free initial session to my clients. But with some thought I opted not to. Here are some pros and cons to reflect on if you’re considering offering a free initial session in private practice: PROS: 1. Putting the client’s needs first. This is a huge pro of offering a free initial session. Of course, clients who are a bit unsure of whether you might be the best fit for them will likely be more happy to schedule with you if they know the session is free. 2. Get more clients to schedule an initial session. The hope of many therapists is that by offering a free session, more clients will schedule an initial appointment and then feel safe enough to continue as a paying client. Unfortunately, it’s been my experience observing colleagues who offer a free initial appointment that most of the time, this is not the case. CONS: 1. Lost income. Think about it: how many free session time slots are you willing to offer up per week? 1? 3? 5? You may get people calling to schedule simply to snag their free session, so your lost income might be pretty significant. Even one free intake per week amounts to $660 in lost income per month at my fee. That’s nearly $8000 per year! 2. Time Investment. If you meet face-to-face, even if it’s free of charge, you are officially this person’s therapist. The client must complete the initial paperwork and you need to start a file for this client with the appropriate documentation. For me, doing the affiliated paperwork after an intake session takes at least 5 times longer than writing a progress note for an ongoing client. That’s a HUGE time investment for no pay. I have seen therapists offer a free initial session without completing the affiliated documentation unless the client schedules a follow-up session. This is a HUGE no-no. It’s illegal to offer your therapeutic services without informed consent and completing the required documentation. 3. Lack of client investment. Sometimes offering things for free is not always good for business. By offering a free initial session, you may have several people come through who are not interested in pursuing more than one or two sessions, or who are not especially invested in the work of therapy. Working with unmotivated clients without getting paid is a recipe for therapist resentment and burnout. Whether you decide to offer a free initial in-person consultation or not, be sure to weigh all the pros and cons before making the decision that’s best for you and your clients.

Large companies have plans with hundreds of pages; small companies can get by with a half-dozen sheets. Put your marketing plan in a three-ring binder. Refer to it at least quarterly, but better yet monthly. For small companies, this is often the best way to think about marketing. Things change, people leave, markets evolve, customers come and go. Later on we suggest creating a section of your plan that addresses the medium-term future--two to four years down the road. But the bulk of your plan should focus on the coming year. You should allow yourself a couple of months to write the plan, even if it's only a few pages long. Developing the plan is the "heavy lifting" of marketing. While executing the plan has its challenges, deciding what to do and how to do it is marketing's greatest challenge. Most marketing plans kick off with the first of the year or with the opening of your fiscal year if it's different. Who should see your plan? All the players in the company. Firms typically keep their marketing plans very, very private for one of two very different reasons: Either they're too skimpy and management would be embarrassed to have them see the light of day, or they're solid and packed with information which would make them extremely valuable to the competition. You can't do a marketing plan without getting many people involved. No matter what your size, get feedback from all parts of your company: finance, manufacturing, personnel, supply and so on--in addition to marketing itself. This is especially important because it will take all aspects of your company to make your marketing plan work. Your key people can provide realistic input on what's achievable and how your goals can be reached, and they can share any insights they have on any potential, as-yet-unrealized marketing opportunities, adding another dimension to your plan. If you're essentially a one-person management operation, you'll have to wear all your hats at one time--but at least the meetings will be short! What's the relationship between your marketing plan and your business plan or vision statement? Your business plan spells out what your business is about--what you do and don't do, and what your ultimate goals are. It encompasses more than marketing; it can include discussions of locations, staffing, financing, strategic alliances and so on. It includes "the vision thing," the resounding words that spell out the glorious purpose of your company in stirring language. Your business plan is the U.S. Constitution of your business: If you want to do something that's outside the business plan, you need to either change your mind or change the plan. Your company's business plan provides the environment in which your marketing plan must flourish. The two documents must be consistent.
