SEGMENT 2: PRODUCTS and SERVICES By Patrick Dengel This is Segment 2 of 13 segments in which I am discussing building a business plan following a 13 step outline. Whether the items sold are new or similar to others, there are several key questions the entrepreneur must answer. These surround the WHAT, WHO, WHEN, WHERE and WHY: WHAT: Let's start with the WHAT. In one (1) sentence, the entrepreneur should be able to give a definite description of what the business sells and services. An example would be: I sell Trendy fashion shoes to 20-40 year old Women. I am an automobile mechanic that repairs engines as well as preventative maintenance such as oil changes. Another descriptive example would be: My restaurant sells home cooked meals as well as catering. I realize that businesses can have many products and services, but usually, there is one major product or service that carries the business. WHO: The WHO are the targeted customers willing to consider one's product or services. The Entrepreneur must ask themselves WHO would continually buy the products and services. Demographic information is not just how many available customers there are in an area, but also about the behavioral and emotional characteristics and needs of the customers. Likewise are the socio-economic impacts regarding the community and the customers residing there? Targeted customers must feel that the products / services meet a need and are affordable. WHEN: Our commerce society revolves around cycles. In any given year, we have 12 months which have 18 and more different shopping periods. To name a few, we have Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Easter, Memorial Day, Labor day and many others. Customers follow buying cycles and are dependent on paydays, credit, days of the week and so forth. Some products and services can be periodic and can be limited based on a variety of cycles. The WHEN can be a significant determiner as to the availability of customers purchasing products and services. WHERE: As our technology increases and our global markets expand, the WHERE is becoming an important part of the products and services. We no longer live in a buying community that serves regional areas. We have co-op buying markets; internet/global sales; large inventory stores such as Wal-Mart, Target, Lowes etc; and secondary/tertiary competition. In addition, customers look for convenience, travel time, parking and oftentimes multi-task shopping experiences. Location is becoming an even more important factor in selling products and services. And finally WHY: WHY is one of those open-ended questions that cannot be easily dismissed. A Business Entrepreneur should ask themselves : 'Why should a customer buy their products and services?' The easy answer might be that the price could be lower and the quality will be much higher. Sometimes entrepreneurs might see that there is no other business in the area and consequently, it would be assumed that a lot of people would frequent the business. There is a variety of answers and the closer we come to answering the WHY, the more our products /services will be considered.

After that, I get into the template of the business plan, and explain what each section of this document should contain, how to write it, and how to impress investors or savvy business people. Because after all, what makes a good business plan isn't the outline or the template, but the business strategy and business model that you outline in the document. The tutorial template outline covers the executive summary, writing your product or service description section, creating your marketing plan and how to think about and write the section of the business plan that discusses your revenue streams, projected (pro forma) revenue and earnings, how to write your unit economics section, and how to write the section of the document that talks about your founding executive team, advisors and mentors. You should also create a section explaining whether there are any previous investors in the business. Plus, you should create an appendix which contains your sensitive financial information that you may want to show to investors, but not random other people. So you can add and remove the appendix from the business plan whenever you want. Lastly, you should create a financials section. The financials are more complex and intimidating than other sections so I cover that in more detail in my course on how to write a business plan. So now you have a free template, an easy outline and you should be reading to start writing, creating and doing some fantastic business planning. Good luck, and I hope that this tutorial and the other resources I posted will help you write a very good (or great) business plan to impress investors and whoever else you want to impress. And most importantly, I wish you best of luck growing your company and making it a success. You can use this tutorial to write a business plan for a restaurant, cleaning business, local service, ecommerce, home repair, gelato or frozen yogurt shop, deli or sandwich shop, t-shirt printing company, elearning company, day spa, hair salon or beauty salon, hardware store or shop, personal trainer, milkshake shop, restaurant or diner, bar or pub, virtual assistant or personal concierge, affiliate, mobile app, bookstore or a kids store or a boutique, non profit, pool hall, liquor store, hookah lounge, or any other kind of business.

My Marketing Plan Process - 6 Steps to Marketing Any Business (Products or Services) // Have you ever marketed your company and just found that everything you're doing isn't working? Today I'm going to share with you my marketing planning process, six steps to marketing any company. You need a plan. The first thing you need to do, is to define your goals. Do you want more traffic for brand awareness? Do you want more revenue? Do you just need more leads? Are you trying to get more e-commerce sales? You got to define your goals, because if you don't define your goals, you're not going to know exactly what you need to take in order to achieve them. The second thing you need to do is understand your customer. I'm not talking about, hey, you sell toilet paper, you provide mortgage loans and your customer is looking for that. That's just on the surface level. I'm talking about really understand your customer. Because once you understand that, you can leverage that to make sure that they choose you. And the way you understand your customers is you talk to them. It's not just about looking at analytics like Google Analytics. It's about surveying them, do tools like SurveyMonkey. It's about picking up the phone, dialing them, talking to them, getting feedback, showing them your website, showing them your product, showing them your marketing messages. If you truly understand your customers, you can figure out what makes them tick, and then from there, you'll boost your sales, traffics, and leads. The third step you need to do is assess key strengths. Just because marketing has all these different channels, doesn't mean that you should focus on all of them at once. Yes, eventually, you want to take an omnichannel approach, which is leveraging all the different marketing channels, but at the beginning, you need to assess your key strengths, and then leverage those first. Step four, pick one marketing channel. You already assessed your key strengths. Now it's time to go with one channel. You may have five strengths, you may have one strength. You want super laser focus, because when you tackle one channel first, and you do really well with it, you're much more likely to get results. Now, it's time for you to do competitive research, look at your competitors, what's working for them? Once you figure out what's working for them, you can then get a good understanding of what you should replicate and what you should avoid. The last thing you want to do is do the opposite of what your competitors are doing. Especially when they're already established and making money. So what I want you to do is head over to Ubersuggest, put in a URL of your competitors. You'll see a report, it shows either traffic, shows you their top pages. When you click on top pages, you can see things like their most popular pages, how many links they have, how many social shares each of these pages have, what keywords they're ranking for. This will all give you ideas on what you should be focusing on and what you shouldn't be. Step six, this last but not least, define how you're going to make money. Even though you're attracting people to your site, it doesn't mean that they're just going to raise their hand and be like, hey Neil, let me throw some money at you. But the thing is, getting traffic is only half the battle. You got to convert those people. You need to figure out how you're going to make money. And I wish there was a generic blank answer, but it's different for every single business. But once you have that, you can then come up with ways to figure out how to maximize the conversion and drive people down that path. Whether it's through tools like HelloBar that helps you collect emails. Or whether it's tools like Subscribers, that helps people get back to your site, and you can push them to, let's say, your Amazon pages. In my last video, we established that a business plan needs to take you on a journey, or "quest", and ask you the tough but necessary questions you need to answer in order to build a Productive business. That's why I've carefully crafted a very simple step-by-step process, or guided journey, through my Signature Seven Questions that you need to be able to answer in order to build the business and life you want as a creative entrepreneur. Quest #1 - What Is It? (i.e. Offerings) Before you can figure out the "Who" or the "How", you need to know exactly "What" your Offerings (i.e. your products and/or services) will be - including their design & features, but also their benefits and how they will add value to your customers. Quest #2 - Who Else Is Selling It? (i.e. Business Landscape) Once you know "What" you are selling, you can figure out "Who" your competitors are - those in the same corner of your target market, or selling similar products/services, or addressing a similar customer demand. Quest #3 - Who Will Buy It? (i.e. Marketing Plan) Knowing "Who" is selling similar products/services can help you identify "Who" your target customers are - who else is looking for the very products/services and solutions you will offer - and how you can reach them at the moment they are ready to buy, with the right messaging to compel them to buy. Quest #4 - Who Will Help You Build It? (i.e. Operational Plan) Once you know "What" kind of business and Offerings you want to build, you can figure out the best process for building them, and who you will need on your team to help you do that. Quest #5 - How Much Will It Cost? (i.e. Financial Plan) Once you know "What" you will build, and "How" you will build it, you can start to break down the costs of building it all - an initial financial breakdown of your expected key business expenses and costs around producing, marketing and distributing your Offerings over the next few years. Quest #6 - How Much Is It Worth? (i.e. Pricing Strategy & Company Executive Summary) Now that you know how much it will all cost you, it's time to realize how much it's all worth - to you, your customers and the marketplace - to develop your pricing strategy, as well as give value to your larger mission, unique vision, and goals for success. Quest #7 - How Will You Achieve It? (i.e. Action Plan) By this step, you will have a complete business plan. But then you need to actually put that plan into Action, by defining actionable & measurable steps that will help you realize the success you envision and the goals you've set for yourself. And voila! Those are my Signature Seven Questions (or "Quests") for your entrepreneurial journey to becoming a Productive Artist. What is the nature of this market? The first thing to consider is your target group. Consider this question: who are you trying to reach? Many people respond, “Oh, everyone. Everyone has to eat. Everyone has to go to the hairdresser. My target group is everyone.” When you take this approach, you are near enough condemning yourself to failure. Though it might seem tricky, it’s crucial that you specify your target group. Where do they live? What do they do? How old are they? What kind of hobbies do they have? Am I targeting males or females? Define your target group very clearly. Some firms even sketch out their target group without familiarising themselves with their targets in real life – they have no customer contact. They pull together an image of how they see their typical customer, and proceed according to that. This is because, nowadays, it is impossible to design a catch-all product or service. Everyone has their own individual identity. You must identify a particular target group and establish yourself within it. Later, you will have chance to expand; but you should begin with a relatively clear-cut target group. When you have recruited this group as fans of your product or brand, you can start to broaden your horizons a little. Consider where else your product could have relevance. Or perhaps you could expand your range of products within this particular target group. Whatever you decide to do later, it is crucial that you identify precisely who you target group is. Do not adopt this “for-all” approach - the mentality that all who pass by your store will automatically become your customers. This will not be the case. If you try to accommodate this, you will end up with an assortment of goods that - like your target group - is not clearly defined. Imagine someone entering your shop. “What is this place actually for?” they will ask themselves. “What’s this? Is this a toyshop or a shoe shop or a shop for fur coats? There’s nothing they don’t sell!” Without a clear-cut target group, you’ll end up offering a confusing, nonsensical array of products. You won’t win any proper customers, and the whole thing will be doomed to fail from the off. The target group is crucial! Next to be addressed, of course, are your competitors: who is already established in the market? What are their strengths and weaknesses? It happens frequently that a budding entrepreneur will get their venture going and only realise afterwards that there’s an identical store two streets away. Now, this doesn’t necessarily have to be a disaster: you can drive your competitors out of the market. However, this will be considerably more difficult than simply establishing a business for which there is no competition.

"We’re here today to walk you through a two-part series that’s going to help you go through the basics of writing out a business plan to start your trucking company. What is a business plan? Well, a business plan is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a plan for your business’ future. It’s a way to think through how you want to run your business and coming up with strategies for how to achieve those. When you’re developing your business plan for your trucking company it’s important to think about what types of services you’re going to provide. These services can be hauling long haul over-the-road, intrastate or interstate, expedited freight, or just full loads. Who are you going to hire? It’s important to think about who you’re going to hire for your trucking company. When you think about who you’re going to hire that really means are you going to be your driver or are you going to hire a driver? Are you going to have an office staff that is going to help you do your paperwork or are you going to do all of that on your own? Think about your taxes, are you going to need to have a tax consultant? Who is going to be doing your taxes, like your quarterly IFTA taxes and then your regular IRS taxes? Are you going to need additional services like and ELD provider or fuel card? Those are all considered to be staff support so it’s important to decide who you are going to want to help you with your trucking company. What products or services will you need? You’ll need an ELD that tracks your hours of service compliance. You’ll need an alcohol and drug program in place for a consortium you’ll need your drivers to be in for testing every quarter. You’ll also want a discount fuel card because it offers good savings at the pump. Which can help you gain additional cash flow for your trucking company. Will you need freight factoring? Freight factoring can give you cash flow immediately for your freight bills and provides back-office support so that you aren’t having to collect on your freight bills yourself. What will be your competitive edge? You can build a competitive edge with a good safety score, reputation with your customers, and industry experience. Where will you find your customers? A really important thing to think about is where you’re going to get your customers. So, if you’re just starting out, you’re probably going to be using a load board, where you go to find general spot-market freight. If you already have customers or connections that you can take advantage of then use those relationships to gain established customers for the long-run. Lastly, there is also dispatch services that are out there, and they will coordinate your loads for you. What do you know about your competitors? It’s also important to think about what you already know about your customers. Are they well known in the industry? Maybe they’ve been around longer so their drivers have the experience, or their staff does. Do they have different types of equipment? Maybe it’s newer or older? Those are all things you want to think about when considering the traits of your competitors. What are your main goals? Setting your goals at the outset is important. Do you want to set up a trucking company that will become a family business for future generations? Do you want to expand your trucking company, adding more trucks in the future? Do you want to start your trucking company as a retirement plan? Maybe you just want to see the country. So, what are your goals? What is your short-term growth plan? Are there areas that you can cut costs in the short-term? Do you want to go from leasing your truck to owning your truck? You’ll also want to identify where the break-even point is for your trucking company. What is your long-term growth plan? Now you’ll also want to have a long-term growth plan in place, things you want to think about are adding trucks and drivers over the long run. Another thing to think about is reinvesting a percentage of your profits back into your business to use over the long-term.
