Innovation - Students of Product Design Episode1

12:49
This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. I have a lot more planned, so please be patient, stay tuned and follow me, so that you can be alerted to when the next video is launched. www.producttank.co.uk

How product design can change the world | Christiaan Maats | TEDxUniversityofGroningen

13:07
Christiaan Maats is a designer and entrepreneur who challenges the way we look at product design. Going beyond form and function he shows us how products carry deeper layers of meaning and how those layers can connect us to a bigger reality. In this Talk, Christiaan Maats explains how meaningful products can embody the change we want to see in the world and sheds light on his own vision of a circular society that integrates industrial society with its natural roots. Christiaan Maats was born and raised in Groningen, though he studied Industrial Design Engineering at Technical University in Delft. His keen interest in the psychology behind product- and brand experience took him to Sydney, Australia where he conducted a case study titled “Storytelling through Product Design”. Good product design is good storytelling, according to Christiaan. His creation of the world’s first biodegradable shoes that bloom is a perfect example of his philosophy. Christiaan considers himself a practical idealist. He is driven by his passion for innovation and creating products and brands that inspire a better future by making you smile, think and wonder. His refreshing ideas on sustainable innovation disrupt the status quo. Christiaan's diverse background and enthusiasm are great ingredients for an inspiring TEDx Talk that focuses on the society of the future and how to get there. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Product Design at Dublin Institute of Technology

04:42
DIT's Product Design programme is the first of its kind in Ireland. Graduates of the programme have gone on to a variety of successful careers in Ireland and abroad. In the course of this four year honours degree, students are immersed in the various disciplines of product design through a unique interdisciplinary approach -- students develop their knowledge and skill sets through modules in the areas of design, engineering and business. This integrated method produces product designers who have the ability and confidence to be both creative and innovative in whatever role they choose to pursue. It gives them the necessary ability to face the challenges of designing new products and bringing them to market. Graduates of the program have proven themselves. equally comfortable in the design studio, the engineering office and the boardroom. Students learn how to produce accurate physical models of their designs using the extensive studio and prototyping facilities. They also use industry standard design software to bring their projects to fruition. In the capstone module of the programme, students conceptualise, design and develop a novel product. A number of students have developed successful products in this project which they have gone on to pursue and develop further upon graduation. While the final project is important for the students' individual development, a series of team projects over the course of the program help the students to develop interpersonal skills along with an appreciation of team dynamics. Students of the programme have won and been shortlisted for prestigious national and international awards including the Enterprise Ireland All Ireland Student Enterprise Awards, the James Dyson award, the International Forum for Design Concept awards in Hannover, Germany and the Staples Global Eco-easy Challenge in Washington DC, USA. Students of the programme have won and are regular finalists in the DIT Bolton Trust Student Enterprise awards in which they must demonstrate the ability to form their own company, design and develop a new product and produce a viable business plan in tandem. Integrated Product Design - Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft

03:27
The Integrated Product Design (IPD) Master’s programme focuses on teaching how to design user-centered innovative products and product service combinations, based on a balance between the interests of users, business and societal challenges. It covers the entire design process, starting from a design brief and ending with a complete product that is fit for mass or small series production. Thus the emphasis of the IPD master is on teaching conceptualisation and embodiment design, by applying systematic state-of-the-art theories and methodologies, and by integrating user, technology and business aspects. The identity of the IPD Master’s programme is determined by the coherent integration of all these aspects to come to a successful new product proposal; this makes the IPD Master’s programme challenging, exciting and unique. The international product development arena is changing rapidly; products are becoming smarter, better integrated into systems and have to comply with increasingly stringent standards. Product development is moving from an inter-disciplinary to a transdisciplinary occupation, becoming more knowledge intensive and therefore in need of continuous updates of tools and methods. The IPD Master’s programme provides an integrated approach to the disciplines involved: advanced studies in innovative design theory and methods, aesthetics, ergonomics, engineering, and sustainability. The IPD curriculum includes multidisciplinary applied research on innovative product development embedded in its product design projects. http://ipd.msc.tudelft.nl/

Presentations - Students of Product Design Episode 7

22:28
Students of product design episode 7 covers how to give a concept design presentation to a small group, but the techniques can be used for presentations to much larger audiences and will also help with portfolio presentations. A concept design presentation doesn't begin when you sit down in front of the client with a set of drawings, or when you're preparing those drawings a week before. It starts the moment you first meet the client, you need to build relationships. One key to this is to just be interested in the client, people are interesting and with just about everything in life things always go far better if you show you're interested in them. I once saw a quote by Bill Nye, 'Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don't'. So before the presentation, keep talking to your main contact, keep them updated with progress, be interested in what they're up to and their suggestions, good design, good relationships, good business is about continuous communication. The presentation doesn't end once you have shown the last concepts either. You need to close the presentation, by managing expectations, letting the client know when you will need a response to hit the next deadline, helping the client reach an informed decision, agreeing the next stage etc. With any set of concepts, you'll have your favourite, often there's one that's stronger than the others, but any one of the designs a client chooses will be a good outcome, because they will be one of you or your teams designs, you can't loose, unless the client doesn't like any of them. If theres a design you're presenting that you really don't want them to choose, why is it in your presentation. Unless you have to present a series of concepts that a group of people came up with. Then there may be one you don't like, because we all like different things, but as long as it answers the brief, doesn't create confusion or you can't give a strong argument for leaving it out, then it should be included it in your presentation, to give the client breadth of choice. This is important to consider when you work in a team and also a good argument if it is your design that another member is trying to exclude. There are masses of useful links out there to help so as promised in the video, here are some links not necessarily specific to product design which I like and think will be useful: http://muledesign.com/2014/09/13-ways-designers-screw-up-client-presentations https://99designs.com/designer-blog/2013/03/19/5-tips-on-how-to-prepare-a-design-presentation/ http://www.richardbaird.co.uk/2012/05/10/the-designers-guide-to-presentation/ http://www.proedgeskills.com/Presentation_Skills_Articles/difficult_questions.htm This is a good link to how to deal with clients who want to feature creep: https://community.uservoice.com/blog/when-to-build-requested-feature/ In the video I briefly cover how to calm nerves and one relaxation technique that has really helped me, relaxing my shoulders. This is a good link to more relaxation techniques and ways to deal with nerves. http://www.inc.com/larry-kim/15-power-up-tips-to-make-you-a-better-presenter.html http://www.skillsyouneed.com/present/presentation-nerves.html http://lifehacker.com/how-to-calm-your-nerves-before-making-a-terrifying-spee-1677504967 Finally if you have specific questions not answered by a Google search, then you can always post a question on the forums at core77.com to get advice from industry professionals. I hope you enjoy 'Students of Product Design Episode 7' and it helps when you have to give a concept design presentation. More of my work is here: www.producttank.co.uk

Inspiration and a clear vision are the starting points for creative tasks. It's on a blank sheet of paper that they first acquire form, solely through a pen and the hand that guides it. The sketch is the most emotional form of an idea. This is why the designers first work out their ideas exclusively with a pen and paper. The concern here is not feasibility. Instead, the sketch is intended to bring life to the character of the model, which then remains the guiding image throughout the design process.

Once you have a range of ideas, you need to choose which of them you will develop into the final product. If you select the wrong ideas, it could make it much more difficult to produce a successful design. Ideally you should test your designs against the design criteria and try to make an objective decision.

product design rendering and sketching by product tank

06:31
This is a product design sketching and rendering tutorial that I've put together for industrial design students. Sketching is something that I know I should do more of, but we're all busy people, so I've picked up a few drawing and rendering tips along the way to make things faster and look better especially for those of us who know we are not as good as we should be. I would like to thank Ben Davies from Rodd Industrial Design for teaching me most of this stuff, it was a long time ago, but - credit where its due. In this video I set out how product design presentation sheets used to be created using pen and marker techniques, which is making a come back at the moment. I then look at the common mistakes we all make from time to time and how to a few simple things will vastly improve the look of your presentation sheets. Finally I focus on how to make a very professional looking product design presentation sheet in a short space of time using Photoshop and then show that even if you prefer to use drawing programs or apps on your tablet or computer, the process is very much the same. I hope you enjoy the video and if interested in seeing more, hit subscribe, because more good stuff is on its way.

Designing a Product for Amazon FBA

05:57
Episode 2 Get the complete show notes at: https://www.enterchina.co/design-consideration-amazon-fba-private-label-products What's in this episode? Should I hire a designer or use the factory for design? (00:30) It depends where you are in your Amazon in your journey (00:42) If it's your first product it's not a great idea to jump into designing a new idea (00:49) If your selecting an item the factory already has in stock the best option is to just change some small aspect - like color. (01:04) Once you have designs then the next step is finding a factory that will be able to make those changes. (01:26) How to have good communications with Chinese factories about your design needs? (01:36) It can be difficult to work with a factory as a new client. (02:00) The factory will want to see the background on you and money up front. (02:17) Work with a factory on an OEM (off the shelf) product and then approach them about your own design. (02:30) Sourcing companies can make it a lot easier when making your first product from scratch. (02:49) Is it as easy as slapping a label on an OEM product or do we need to change the design? (03:03) When contacting factories have an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) and MEA (Manufacturing Exclusivity Agreement) ready. (03:36) Bring bullet points and a very clear description of your product. (o4:13) Don't just jump in the first email with all the details. Answer their questions first. Designing of Plastic Products for Injection Moulding - Lecture Undercut

42:49
The proper knowledge of materials and its manufacturing process helps a designer to select the best material as per its application. A good designer always consider the limitations and constraints of the materials in design phase since materials not only affects the aesthetics of a product but also decides its manufacturing cost. This course will focus on PLASTICS. They are organic polymers of high molecular mass. Because of their properties like ease of manufacturing, versatility and imperviousness to water they have a wide range of applications from toy industries to space explorations. Plastics are more varied and complicated compared to other materials like metals. As time passes they shrink and creep. They change their properties with change in temperature.
