This video was meant to be filmed months ago.. but y'all know me.. I wanted to get this up because there aren't too many videos around where people showcase their full college accepted art portfolios- notably for RISD and Parsons School of Design. When I was an applicant, I found videos like this very helpful (at least for my anxiety at the time) so I do hope that prospective RISD and Parsons applicants find this informative! I applied to a total of 3 colleges in my senior year of high school, (Rhode Island School of Design, Otis School of Art and Design, and Parsons School of Design). All of the pieces featured in the video were sent in my college application, though some pieces are not shown and were only included in my Otis application. But my ENTIRE portfolio for RISD is up on here! Nothing left out. I didn't talk too much into the actual application process, and I didn't give as much advice as I wanted to. This video is more about showing my portfolio, and if needed, I can put another one up specifically talking about the HOW of applying to art schools. Any questions, just feel free to ask below. Created a how-to product video. A few mistakes were made during shooting the video, such as, never shoot at a park where cars were driving by and a boom mike was needed for the intro but it was a video created on the fly at the owner's request and under their instructions. The video was shot using 0 preparation, in which, most videos should be shot planned and ahead of time. Always plan ahead, check for weather, background noise, and use the proper mics. http://mechatronicmasters.com Los Angeles · Orange County · Inland Empire

Alumni and leading faculty of the UW Master of Human-Computer Interaction + Design discuss the innovative curriculum of this interdisciplinary program and the exciting career connections and opportunities available to graduates. Learn more at: http://mhcid.washington.edu/ Video Transcript: [Jacob] Our human-computer interaction and design program, I think, is ideally positioned to make a big impact in the world right now. Because as more and more products and services come out that are consumer facing and really involve the marriage between technology and people, we have to get that design right. [Carolyn] I think overall the industry is maturing. So before in technology if something worked it was magical, like it's cool that it works. But now, like people just have higher expectations of what will delight them, what will surprise them. [Jacob] The MHCID program is a cross-departmental, interdisciplinary program that is not owned by any one department. And the four departments that contribute faculty, time and resources to the program are the Information School, where I come from, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the Department of Human Centered Design and Engineering, and the Division of Design within the School of Art. [Carolyn] Coming in I was totally surprised at the caliber of who was teaching our program. So there’s at least two or three professors I know in the past two years that were under, in the list of like 30 most innovative under 35. They’re like the people who wrote the book on input, on ubiquitous computing, on persuasive design. [Linda] Well, one of the nice things about this program is that, I think, it is more reflective of the workplace, in the sense that we recruit people from a variety of different backgrounds and perspectives and we bring them together. [Chen-Hung] It's a one year program, project based. It's basically centered with a studio class, and this studio class actually emphasizes on lots of hands-on work. [Carolyn] Our curriculum is focused on three specific sections. So, one research – so learning about the psychology and how, about people, how do you really understand and get at what people want and need, what their pain points are. And then from that, how do you ideate or create a solution to meet those needs. And then, prototyping a technology – learning how to actually execute on those types of ideas. [Linda] The capstone project is an opportunity to take all of the tools and knowledge that students have learned through our core curriculum and their electives and apply it to a more, a bit more intensive lengthy project. [Jacob] The capstone project is a massive portfolio piece that gives them a chance to really show off something substantial to a future employer. [Linda] We actually can provide a lot of hands-on career development support because we have a small cohort. [Carolyn] Since coming to the program I’ve had a ton of interviews with different design agencies, with technology companies, and I actually got a job as a user researcher at Amazon. [Jacob] Facebook and Google have taken some of the hires. We have others going out and doing startups of their own, and we have people working in nonprofits as well. So we're already starting to see a spread of opportunities that students are taking on. [Linda] A huge advantage is Seattle is a fantastic technology industry community and user experience community, and so, in fact, I think we are embedded in an incredibly dynamic global community that models exactly what we're teaching. [Jacob] For HCI and design, it really is maybe the nation’s center of gravity.

A group of 180 Product Design Undergraduate and Masters students at Cardiff Metropolitan University were tasked with producing individual design concepts for Richard’s expedition sled and the accompanying canopy. The aim of the project was to improve the aerodynamics and efficiency of Richard’s equipment ahead of the TeamQuest expedition. The project has culminated in a group of 3 final year Product Design students working closely with Richard to develop a prototype for the canopy, which will accompany him to the South Pole. The sound of the canopy fabric flapping in high winds during Richard’s last expedition, was a major distraction so the new design concept aims to counter this. Richard has met with students Jonathan Innes, Jack Griffiths and Dan Siegel a number of times to provide ongoing feedback throughout the design and testing process.

Imagine driving a car into a brick wall at 35 mph. The force and brain damage you would experience is equivalent to one single tackle experienced by an American football player on the field. Five to ten tackles per game are concussion caliber, resulting in long-term repetitive head trauma, brain deterioration, and various neurocognitive disorders. Major industry players are racing to develop novel helmet technologies and new companies are often at a disadvantage in this highly competitive industry. Our project aims to provide research and development tools for new industry entrants to be profitable, innovative, and successful.

This talk was about refining one's approach to accomplishing tasks. Design Educator and Innovator, Amit Kundal explained to the audience how one must chose a Design approach, over a regular, overused, and world-view guided one, and it's impact on human values and society. Amit kundal has completed his bachelors in Lifestyle Accessory Design from National Institute of Fashion Technology, then contributed to the Indian Craft Industry for 4 years, after which he joined the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur for his Masters in Design. Moving ahead he attended the Product Development Project (PDP) course at Aalto Design Factory in Helsinki, Finland which helped him shape and curate his thought process for design and foster his inclination towards social innovation. He enjoys working as a problem solver bridging the gap between a user and the solution. In his day to day routine he is trying to explore the influence of the concept of democracy on Design Education as in how can we create a design curriculum which is for the students and by the students as well. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Behind the scenes look at the development of the Style range – Kelly Tang As part of the product development of the Style range, Custom Plates worked closely with Fashion Masters in Melbourne to develop some concept designs for the range. In this video we get up close and personal with Kelly who is in her final year studying a Bachelor of Fashion and Business at Fashion Masters. We get to know Kelly better and where she gets her inspiration from. Kelly talks us through the symbolic meaning of her Blossom plate design and the highlights of the fashion industry so far. Transcript: Hi my name is Kelly, I grew up in Melbourne. I’m currently studying at Fashion Masters in my third and final year studying the Bachelor of Fashion and Business. I spend a lot of time outdoors, there’s something about nature that keeps me calm and relaxed and nature is very simple. That’s why I’ve incorporated it in my design. I draw inspiration from both my Chinese heritage and the Melbourne style and combine both components to create something unique. Designing this custom plate for the women of Victoria has definitely been one of the best things I have ever done so far. The Chinese plum blossom symbolises courage and beauty. Being able to grow in the harsh cold winter symbolises that they are able to persevere and get through tough times. We too can go through tough times and come back a stronger person. I like floral, I like something that’s very feminine. I want to use that in my design to appeal to the Victorian females. I believe that my Blossom plate design would look great on any car. It’s a great way to accessorise and stand out. Links: https://www.vplates.com.au/style-range http://www.fashionmasters.com.au *Please note: The Melbourne Lady plate design is currently not available for purchase. Custom Plates are in the early stages of product development for this plate design. Visit vplates.com.au for updates.

Interaction Design (IxD) is a rapidly developing creative field. The ongoing evolution of smart consumer technology has increased the need for well-designed intuitive user interfaces and experiences. Be it a mobile app, the front-end of a web-based service or a complex system involving different digital and physical experiences, interaction design is an essential part of it. Our programme focuses on human-centered design. We work closely with the departments of Graphic Design, Product Design, and Interior Architecture and the programme of Design & Engineering to expand the scope of the curriculum to include data visualisation, digital typography, visual design, motion graphics, GUI prototyping, physical computing, wearable tech and virtual reality. Graduates of the Interaction Design Master’s programme will be well equipped to run complex product/service development projects and to manage international multi-disciplinary teams. Previous experience in design and software development is helpful, but by no means necessary! We welcome everyone who has a serious interest in designing interactions, interfaces and user experiences. In the course of this four year honours degree, students are immersed in the various disciplines of product design through a unique interdisciplinary approach -- students develop their knowledge and skill sets through modules in the areas of design, engineering and business. This integrated method produces product designers who have the ability and confidence to be both creative and innovative in whatever role they choose to pursue. It gives them the necessary ability to face the challenges of designing new products and bringing them to market. Graduates of the program have proven themselves. equally comfortable in the design studio, the engineering office and the boardroom. Students learn how to produce accurate physical models of their designs using the extensive studio and prototyping facilities. They also use industry standard design software to bring their projects to fruition. In the capstone module of the programme, students conceptualise, design and develop a novel product. A number of students have developed successful products in this project which they have gone on to pursue and develop further upon graduation. While the final project is important for the students' individual development, a series of team projects over the course of the program help the students to develop interpersonal skills along with an appreciation of team dynamics. Students of the programme have won and been shortlisted for prestigious national and international awards including the Enterprise Ireland All Ireland Student Enterprise Awards, the James Dyson award, the International Forum for Design Concept awards in Hannover, Germany and the Staples Global Eco-easy Challenge in Washington DC, USA. Students of the programme have won and are regular finalists in the DIT Bolton Trust Student Enterprise awards in which they must demonstrate the ability to form their own company, design and develop a new product and produce a viable business plan in tandem. Behind the scenes look at the development of the Style range - Kahlia-may Gepp As part of the product development of the Style range, Custom Plates worked closely with Fashion Masters in Melbourne to develop some concept designs for the range. This video features third year student Kahlia who’s studying an Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design and Technology at Fashion Masters. Kahlia talks us through the development of her Melbourne Lady plate design and the inspiration behind it. At the same time, we learn about her style and her journey in the fashion industry so far. Transcript: My name is Kahlia and I’m a fashion student at Fashion Masters in Melbourne. I’m about to commence my third year of study at Fashion Masters studying an Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design and Technology. I would describe my style in three words as edgy, fun and a little bit out on guard. VicRoads approached our school looking for students to enter a competition to design number plates for Victorian women and so a whole heap of us entered the competition and my design was one that was chosen. My design is called Melbourne Lady. My inspiration behind it is the Melbourne Lady watching what she does, how she dresses, how she carries herself, very confident, very sure of herself, very feminine, a little bit sexy and a little bit mysterious. I think it’s just a really fun way to accessorise your car. You accessorise yourself, you accessorise your outfit when you go out so why not make your car fashionable and accessorise your car as well. Custom Plates are in the early stages of product development for this plate design. Visit vplates.com.au for updates.
