First off, I want to clear up any confusion you might have about BMI and Body fat percentage. These two are often confused as measuring the same thing. Basically, BMI is a ratio figure between your height and weight. To get your BMI result using the metric system, you simply divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters, then divide the result by your height again. For example: a 73kg man who is 1.78m tall would do the below: 73 / 1.78 / 1.78 = 23.04 BMI Using pounds and inches, you can use the following formula: [weight (lb) / height (in) / height (in)] x 703 As you can see from the formulae above, there is nothing factored for age or amount of body fat. Therefore, a 73kg man could have 10% or 30% body fat and still fall in the exact same BMI range. In reality, they are both very different in terms of physical appearance and most likely physical health. Body fat percentage is exactly what it suggests. It’s the amount of body fat you have on your body. This is obviously completely exclusive to each person, so is a much better indicator than BMI. Low body fat will show more muscle definition so it will depend on what your goals are and help you reach an ideal body fat percentage for males. What Is Your Body Fat Percentage? A Picture Comparison From 40% - 3%
According to this research paper, men who are between 20-40 years old with under 8% body fat are considered “underfat”, whereas a “healthy” range is described as between 8-19%. For women in this same age group, any level under 21% is “underfat” and 21-33% is considered “healthy There are many different methods for measuring body fat, but some are more accurate than others. Hydrostatic weighing and other high-tech machines are expensive and almost impossible for a layperson to access. There are also hand-held devices and scales which measure body fat, but these are often inaccurate. For our purposes, the easiest and most accurate choice is the caliper method. For most people, the ultimate goal is to have a better-looking, healthier body, so don't become obsessed with this or any measurement. It's OK to use it, if only to put a number to the cosmetic changes you see in the mirror, to notice how your clothes fit, or track the effectiveness of your nutrition and training. Different sports have different requirements in terms of body composition. In some contact sports such as American football or rugby, a higher body weight is generally seen as an advantage. In sports such as gymnastics, marathon running, and other weight-bearing activities, a lower body weight and high power-to-weight ratio are extremely important. Therefore, in these sports both low body fat and low body weight are necessary. In sports such as body­building, increasing lean-body mass and increasing body weight without increasing body fat are desir­able. No accepted percentage body fat standards exist for athletes. The ideal body composition is highly dependent on the particular sport or discipline and should be discussed on an individual basis with the coach, physiologist, and nutritionist or dietician. People want to know if burpees are the best exercise for getting the job done. Others want to know if battle ropes or even jump rope are better at burning calories and burning fat. While all of them are at the top of the list for the most calories burned on a minute per minute basis, they still are not the best way to lose five pounds of body fat the fastest. In this video, I show you how you can never outtrain a bad diet. If you refuse to pay attention to the quality of your nutrition and the foods you put in your mouth you are never going to have the low levels of body fat that you desire long term. Sure, anyone can follow a short term diet that allows them to lose fat for a few weeks however if you can’t keep it up then you will never be satisfied with your body fat levels over the course of the year. Mistakenly, people look to exercises as the best way to drop body fat. While you definitely need to train, achieving fat loss is and always will be better accomplished via the right nutrition plan. This goes back to the comment about never being able to outtrain a bad diet. You simply cannot make up enough calorie burn via exercise (even the most intense) to overcome bad food choices. For instance, our very own Jesse is a big sugar fanatic and a worshiper of gummy bears. Just 17 measly gummy bears has 150 calories. Even if Jesse were to do 10 minutes straight of high effort high intensity burpees, he would only burn 120 calories and he would lose that battle with a net calorie gain of 30. Now Jesse, being a hardgainer, is not concerned at the moment with his body fat levels. He was the only one wiling to do the burpees while I talked during the video being the good sport that he is. If you are looking to burn 5 lbs of fat however, you need to be sure that you are paying attention to what really matters. Your nutrition will always be at the top of the priority list for getting that job done. Some people also use Bod Pod, Hydrostatic Weighing, and DEXA but they are not common, so we'll not discuss them here. Although as a side note, if it's convenient for you to get a DEXA scan, I recommend you do it. DEXA scans your entire body with X-rays and tells you very precisely how much fat you have. Then all the rest of your life you'll have that DEXA scan as a reference point for your current body fat level. Hydration status can also mess up with the readings of BIA. You could get very different body fat percentage readings in the same day just because of your hydrations status. So in conclusion BIA is not reliable, I don't recommend you use it. Skin Fold Calipers can be pretty accurate actually depending on the brand and if you use them correctly. There are brands that have you measure up to 6 points on your body and others only one place. They usually give different results. But I think the biggest problem with these calipers is that most people don't know how to use them. You have to grab just the right amount of skin every time - not too much and not too little, and always do it in the same places. Again I think this can be learned with a bit of practice and you can get a result that's within 1 percent of your real body fat percentage. Here's the interesting thing about your waist measurement: it goes up and down with your body fat percentage. For most people, not everybody but for most people, each body fat percentage has a certain corresponding waist measurement. At 6 feet tall, 190lbs ripped is a very advanced level of muscle development. But this person has only been training for 6 months so there's no way that they're close to their genetic potential. This tells me right of the bat that they probably need to lose about 20lbs of fat to get to around 10%. I can almost guarantee it.

The number gives you an idea of how much of your body is composed of fat, muscles, and tissue. Step 1: Know the ranges for women Know the body fat ranges to aim for if you're a woman. 10 percent body fat is the absolute minimum; athletes tend to be in the 14 to 20 percent range. Fit people are at 21 to 24 percent. 25 to 31 percent is acceptable, and 32 percent and higher is too much. Step 2: Know the ranges for men Know the body fat ranges to shoot for if you're a man. For men, 2 to 4 percent is essential, athletes are 6 to 13 percent, fit men are 14 to 17 percent, and 18 to 25 percent is considered acceptable. 26 percent or more is considered excessive. Step 3: Avoid water and exercise Prepare for taking your measurements. Don't drinking too much water or exercise 2 hours before taking measurements as this can skew the body fat percentage scores. Step 4: Locate measurement sites Locate the sites for skin-fold measurements. For men, the sites are diagonally on the chest, and vertically on the abdominals and thighs. For women, the sites are vertically on the triceps and thighs, and diagonally on the suprailiac, which is midway between the hip joint and the rib cage. Step 5: Use a caliper Use a caliper to take skin-fold measurements. Pinch and pull a fold of skin using your index finger and thumb. Use the caliper to take a measurement one centimeter away. Wait a few seconds for the fat to compress. Take the measurements from your right side, and take two from each site. Tip Have a trained professional take skin-fold measurements to get the most accurate numbers. Step 6: Calculate your body density Add your skin-fold measurements, and enter the sum into the body density equation to calculate your body density. For women, the equation is .0000023 times the sum squared, minus your age multiplied by .0001392, minus .0009929 multiplied by the sum, plus 1.0994921. For men, the numbers are .0000016, .0002574, .0008267, and 1.1093800. Step 7: Determine body fat percentage Determine your body fat percentage by dividing 495 by your body density and subtracting 450. Tip To avoid number crunching, use an online calculator to determine your body density and fat percentage based on your skin-fold measurements. Step 8: Take a bioelectrical impedance analysis Take a bioelectrical impedance analysis using a fat-percentage scale if you want to bypass the math. The scale sends a low-voltage electrical current through your body to measure your fat percentage. Electricity goes faster through fat-free mass like muscles. Step 9: Understand the error rate Understand that the error rate for these methods can be as high as 8 percent, but your body fat percentage range will give you a good idea of your body makeup and what goals you should aim for. 12% Body Fat ≠ 6 Pack Abs MYTH | What Body Fat Percentage to see abs Examples how to get to 6% 8% 10
Wondering what body fat percentage you have to be at to see six pack abs? Today I show examples of how having a 6, 8, 10 or 12% body fat percentage does not guarantee visible ab definition. 🔥 FREE 6 Week Challenge: https://gravitychallenges.com/home65d4f?utm_source=ytube&utm_term=percentage Fat Loss Calculator: http://bit.ly/2O3rRNy This is a video that I wanted to do for a while because this 12% myth has spread all over the internet and now you have a bunch of people that might have never even been under 12% body fat claiming that you need to get under 12% to see your abs. The YouTube Community especially, seems to be convinced that 12% is the number to be at to see a six pack. I'm here today to tell you that this is completely untrue and it's a total myth. I'm not sure why or when 12% was picked as the definitive number to seeing a six pack, but I do know that associating six pack abs with a certain percentage of body fat is totally flawed. One reason why we can't say that a certain percentage is going to equal abs is because the way that your body distributes its body fat varies dramatically from person to person. One person can store most of their body fat in their thighs and hips while another person can store the majority of their body fat over their abdomen. I've personally trained thousands of people with all different body fat percentages. And a lot of my clients that were actually really lean still could not see their abs. In fact even my business partner dropped his body fat to 8 percent after dieting for 16 weeks and still could not see six pack abs. Meanwhile I've done bulking phases where I was eating an insane amount of calories and I was weighing in at like 230lbs, yet I could still see visible AB definition on top of my stomach that would be full of food. That's because I hold a lot of my fat in my lower body. My fat is mostly Stored in my hips love handles and upper thighs. Meanwhile his fat is predominately stored in his belly so even when he dropped down to 8% he still couldn't see his abs. And I know for a fact that I've had points where ive been well above 14% And still have had great ab definition. Again this all has to do with fat distribution and not with the number that you get from mostly inaccurate body fat devices. So that's actually another thing. Most body fat testing methods are totally flawed. Even the dexa scan which is supposed to be one of the most accurate ways to scan your body fat can be completely off and I've demonstrated this in another video. If you're using calipers, or formulas based on measurements, or bioelectrical impedance forget about it, there's so much room for error, you're going to be at least three to four percent off. Due to inaccurate measurements alone...you can't count on your body fat percentage to tell you when you're going to see those abs. The good news is that as long as you use the same body fat device the change over time should be pretty accurate. So if you're using for example a scale to determine your body fat, the initial reading probably will be inaccurate and so will the final reading but the change over time should be pretty accurate. However again this does not help you identify a definitive body fat percentage that will lead to visible abs. The last thing that this 12% body fat myth completely ignores is that to see your abs you have to build up the muscle...Abs....... are muscles. There's not just a magic six pack sitting under everyone's belly fat. Unfortunately that's not how it works. First of all everyone's abs are shaped differently due to different genetics. So one guy might burn away the belly fat from his abs and find very defined symmetrical six pack looking ab muscles while another guy might burn off the same fat but because his abs are shaped differently they're not going to look as defined and symmetrical. Like I said ABS are muscles. So if you have one guy that has worked his abs very well with Progressive resistance training workouts and you have another guy that does a couple crunches here and there the guy that worked on his abs with weights is going to have a lot more blocky visible abs than the other guy as long as his genetics arent horrible. Which is actually totally a real possibility. There are some people that don't work out at all and have ripped six packs only because of good muscle building genetics and a good distribution of body fat. Now you have to understand that this is the truth because for me as a trainer it does me no good to tell people that ABS aren't as easy to acquire for some as they are for others.

And most guys wonder? How do I know what kind of body fat percentage I'm on? Why do people like Conor McGregor test so low regarding body fat percentage but look way different than other people with similar body fat percentages? In this video I'll explain to you the three components influencing our percieved body fat percentage and our DEXA scan results. And most importantly how you can control them. Conor McGregor is on 7% Body Fat. Jamie Alberton on the other hand looks like a greek god and is on 10.8% body fat hmm how could this be? 1. We have to learn that there are multiple factors influencing our physical appearance and our percieved body fat level. One of those factors is: How much water we have in our body. What is stored between your muscles and your skin is next to subcutaneous fat, water. Generally if we're eating more carbs in our diet more water will also be stored in our body. Because every gram of glycon needs 3grams of water for storation. I do not recommend it, but if your goal is to look shredded to the bones, lowering your carbohydrates might be the right thing for you. I want to make this clear: Absolutely not healthy. A second factor influencing our appearance is vascularity: The more dominant your veins are, the less body fat it seems that you have. The thickness of your veins is influenced by your genetics. But also by the repetitive load that you put on them. If you train for 3years or longer you realize that you got new veins. This is not necessarily because you got bigger muscles, because training itself puts also strains on your veins. One thing that can also help is citrulline and theanine supplementation. Plus some cardiovascular training. Another factor is fat distribution. A german bodybuilder called Mischa Janiec has his fat heavily stored in his legs. This makes his sixpack visible even when he's on 15% body fat. Some people are lucky enough to store their fat in the thighs, while others have it in their bellys. While this factor again might be influenced by genetics, there's also some studies linking dietary fat intake with increased belly fat. Muscle Mass: The more muscle mass you have, the more shredded you will look even on higher body fat percentages. Look at Mike Thurston, a bodybuilder from the UK, while he's more than 15% body fat he looks like he's on 6%. One reason might be because he's packed with muscles and has been training for a couple years. 2. Another thing to realize is that the DEXA scan is also prone to errors. Even the DEXA scan, which is considered to be the most reliable body fat percentage calculator is not perfect. The mechanism behind the machine is amazing. It works like this: The machine first divides your body in two components: Total body bone mineral and total body soft tissue mass. The soft tissue mass is then divided again into fat mass and fat free mass by the ratio of soft tissue absorption. And voilà, you got your body fat percentage. While the mechanism of the DEXA machine is quite fool proof, errors can occur in the calibration of the machine. Also there are different brands of DEXA scans available. So we have to realize that the devices we use to compare our body fat percentages are not 100% reliable. The most reliable way to use a body fat test is probably then to compare your own body fat percentage over time, and not with others. 3. And another, very important reason why there's such a huge discrepancy in body fat is because people lie. Don't you agree that the lower the body fat percentage the higher the potential marketing effects? Don't you think that there would be financial interests in publishing low body fat results? Again, take such informations with a grain of salt. In fact, take everything you see on the internet with a grain of salt. Don't believe all the pick up advice, workout advice and business advice that you get. Because people lie. Don't let your happiness and motivation depend on such tests. In the end you have to focus on the variables that matter the most to you. Be it your health, your well-being or how you look in the mirror. No More “Love Handles” (NO BULLSH*T!)

They are also one of the most stubborn areas to drop body fat from. The good news is, you don’t have to be perfect right now to get this area to look better especially if you follow the strategies laid out in this video. First of all, regardless of where your body fat levels are now you must be truthful about the state of your nutrition. Are you really eating as well as you should or are you indulging in far too many sweets and drinks to ever get your body fat levels down to a level that is required to see the greatest muscle definition. As I mentioned earlier, the body fat storage here is very stubborn in men. You have to get pretty precise if you want to get an absolutely shredded waistline. That said, you don’t have to be perfect. To start, as you are getting yourself more committed to your nutrition improvement you can start working immediately on the status of your lat development. That’s right. Your lats. If you can completely develop your lats (from origin to insertion) then you will have a great weapon in your arsenal for creating an illusion of a greater differential between the width of your back and the width of your hips. In order to fully develop the lats you have to learn how to contract the lat fully. Most of us stop at the half way point of a contraction in an effort to try and hoist as much weight as possible. That is actually not just holding back the way your lats look but it’s making an already large waistline look even larger by comparison. If you could start getting your elbow back behind your body when doing your lat exercises you would start to develop a more impressive sweep in the area of the lats that is actually closest to the problem area love handles. Remember, the greater the differential here the smaller your waistline is going to look right away. Next, as you continue to work on getting your body fat levels down you want to be sure you are regularly working on your abs. Say you are at a ten or twelve percent body fat level at this point. It is here that you are a prime candidate to see the benefits of regular but short ab training and exercises. The upper abs should be clearly visible especially in the right light at this body fat level. This creates a midline distraction of the actual width of the love handles and gives you and whoever else is looking, something better to look at! Finally, with both the lat training and ab exercises locked in you want to do what others will tell you not to if you want to get rid of your love handles and that is, work your obliques! Believe me, do not listen to anyone that says to not work your obliques as it will thicken your waistline. The obliques, when developed, are going to be the muscle that creates the v taper in your waist that will always give you the impression of having a lean tapered torso. If you follow the fibers and train along the direction of the internal and external obliques, you are going to be able to see the maximum development of these muscles and get them looking their best. I give you two band versions of exercises you can do for your obliques that will help you get those love handles obliterated once and for all as that nutrition puts the final dagger in your single digit body fat.
