Download Java Source Code: http://www.luv2code.com/?p=992 In this video you will learn how to connect to MySQL with Java and NetBeans. Please subscribe to this channel :-) - https://www.youtube.com/user/luv2codetv?sub_confirmation=1 Video Transcript Time - 00:00 Hi, this is Chad (shod) with luv2code.com. In this video, you will learn how to connect to MySQL with Java and NetBeans. Time - 00:10 Let's go over the development process. The first thing we'll do is review the database tables, then we'll download and add MySQL database driver to NetBeans, then we'll actually create the Java code. Time - 00:25 Let's look at our database and see what data we have. We'll move to the MySQL workbench tool. See that we have a table called Employees and then we'll do a select star from that table and we'll see that we have three employees currently in our database. Time - 00:46 Now I'll create a simple NetBeans project. I'll go to the File menu, I'll select new Project. Make sure the Java application is selected and click next. For the project name, I'll give it jdbcdemo, I'll click Finish. Now what I'll do is I'll add a new Java Class. I'll select the project, I'll right click, I'll select New Java Class. For the name of the class I'll enter demo and hit finish. Now I have a basic Java Class ready to go. Time - 01:26 I will show you how to download the MySQL database driver and add it to your NetBeans project. First thing we have to do is visit the MySQL website at dev.mysql.com. On this page, we'll choose the dropdown and we'll select the platform independent. We'll choose the second entry here, the ZIP Archive and we'll click the download button. On the next page right near the bottom, we'll say no thanks, just start my download. Then we'll save it to our local system. Time - 02:07 Now let's move over to our Finder window on our file system and find the actual file that we just downloaded and I want to uncompressed it because right now it's a ZIP. I'll double click it, this will expand it or extract it. I'll look at it through list view. Now I have this new directory with the artifacts and there's a MySQL connector Java bin.jar, that's the actual JDBC driver that we'll use. Time - 02:35 Now we need to copy this file to the NetBeans project directory. I'll right click, I'll select copy then I'll switch over to NetBeans, I'll click the files tab and I'll select my project and I'll right click and I'll say paste. Even though the file is copied over, we still need to tell NetBeans that this a JAR library that we'll use on our project. What I'll do know is I'll click on the projects tab, I'll go to libraries and I'll choose add library and now I'll navigate to that NetBeans project directory where I actually have the file stored. Jbdcdemo and MySQL connector Java bin and I'll select choose. Then I'll expand this library's folder and we'll see that now this MySQL Java driver is part of this NetBeans project. Time - 03:37 Now let's start with the coding. The first thing I need to do is import Java to SQL package and then I'll drop in code for this main map it and then I'll walk through the code and show you how it works. This is our main map it, the main routine for the application. Then we have variables for the connection statement and result set. We also have the user id and password that we'll use. Time - 04:03 Then the first step is getting a connection to a database. We'll use the URL, the user id and the password. Then we go through and we create a statement object. Then we use this statement object to execute SQL query, select star from employees, then we'll process the result set and we'll simply print out the last name of the employee along with the first name. We have our accession handler and then we also clean up our resources at the end once we're done. Time - 04:42 Then to actually run the application, we will right click, select run file and at the bottom we have our output. We have our three employees that were listed in the database and our Java program was able to access it successfully. Great. Time - 04:59 Okay so this wraps up our video. You learned how to use NetBeans to connect to a MySQL database. Please subscribe to our channel to view more videos on Java, click thumbs up to like our video. Let me know what video you'd like for me to create for this Hibernate tutorial. --- Hibernate Tutorial Transcript In this video, we're going to test our JDBC connection. In the previous video, we did a lot of work with downloading JAR files. What I want to do hear is just do a very simple test to make sure that our JDBC connection works just fine. What we're going to do is create a very simple JDBC program, just to test everything out, just to make sure everything works out okay. What I would like to do, is move into this hibernate tutorial under the source. I'll create a new package. Right click, I'll say New Package. The actual name of the package, I'll call it com.luv2code.jdbc. Once you're happy with that package name, go ahead and click on finish. Now what I would like to do is actually create a new class. Again, right click on that package name. I'll say New Class. The actual name that I'll use for this class, I'll call it Testjdbc. Just very simple, and to the point. I'll also check the low item here for public static void, just so I can have a main method for this program. Then again, hit on Finish. All right, great. We have a very basic program here and let's go ahead and dig in. Let's start writing some code. I have a very simple try catch block. I have catch exception EXC. I'll do the EXC.print stack trace in case something goes wrong. Hopefully not. What I'll do is I'll just set up some variables here for my database connection information. First off, I'll set up my JDBC URL. I'll call it JDBC:mysequel:localhost3306/ I give the name of my database scheme, which is hbstudenttracker. Here I'll say use SSL=false. Just so that I don't get that pesky SSL warning that my sequel introduced recently, which is really annoying. Anyway, use SSL will make that go away. All right, so that's how JDBC URL, our user ID that we created, and we did all this stuff in previous slides here. Our user is HBStudent. We have this very secure system where our password is the same as our username. Only for training purposes, right? Okay, good. All right, so our URL, user ID, and password, great. We can use this information to actually give us a connection to a database. All right. Here, I'm just mentioning again that use SSL as equals false as to get rid of that pesky my sequel SSL warnings. All right, great. Let's go ahead and write some code here. I'm going to make use of my driver manager to get a connection. I'll also do some system out print lines here to tell myself what's going on here. All right, so I'll say system out print line, connecting to database. I'll just drop in that JDBC URL. Then I'll attempt to get a connection. Here I'll say connectionmycon=, and then I say driver manager.getconnection. I pass in my JDBC URL, my user ID, and my password. If that works out fine, then we have a successful connection. I can print a statement here saying connection successful. Yah-hoo. I like to have fun with this stuff. All right, so that's the piece there. Now, we need to fix some of our imports here. I can just click on this red X. We need to do that import on java.sql, so choose the second option here. Import Connection, and java.sql. Select that item. Yeah, that takes care of the item then. We should be good to go here. All right, so just some very basic code here to test out our database connection. Let's go ahead and run this application. I just do a right click, Run As, Java Application. Then it's going to fire up, and say connection successful. Let me expand this window here, so you can see everything. Connecting to database, connection successful. This is great. This is just a confirmation that we have the correct URL, user ID, and password. Also, more importantly, is that JDBC driver that we have on our lib directory, is associated with our class path. Know that we can get a valid connection. [Snip] for complete transcript, select More ... Transcript This is the end of the Hibernate tutorial transcript.

I'm always looking for new video ideas. Let me know what video you'd like for me to create. --- Video Transcript Time - 00:00 Hello. In this tutorial, you will learn how to connect to a MySQL database with Java. In this session we’re going to learn how to connect a MySQL database with Java. Before we get started there are some prep work that needs to take place. One is that you need to have a MySQL database already installed. If not, you can download one from the site listed here on the slide. Time - 00:20 Next, we’ll need to download and install a MySQL JDBC driver. This driver will allow the Java program to connect to the database. You can download it from this URL, and I’ll do that now. I’ll just take this URL, drop it into my favorite browser and here I am at the page. I’m on this page, this is for downloading the Connector/J browser. I’ll select the platform, platform independent. Now move down and I’ll select download and it will download a zip archive. Make sure you download the most recent version. In this case it’s 5.1.29. Make sure you download something at that version or later. Time - 01:04 Download, scroll down, select, “No thanks, just start my download.” This will start downloading the file for you. Now what we can do is show it in the finder. I’ll double click it to extract it. At this point I have the driver extracted. There’s a file in here called MySQL connector.jar that we’ll use later. Time - 01:34 Next, what I need to do is create a Java project in Eclipse. Let’s do that. On Eclipse I’ll say I’ll save file, new, Java project. This will be JDBC demo and I will select finish. What I’ll do is I will add a new class. New, class, this will be my driver and it will have a public static void main region. At this point we have a shell for our project created. Time - 02:28 Next, what we’ll do is we will talk to the actual development process and I really like this slide because it outlines exactly what we need to do. The first thing we’ll do is add the database driver to the classpath. Next, we’ll get a connection, we’ll submit a SQL query and then we’ll process the result set. Time - 02:48 Let’s start with step one, adding a MySQL database driver to the classpath. In our Eclipse project I’m going to add a new folder called lib, lib for library. In this lib folder I’m going to add the driver that I downloaded earlier. What I’ll do is I’ll just grab this driver. It’s the MySQL connector bin.jar and I’ll just drag and drop it to this lib folder. It will prompt me and I’ll say go ahead and copy the file. Time - 03:25 Next, I need to add the jar file, the driver to the classpath. I’ve set this up with properties, choose Java build path and then I’ll choose add jars. Expand this folder, that lib, I’ll grab that jar file and I’ll have it setup. Great. Time - 03:51 Now we can start coding. We need to get a connection, submit a SQL query and process a result set. Let me just sketch this out on a slide over here. The first thing I’ll do up top is I’ll just do an import on java.sql.* because all of the classes and interfaces that we need are in this package. Time - 04:17 I’ll also just setup a try catch block just to handle for any exception that may occur. Small typo there. Time - 04:40 Inside of this section I’m going to first get a connection to database. Then next I will create a statement. Then from here I will execute a SQL query and then I will process the result set. Time - 05:16 That’s my basic game plan, let’s fill it in with some real code. Here I’ll say connection, myConn = DriverManager.getConnection. I’ll give the jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/demo student, student. Student is the user ID and student is also the password. How to use UCanAccess JDBC Driver in a java program

07:21
Prior to JDK 1.8, you could have used a JDBC-ODBC Bridge to read an MS Access database (.mdb or accdb file), however this only would work in a Windows environment and you needed to be careful about 32-bit vs. 64-bit environment. UCanAccess is a Java package that is pure Java/JDBC UCanAccess-A Pure Java JDBC Driver for Access. UCanAccess works for all OS as it is a java package. It should allow you to work with an MS Access database (collection of tables, etc.) directly from Java without need for the ODBC bridge. download link for UCanAccess package - https://sourceforge.net/projects/ucanaccess/

R tutorial: connecting to a database

03:38
Learn more about connecting to databases with R: https://www.datacamp.com/courses/importing-data-in-r-part-2 Welcome to part two of importing data in R! The previous course dealt with accessing data stored in flat files or excel files. In a professional setting, you'll also encounter data stored in relational databases. In this video, I'll briefly talk about what a relational database is and then I'll explain how you can connect to it. In the next video, I'll explain how you can import data from it! So, what's a relational database? There's no better way to show this than with an example. Take this database, called company. It contains three tables, employees, products and sales. Like a flat file, information is displayed in a table format. The employees table has 5 records and three fields, namely id, name and started_at. The id here serves as a unique key for each row or record. Next, the products table contains the details on four products. We're dealing with data from a telecom company that's selling both with and without a contract. Also here, each product has an identifier. Finally, there's the sales table. It lists what products were sold by who, when and for what price. Notice here that the ids in employee_id and product_id correspond to the ids that you can find in the employees and products table respectively. The third sale for example, was done by the employee with id 6, so Julie. She sold the product with id 9, so the Biz Unlimited contract. These relations make this database very powerful. You only store all necessary information once in nicely separated tables, but can connect the dots between different records to model what's happening. How the data in a relational database is stored and shuffled around when you make adaptations, depends on the so-called database management system, or DBMS you're using. Open-source implementations such as MySQL, postgreSQL and SQLite are very popular, but there are also proprietary implementations such as Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL server. Practically all of these implementations use SQL, or sequel, as the language for querying and maintaining the database. SQL stands for Structured Query Language. Depending on the type of database you want to connect to, you'll have to use different packages. Suppose the company database I introduced before is a MySQL database. This means you'll need the RMySQL package. For postgreSQL you'll need RpostgreSQL, for Oracle, you'll use ROracle and so on. How you interact with the database, so which R functions you use to access and manipulate the database, is specified in another R package called DBI. In more technical terms, DBI is an interface, and RMySQL is the implementation. Let's install the RMySQL package, which automatically installs the DBI package as well. Loading only the DBI package will be enough to get started. The first step is creating a connection to the remote MySQL database. You do this with dbConnect(), as follows. The first argument specifies the driver that you will use to connect to the MySQL database. It sure looks a bit strange, but the MySQL() function from the RMySQL package simply constructs a driver for us that dbConnect can use. Next, you have to specify the database name, where the database is hosted, through which port you want to connect, and finally the credentials to authenticate yourself. This is an actual database that we're hosting, so you can try these commands yourself! The result of the dbConnect call, con, is a DBI connection object. You'll need to pass this object to whatever function you're using to interact with the database. Before we do that, let's get familiar with this connection object in the exercises!

Lesson - 27 : JDBC - Connection pooling in JDBC

15:55
Why DataSource interface is introduced If a java program wants to obtain a connection with a database then there are two options for the java program 1. A java program can use DriverManager class of java.sql package to obtain a connection. 2. A java program can use DataSource interface of java.sql package to obtain a connection with a database. The following are the major drawbacks of DriverManager class 1. DriverManager class takes atleast three or four seconds of time to open database connection in a network so it decreases the burden on or performance of java application. 2. To obtain a connection using DriverManager a programmer has to remember driver class name it's url and username, password so it increase the burden on a programmer. 3. DriverManager class opens a separate connection for each client so number of connections on database server will be increased so it's performance is decrease. 4. DriverManager opens non reusable connections with a database so it increase burden on database server. Why connection pooling: When we use driver manager or datasource the connection opened with a datasource is a non reusable. For each client if a new connection is opened then burden on database server will be increase so to reduce the burden on database server we use connection pooling. What is connection pooling: Connection pooling is a mechanism which makes a database connection as a reusable for more than one client so burden on a database server will be reduced. A connection pooling makes database connections as reusable. A connection pool contains set of pooled connections(reusable connections). How connection pooling works: 1. A server administrator prepares a connection pool with a setoff connections and also a mediator object as DataSource object to access the pool. 2. An administrator stores DataSource object into JNDI registry (java naming directory interface) . 3. A java application reads DataSource object from JNDI registry andasks for a connection from a pool. 4. A DataSource object takes a connection from a pool and creates a proxy or logical connection do it and then sends the proxy connection to java program. 5. When a java program closes proxy connection the DataSource will done real connection back to the pool.

How to work with a `.jar` file in your local maven setup : Add, Install, Use dependency

08:57
Sometimes you want to work with a jar file that isn't hosted in maven central. It might be a 3rd party jar, it might be one that you have written. I explain the following options: - add .jar files as an IntelliJ project dependency - install it locally to your .m2 repository - add it to your project as a system scoped file - use a repository management tool like Nexus or Archiva - publish the dependency to maven central You can find all the links mentioned, and a write up, on this blog post http://blog.javafortesters.com/2017/10/maven-local-dependencies.html ************* ► Subscribe to My Channel For more videos like this http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=EvilTesterVideos ************* ►► Contact Details: Read my writing and blogs at: ✓ http://www.eviltester.com ✓ http://www.seleniumsimplified.com ✓ http://www.javafortesters.com ✓ http://www.compendiumdev.co.uk Follow me on social media: ★ https://uk.linkedin.com/in/eviltester ★ https://twitter.com/eviltester - @eviltester ★ https://www.instagram.com/eviltester/ ★ https://uk.pinterest.com/eviltester/ ★ https://www.facebook.com/eviltester ************* ►► Read my books http://compendiumdev.co.uk/page/books ★ "Dear Evil Tester" - explore the tester's mind ★ "Java For Testers" - learn to code in Java ★ "Automating and Testing a REST API - a case study" ************* ►►Learn skills from my online training courses http://www.compendiumdev.co.uk/page/online_training ★ Selenium WebDriver With Java ★ Technical Web Testing 101 ★ Evil Tester Talks Technical Testing ★ Case Study: Java Desktop Application Technical Training *************
