8 GREAT TIPS FOR SURVIVAL AT SEA

06:11
Most of us adore beach resorts and go to one of the large saltwater bodies at least once a year. However, we shouldn’t forget that the sea is as attractive as it is wayward. We at Bright Side wondered how a person who happened to be in the open sea should behave. It turns out there are several rules that aren’t at all difficult to remember. Despair is your most dangerous enemy. Don’t give up hope of being saved. There are many stories of people who were found in the open sea months after their disappearance. For instance, 25-year-old sailor Poon Lim, who worked on a British merchant ship, survived alone 133 days in the open sea. After a shipwreck, he managed to find a raft with fresh water, cookies, flares, and a flashlight. Every day, Lim ate only 2 cookies and made 3 sips of water. To avoid muscle atrophy, he even floated around the raft twice a day. As you can see, human possibilities are endless. The main thing is to keep calm and hope for the best. TIMESTAMPS Calm down 0:35 Choose the right swimming style 0:57 Find something that floats 1:37 Take care of clothes 1:55 Decide what you’ll eat 2:16 Provide yourself with liquid 3:01 Save yourself properly 4:02 Don’t lose hope 5:06 SUMMARY - Panic definitely won’t help you. It can cloud your judgment and make you lose the rhythm of breathing. Therefore, the first thing you should do is to calm down. - The style of swimming you choose determines how long your strength will last. In calm water, it’s better to swim on your back. If waves splash around you, it’s better to swim on your belly. - If you’re in the open sea as a result of a shipwreck or an airplane water landing, there must be plenty of things around you that perfectly keep afloat. It will be even better if it’s a boat or a raft with which ships are equipped. - Remember that open sunlight can be extremely dangerous. So don’t remove your clothes — they’ll protect you from the sun. - If you have rations, divide them into small daily portions. This will make them last for a long time, and you won’t have problems with digestion. - Try to fish even if you have stores of food. After all, fish contain some liquid. - You have to consume the liquid constantly but never drink seawater. - Try to ensure that you always have a couple of empty containers left for collecting rainwater. According to studies, drinking untreated rainwater is safe for your health. - • If you found fluorescein, dissolve it in the water when you see an airplane or ship. It forms a bright spot around you which can be easily seen from the air and from afar. 5 AMAZING Ship Launch Videos

03:19
Ship launching is the process of transferring a vessel to the water. It is a naval tradition in many cultures, dating back thousands of years. It has been observed as a public celebration and a solemn blessing. Ship launching imposes stresses on the ship not met during normal operation, in addition to the size and weight of the vessel, and it represents a considerable engineering challenge as well as a public spectacle. The process also involves many traditions intended to invite good luck, such as christening by breaking a sacrificial bottle of champagne over the bow as the ship is named aloud and launched. There are three principal methods of conveying a new ship from building site to water, only two of which are called "launching." The oldest, most familiar, and most widely used is the end-on launch, in which the vessel slides down an inclined slipway, usually stern first. With the side launch, the ship enters the water broadside. The third method is float-out, used for ships that are built in basins or dry docks and then floated by admitting water into the dock. In all cases, heavy chains are attached to the ship and the drag effect is used to slow the vessel once afloat, until tugboats can move the hull to a jetty for fitting out. Lyrics to Swallowed in the Sea - Coldplay

03:56
Lyrics to Swallowed in the Sea by Coldplay. Lyrics: You cut me down a tree And brought it back to me And that's what made me see Where I was going wrong You put me on a shelf And kept me for yourself I can only blame myself You can only blame me And I could write a song A hundred miles long Well, that's where I belong And you belong with me And I could write it down Or spread it all around Get lost and then get found Or swallowed in the sea You put me on a line And hung me out to dry And darling that's when I Decided to go to see you You cut me down to size And opened up my eyes Made me realize What I could not see And I could write a book The one they'll say that shook The world, and then it took It took it back from me And I could write it down Or spread it all around Get lost and then get found And you'll come back to me Not swallowed in the sea Ooh... And I could write a song A hundred miles long Well, that's where I belong And you belong with me The streets you're walking on A thousand houses long Well, that's where I belong And you belong with me Oh what good is it to live With nothing left to give Forget but not forgive Not loving all you see Oh the streets you're walking on A thousand houses long Well that's where I belong And you belong with me Not swallowed in the sea You belong with me Not swallowed in the sea Yeah, you belong with me Not swallowed in the sea

10 Sea Monsters ATTACKING A Boat!

12:07
Check out these 10 sea monsters attacking a boat! This top 10 list of ocean creatures like whales and great white sharks attacking a ship shows some bizarre stories caught on camera! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "MYSTERIOUS Creatures Living At The BOTTOM Of The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/Efhjc-Gu508 Watch our "SECRETS Casinos DON'T Want You To Find Out!" video here: https://youtu.be/hAoABuvzOZM Watch our "RAREST And Most EXPENSIVE Cars In The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/MtCnWSqqilg 10. Great White Shark If you’ve been on a boat out on the ocean, a Jaws attack has probably crossed your mind. Even if it’s just barely!! Then of course you rationalize that the chances of that happening are practically 0. Practically. That’s what Terry Selwood, a 73-year-old Australian fisherman learned in 2017, when a great white shark leapt out of the water, into his boat!! 9. An Eagle Ray Rays seem like beautiful, serene creatures - but they can be extremely dangerous, even if you’re on the relative safety of a large tourist boat. In 2011, Jenny Hausch had rented a 26-foot catamaran for her family to take a trip in Florida. Sounds really nice right? 8. Swordfish In 2017, Alan Pope, a British tourist, was on a boat trip getting ready to go snorkeling in Indonesia when everything went horribly wrong. Without any warning, a swordfish jumped out of the water and into the boat, and impaled his neck with its bill. The end snapped off, and left six inches of the sword still jabbed inside his neck, just millimeters from instantly killing him. 7. Sperm Whales The Gulf of Alaska is a prime fishing location, especially for those trying to catch black cod. In these waters, though, there is a much larger creature that also likes eating the fish- sperm whales. They are the ocean’s largest toothed predators, and while they are quite capable of catching food for themselves, they much prefer taking the easy route. 6. Giant Squid Mostly creatures of legend, giant squids are mentioned in many old mariners tales of dangers at sea. But they are rarely seen, let alone involved in attacking boats. So when a team of French sailors came face to face with one in 2003, they almost didn’t believe it!! 5. Bull Shark You might think that a great white shark would be the most problematic shark species to boats, but there’s another type that can be more aggressive, and more likely to risk an encounter. 4. Jellyfish Sometimes it’s the smallest things that can have the biggest effect, something that became ever so apparent in 2017 when Chinese scientists were investigating why their aircraft carriers were experiencing difficulties. They found that large swarms of Jellyfish were getting caught up in the propulsion systems! This would stop the ships dead in their tracks, or cause the engines to overheat and cause extreme damage. 3. Mako Shark This next story took place just last year, 2017 in Long Island, New York. A fishing charter boat was taking guests to the location where they find the widest variety of fish, when suddenly a Mako shark jumped onto the side of the boat. Unfortunately for the fish, it managed to get itself stuck in the handrail of the boat and, despite thrashing about, it couldn’t free itself. 2. Black Marlin Game fishing is a popular pastime for many enthusiasts, but when you’re chasing after some of the largest and most powerful marine creatures on earth, you have to be ready for the unpredictable. Again last year, things went very wrong indeed for a fishing boat off the coast of Panama. They had caught a black marlin, a species that can weight up to 1500 pounds and reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. 1. Killer Whale If you’ve ever watched a nature documentary that’s featured Killer Whales, you’ll be all too familiar how organised and clever they can be. Pods work together to catch prey, and even tilt ice flows to trap seals. When they turn these skills towards human activity, the results can be frightening. This Man Was Lost At Sea For A Year. What Two Fishermen Found Inside His Yacht Will Terrify You

04:50
Drifting out at sea with a broken sail, the yacht painted a desolate picture. But as the two fishermen approached the stricken vessel, they could never have guessed at the nightmare that lurked within. Peering into the cabin of the boat, the two men were greeted with a scene straight out of a horror movie. They had finally discovered the incredible fate of a German sailor lost at sea. Fifty-nine-year-old Manfred Fritz Bajorat loved adventure. Born in the Ruhr region of Germany, he hated the cold winters of his native country. So, instead, he traveled the world aboard his 40-foot yacht, Sayo, in search of warmer weather. ►For more articles visit: http://scribol.com ►For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] ********************** ►Support our channel PATREON: https://goo.gl/HJbzyf Thanks To Our Patreons Salami L. Sea Urchins Pull Themselves Inside Out to be Reborn | Deep Look

Conceived in the open sea, tiny spaceship-shaped sea urchin larvae search the vast ocean to find a home. After this incredible odyssey, they undergo one of the most remarkable transformations in nature. SUBSCRIBE to Deep Look! http://goo.gl/8NwXqt DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small. * NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER TUESDAY! * Every summer, millions of people head to the coast to soak up the sun and play in the waves. But they aren’t alone. Just beyond the crashing surf, hundreds of millions of tiny sea urchin larvae are also floating around, preparing for one of the most dramatic transformations in the animal kingdom. Scientists along the Pacific coast are investigating how these microscopic ocean drifters, which look like tiny spaceships, find their way back home to the shoreline, where they attach themselves, grow into spiny creatures and live out a slow-moving life that often exceeds 100 years.“These sorts of studies are absolutely crucial if we want to not only maintain healthy fisheries but indeed a healthy ocean,” says Jason Hodin, a research scientist at the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories. http://staff.washington.edu/hodin/ http://depts.washington.edu/fhl/ Sea urchins reproduce by sending clouds of eggs and sperm into the water. Millions of larvae are formed, but only a handful make it back to the shoreline to grow into adults. --- What are sea urchins? Sea urchins are spiny invertebrate animals. Adult sea urchins are globe-shaped and show five-point radial symmetry. They move using a system of tube feet. Sea urchins belong to the phylum Echinodermata along with their relatives the sea stars (starfish), sand dollars and sea slugs. --- What do sea urchins eat? Sea urchins eat algae and can reduce kelp forests to barrens if their numbers grow too high. A sea urchin’s mouth, referred to as Aristotle’s lantern, is on the underside and has five sharp teeth. The urchin uses the tube feet to move the food to its mouth. --- How do sea urchins reproduce? Male sea urchins release clouds of sperm and females release huge numbers of eggs directly into the ocean water. The gametes meet and the sperm fertilize the eggs. The fertilized eggs grow into free-swimming embryos which themselves develop into larvae called plutei. The plutei swim through the ocean as plankton until they drop to the seafloor and metamorphosize into the globe-shaped adult urchins. ---+ Read the entire article on KQED Science: https://ww2.kqed.org/science/2016/08/23/sea-urchins-pull-themselves-inside-out-to-be-reborn/ ---+ For more information: Marine Larvae Video Resource http://marinedevelopmentresource.stanford.edu/ ---+ More Great Deep Look episodes: From Drifter to Dynamo: The Story of Plankton | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUvJ5ANH86I Pygmy Seahorses: Masters of Camouflage | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3CtGoqz3ww The Fantastic Fur of Sea Otters | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zxqg_um1TXI ---+ See some great videos and documentaries from PBS Digital Studios! A suspect found himself in hot water as he allegedly tried to elude officers by running into the sea in North Carolina following a traffic stop. Unfortunately for suspect Zachary Kingsbury, a five-foot shark also appeared to be following him. Police deployed a drone, which they say followed Kingsbury an impressive 4,000 feet off shore. Cops in Surf City say they had pulled over Kingsbury, 20, Thursday afternoon when an officer allegedly spotted something suspicious in his car.

Most MYSTERIOUS Ocean Facts!

11:50
Check out these top unexplained mysteries of the deep ocean. From strange sounds captured in the deep sea by hydrophones such as the bloop, the train, and julia, to gigantic whirlpools, biggest underwater falls and the milky bioluminescent sea phenomenon. Are deep sea monsters living deep in the ocean? Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "12 Historical Treasures In The Middle East DESTROYED!" video here: https://youtu.be/Nt9mWUpTp1U Watch our "Most HAUNTED Places In The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/h9elrDhft9w Watch our "Most DANGEROUS Religious Cults Ever!" video here: https://youtu.be/VTD1qabI3v0 9. Underwater Falls Voted one of the most beautiful places on Earth, Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean. On the Southwestern tip of the island you will find a fascinating illusion. When viewed from above, a runoff of sand and silt deposits creates the impression of an ‘underwater waterfall’. But did you know there are actually real underwater waterfalls? Seven waterfalls have been discovered deep underwater. The tallest waterfall on Earth is not Angel Falls, but an underwater waterfall called Denmark Strait Cataract located in the Atlantic ocean between Greenland and Iceland. It is the world's highest underwater waterfall, with water falling almost 11,500 feet and carries 175 million cubic feet of water per second. It is caused due to temperature differences in the water on either side of the strait. Cold water is denser than warm water. And the eastern side of the strait is a lot colder than the western side. So when the waters meet, the cold water sinks below the warmer water, creating a strong downward flow, which is considered a waterfall. And it's not just waterfalls that are under the ocean. There are huge secret rivers, complete with rapids and islands that flow down the sea shelves out into the desert plains creating river banks and flood plains. Here's a picture of the river Cenote Angelita under the sea of Mexico. These salty rivers carry sediments and minerals and could be vital in sustaining life. The world's sixth largest river, by volume, is below the Black Sea. It is 350 times larger than the Thames and 150 feet deep in places. 8. Milky Sea Phenomenon For over 400 years, sailors told tales of a mysterious event that takes place far out in the Indian Ocean. They would come across miles and miles of milky glowing waters, sometimes stretching as far as the eye could see. In 2005, a group of scientists led by Dr. Steven Miller of the Naval Research Laboratory in Monterey, Calif., decided to take a closer look at this story to see if it was true. They managed to register about 235 observations and get a satellite image that showed an area of low lighting in the Indian Ocean about the size of Connecticut. Their samples that they collected indicated the presence of a type of bioluminescent bacteria in the water, known as Vibrio harveyi. This isn't the same kind of bacteria that you might see in waves that use their bright light to ward off predators. This bioluminescent bacteria may actually use light to attract fish, since its favorite place to live is inside a fish's gut. Scientists' guess is that since they only emit a very faint light on their own, they have to gather together to make an impact. Their collective glow can grow to massive, milky sea proportions when their numbers swell to a huge amount -- think 40 billion trillion. They may also congregate to colonize algae. Sounds like a party! It is still only a guess since Dr. Miller and his colleagues haven't determined exactly what causes the bacteria to gather. 7. Unexplained sounds Of course dark, creepy fog can make you jump at anything that goes bump in the night. But what about things that go "bloop" in the sea? With names like "The Bloop," "Train" and "Julia," the sounds have been captured by hydrophones, or underwater microphones, monitored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The decidedly nonspooky nicknames for these sounds do little to dispel the mystery surrounding them. In 1997, NOAA hydrophones 3,000 miles apart picked up one of the loudest sounds ever recorded off the southern coast of South America: the Bloop (which sounds exactly like its name, a bloop). The Bloop mimics marine animal sounds in some ways, but if it were some kind of sea creature it would have to be almost the size of the Eiffel tower for that sound to be heard from 3,000 miles away. So what made the sound? It's anyone's guess but deep-sea monsters aside, NOAA holds the most likely explanation for The Bloop is that it was the sound of a large iceberg fracturing. Sure.... Another weird noise known as Julia sounds almost like someone whining or maybe even singing under water. The eastern equatorial Pacific autonomous array (the fancy name for the network of hydrophones) picked up this strange sound that lasted 15 seconds in 1999.

Ocean Kayak Fishing Isn't Fun Anymore..

Mild profanity in this vid.. apologies 17:53 is really the beginning of the part you want to see, but this whole video has some decent content if you watch the whole thing but yea go ahead and click to the end and watch me flail through the waves. Do yourself a favor and watch this vid from a couple days later... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SXq4vEWsms Gopro: hero 3+ silver http://amzn.to/2iy8PyO Rod: Pompano Bay 7' Custom (http://www.pompanobayrods.com) Reel: Penn Clash 4k http://amzn.to/2hs2Gbr Fishfinder: http://amzn.to/2iwROJk Kayak: Hobie Revo 13.. kinda like this: http://amzn.to/2i8N5uk Magictail Tog jigs for the tog.. custom poured in NJ https://www.facebook.com/MagicTail-Bucktails-366916750153943/?fref=ts Video is a couple weeks old.... got to the beach with kayak in tow right after sunrise, drove around looking for 50lb stripers leaping out of the water but instead saw a whole lot of nothing.. drove around with Tenzin for a little while searching for any sign of life worth launching the kayaks for... found the fleet and I scouted it out from the beach.. It didnt look to promising.. Romo and Mike arrived.. we got out into the ocean a little before 9am... penetrated the fleet and found they were working a huge school of peanut bunker with very few fish on them, didn't see anyone hook up or any bait spraying, a couple hours passed, the fleet disappeared, started finding little pieces of life here and there, Romo got a nice Bluefish, there were some 24"-30" Bass working some peanuts in tight... it was basically dead all over out there and the only life we found was tight to the beach. Decided to try to find some structure and tog fish mid afternoon... caught a short.. then lost a drag puller (which I didn't have on video), before seeing the birds come back to life. Chased birds for the last hour of the day, they would pop up here and there and move quickly but I caught several bass and a bluefish on topwater before the day was over. Luckily the Bluefish I caught was able to destroy my waders while I was unhooking it. I missed a lot of blowups out there, the fish were doing their typical "hit the lure a bunch of times before actually eating it" but by days end I caught enough fish that I was semi satisfied... until it was time to go in. The waves/swell on this day were a little dicey and thanks to my poor timing I caught a nice wave which flipped my kayak, and lost just about all of my tackle. From the beginning of this day, after seeing dead water everywhere and then seeing the one fleet.. I wanted to bail on the striper persuit and drive another hour to try to get on some big tog, but I went against my better judgement and paddled the many miles and took a ton of casts all for some short bass and an average bluefish, destroyed my waders, and flipped my kayak.. but in the end, it was a beautiful november day with my friends on the water, even tho the fishing was tough it was still fun and I have no intentions to stop the ocean kayaking Luckily the beach bite lit up in the days preceding this which you saw in my last video.. I have a few days of footage to sift through but those videos will be coming up shortly. After editing the epic underwater blitz video I have been facing some serious lack of motivation to go through all these vids and put together less epic vids than that last one.. This here video took me a few days to piece together.. some kind of writers block.. editors block? Hopefully you enjoyed watching at least parts of this slow day of fishing and can laugh at my misfortune as I roll through the surf.. This was my first time "turtling" as they call it, and I should really be better prepared for this, every time, with leashes for all my rods and waterproof containers, but if you havent noticed by now, I am lazy and irresponsible and always put forth the minimum effort into maintaining my gear and well being... I dont think that will ever change. Luckily that box of plugs didnt have too many good lures in it... Romo also got some footage of me flipping which you can see on his channel here - https://www.youtube.com/user/romo7493 Rod: Pompano Bay 7' 3/8th-3/4oz x fast custom Kayak: Hobie Revo 13 Lures used: Tsunami talkin popper 7" all day. 4 Tips on How to Stay Safe at Sea

11:31
How to Stay Safe at Sea Summer is a great time to enjoy the sun and the seaside, but both the beach and the sea can be full of dangers. To stay safe and protect your family you have know how to deal with all kinds of unexpected situations that can happen in the water. So grab a pen and paper and get ready to take note of these general safety rules when it comes to resting at the seaside. Don’t forget to pack all the beach necessities 0:55 You absolutely need to pack a first aid kit with medications for a variety of emergencies, prescriptions and devices like inhalers or EpiPens, sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, coolers with ice, plenty of bottled water, drinks and food. What to do if you’ve spotted a shark 1:44 Statistically, you have more chances of drowning somewhere near the beach or even being struck by lightning than becoming a victim of a shark attack. Still, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Be careful what you wear: sharks can negatively react to bright colors or shiny things. If you've spotted a shark, stay calm and concentrate on getting away and out of the water. Check for signs of aggression indicating that the animal is about to attack. If an attack seems inevitable, take a defensive position. Try to put a solid object between you and the animal. If there’s nothing at hand, the best way to scare a shark away is to scratch at its eyes or gills. How to avoid a jellyfish sting 6:02 Choose an area where you can swim safely. If you know that there are jellyfish around, avoid that place. If you’ve been stung by a jellyfish, get out of the water and stay calm. Don't touch or scratch the place of the sting because there might still be some tentacles attached to your skin. Pour some sea water over the affected area and leave it, don’t dry it off with a towel or anything. Then, pour a generous amount of vinegar over the tentacles in your skin and let it sit for at least half a minute. To relieve the pain, submerge the injured part of your body in warm water (about 110°F). What to do if you've stepped on a sea urchin 8:36 Make sure you’re not feeling any chest pain, nausea, or difficulty breathing. If you are, call emergency services. And if not, start by removing all the spines. Use tweezers to pull them out, especially if the ends of the spines are protruding. If they’re not, you can use hot wax. Once you’re sure that there are no spines left in your body, clean the wound with soap and water. What to do if you’ve been pulled into a rip current 9:50 Before going into the water, check for any suspicious-looking channels. Places with rip currents can be foamier or, on the contrary, quieter than others. If you've still got caught by the current, stay calm, it won't pull you underwater. If you start swimming parallel to the shore, you’ll manage to escape its pull. Music: Better_Than_It_Used_To_Be https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Beach necessities 0:55 What to do if you’ve spotted a shark 1:44 How to avoid a jellyfish sting 6:02 What to do if you've stepped on a sea urchin 8:36 What to do if you’ve been pulled into a rip current 9:50 SUMMARY -You absolutely need to pack a first aid kit with medications for a variety of emergencies, prescriptions and devices like inhalers or EpiPens, sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, coolers with ice, plenty of bottled water, drinks and food. -Never go into the water if there’s a posted warning on the beach. Don’t swim at night or at dawn or dusk. In the extremely rare instance of a prolonged deadly encounter, try to put a solid object between you and the animal (for example, a diving mask or surfboard). Don't stop fighting, this way the shark will get the message that you’re not worth all the trouble. -Pay attention to warning signs and watch for purple flags. That's the international sign that you’ll most likely encounter jellyfish in the water. If you see a jellyfish that’s washed ashore, don't touch it. -Start by removing all the spines. Use tweezers to pull them out, especially if the ends of the spines are protruding. If they’re not, you can use hot wax. Put it on the affected area, wait for it to dry, and pull it off; it’ll take the spines with it. -If you enter the water and feel a strong pull, get out immediately. As soon as the water gets up to your chest, it’ll be practically impossible to break free. If you've still got caught by the current, stay calm, it won't pull you underwater. Helping baby sea turtles into the ocean

04:33
http://www.tigresalvaje.com Helping the baby turtles swim out into the ocean was awesome. I got some amazing underwater shots with my Drift Stealth helmet camera in the waterproof enclosure, but didn't get as much underwater shots as I would have liked. I was so excited about what was happening around me that I was forgetting how to make a video. So there is some shaky footage, and maybe not as much as you would like to see of the turtles swimming, but I tried. Making these Tigre Salvaje videos has been a great experience. I really feel like these are some of the most important videos I have ever made. I know people have been donating, and offering their services to do things like build Dave a new website. It sound cliche but I really do have the best fans in the world. Dave is out there all alone, and in a situation like that it is easy to get discouraged. If you have the budget and the time visiting Tigre Salvaje would be a great experience. If you can send a small donation via paypal that would help out immensely http://www.tigresalvaje.com/donate.htm If you can't send any coin I'm sure Dave would appreciate an email saying thanks for what he is doing. Feel free to drop him a line and give a digital pat on the back. I know it would make him smile. [email protected] Song: Eternal Hope Artist: Kevin MacLeod www.incompetech.com

Sea Turtle with Straw up its Nostril - "NO" TO PLASTIC STRAWS

08:07
This is the original video! Filmed by Christine Figgener, marine biologist at Texas A&M University. ***WARNING: Graphic Content & Inappropiate/ Strong Language!*** This video shows graphically why plastic waste is detrimental to marine life, especially single-use plastics (such as straws, which are one of the most redundant items). This turtle suffers from an item that is human-made and used by most of us frequently. The research team around Christine Figgener (Texas A&M University) found a male Olive Ridley sea turtle during an in-water research trip in Costa Rica. He had a 10-12 cm PLASTIC STRAW lodged in his nostril and they removed it. SAY "NO" TO PLASTIC STRAWS, AND ANY KIND OF ONE-TIME USE PLASTIC ITEMS! If you would like to support our research and conservation efforts in Costa Rica, please think about donating to our GoFundMe Campaign http://gofundme.com/wuhvd6zj UPDATES The Plastic Pollution Coalition just launched their "No Straw" Campaign in collaboration with us. Take the No-Straw-Pledge and learn more: http://www.plasticpollutioncoalition.... ----- The Story behind the viral video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLN52... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MPHb... OUR STORY: My research team found a male Olive Ridley sea turtle during an in-water research trip in Costa Rica. He had a 10-12 cm PLASTIC STRAW lodged in his nostril. After initially thinking that we are looking at a parasitic worm, and trying to remove it to identify it, we cut a small piece off to investigate further and finally identified what we were REALLY looking at. After a short debate about what we should do we removed it with the plier of a swiss army knife which was the only tool available on our small boat (not intended for overnight stays), since we were on the ocean, in a developing country, a few hours away from the coast and several hours away from any vet (probably days from any vet specialised in reptiles, not to mention sea turtles) and x-ray machines. Plus, we would have incurred a penalty (up to time in jail) on ourselves by removing the turtle since that is beyond our research permits. He did very obviously not enjoy the procedure very much, but we hope that he is now able to breath more freely. The blood from the shoulder is from a 6mm skin biopsy we took previously to this event for a genetic study (part of our permitted research), which usually doesn't bleed much, but which started bleeding while restraining the turtle. We disinfected the air passageway with iodine and kept the turtle for observation before releasing him back into the wild. The bleeding stopped pretty much immediately after the removal of the straw, and when we released him, he swam happily away. The turtle very likely swallowed the straw while ingesting other food items and then either expelled the straw together with the redundant sea water through her nostrils, or regurgitated the straw and it ended up in the wrong passageway. The nasal cavity of sea turtles is connected directly to the palate (roof of the mouth) by a long nasopharyngeal duct. CAUSE: A Business Strategy for Standing Out in a Sea of Sameness

01:40
This book challenges you to invite employees & customers into a movement by defining your business as a CAUSE. Visit http://freibergs.com, Speaker and Bestselling business authors, for more on defining your business as a CAUSE Right now, if you can’t demonstrate that you are legitimately doing something to make the world better your business is in trouble. What motivates people to bring their best to work? An invitation to change the world, a cause worth fighting for. When people find something noble and heroic to be part of, their lives and work take on greater meaning and significance. They become more willing to think like owners of the business and more committed to the growth of the enterprise. World-class people gravitate to companies where they know they can have an impact, make a difference and make their corner of the world better. Yet, the research shows that the global workforce is still disengaged. Too many employees have become Dead People Working.™ A critical part of the employee engagement equation has been missing. Companies spend too much time focused on HOW and not the WHY. “How do we equip our people to do a job? How do we develop our people to be leaders and innovators? How do we get them to be accountable and change?” Maybe we should be asking: Have we given them anything worth changing for? CAUSE will show you how to give people something worth changing for. What motivates customers to become brand enthusiasts? An opportunity to buy products and services that change the world. To a large degree, our purchases are a statement about who we are, what we believe and the causes that define us. People don’t buy products and services; they buy better versions of themselves. When we buy things that enrich lives from companies that are doing good, we look in the mirror and see a better version of ourselves. This is what the “buy one give one” movement is about. A better version of me feels, well…better!
