SQL Tutorial 7: CONCAT function, ORDER BY, NULL value

09:21
How do you concatenate or combine columns and place it on a derived column? How do you check if a column contains NULL value? How do your arrange rows or records in descending or ascending order? The video presents sample problems with solution as you work with a SELECT statement. CONCAT () function combines data among columns. It is not limited with two columns but may work with multiple columns as you combine it with another CONCAT function. Use two double-pipe symbols (||) instead if you opt not to use CONCAT function. Not all columns are filled up or has values on it in a given table. When a column contains no data even a single space, it has a NULL value. In using DB2 command line, a NULL column is represented by a single dash. When generating a SELECT statement output it has no general sorting order on its result. To specify the correct sorting order, use ORDER BY clause after FROM. Ascending is the default order when sorting a particular column. If you want to sort in descending order, use DESC. Sort order is not limited with one column. You may combine with multiple columns by specifying which column to sort first followed by the next column order to sort. CONCAT, ORDER BY, and NULL are universal in all dbms SQL products. It is the same if you use MS SQL Server, MySQl, Informix, Oracle, and DB2. Link for the ebook will be announced later.

SQL Null or Empty How to Check for Null or Empty Column in SQL Server SQL Training Online

http://www.sqltrainingonline.com SQL Null or Empty - How to Check for Null or Empty Column in SQL Server - SQL Training Online You can download the sample table script at http://www.sqltrainingonline.com/how-to-filter-for-sql-null-or-empty-string/. In this video, I show you how to filter for a SQL null or empty string. It can be difficult to filter a null because you can't simply compare with an equal sign. You have to use a special IS NULL clause to make the filter work. I also show you how to combine both the SQL Null and Empty String together in a special trick with the isnull SQL Server function. I use SQL Server 2012 to demonstrate the technique. Oracle DENSE_RANK Function

04:09
https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-dense_rank/ The Oracle DENSE_RANK function allows you to calculate a rank of a row in a group of rows. It returns this rank as a NUMBER value. This function can be used as either an analytic or an aggregate function, and the syntax depends on how you use it. As an aggregate function it looks like this: DENSE_RANK ( expr, [expr(n)] ) WITHIN GROUP ( ORDER BY (order_expr [ASC|DESC] [NULLS FIRST|LAST] ) These parameters are: - expr: this is the value to search for in a particular table. You can specify multiple search values, and just separate them by a comma. - order_expr: this is used to order the expr values by, because you get a different results depending on what order you rank the values in. - NULLS FIRST or LAST: this is where you can specify if you want to have NULL values appear at the top of your ranking order or at the bottom. As an analytic function, it looks like this: DENSE_RANK() OVER ( [query_partition_clause] order_by_clause) The parameters are: - query_partition_clause: this is the expression that the ranking is “grouped” by, as analytic functions allow you to group data within rows. - order_by_clause: this is the expression to order your results by to determine a rank. For this function, if two records have the same sort or rank position, they will have the same RANK value. It won’t cause a gap in the rankings, unlike the RANK function which does cause a gap. For more information about the Oracle DENSE_RANK function, including all of the SQL shown in this video and the examples, read the related article here: https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-dense_rank/

Oracle Database Indexes: Myths, Tips and Tricks

In this tutorial, OCM John Watson will - via demonstrations - debunk these myths: Myth #1: Oracle Database does not index NULL Myth #2: A search that includes wildcards can't use an index if the wildcard precedes the string. Myth #3: Oracle will not use a function-based index unless the FBI is coded in the predicate. Myth #4: Indexes always help. The more indexes the better. SQL Server 26 - PRIMARY KEY, NOT NULL, UNIQUE

03:36
In the last video we created our first table, but I want to give SQL Server some extra information so the database knows more about each of the columns. The first thing is to establish the primary key. To do this all we do is add PRIMARY KEY after the column we want to be the primary key. Simple enough. When we add a constraint right after the column like this, it is often called a column attribute. CREATE TABLE Animals( ID INT PRIMARY KEY, Name VARCHAR(50), Species VARCHAR(50) ); Additionally, if you are using an ID column, it is best to have it labeled as the IDENTITY column. That way, SQL Server will automatically increment the number. CREATE TABLE Animals( ID INT PRIMARY KEY IDENTITY, Name VARCHAR(50), Species VARCHAR(50) ); The other attributes we've discussed in this series are NOT NULL and UNIQUE. We can make the name NOT NULL and the species NOT NULL. We don't have a good column for UNIQUE, so let's add one: CREATE TABLE Animals( ID INT PRIMARY KEY IDENTITY, Name VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL, Species VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL, ContactEmail VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL UNIUQE ); You can see that it is very easy to add multiple column attributes to a column. Just separate them by spaces. The order does not matter. Also, when you say primary key the column is automatically NOT NULL and UNIQUE. There are other attributes you can use including DEFAULT, FOREIGN KEY, and SPARSE. DEFAULT will give a value for a column if you do not put anything in yourself. Foreign keys are used to reference other columns. SPARSE is an attribute we haven't discussed. You can use SPARSE if most of the rows are going to have a NULL for a column and it saves storage space, but we will worry about that in another video. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Support me! http://www.patreon.com/calebcurry Subscribe to my newsletter: http://bit.ly/JoinCCNewsletter Donate!: http://bit.ly/DonateCTVM2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Additional Links~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ More content: http://CalebCurry.com Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CalebTheVideoMaker Google+: https://plus.google.com/+CalebTheVideoMaker2 Twitter: http://twitter.com/calebCurry Amazing Web Hosting - http://bit.ly/ccbluehost (The best web hosting for a cheap price!)

Part 2 SQL query to get organization hierarchy

10:14
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2014/05/part-2-sql-query-to-get-organization.html To get the best out of this video, the following concepts need to be understood first. These are already discussed in SQL Server Tutorial. 1. Self-Join - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnYSN_7qwgg 2. CTE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXB5b-7HJHk 3. Recursive CTE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGoV0wTMCg0 Here is the problem definition: 1. Employees table contains the following columns a) EmployeeId, b) EmployeeName c) ManagerId 2. If an EmployeeId is passed, the query should list down the entire organization hierarchy i.e who is the manager of the EmployeeId passed and who is managers manager and so on till full hierarchy is listed. For example, Scenario 1: If we pass David's EmployeeId to the query, then it should display the organization hierarchy starting from David. Scenario 2: If we pass Lara's EmployeeId to the query, then it should display the organization hierarchy starting from Lara. We will be Employees table for this demo. SQL to create and populate Employees table with test data Create table Employees ( EmployeeID int primary key identity, EmployeeName nvarchar(50), ManagerID int foreign key references Employees(EmployeeID) ) GO Insert into Employees values ('John', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Mark', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Steve', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Tom', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Lara', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Simon', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('David', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Ben', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Stacy', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Sam', NULL) GO Update Employees Set ManagerID = 8 Where EmployeeName IN ('Mark', 'Steve', 'Lara') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 2 Where EmployeeName IN ('Stacy', 'Simon') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 3 Where EmployeeName IN ('Tom') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 5 Where EmployeeName IN ('John', 'Sam') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 4 Where EmployeeName IN ('David') GO Here is the SQL that does the job Declare @ID int ; Set @ID = 7; WITH EmployeeCTE AS ( Select EmployeeId, EmployeeName, ManagerID From Employees Where EmployeeId = @ID UNION ALL Select Employees.EmployeeId , Employees.EmployeeName, Employees.ManagerID From Employees JOIN EmployeeCTE ON Employees.EmployeeId = EmployeeCTE.ManagerID ) Select E1.EmployeeName, ISNULL(E2.EmployeeName, 'No Boss') as ManagerName From EmployeeCTE E1 LEFT Join EmployeeCTE E2 ON E1.ManagerID = E2.EmployeeId

07 MySQL Tutorial for Beginners: Logical Operators (AND, OR, NOT), NULL, IS NULL Clause

09:39
"Logical operators" enable us to use more than one condition in WHERE clause. You use the AND "logical operator" to specify that the search must satisfy both of the conditions. In other words: both conditions must be true. You can use "logical operators" in a WHERE clause to combine two or more search conditions into a compound condition. You use the OR "logical operator" to specify that the search must satisfy at least one of the conditions. In other words: only one of the conditions must be true. You can use the NOT "logical operator" to negate a search condition. The order of precedence for the logical operators affects the result of a search condition. When MySQL evaluates a compound condition, it evaluates FIRST the AND operator and THEN the OR operator. You can use parentheses to override the order of precedence. If you want, you can use parentheses to clarify the sequence in which the operations are evaluated even if they're not needed for the expression to be evaluated properly, just as you can with arithmetic expressions. A column can contain a NULL value. A NULL value is typically used to indicate that a value is not known, unavailable, or not applicable. A NULL value is not the same as a zero or an empty string. If you want to test for NULL values in search conditions, you have to use the IS NULL clause instead of the normal comparison operators. A NULL value is not the same as a zero and as an empty string. The row that has a NULL value isn't included in the result set when numbers is NOT equal to zero as well. You can also use the NOT operator with the IS NULL clause. For All sql videos in telugu http://www.vlrtraining.in/sql-training-videos-telugu/ In Telugu: SQL NOT NULL Constraint Telugu WHAT IS NOT NULL constraints? MySQL NOT NULL Constraint sql not null query not null in mysql MySQL NOT NULL Constraint The NOT NULL constraint enforces a column to NOT accept NULL values. This enforces a field to always contain a value, which means that you cannot insert a new record, or update a record without adding a value to this field. PL/SQL:NVL/NVL2/Coalesce function

05:26
In this tutorial, you'll learn the difference between NVL,NVL2 &Coalesce functions PL/SQL (Procedural Language/Structured Query Language) is Oracle Corporation's procedural extension for SQL and the Oracle relational database. PL/SQL is available in Oracle Database (since version 7), TimesTen in-memory database (since version 11.2.1), and IBM DB2 (since version 9.7).[1] Oracle Corporation usually extends PL/SQL functionality with each successive release of the Oracle Database. PL/SQL includes procedural language elements such as conditions and loops. It allows declaration of constants and variables, procedures and functions, types and variables of those types, and triggers. It can handle exceptions (runtime errors). Arrays are supported involving the use of PL/SQL collections. Implementations from version 8 of Oracle Database onwards have included features associated with object-orientation. One can create PL/SQL units such as procedures, functions, packages, types, and triggers, which are stored in the database for reuse by applications that use any of the Oracle Database programmatic interfaces. PL/SQL works analogously to the embedded procedural languages associated with other relational databases. For example, Sybase ASE and Microsoft SQL Server have Transact-SQL, PostgreSQL has PL/pgSQL (which emulates PL/SQL to an extent), and IBM DB2 includes SQL Procedural Language,[2] which conforms to the ISO SQL’s SQL/PSM standard. The designers of PL/SQL modeled its syntax on that of Ada. Both Ada and PL/SQL have Pascal as a common ancestor, and so PL/SQL also resembles Pascal in several aspects. However, the structure of a PL/SQL package does not resemble the basic Object Pascal program structure as implemented by a Borland Delphi or Free Pascal unit. Programmers can define public and private global data-types, constants and static variables in a PL/SQL package.[3] PL/SQL also allows for the definition of classes and instantiating these as objects in PL/SQL code. This resembles usage in object-oriented programming languages like Object Pascal, C++ and Java. PL/SQL refers to a class as an "Abstract Data Type" (ADT) or "User Defined Type" (UDT), and defines it as an Oracle SQL data-type as opposed to a PL/SQL user-defined type, allowing its use in both the Oracle SQL Engine and the Oracle PL/SQL engine. The constructor and methods of an Abstract Data Type are written in PL/SQL. The resulting Abstract Data Type can operate as an object class in PL/SQL. Such objects can also persist as column values in Oracle database tables. PL/SQL is fundamentally distinct from Transact-SQL, despite superficial similarities. Porting code from one to the other usually involves non-trivial work, not only due to the differences in the feature sets of the two languages,[4] but also due to the very significant differences in the way Oracle and SQL Server deal with concurrency and locking. There are software tools available that claim to facilitate porting including Oracle Translation Scratch Editor,[5] CEITON MSSQL/Oracle Compiler [6] and SwisSQL.[7] The StepSqlite product is a PL/SQL compiler for the popular small database SQLite. PL/SQL Program Unit A PL/SQL program unit is one of the following: PL/SQL anonymous block, procedure, function, package specification, package body, trigger, type specification, type body, library. Program units are the PL/SQL source code that is compiled, developed and ultimately executed on the database. The basic unit of a PL/SQL source program is the block, which groups together related declarations and statements. A PL/SQL block is defined by the keywords DECLARE, BEGIN, EXCEPTION, and END. These keywords divide the block into a declarative part, an executable part, and an exception-handling part. The declaration section is optional and may be used to define and initialize constants and variables. If a variable is not initialized then it defaults to NULL value. The optional exception-handling part is used to handle run time errors. Only the executable part is required. A block can have a label. Package Packages are groups of conceptually linked functions, procedures, variables, PL/SQL table and record TYPE statements, constants, cursors etc. The use of packages promotes re-use of code. Packages are composed of the package specification and an optional package body. The specification is the interface to the application; it declares the types, variables, constants, exceptions, cursors, and subprograms available. The body fully defines cursors and subprograms, and so implements the specification. Two advantages of packages are: Modular approach, encapsulation/hiding of business logic, security, performance improvement, re-usability. They support object-oriented programming features like function overloading and encapsulation. Using package variables one can declare session level (scoped) variables, since variables declared in the package specification have a session scope.

Intersect operator in sql server

05:29
sql intersect vs join sql server intersect example sql server intersect vs inner join sql server inner join remove duplicates In this video we will discuss 1. Intersect operator in sql server 2. Difference between intersect and inner join Intersect operator retrieves the common records from both the left and the right query of the Intersect operator. Introduced in SQL Server 2005 The number and the order of the columns must be same in both the queries The data types must be same or at least compatible Let us understand INTERSECT operator with an example. The following query retrieves the common records from both the left and the right query of the Intersect operator. Select Id, Name, Gender from TableA Intersect Select Id, Name, Gender from TableB We can also achieve the same thinkg using INNER join. The following INNER join query would produce the exact same result. Select TableA.Id, TableA.Name, TableA.Gender From TableA Inner Join TableB On TableA.Id = TableB.Id What is the difference between INTERSECT and INNER JOIN 1. INTERSECT filters duplicates and returns only DISTINCT rows that are common between the LEFT and Right Query, where as INNER JOIN does not filter the duplicates. To understand this difference, insert the following row into TableA Insert into TableA values (2, 'Mary', 'Female') Now execute the following INTERSECT query. Notice that we get only the DISTINCT rows Select Id, Name, Gender from TableA Intersect Select Id, Name, Gender from TableB Now execute the following INNER JOIN query. Notice that the duplicate rows are not filtered. Select TableA.Id, TableA.Name, TableA.Gender From TableA Inner Join TableB On TableA.Id = TableB.Id You can make the INNER JOIN behave like INTERSECT operator by using the DISTINCT operator Select DISTINCT TableA.Id, TableA.Name, TableA.Gender From TableA Inner Join TableB On TableA.Id = TableB.Id 2. INNER JOIN treats two NULLS as two different values. So if you are joining two tables based on a nullable column and if both tables have NULLs in that joining column then, INNER JOIN will not include those rows in the result-set, where as INTERSECT treats two NULLs as a same value and it returns all matching rows. To understand this difference, execute the following 2 insert statements Insert into TableA values(NULL, 'Pam', 'Female') Insert into TableB values(NULL, 'Pam', 'Female') INTERSECT query Select Id, Name, Gender from TableA Intersect Select Id, Name, Gender from TableB INNER JOIN query Select TableA.Id, TableA.Name, TableA.Gender From TableA Inner Join TableB On TableA.Id = TableB.Id Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/intersect-operator-in-sql-server.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/intersect-operator-in-sql-server_6.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists
