However, which function to use depends on what you want to do when there is a tie. Let me explain with an example. If there are 2 employees with the FIRST highest salary, there are 2 different business cases 1. If your business case is, not to produce any result for the SECOND highest salary, then use RANK function 2. If your business case is to return the next Salary after the tied rows as the SECOND highest Salary, then use DENSE_RANK function Since we have 2 Employees with the FIRST highest salary. Rank() function will not return any rows for the SECOND highest Salary. WITH Result AS ( SELECT Salary, RANK() OVER (ORDER BY Salary DESC) AS Salary_Rank FROM Employees ) SELECT TOP 1 Salary FROM Result WHERE Salary_Rank = 2 Though we have 2 Employees with the FIRST highest salary. In this video he asks a different question: What if you just want to count how many sweets are red? In this case the index holds all the information Oracle needs to answer the query. He shows how the optimizer is able to process this via an index only scan. Chris goes on to investigate index only scans further. He discusses how theses can provide better performance than queries accessing the table itself. Oracle SQL Tutorial 7 - Normalization - Database Design Primer 4

The database normal forms are used to normalize a database. What does it mean to normalize a database? It means to break it up into multiple tables to prevent redundant, conflicting, and bad data. The three normal forms are 1nf, 2nf, and 3nf. These stand for first normal form, second normal form, and third normal form. There are other normal forms, such as Boyce Codd normal form (BCNF), but the first 3 normal forms are the ones that are really important to know. The normal forms depend on one another. It is kind of like a ladder. In order to be in 2nd normal form, you must first be in first normal form. In order to be in 3rd normal form, you must first be in 2nd normal form. First normal form is all about individuality and giving data its space. Each column must be atomic...that is, in the smallest indivisible piece. Each value for the column must also only contain one value. To fix first normal form when you have a column violation, break the column into multiple columns. To fix first normal form when you have data violation, break the column into a new table and have a column that references the old table. Second normal form is all about partial dependencies. A partial dependency is when a column only depends on part of the primary key. This is often seen when you have an intermediary table in a many to many relationship (as a reminder, we break up many to many relationships into one to many relationships with intermediary tables in between). The solution to get rid of partial dependencies is to put the data in the table to where the column depends entirely on the key. If you do not already have a table that fits the rule, you can consider creating one. Third normal form is all about transitive dependencies. This is when a column in a table depends on another column instead of depending solely on the primary key. The solution to this is to take the column that is directly dependent on the primary key and bring it into its own table. Then, you can use foreign keys to connect the tables. This video concluded with a noble speech on how database design is very subjective. Thus is so because as we normalize more and more, the design becomes more and more complex. If we get to the point where we have hundreds of tables for a relatively small database, we can really hurt performance and increase risk of mistakes. Hopefully this video was helpful to everyone. Description NoSQL DEFINITION: Next Generation Databases mostly addressing some of the points: being non-relational, distributed, open-source and horizontally scalable. A NoSQL database environment is, simply put, a non-relational and largely distributed database system that enables rapid, ad-hoc organization and analysis of extremely high-volume, disparate data types. NoSQL databases are sometimes referred to as cloud databases, non-relational databases, Big Data databases and a myriad of other terms and were developed in response to the sheer volume of data being generated, stored and analyzed by modern users (user-generated data) and their applications (machine-generated data). In general, NoSQL databases have become the first alternative to relational databases, with scalability, availability, and fault tolerance being key deciding factors. They go well beyond the more widely understood legacy, relational databases (such as Oracle, SQL Server and DB2 databases) in satisfying the needs of today’s modern business applications. A very flexible and schema-less data model, horizontal scalability, distributed architectures, and the use of languages and interfaces that are “not only” SQL typically characterize this technology. From a business standpoint, considering a NoSQL or ‘Big Data’ environment has been shown to provide a clear competitive advantage in numerous industries. In the ‘age of data’, this is compelling information as a great saying about the importance of data is summed up with the following “if your data isn’t growing then neither is your business”.

Oracle SQL Tutorial 19 - ON DELETE (SET NULL and CASCADE)

Welcome everyone! Something you need to consider when you are creating foreign keys is what happens if you delete the parent? As a reminder, the parent is the row that has the value you are referencing in the row that has a foreign key. Why is this something important to consider? It's important because foreign keys need to protect us from two primary things, unacceptable INSERT statements, and unacceptable DELETE statements. Let's see what happens when we try to insert incorrect data into the table with the foreign key: INSERT INTO projects VALUES (1, 'Update website homepage', 'CalebCurry') The response tells us plainly that there is no such user in the users table. So this works correctly. Deleting data on the other hand works a bit differently because the database does not know what you want to do with the child row when you delete the parent from the parent table. By default, we will get an error message that prevents the parent from being deleted, but there are some other options. How do we configure this? This is where the ON DELETE statement comes in. We add the keywords ON DELETE right after the foreign key and then we can give it the option of CASCADE or SET NULL. CASCADE means that if we delete the parent, we are also going to delete the child. In our situation what that means is that if somebody creates a project in our project table and then that persons account gets deleted, all of the projects he owns will also be deleted. CASCADE: CREATE TABLE projects( project_id NUMBER, Project_name VARCHAR2(50 CHAR) UNIQUE, creator VARCHAR2(50 CHAR) NOT NULL, CONSTRAINT projects_pk PRIMARY KEY (project_id), CONSTRAINT projects_users_fk FOREIGN KEY (creator) REFERENCES users (username) ON DELETE CASCADE ) SET NULL will take the value in the child table and get rid of it. What you are left with is NULL. This means that we have an orphaned child. The first thought you might have is that it is a bad thing to have an orphaned child, but in databases that is not always so. In our application if we had it set to SET NULL, when a user account gets deleted the projects would remain in existence they would just lack a creator. This might be a good thing if you are concerned about the long term survival of a project, this might be the route you want to go. It ultimately depends on the application purpose. If you don't like CASCADE or SET NULL, you can leave the entire ON DELETE statement and just have Oracle throw an error when a parent is deleted. As for us, we are going to use ON DELETE CASCADE. We need to use this with extreme caution. If you are not careful, someday you will run a delete a row and that will cascade through you database deleting a bunch of stuff you didn't want to delete. Stuff happens, so make sure you back up your database every once in eternity. Now, in the last video we started with a database design that had three tables. We've only created two in this video. In the next video we are going to create the next one, which is a little special. Oracle SQL Tutorial 11 - CREATE TABLE

The way you create a table is to use the CREATE TABLE command. CREATE TABLE users() So in this situation, the name comes right after the TABLE keyword. The next thing we do is put all of the columns on a line that we want to put in our table. CREATE TABLE users( user_id, username, first_name, last_name ) Notice the naming conventions here. For this series we are going to make columns with what is known as snake casing. This is where each individual word is separated by an underscore. if you have more than one column, all of them have to have commas except the last one. The comma is a way to say that another column is coming, so you don't need to do it on the last one. Now you would think we were done, but we also have to say what data type each column is. Later we will extensively discuss data types so we can focus on them exclusively. For now, here are the data types we are going to use: CREATE TABLE users( user_id NUMBER, username VARCHAR2(50), first_name VARCHAR2(50), last_name VARCHAR2(50) ) Now, inside of the parenthesis for varchar2, we pass in a number... This is the max length of the string. But the question is, what is it measured in? The default is actually in bytes, not characters. For example if we have the string hello, it is 5 characters, but it might take up a total of 10 bytes of storage. So I would recommend adding the keyword char right after the number so it defaults to 50 characters, not bytes. CREATE TABLE users( user_id NUMBER, username VARCHAR(50 CHAR), first_name VARCHAR2(50 CHAR), last_name VARCHAR2(50 CHAR) ) This will work to create a table, but it's really missing a lot of information… which column is the primary key? Are we adding any indexes? Is there any thing else we need to say about these columns? So as you can tell, we are making progress, but there is still so much to learn. The biggest gotcha to remember from this video is that the data type VARCHAR ends in a 2, stupid, right? who would end the name of something with a 2? mysql tutorial for beginners (6/8) : Indexes As things stand, the table students works and can be searched without problem by MySQL—until it grows to more than a couple of hundred rows, At that point, database accesses will get slower and slower with every new row added, because MySQL has to search through every row whenever a query is issued. This is like searching through every book in a library whenever you need to look something up. Of course, you don’t have to search libraries that way, because they have either a card index system or, most likely, a database of their own. The way to achieve fast searches is to add an index, either when creating a table or at any time afterward. But the decision is not so simple. For example, there are different index types such as a regular INDEX, PRIMARY KEY, and FULLTEXT. Also, you must decide which columns require an index, a judgment that requires you to predict whether you will be searching any of the data in that column. And even when you’ve decided that, you still have the option of reducing index size by limiting the amount of each column to be indexed. If we imagine the searches that may be made on the students table, it becomes apparent that all of the columns may need to be searched. Anyway, go ahead and add an index to each of the columns, using the commands: ALTER TABLE students ADD INDEX(name(3)); An alternative to using ALTER TABLE to add an index is to use the CREATE INDEX command. They are equivalent, except that CREATE INDEX cannot be used for creating a PRIMARY KEY CREATE INDEX surname ON students (surname(5)); DESCRIBE students; These commands create indexes on both the name and surname columns, limiting name index to only the first 3 characters, and surname index to the first 5 characters. For instance, when MySQL indexes the following name: SAFAA It will actually store in the index only the first 3 characters: SAF This is done to minimize the size of the index, and to optimize database access speed. DESCRIBE command shows the key MUL for each column. This key means that multiple occurrences of a value may occur within that column, which is exactly what we want, as name or surname may appear many times. You don’t have to wait, until after creating a table to add indexes. In fact, doing so can be time-consuming, as adding an index to a large table can take a very long time. Therefore, let’s look at a command that creates the table students with indexes already in place. CREATE TABLE students ( Id_studnet SMALLINT UNSIGNED NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, name VARCHAR(10) NOT NULL, surname VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL, email VARCHAR(30) NOT NULL, INDEX(name(3)), INDEX(surname(5)), ,PRIMARY KEY(id_studnet),UNIQUE(email)); Another important index, PK, its single unique key for each student to enable instant accessing of a row. The importance of having a key with a unique value for each row will come up when we start to combine data from different tables. You can add PK, while you create the table at the first time, or later by issuing the following command: ALTER TABLE students ADD PRIMARY KEY(id_student); The last important index, FULLTEXT index Unlike a regular index, MySQL’s FULLTEXT allows super-fast searches of entire columns of text. It stores every word in every data string in a special index that you can search using “natural language,” in a similar manner to using a search engine. It’s not strictly true that MySQL stores all the words in a FULLTEXT index, because it has a built-in list of more than 500 words that it chooses to ignore because they are so common that they aren’t very helpful for searching anyway. This list, called stopwords, includes the, as, is, of, and so on. The list helps MySQL run much more quickly when performing a FULLTEXT search and keeps database sizes down. FULLTEXT indexes can be created for CHAR, VARCHAR, and TEXT columns only. A FULLTEXT index definition can be given in the CREATE TABLE statement when a table is created, or added later using ALTER TABLE (or CREATE INDEX). Adding a FULLTEXT index to the table students for the columns name and surname ALTER TABLE classics ADD FULLTEXT(name,surname); this index is in addition to the ones already created and does not affect them You can now perform FULLTEXT searches across this pair of columns. If you find that MySQL is running slower than you think it should be when accessing your database, the problem is usually related to your indexes. Either you don’t have an index where you need one, or the indexes are not optimally designed. Tweaking a table’s indexes will often solve such a problem. How does Oracle Exadata Smart Scan work? What is Smart Scan. How to insure Oracle is offloading work to the Storage Tier? John Watson: I want to show you very briefly how offload Smart Scan or flow processing can actually function. I'm working here just in the little demonstration Scott schema. I'll enable auto tracing so that we can see the effect on execution plans, which will also show me whether offload processing is indeed possible. So it's a simple query. I'll use a function here to check that to get offloaded as well as the column selection and the row selection and column projection. We'll have a predicate. Right. So there is the statement. It returned these three scalar values, as you would expect. How was this actually executed? There was a select statement, then it was executed, table access full. That's the only way to run that statement given the index on that table because in the middle of this, we see the key word, "storage." That key word tells me that this statement could indeed be offloaded to the storage tier. Furthermore, we see down here in the predicate information, "storage." That key word again tells me that the row filtering could have been done by the storage tier. So what happened is that the storage tier did not return every block of the empty* table to the database buffer cache, where my session would then have had to extract these values. All it returned to the instance was these three scalar values directly into the PGA of my server process. Now, there's also the initcap function there. Was that offloadable or not? There is a view "Read our SQL fm letter data," and that will tell us for each function whether or not it can be offloaded. So, just select its name, whether it's offloadable. Declare offloadable as yes and put in a sort order as well, and we see that in the current release, there are 393 functions that can be offloaded. Which ones? All the typecasting functions, truncations, trims. These are functions that get executed millions of times an hour in many, many environments. Note here two particularly important ones, balloon filters. The offload capability for balloon filters allows us to offload joins or facts to dimension tables. Those two in star schemas can be offloaded. The function I used was, in fact, initcap. Just for completeness, we'll scroll through all of these and we'll see that initcap itself is an offloadable function, and there it is along with many others. There are two classes of function that cannot be offloaded, and those are the aggregation functions and the analytic functions. I mention them just for completeness. There's an architectural issue there because aggregations and analytics potentially require access to all rows in the table. The row might be distributed across a cell. So it's a technical issue why they can't be offloaded, but virtually, all other functions can be offloaded with terrific drops in CPU usage, and combining that with the reduction of data traffic into the instances will give us vast performance improvements.

Next up on our MySQL to-do list is to learn about storing dates and times. There are various data types in MySQL for storing dates and times. It seems MySQL and databases likes to break everything up into multiple data types to make things more organized at the consequence of being confusing and annoying. This video is going to be talking about the DATETIME, DATE, and TIME data types. These are all used to store, you guessed it, dates and times. The one you choose depends on your needs. If you just need dates, choose DATE. If you just need times, choose TIME, if you need both stored together, choose DATETIME. Now you set a column one of these data types whenever you want every row for this field to have some sort of date, time or both…but how exactly is the data formatted? This requires us to understand some convention. For example, in the USA at least, if you have something like 4:30AM, by convention you know the hour is 4 and the minutes are 30. But this is just an agreed upon convention. MySQL has its own convention…For example 2017-02-02. The first thing is the year, the second is the month, and the third is the day. That is for the DATE. The convention for time is 22:54:30. The first is the hour (military time), the second is the minute, and the third is the seconds. Lastly, there can actually be fractions of seconds…up to microseconds! .123456. To use fractional seconds though you must specify to MySQL the precision of the TIME or DATETIME when you create it, for example DATETIME(6) would allow microsecond precision. How do you actually give a date to MySQL? By that I mean let's say you have a table with a column of DATETIME(6), and you want to give a value for that column, how do you format it? It's quoted. A NoSQL database environment is, simply put, a non-relational and largely distributed database system that enables rapid, ad-hoc organization and analysis of extremely high-volume, disparate data types. NoSQL databases are sometimes referred to as cloud databases, non-relational databases, Big Data databases and a myriad of other terms and were developed in response to the sheer volume of data being generated, stored and analyzed by modern users (user-generated data) and their applications (machine-generated data). In general, NoSQL databases have become the first alternative to relational databases, with scalability, availability, and fault tolerance being key deciding factors. They go well beyond the more widely understood legacy, relational databases (such as Oracle, SQL Server and DB2 databases) in satisfying the needs of today’s modern business applications. A very flexible and schema-less data model, horizontal scalability, distributed architectures, and the use of languages and interfaces that are “not only” SQL typically characterize this technology. From a business standpoint, considering a NoSQL or ‘Big Data’ environment has been shown to provide a clear competitive advantage in numerous industries. In the ‘age of data’, this is compelling information as a great saying about the importance of data is summed up with the following “if your data isn’t growing then neither is your business”.

Description NoSQL DEFINITION: Next Generation Databases mostly addressing some of the points: being non-relational, distributed, open-source and horizontally scalable. A NoSQL database environment is, simply put, a non-relational and largely distributed database system that enables rapid, ad-hoc organization and analysis of extremely high-volume, disparate data types. NoSQL databases are sometimes referred to as cloud databases, non-relational databases, Big Data databases and a myriad of other terms and were developed in response to the sheer volume of data being generated, stored and analyzed by modern users (user-generated data) and their applications (machine-generated data). In general, NoSQL databases have become the first alternative to relational databases, with scalability, availability, and fault tolerance being key deciding factors. They go well beyond the more widely understood legacy, relational databases (such as Oracle, SQL Server and DB2 databases) in satisfying the needs of today’s modern business applications. A very flexible and schema-less data model, horizontal scalability, distributed architectures, and the use of languages and interfaces that are “not only” SQL typically characterize this technology. From a business standpoint, considering a NoSQL or ‘Big Data’ environment has been shown to provide a clear competitive advantage in numerous industries. In the ‘age of data’, this is compelling information as a great saying about the importance of data is summed up with the following “if your data isn’t growing then neither is your business”.

Today, I actually took it out to an open space and practiced for 30 minutes. As it turns out, practicing in an open space makes all the difference. Just like a bike, it’s much easier to stay up when you’re in motion. Of course, once I do get the hang of this I’ll need to work on standing in place, steering, and riding backwards. Another great skill to work on will be mounting the unicycle without support. When I get to that point, I should probably think about wearing the wrist guards they sent. Admittedly, wearing the wrist guards at this stage would be a lot like wearing knee pads for kitchen safety…they just don’t protect the parts of my body that are getting hurt: namely my back and my balls. For the most part though, I’ve been landing on my feet. Unlike a bike, you rarely get tangled up in the wreckage when you fall on a unicycle. Next time I’m going to find an even bigger space, and commit to getting the hang of riding around consistently. Maybe I’ll even do it in a grassy clearing, since this is, after all, an off road model. All in all, at 30 minutes in, I’m pretty satisfied with my progress.
