This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. Did you know there are three different types of affiliate marketing? Well there are, so I’m going to explain each strategy and its requirements so you can pick the technique that is right for you. When you’re just getting into affiliate marketing, there are three different strategies you can use. Unattached, related, or involved affiliate marketing, and each strategy has different requirements & marketing strategies. The first style is probably the most popular style and it is Called unattached affiliate marketing. With this style there is no connection between you and the customer throughout the whole process, all you’re doing is using ads to put an affiliate link in front of a targeted audience in hopes that they’ll buy the offer. This style is super popular because it doesn’t require you to have any sort of presence or authority in your niche, unlike the other two styles of affiliate marketing. It can take a long time and a lot of work to build up a big following, and a good reputation in your niche and quite honestly a lot of people just aren’t patient enough, or don’t have the time, so this is their only option. Out of the three strategies this one is the most short term and the most risky because you are spending money upfront in hopes of getting a sale, but once you get good at it the strategy can bring in huge amounts of sales extremely quickly, which is why a lot of people are drawn to it. The second form of affiliate marketing is called related affiliate marketing. With this style your goal is to build a connection with your target audience using YouTube videos, blogs, or Facebook groups, and you promote affiliate offers related to your niche but that you don’t actually use. If you use the strategy, and you just start promoting every affiliate offer out there in your niche you’ll see horrible results, because even if you do make a sale that person will lose all trust in you when They find out that you promoted a crappy offer to them, which means you’ll never make a sale from them again, and it will just make your brand look bad. Generally speaking I think this type of affiliate marketing is easier than unattached affiliate marketing, but it does take longer to have success with. If you want to give this strategy a try you’re going to need to create content for a YouTube channel, or a blog. You’re going to need a lot of patience, and you’re going to want to learn how to get traffic to your content using SEO, and other free traffic strategies. The last style of affiliate marketing is involved affiliate marketing. With this style of affiliate marketing you only promote offers that you have used, and you personally recommend it to your audience. This is my favorite strategy because Instead of using your money to get people to buy affiliate offers, you are using your reputation, and Authority to get people to buy, so the more helpful you are the more sales you make. If you start using a new affiliate product or offer in your niche, you’ll have a audience to promote that offer to, and as long as you keep promoting good offers and keep helping them you’ll continue having success. I could make an argument that this should be the only style of affiliate marketing because it brings the affiliate marketer the most long-term success, it gives the most value to the customer, and overall it’s just the best experience for everyone. As I have already made very clear, I prefer to use involved affiliate marketing, but that doesn’t mean the other styles aren’t just as effective. These two tribes have very different thoughts when it comes to innovation in music and the idea of listening to your fans. 4. Create Work That Excites Fans A musician today has two jobs; creating and communicating. Music Business Institute is primarily about teaching the latter rather than the former because we have to assume you know how to create exciting work. Creating is about honing your craft as a musician. Communicating is about learning how to market and sell what you have created. It's why we call it the Music Business. Music + Business. 5. Identify Fan Type OK, by this point you know that building lists, developing relationships with them, learning what they want and creating work that excites them is important. The 'fan ladder' looks to move someone from just being mildly interested in your music to where they will buy everything you ever produce (concert tickets, recordings, merchandise). You want to move them from being a 'suspect' to a 'super fan' or "true fans". 6. Empower Super Fans Successful artists always have their own small army of super fans. Beliebers (Justin Bieber), Swifties (Taylor Swift), Little Monsters (Lady Gaga), Lovatics (Demi Lovato) and Smilers (Miley Cyrus) are all examples of Super Fans. 7. Promote Work Using Events The final step is about promoting your work using events. Firstly events they create excitement around your music. There are different types of events which can be used to promote your work. There are product launch events, tour announcement events, promotional events and many more. Everyone who has tried these methods has a different take on them of course, and it depends on what types of projects you are making and selling, but hopefully our personal experiences will help others who are interested in selling handmade products. We think one cool thing about selling handmade is you can do it as a full business or as a side hustle, so it's easy to dip your toes into it. We started out doing pop up shops and starting an Etsy page, and these led us to joining the West Elm local program where we started selling wholesale. We'd love to hear others' tips and tricks as well, since we are still learning lots the more we do this.
