Subscribe to the new Off Book channel at http://www.youtube.com/pbsoffbook We swim in an ocean of products. Behind each one, there is someone (hopefully) thinking about the way we experience it. In this episode of Off Book, we explore three aspects of product design: build quality and engineering fundamentals, humanism and sustainability, and speculation on the future of the product experience. In discussion with the 4th generation owner of a classic brand, a brilliant designer of socially progressive products, and an MIT researcher looking to revolutionize the product experience through 3D printing, we'll capture a sense of the values and challenges in the contemporary world of product design. The first secret of great design | Tony Fadell

16:42
As human beings, we get used to "the way things are" really fast. But for designers, the way things are is an opportunity ... Could things be better? How? In this funny, breezy talk, the man behind the iPod and the Nest thermostat shares some of his tips for noticing — and driving — change. Biomimicry design, explained with 99% Invisible. Check them out here: https://99percentinvisible.org/ Subscribe to our channel here: http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Japan’s Shinkansen doesn’t look like your typical train. With its long and pointed nose, it can reach top speeds up to 150–200 miles per hour. It didn’t always look like this. Earlier models were rounder and louder, often suffering from the phenomenon of "tunnel boom," where deafening compressed air would rush out of a tunnel after a train rushed in. But a moment of inspiration from engineer and birdwatcher Eiji Nakatsu led the system to be redesigned based on the aerodynamics of three species of birds. Nakatsu’s case is a fascinating example of biomimicry, the design movement pioneered by biologist and writer Janine Benyus. She's a co-founder of the Biomimicry Institute, a non-profit encouraging creators to discover how big challenges in design, engineering, and sustainability have often already been solved through 3.8 billion years of evolution on earth. We just have to go out and find them. Designing Your Life | Bill Burnett | TEDxStanford

25:21
Executive director of Stanford’s design program at the d.School, Bill Burnett uses design thinking, a career’s worth of starting companies and coaching students, and a childhood spent drawing cars and airplanes under his Grandmother’s sewing machine to inform his work on how to design your life. In five eyebrow-raising findings, Burnett offers simple but life-changing advice on designing the life you want, whether you are contemplating college or retirement. After years of drawing cars and airplanes under his Grandmother’s sewing machine, Bill Burnett went to college where he discovered that there were people in the world who did this kind of thing every day (without the sewing machine), and they were called designers. Thirty years, five companies, and a couple thousand students later, Burnett is still drawing and building things, teaching others how to do the same, and quietly enjoying the fact that no one has discovered that he is having too much fun. As Executive Director of the Design Program at Stanford, he runs undergraduate and graduate programs in design, both interdepartmental programs between the mechanical engineering and art departments. Burnett worked on design of the award-winning Apple PowerBooks and the original Hasbro Star Wars action figures. He holds a number of mechanical and design patents. Product Design Process

02:29
There are various product design processes and many focus on different aspects. It helps designers formulate their product from ideas. This process is usually completed by a group of people, i.e. industrial designers, field experts (e.g. prospective users), engineers, etc. depending upon the products involved. The process focuses on figuring out what is required, brainstorming possible ideas, creating mock prototypes, and then generating the product. However, that is not the end of the process. At this point, product designers would still need to execute the idea, making it into an actual product and then evaluate its success by seeing if any improvements are necessary. The product design process has experienced huge leaps in evolution over the last few years with the rise and adoption of 3D printing. New consumer-friendly 3D printers can produce dimensional objects and print upwards with a plastic like substance opposed to traditional printers that spread ink across a page. The design process follows a guideline involving three main sections: Analysis Concept Synthesis For more great information visit: http://www.focuspdm.com/

How to Create a Packaging Design Mockup in Photoshop

18:39
I Guarantee I Can Teach You to Master Photoshop. Learn How: https://phlearn.com/aaronwillteachyou Our #1 PRO Tutorial ever is now on Sale! https://phlearn.com/rtyoutube Have you ever wanted to create a mockup of how your graphic design will look on the package it's destined to be printed on? Throughout any designer's life, either for yourself or for a client, you will work on a graphic that needs to be printed out and applied to a physical object. The hardest aspects of adding text, logos, or graphics to any surface inside a photo is getting the perspective, color, and texture correct. Aaron will guide you through a step-by-step process for making this tedious design task, both easy and phun. Copy the Logo Onto Your Clipboard Use Move Tool (V) to drag Logo onto Box document. Transform (CTRL/CMD + T) to make logo smaller, and fit box. Next, copy logo onto clipboard by holding CTRL/CMD and clicking on logo thumbnail to select it, then hitting CTRL/CMD + C to copy the selection to the clipboard. Make Logo layer invisible and deselect (CTRL/CMD + D). Create a new layer, and on it go to 'Filter - Vanishing Point'. Create Perspective Plane In the Vanishing Point Filter, click on the Create Plane Tool and place a point at each of the four corners of the box. The filter will automatically connect these dots into a perspective grid. Get it as accurate as possible, but don't worry if it needs fixing - you can edit your points at any time. Place Logo in Filter Hit CTRL/CMD + V to paste the Logo (from your clipboard) into the filter. Transform the image (CTRL/CMD + T) to make it the right size for the box. Then, just click and drag it onto the plane, and it will automatically transform into perspective. To create another plane next to the first one, choose the Create Plane Tool. Click on a side of the first grid, hold CTRL/CMD, and drag out to the end of the box to create your second plane. Follow the same steps to paste and drag your logo onto this second plane, and it will transform into perspective as well. Blur the Logo for a More Realistic Look As a bonus, we cover how to blur the logo so it matches the perspective blur of your photo. Right click on your logo layer and click 'Convert to Smart Object', allowing you to use a smart filter. After the conversion, go to 'Filter - Blur Gallery - Tilt Shift', and adjust the settings to make your logos look like they're blurring into the distance. Since it's a smart filter, you can go back and change your blur at any time. And that's it for creating a packaging design mock-up in Photoshop! It's a simple way to show your design work in action. How to Launch Your First Amazon FBA Product: 6 Hacks to a Home-Run Success (w/ Daniel Audunsson)

14:56
How to launch your first Amazon FBA product + 6 hacks to make it a home-run success. ►► How to Make $10,000/Month Online: http://wholesaleted.com/4-step There are 2 secrets that you need to know to launch your first Amazon FBA product and make it a home-run success even if it’s your first product. And these 2 secrets are… 1) Sales Velocity 2) Conversions These are the 2 key factors the Amazon algorithm uses when choosing which products will sit at the top of their search results (the search engine accounts for 90% of sales on Amazon). Here is what you need to do to launch your first Amazon FBA product and make it a home-run success (even if it’s your first product): You need to match (or ideally improve on) the sales velocity & conversions of your top competitor for 2 weeks. If you do this… then your item will soar to the top of the search results - and YOU’LL start making all of the organic sales for your product! Hack #1 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Use product giveaways Product giveaways for your Amazon FBA private label product are one of the most powerful strategies at your disposal for massively increasing your sales velocity & conversions. You can’t give products away for free but you can give people a heavily discounted coupon that lets them buy it for just 99 cents, which means you are basically giving it away for free. And this is simple: Sign up for a service like JumpSend or ZonBlast. These services have a huge membership base of people that are keen to purchase heavily discounted items on Amazon. They will then distribute your coupon to it’s members. Not only will this drastically increase your sales, but the conversions will be high: You can expect around 50%. Hack #2 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Lower the price If your item starts getting sales (product giveaways are of course a great way to do this) and traction, you can then attract more sales from simply lowering the price below your competition for a week or two. If your product is already ranked in the top few results and you want to climb to the top, this strategy alone can be enough. Hack #3 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Use SuperURLs When someone clicks on your product listing after finding it using the Amazon search engine, they enter using a SuperURL: It’s a URL containing tracking information that tells the Amazon algorithm that they arrived at your listing through finding it using the search engine. You can give people this URL instead of your usual product URL to trick the algorithm into thinking that people found (and bought your item) through finding it using the search engine. Be aware though, this is a controversial method. Experts like Daniel recommend only pushing through a maximum of 20% of your sales this way. Hack #4 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Use paid advertising You can place paid ads in the Amazon search engine for your item, targeting specific keywords. When someone buys a product through clicking on it, not only will this increase your sales velocity - but it’ll help your product rank organically for that keyword as well. Hack #5 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Increase the conversions on your listing & get reviews It’s not enough to get the initial sales & conversions from drastically lowering your price: You need to have a high-converting listing so that when you reach the top of the search results you’ll keep making more sales than your competitor, otherwise the Amazon algorithm will drop you in the results. Here are some tips for increasing your conversions on your listing: * Have the maximum number of HD photos that are big enough the customer can zoom in on them. * Have a keyword rich product title. * Have multiple bullet points with excellent copy. * Have a descriptive product description that has photos included in it. Be sure to email and follow up with your customers, asking them to leave an honest review. If you do this, you can increase the rate of people leaving a review to as high as 10-15% (compared to less than 5%). Hack #6 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Use Amazon Marketing Services Amazon Market Services (AMS) is an advertising platform that you need to be specially approved for. When you are approved it lets you advertise on lots of pages on Amazon, such as your competitor’s pages. Because it requires pre-approval, most of your competition won’t be using it. So you can use this to place ads in larger amounts than 99% of your competitors and outsell them.

Strategic Product Design - Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft

03:36
The focus of the Strategic Product Design (SPD) Master’s programme is on the business context of product and service design. This can be the context of large international corporations, strong design consultancies, or start-up entrepreneurship. The programme’s emphasis is on translating a company’s strategy and market opportunities into a strong product or service portfolio. SPD provides the insights and the tools to exploit business resources and market opportunities. In other words, it aims at maximising the impact of design on business and markets! Students learn to apply techniques like market and brand analysis, future scenarios, and technology road mapping as drivers for strategic product design. They also learn to create robust design strategies for business with a strong social and economic rationale. Ultimately, students acquire the skills to help companies conceptualise, develop and introduce socially sound, and commercially successful products and services. http://spd.msc.tudelft.nl/

Why a Minimum Viable Product Design Strategy Works - Joe Stump

03:28
In Chapter 16 of 17 in his 2011 Capture Your Flag interview with host Erik Michielsen, Internet entrepreneur and SimpleGeo CTO Joe Stump shares why less is more when designing and building consumer Internet products. He takes a minimum viable product - or MVP - approach to release products with core features and build on them after initial feedback. He contrasts this with taking an approach that layers on non-essential features that dilute user experience and core feature functionality. He notes Apple and its initial iPhone release with roughly six apps. Stump is the co-founder and CTO at SimpleGeo (www.simplegeo.com), a San Francisco-based mobile location infrastructure services company. Previously Stump was Lead Architect at Digg. He programs in PHP, Python, Django and enjoys scaling websites. He earned a BBA in Computer Information Systems from Eastern Michigan University. *HONEST* Squishy Kit Review | Soft N Slo DIY Squishies

07:34
Hey! Today I am going to be testing out the NEW DIY squishy set by Soft N Slo. These are blank squishies that are to be bought with special paint markers for decorating. FAQs: –Isn't there an orange color in the "bright" pack of markers? NO. It is a very dark orange, looks very close to red. There's a bright red and a dark red, but NO orange. –Is This a Sponsored Review? Nope! I found and bought these on my own. –Where can you buy these? In the US (don't know about everywhere else) I have seen the squishies at Michaels and 5 Below. BUT the only place I have seen the squishies AND markers is at AC Moore. The company said that they are in Walmart as well, but I have yet to see them in either of the Walmarts in my area. VIDEO FACTS: 1.) I knew these where coming out about 2 months ago because of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NexJrDwcVIA Ever since, I have been looking for them! Finally, this past week I was able to find both the squishies and markers in AC Moore. 2.) Update on the squishy: the color has continued to rub off. AND it now has a sticky feel that leaves residue on my hands. Lovely. 3.) I will add the markers to my Etsy if anyone says they want them. Just lemme know :) MY UPLOAD SCHEDULE: Every Friday: Alternating drawing videos (create this book & this is not a book) AND craft/DIY videos AND Some Mondays: Squishy Updates, mail openings, vlogs, announcements, unboxing videos, show and tell etc. WHERE TO BUY MY BOOK: https://www.amazon.com/Create-This-Book-Moriah-Elizabeth/dp/0692452745/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1471023699&sr=8-1&keywords=create+this+book VISIT MY WEBSITE: http://www.moriah.video/ INSTAGRAM: instagram.com/moriahelizabethofficial Prelude No. 15 by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://chriszabriskie.com/preludes/ Artist: http://chriszabriskie.com/ EMAIL ME PICTURES OF YOUR ART: [email protected] FOR BUSINESS INQUIRIES ONLY: [email protected]

How to Make Homemade Squishies!

08:40
This is an ALTERNATIVE to method to getting memory foam and cutting it up, like a lot of other people do. I believe that this way is much faster and easier if you want to make a BUNCH of something common like cupcakes or donuts. Plus, the shape always turns out perfect, you can get more detail and it is ultimately cheaper. If you don't have access to an old matress, the foam normally used to make these is quite expensive. The solution that I bought to make the foam ended up making over 60 of these squishies. *****WARNING*****PLEASE wear gloves AND long sleeves while using this solution. I just got a comment that someone did not wear gloves and got a rash on their hands! The foam is perfectly safe to touch once it is dry, but you do NOT want this solution on your skin while it is wet!!!!! If you are young, PLEASE get a parent to help you with this! I hope you guys love these as much as i do, or at least enjoy watching me make them! If you have any questions, please ask in the comments or go to my website to contact me. there is not a whole lot of information on how to do this specific technique, so I would love to be of help if you are interested! Also, please let me know about the following: 1. if you want to see me do periodical updates of my future squishies 2. if you would like to see a video where i talk more in depth about this. I had to leave out a lottt of information to keep this video relatively short, so let me know if you want a follow up video with more information! my creative portfolio

01:31
When I was searching for portfolio templates and samples on the internet, I couldn’t find one that had a huge variety of different content. Every one I found was for a specific type of content, e.g. film or photography. I have diverse yet connected talents and skills which I enjoy all equally. Therefore picking just one to specify in wasn’t an option. So I decided to break the system and combine everything into one creative portfolio. Its ONE binder that shows everything. If someone were to peek at my portfolio, they are exposed to everything at once yet they don’t feel ambushed. Because they didn’t have to sort through multiple different books, folders and links, they simply had to just turn the page. --WHY I MADE IT-- The idea of making it big on youtube was never something I was aiming to do. I always used youtube as a hobby, simply a creative output. But now, I’m at the stage of my life where I need to decide what I want to do in my future, youtube not being the main one. Thus, creating my portfolio enables me to show off what I’ve got “in the real world”. --WHY IS IT IMPORTANT— A company took a look at my portfolio, they were able to see who I am, my variety of skills, my level of skills and how I obtained those skills. They were impressed and offered me a job. I have absolutely no formal training skills so DO NOT feel discouraged about showing off what you’ve got, regardless of how you obtained it. What you’re capable of, is worth showing off. You don’t even need a ton of different talents, one, two, ten. All that matters is that you do not disregard something you’re good at because you feel you need to ‘pick one’. PICK THEM ALL AND SHOW THEM OFF. Also, I doesn’t have to only be for creative people. If you’re a sporty person, you can compile all of your achievements and skills and put them together etc. --HOW I MADE IT-- Binder - http://www.takealot.com/bantex-create-a-cover-2-d-ring-a4-25mm-ring-binder-white/PLID3647 Plastic sleeves Black cardboard Photographs printed at fotofirst Art works were all photocopied It was all compiled using ‘Pages’ on my mac NB: Always keep your original copy and either get hard copies made or scan it into the computer and create a PDF you can email or upload somewhere. Elon Musk: How to Start a Business (Elon Musk 2017)

30:40
Elon Musk: How to Start a Business! Seriously Take Notes! Did you know Tesla has a zero dollar marketing budget? It’s true. Despite operating in the emerging alternate energy car market (and rampant skepticism that electric cars could even compete), Tesla had an incredibly successful IPO in 2010 and continues to struggle to produce cars fast enough to meet demand. It seems amazing that they’ve been able to pull that off without marketing, but Elon Musk’s explanation for their success is simple: a relentless focus on making the highest-quality cars possible. The vast majority of Tesla’s budget (and about 70% of Musk’s time and energy as CEO) is devoted to research and development. Musk only spends 2 to 3% of his time talking to the press, with plans to cut it down to 1% so he can free up time for – you guessed it! – more focus on engineering and design. Marketing done right can be extremely powerful; I’m not saying it has no place in your business model. The vast majority of us don’t have Elon Musk-level capital to fund our businesses and get them off the ground. But if it comes down to a choice between more marketing for a mediocre product, or money money spent improving product quality, I’d choose quality every time. Quality outlasts trends and bids for brief attention. It leaves a lasting impression – one that turns customers into lifelong fans and the most effective marketers you could dream of. Artist and designer Andrew Bawidmann's stylized cheesecake queens turn the WWII-era pin-ups into playful pop-art. Inspired by pin-up masters like Gil Elvgren and George Petty, And bomber art seen at a nearby Air Force museum, this Columbus, Ohio-based artist crafts dames that always bare both killer curves and sharp personalities. Like their pin-up predecessors of yesteryear, these Lookers can be found on the front lines, on patrol under BDUS, SF schools, and tacked up on the barrack walls. From time to time, Bawidamann also engages in various 'shenanigans' that include tactical product design/branding, knives, military accessories, and other nefarious pursuits. http://www.bawidamann.com

Christien Meindertsma: Design includes what lies behind the product

04:52
Christien Meindertsma’s designs blur the line between production and product. The Rotterdam-based designer’s work is a vehicle to make the invisible processes behind her products visible. “I specialise in the process of how things are made,” she says in this exclusive video with Design Indaba. “It’s interesting to make processes transparent, so I try to incorporate my way of working into still existing industries because I really believe in local production.” She became interested in the flax industry in the Netherlands in 2009 when she created a collection of products for Thomas Eyck, in collaboration with traditional ropemaker Touwslagerij Steenbergen and woodworkers Kuperus & Gardenier. The Netherlands was a major producer of flax but nowadays it is farmed in smaller quantities with the vast majority exported to China and India for processing, she says. Like her Pig 05049 project that researched the many different products made from a single pig (including heart valves, ammunition, chewing gum, bio diesel and porcelain), the Flax Project investigates the complete life cycle of flax from seed to rope (used in hanging lights, mats and even an ottoman) and yarn (used in tablecloths). But Meindertsma took her commitment to production one step further: When the flax farm she was working with received a sales offer from a Chinese buyer, she bought the whole plot. "I am now the happy owner of 10 000 kilos of flax," she says. With filmmaker Roel van Tour she is documenting all the steps in flax production as the seeds are planted, grown, harvested and processed. Meindertsma’s interest in asking what lies beneath the systems and processes society takes for granted dates back to her days as a student at Design Academy Eindhoven. Her graduation project, Checked Baggage, collected the hundreds of items confiscated by Schiphol Airport security over one week post-9/11, labeling them carefully and collating them into a book. “I felt that a lot of these security measures were a fake way of making us safe,” she says. Her book “was a way of showing the seriousness but also the powerlessness of securing everyone”. In 2012, the Dutch designer was asked by Museum Rotterdam and visual arts studio Wandschappen to create something new out of a collection of 500 sweaters knitted by Rotterdam resident Loes Veenstra. The sweaters, which she began knitting in 1955, had been stored in cardboard boxes in her home. “The sweater were never worn, which I thought was a tragedy,” says Meindertsma. Organising them by yarn colour and pattern, she cataloged them in a series of beautiful photographs. Veenstra was celebrated in a massive street festival that included a group of serenaders, a marching band and a dance troupe – all wearing her sweaters. In Meindertsma’s view, the process is so inherently a part of product design, that she doesn’t define herself as a “social designer”. “I think designing a product should make sense for whatever lies behind the product – the crops, the animals, the people making it,” she notes. “For me its logical that product design is social.”
