portfolio students of product design episode 8

24:07
In students of product design episode 8 I cover putting together an interview design portfolio and an Internet portfolio for a graduate. When I graduated many moons ago, Internet portfolios were in their infancy and things were clearer. You sent a company your CV with a cover letter and a teaser which was a group of nice images of your designs, if they liked you, they invited you in for an interview and you showed them a paper version of your portfolio. These days the whole process is more complicated, to interview you can take a paper based portfolio, a laptop, tablet, memory stick, you can use a host of different presentation software or log on to the Internet and go to a portfolio hosting site. I think it's become a bit confusing, especially for a graduate. The number one most important thing you can do for your portfolio, is create brilliant work to go in it. There's a reason for putting so much effort in to your projects, good work stands out. Everything you then do in your portfolio is window dressing to show your work off in the best possible way. So in episode 8 I use a demonstration project and show how I would prepare it for my portfolio, covering tips and tricks to best tell the story and maintain the flow of the story through the whole project. In a product design portfolio you show what you've done, but it demonstrates to an employer what you could do for them, your potential. I see lots of portfolios put together from the designers point of view, not the employers. You need change your mindset and think like an employer to show the interviewer what they need to see to make the decision you want them to make (hire you). I see lots of student portfolios full of basic mistakes. They don't flow well, they contain images that show poor decision making, images that are not juicy enough or don't set the scene well and portfolios where it's confusing what job the student is applying for, because they show a mixture of design work and art work or paintings. Some employers may like to see what else you can do, but there is also a danger that it can look like you haven't done much design work so had to pad out your online portfolio with paintings. if you don't have enough design projects, create some personal projects, do more design sketches, make physical or CAD models. If you also want to pursue a fine art career, create a separate portfolio that shows your art on a hosting site for artists. Unless you're going for a multidisciplinary position, If you try and make your portfolio do a bit of everything, it could end up not working brilliantly for anything. It's just advice, so please take away the things that you think are relevant to you and leave the rest behind. I hope you enjoy 'portfolios students of product design episode 8' More work available here: www.producttank.co.uk

Your Design Portfolio | How to Get Started in Design - Episode 3

08:32
Welcome to part 3 of a 5 part series about getting started as a designer. In this video, I talk about your design portfolio as a designer. It’s the number one way that you land clients, and something that requires some upkeep and work. I focus the video on how to start creating one, what projects to put in your portfolio, how to capitalize on it, and the importance of maintaining it. LIKE FREE STUFF? //////////// If you're interested in my thoughts and experience on the topic download my free ebook called "Make Your Portfolio Count" http://eepurl.com/djC53b Remember to Subscribe https://goo.gl/6vCw64 https://dribbble.com/ https://www.behance.net/ This series is geared towards people who have an interest in becoming professional designers but don’t know where to start. In this series, I’ll be covering topics such as: 1. What to Learn 2. Projects to Make 3. Portfolio Building 4. Landing Clients 5. Behavior This series is great if you are interested in design and is not limited to a certain facet of design. Whether you are interested in graphic design, web design, product design, logo design, etc... I cover basic steps that are distilled down in the hopes of helping people make less of the mistakes I made during the process. My goal in making this series is to answer the flood of questions I’ve received by email and twitter asking to get started? What projects to pursue, how to find clients, what to do if you have never had a paying client etc... I really hope you enjoy the series and watch it all the way through. I really tried to answer as many of those foundation questions as I could. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ////////// Website http://www.jesseshowalter.com - ////////// Subscribe: https://goo.gl/6vCw64 - ////////// Social Twitter: http://twitter.com/iamjesseshow Anchor: https://anchor.fm/iamjesseshow Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamjesseshow Medium: https://medium.com/@iamjesseshow - ////////// Equiptment Vlogging Camera - Panasonic G85 http://amzn.to/2EwumHn - Drone- DJI Spark http://amzn.to/2CpodH9

Innovation - Students of Product Design Episode1

12:49
This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. I have a lot more planned, so please be patient, stay tuned and follow me, so that you can be alerted to when the next video is launched. www.producttank.co.uk

Presentations - Students of Product Design Episode 7

22:28
Students of product design episode 7 covers how to give a concept design presentation to a small group, but the techniques can be used for presentations to much larger audiences and will also help with portfolio presentations. A concept design presentation doesn't begin when you sit down in front of the client with a set of drawings, or when you're preparing those drawings a week before. It starts the moment you first meet the client, you need to build relationships. One key to this is to just be interested in the client, people are interesting and with just about everything in life things always go far better if you show you're interested in them. I once saw a quote by Bill Nye, 'Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don't'. So before the presentation, keep talking to your main contact, keep them updated with progress, be interested in what they're up to and their suggestions, good design, good relationships, good business is about continuous communication. The presentation doesn't end once you have shown the last concepts either. You need to close the presentation, by managing expectations, letting the client know when you will need a response to hit the next deadline, helping the client reach an informed decision, agreeing the next stage etc. With any set of concepts, you'll have your favourite, often there's one that's stronger than the others, but any one of the designs a client chooses will be a good outcome, because they will be one of you or your teams designs, you can't loose, unless the client doesn't like any of them. If theres a design you're presenting that you really don't want them to choose, why is it in your presentation. Unless you have to present a series of concepts that a group of people came up with. Then there may be one you don't like, because we all like different things, but as long as it answers the brief, doesn't create confusion or you can't give a strong argument for leaving it out, then it should be included it in your presentation, to give the client breadth of choice. This is important to consider when you work in a team and also a good argument if it is your design that another member is trying to exclude. There are masses of useful links out there to help so as promised in the video, here are some links not necessarily specific to product design which I like and think will be useful: http://muledesign.com/2014/09/13-ways-designers-screw-up-client-presentations https://99designs.com/designer-blog/2013/03/19/5-tips-on-how-to-prepare-a-design-presentation/ http://www.richardbaird.co.uk/2012/05/10/the-designers-guide-to-presentation/ http://www.proedgeskills.com/Presentation_Skills_Articles/difficult_questions.htm This is a good link to how to deal with clients who want to feature creep: https://community.uservoice.com/blog/when-to-build-requested-feature/ In the video I briefly cover how to calm nerves and one relaxation technique that has really helped me, relaxing my shoulders. This is a good link to more relaxation techniques and ways to deal with nerves. http://www.inc.com/larry-kim/15-power-up-tips-to-make-you-a-better-presenter.html http://www.skillsyouneed.com/present/presentation-nerves.html http://lifehacker.com/how-to-calm-your-nerves-before-making-a-terrifying-spee-1677504967 Finally if you have specific questions not answered by a Google search, then you can always post a question on the forums at core77.com to get advice from industry professionals. I hope you enjoy 'Students of Product Design Episode 7' and it helps when you have to give a concept design presentation. More of my work is here: www.producttank.co.uk

7 Tips For Design Portfolio Presentation

04:25
The project I re-did is here: https://www.behance.net/gallery/61526915/SuperMealz-Branding-Site-Design Hey y’all! In this video I go over seven tips to help you improve the way you present your graphic design projects. Having an expert looking portfolio is one of the most effective tools we have as designers. It is important to present your portfolio well for getting freelance work as well as being hired as an in-house graphic designer. Tip 1: simplify the presentation of your project. Make sure that your actual design is the star of the show and it doesn’t get lost in an over-complicated presentation. Tip 2: Make your presentation in separate images. This allows you to make changes to your presentation easily later without having to exchange the entire portfolio image. Tip 3: Don’t go crazy with the amount of text in your presentation. Keep it between one sentence and two paragraphs. Tip 4: Include your sketches and pre-work. Sketches are particularly helpful if your project is an illustration or custom typography. Tip 5: Don’t use too many fonts. If you use one or two fonts in your design project, then make sure you stick to one of those in your portfolio presentation. Tip 6: Try not to repeat elements too often. If your project involves a logo design then there’s no need to paste the logo throughout your entire presentation. Tip 7: Don’t add artificial length to your design project. Try not to present the same thing in several different ways just to make your project seem more involved or complex. Okay guys, I really hope these tips help you improve how your graphic design projects are presented! My Art // Accepted RISD & PARSONS Portfolio

12:54
This video was meant to be filmed months ago.. but y'all know me.. I wanted to get this up because there aren't too many videos around where people showcase their full college accepted art portfolios- notably for RISD and Parsons School of Design. When I was an applicant, I found videos like this very helpful (at least for my anxiety at the time) so I do hope that prospective RISD and Parsons applicants find this informative! I applied to a total of 3 colleges in my senior year of high school, (Rhode Island School of Design, Otis School of Art and Design, and Parsons School of Design). All of the pieces featured in the video were sent in my college application, though some pieces are not shown and were only included in my Otis application. But my ENTIRE portfolio for RISD is up on here! Nothing left out. I didn't talk too much into the actual application process, and I didn't give as much advice as I wanted to. This video is more about showing my portfolio, and if needed, I can put another one up specifically talking about the HOW of applying to art schools. Any questions, just feel free to ask below. FREE UX Design Portfolio = http://www.laithwallace.com/the-ultimate-ux-portfolio-template/ The Ultimate UX Design Portfolio Template for UX Designers Create your own High-Quality portfolio with this 15-page template, Including Keynote and Powerpoint file + Instructions on how to use it. __________________________________________________________________ Product Designer vs UX Designer | The Top 3 Differences Explained In this video I breakdown the differences between a Product Designer and a UX Designer. Product design is the process of identifying a market opportunity, clearly defining the problem, developing a proper solution for that problem and validating the solution with real users. User experience (UX) design is the process of creating products that provide meaningful and relevant experiences to users. This involves the design of the entire process of acquiring and integrating the product, including aspects of branding, design, usability, and function. The main differences I speak about are 1. The Product Design specialises in the strategic direction of the project. 2. The Product design maintains communication with different departments and relays key information back to the Design team. 3. The Product Designer keeps things on budget for the project. Where the UX Designer focuses on experience for the end user and testing to make iterations to the project also. __________________________________________________________________ Download Your Free 25 Point UX Design Checklist - http://www.laithwallace.com/ux-checklist My Top Resources for UX Designers: http://www.laithwallace.com/resources/ UX Design Course Survey - Please fill this out https://goo.gl/forms/qbFRQURZewfUywGk1 This is my personal vlog from Laith Wallace I’m a UX Designer and Brand Strategist. How To Be an industrial Designer

Ever wonder what goes on inside of those industrial design studios? Well you've come to the right place. This is a video that myself and 5 other classmates made during our final year as ID students at Arizona State University. The purpose of this video is 1. to show how much fun us industrial designers have and 2. to explain to others what it is we do. Please note that we absolutely endorse the views and opinions expressed in this video (as comical as they may be, they are all very true). My hope with this series is that even if it's not your portfolio being reviewed you can get some useful insights that perhaps you could apply to your own design portfolio. How To Write A UX Case Study

09:13
How do you write a successful UX case study and what elements make up an effective UX case study? In this video I explain... ____ IF YOU LIKE MY CHANNEL, HERE ARE SOME NEXT STEPS... 1) HIRE ME: Want me to work with your startup or business? https://bit.ly/2AybHq8 2) FREE EBOOK: "How to start a career in UX" https://bit.ly/2xuYDDE 3) FREE PORTFOLIO REVIEW: Get my thoughts on your portfolio... https://bit.ly/2KuhpxM ____ 1 - Planning Before you start to think about the design or format, write the case study out as a word document. This will help you focus on the story you want to tell, without being distracted by the other details - formatting, design, imagery etc Create a rough template for your case studies to follow, this will help give them a consistency. Think of the template much like you would a story, with a beginning, a middle and an end. This might include: - Beginning: Providing the background of the project - Middle: Process (your approach, challenges, solutions) - The end: What was the end result? 2 - Context An effective case study let’s the reader know from the very beginning the context of the project. Giving context allows allows the reader the get a general picture of the project without having to read the entire case study. -What was the product or service being created? (project) -Who was it for? (client) -When? (date) -What was your role? -In what capacity did you work? (freelancer, in house, agency) 3 - Process While it’s useful to focus on the bigger picture of a project for context (the client), the main point of the case study should be to highlight your competencies as a UX designer The best way to demonstrate your competencies is to lead people through your process, Your process should highlight your systematic approach to problem solving as a designer, and also show how you function both as an individual and as part of team As an example, a case study that is focused on your approach might show the following: - Researching your audience - Creating research deliverables (user personas etc) - Wireframing a solution - Testing a solution - Iteration It’s also important to not leave gaps or leave things to people’s imagination. So for example, if you weren’t able to conduct user research properly (for whatever reason) at the beginning of a specific project, it’s better to highlight this, than just leave a gap. 4 - Readability & design The main focus of a case study should be the content, however, having said that, you want to make sure it is as easy as possible to read and understand for your user in a visual sense Make sure your typography is correct - so use a font for body copy that works for passages of text, and pay attention to line heights and lengths. Make sure you consider hierarchy and rhythm in terms of the spacing of type and graphic elements. Done properly, this will create a pleasing visual experience for the user. Break content collections into sections and within those sections, break your text into chunks so it’s easy to scan and jump around without getting lost. Remember, people on the web want to scan for content, not read a book. Much like the 1st point, aim to establish a visually recognizable template with your design and formatting. This repetition and consistency will make it easier for your reader to understand what’s going on sooner. 5 - Summarise A good case study doesn’t just end with the final deliverable. Try to summarise the outcomes of the project, both in terms of the bigger picture for the project team and client, but also for yourself as an individual. For example: - What’s happening next with the project/client? - How has your work impacted them? - What have you learnt? - Is there anything that could be improved in terms of your individual - - Approach or the overall project process?
