Dr Peter Honey presents at BETT Show 2014 on 'Helping people to become more effective learners.' In an ideal world people would be willing and able to: describe/share their learning quality assure their learning transfer/apply their learning learn pro-actively and re-actively improve their learning processes Unfortunately, as we all know, the world is not ideal and many people struggle with their learning or do it automatically without knowing how. Learning is a process which, like any other process, is capable of analysis, description and continuous improvement. This session will describe the stages in the learning cycle and explore the merits of making the learning process more explicit. How can we help people acquire learning skills that will equip them for lifelong learning in an increasingly complex, demanding world?

We learn, but we’re not taught how to learn. We open the book and hope through some kind of wizardry it might absorb into our brain. Once we are aware of our learning style we can adjust our study techniques to make understanding and memorising new information easier and quicker. Meaning we’ll spend less time with our head on the textbook attempting to revise through osmosis! The quiz helps us work out whether we're primarily a visual kinaesthetic or audio. learner, with study tips for each one. PLUS, my top tip for making sure you NEVER forget things.

An activity module, Learning Styles Test (LSTest), has been contributed by (Rubio Reyes, 2009) to Moodle which adapts the Honey and Mumford learning style test into an activity module in Moodle which can be freely adapted or implemented by Moodle users. As part of PhD research by Kerri McCusker (irrek.com) this learner style test has since been configured and adapted into a Moodle installation. Following completion of the learning style test, a user is automatically directed to a course specifically created to support each learner style. This acts as a primary learner style identifier, with a more intelligent and accurate identifier being developed through educational data mining as a secondary identifier.

Stephanie discusses what learning styles are, how they impact a students ability to learn and why it is important for faculty to understand the learning styles of your students. In her teaching she exposes students to many different styles and has them reflect on each to determine which ones work best for them. She discusses the impact faculty bias toward the learning style in which they personally were successful can have on the students and encourages faculty to try teaching in a learning style that differs from their preferred one. She encourages the students and other instructors to explore and take risks with their teaching. Stephanie has found that if the learning is planned and explicitly explained to the students as part of the learning objectives for the course it is more readily accepted by the students. One teaching approach that she describes in detail is mobile public post draft outlining. Stephanie is joined by Nancy Wozniak, a learning architect within the TLT Faculty Center, who discusses why it is important that faculty and students understand their own preferred learning style. She discusses various tools that faculty can used to assess their styles.

This video is about ThinkPen Thursday - an adaption of the Thinking Thursday theme. Today's topic is "Learning Styles" - in the particular flavour that is Honey and Mumford. Are you dominantly a Reflector? What percentage of your energy is invested in being an Activist? Do you commit yourself to being a Theorist? Or is it mainly about being a Pragmatist, and making it relevant to business? You can discover your own unique mix of the four styles here: https://lnkd.in/gQ3UZDb It's a great and rapid assessment that gives you a superb visual output. PLEASE SHARE YOUR RESULT IN THE COMMENTS (was that LOUD enough?) However, my point is that whilst you may and will have a preference, that preference won't serve you well if you want to grow, to evolve, to develop. What you'll need to do is develop the capacity to access all four styles for a balanced learning experience. This is where my ThinkPen pen and methodology comes in. Using the four colours to represent the four styles thus: Black - Theorist Blue - Reflector Green - Activist, and Red - Pragmatist you can quiz yourself so that you cover all four bases. Use your ThinkPen to map out equal time and attention using all four styles. Let me know your results in the comments. Just thought I'd say that again... 'cos few people TAKE ACTION! The video is under licence from https://lnkd.in/gvP2J5W music? We're trying to source.
