Sea level rise is so much more than melting ice
While researching climate change, we heard something confusing: the sea level in New York City is rising about one and a half times faster than the global average. We couldn’t figure out what that meant. Isn’t the sea level...flat? So we called up an expert and went down the rabbit hole. And, we did our best to visualize her truly bizarre answers with animations, dioramas, and a lot of melting ice. Rising sea levels will put U.S. homes at risk in near future
Rising sea levels will put U.S. homes at risk in the near future, according to a study done by the Union of Concerned Scientists. It says more than 310,000 existing homes are projected to be at risk of flooding every two weeks by 2045. The National visited one coastal community to see how it's dealing with the problem. Rising Seas Are Swallowing This North American Island | National Geographic
Lennox Island is a small but culturally rich coastal community in Prince Edward Island, Canada, that is seeing the negative impact of climate change and sea-level rise. Home to Mi'kmaq (pronounced MIG-maw) First Nations people, the island faces flooding and land erosion that threaten both homes and the roads that connect the residents to the mainland. Also at risk are several archaeological sites that hold vital artifacts from the Mi'kmaq's aboriginal ancestors. The longtime residents of Lennox Island are doing their best to mitigate the effects of climate change but fear that eventually they'll lose their houses to the rising waters. How Earth Would Look If All The Ice Melted
We learned last year that many of the effects of climate change are irreversible. Sea levels have been rising at a greater rate year after year, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates they could rise by another meter or more by the end of this century. As National Geographic showed us in 2013, sea levels would rise by 216 feet if all the land ice on the planet were to melt. This would dramatically reshape the continents and drown many of the world's major cities. How Coastal Communities Are Already Retreating from Rising Seas
When it comes to the unsustainable development of the American coastline, New Jersey owns the honor of being the first and worst. But one town in the state is experimenting with moving a cluster of people out of harm’s way and turning the newly open land into a flood buffer to protect the rest of the community. Our Rising Oceans (VICE on HBO: Season 3, Episode 1)
Our oceans are rising. With human use of hydrocarbons skyrocketing, waters around the globe are getting hotter and, now, this warm sub-surface water is washing into Antarctica’s massive western glaciers causing the glaciers to retreat and break off. Antarctica holds 90% of the world’s ice and 70% of its freshwater, so if even a small fraction of the ice sheet in Antarctica melts, the resulting sea level rise will completely remap the world as we know it – and it is already happening. In the last decade, some of the most significant glaciers here have tripled their melt rate. VICE founder Shane Smith travels to the bottom of the world to investigate the instability of the West Antarctic ice sheet and to see first hand how the continent is melting -- and VICE follows the rising oceans to Bangladesh for a glimpse into the world's underwater future. From the UN Climate conference to the People's Climate March to the forces that deny the science of global climate change, this special extended episode covers all sides of the issue and all corners of the globe, ending with a special interview with Vice President Joe Biden. Major Sea Level Rise in Near Future | Jason Briner | TEDxBuffalo
If you want to know what the changing climate is doing to the earth, ask someone who's been there. Jason Briner has been above the Arctic Circle more than 35 times. He takes the big topic of global warming and shows you what it's doing to a very important place in this talk. Jason P. Briner is an Associate Professor of Geology at the University at Buffalo. Briner’s research expertise lies in glaciers and climate, specifically in Arctic regions. His passion for Arctic environs obviously explains why, in 2005, Briner moved to Buffalo, NY. Briner has been above the Arctic Circle more than 35 times for his research, in the remote corners of Alaska, Arctic Canada, Greenland and Norway. Scientists discover sea temperatures rising faster than previously thought | ITV News
Scientists have discovered that sea temperatures are rising much faster than previously thought. Ocean heat is a key indicator of global warming and a new system for measuring heat has revealed that the old system was out by about 40%. Scientists behind the study predict that by the end of the century, sea temperature will rise by 0.78 degrees Celsius. Despite it sounding like a small difference - it can have a devastating effect. It is believed hurricanes, storms and flooding would occur with more frequency. Why Are Sea Levels Rising at Different Rates? | Ars Technica
Sea levels are rising due to global warming, and part of the reason for this is ice on land is melting and flowing into the seas. Tide gauges can measure the rising sea level, but different tide gauges show the sea level is rising at different rates in different places. Why is this? This footage was captured during a storm and people i just don't know what to make of it... when i first watched this footage it got me thinking of the Leviathan which is a sea monster referenced in the Hebrew Bible in the Book of Job, Psalms, and Isaiah. The Leviathan of the Book of Job is a reflection of the older Canaanite Lotan, a primeval monster defeated by the god Hadad.
How much is sea level rising? Climate Change Impact on Mumbai & Kolkata
Please Like, Share and Subscribe our channel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Climate Change: Vital Signs of the Planet: Sea Level the same all over the world? The news that is available to the people is mostly rumor, and you also know that there are no feet of rumor, that is why it spreads very fast. But global warming is such a thing which we can do to sweat. Do not know if you will ever notice or not. Miami is the city and it used to be all around this island. But this was the red plate which was also land on the same, but due to global warming, the water level of the sea came up so much, that is, according to the report, 20 feet water has come up there. So this is not just about here, but on every seafront of the world there is something like this on our earth. If India speaks of the UN, by 2050, more than 4 million people in India are at risk. Especially the people of Mumbai and Kolkata city. Together, Bangladesh and China will be the same. The Dhaka-Dhaka and Shanghai city of China will also be covered. Science also has indicated about the destruction of the Earth. That day is not far away when the Earth's dust will start from the 2 million 24 thousand miles of the earth with a moat in the sea. Because the melting snow of the Pole region has caused trouble to emerge. If you remember, a few weeks ago, a 5800 sq. Km large frost had broken apart in Antarctica. This is not a small thick iceberg, this iceberg is 4 times bigger than the heart of India. Its estimated weight is more than 1000 million tonnes. Due to the separation from Antarctica, this iceberg will now roam the ocean and there will be a danger for ships coming out there. NASA's Aqua Moody's Satellite has been monitoring the iceberg for a long time. Because in Antarctica, the crack was seen in the ice some time ago. Which means that at any place, a big piece of ice will be separated from Antarctica. Increasing temperature has caused an increase in the incidence of ice fragmentation in Antarctica. In the year 2000, ice fragment of 11000 square kilometers was separated, which was the biggest event till date. His name was A-68. If the look of the threat was seen in the iceberg, the Titanic ship collided with such a piece of ice and was devastated. Now the iceberg that breaks apart, keeps roaming in the water of the sea, and by changing its place again and again it will melt. From which the fragment of a big ice melt will come from the sea level of the countries near the equator. And many small island insides in the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean will go to Dubai. Scientists in the North Antarctica research team say that in the state of the big ice only five big ice pieces remain. From that place called "Markham Ice Shield" was separated from the island of Ellesmere in August. In the last decade, due to the rest of the Earth, Antarctica has increased the temperature by a lot of speed, which is a huge problem. Because people have developed indiscriminate development, they have created problems for the earth itself. And if all the pigs in the Dhruv state get piggy in one go, then the entire sea level of the world will increase to 60 ft and also the coastal cities will be submerged in the water. By 2050, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia and the Philippines have the potential to increase the sea level, and all of them are 5 million 80 million, that is why many people are at risk. But more than that, most of the government in the world is ignoring this issue. As the time passes, the earth will continue to dwindle, and the sea will continue to grow. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music by : Fanfare for Space by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...) Miami's Real Estate Market is Benefiting from Rising Sea Levels (HBO)
The latest reports from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predict that sea levels are likely to rise almost three feet by the end of the century. And in South Florida, sea level rise and climate change are already having an effect on roads and drinking water. But looking at Miami Beach’s real estate market, you wouldn’t know that the city is potentially facing a half a trillion dollars in flood damage. Shane Smith met with two of Miami beach’s top real estate brokers, Jill Hertzberg and Jill Eber, to find out what’s protecting the market. He also speaks with an insurance expert from Wharton who explains how the city’s public funds come predominantly from real estate taxes — meaning that putting more property at risk is also the very thing helping Miami deal with rising seas.
