If you know your costs are X for your product or service, you got to charge more than that. You don't want to be losing money per sale. Everyone's like, oh my god I'm going to beat my competitors. I'm going to take the Jeff Bezos route and not worry about margins. Well, the reality is, unless you have a big pool of money to blow, you can't do that. You need to make sure it's profitable, including shipping, services, returns, other things like customer service, you need to take everything into account into your price, not just how much it costs for your product or service, but also all the other things like your office space. Once you include all of those things to run your business you'll figure out what you need to sell your product or service for, so you can make a profit. You're not in business just for charity. You need to make a profit and there's nothing wrong with that. The second thing you need to do is understand your target customers. What are your target customers looking for? How do they perceive value when they look at the price? A good example of this is a company called Diamond Foundry. They have figured out how to make diamonds above land. They match all the characteristics of a diamond that you find in the earth and there's really no difference from it. But they found they can do it much cheaper, by making it above land and created these machines to create the exact same composition as it does in the earth, to make a diamond. And when they had really cheap, affordable prices, they found that their sales weren't doing well. Can you guess why? It's because, everyone's like, oh this isn't the same thing, it's too cheap. So the moment they increased their prices, people like, oh wow, the quality of this must be amazing. Sure we'll buy it. There's no difference in the product, but people had the perceived value in their space, that higher price means better diamond. You need to look at your space. It could be that a cheaper price means more sales. Or it could be, cheaper price means fewer sales, because the perceived value isn't there. The third pricing strategy I have for you is anchoring. There's a lot of companies that'll show the initial price of let's say $37 and you may get X, Y and Z, but for $47 you'll get X, Y and Z and also 1, 2 and 3 and also A, B and C, just for $10 more. By using anchoring you'll find that very few people will choose a lower option, which you don't want them to choose, but the majority of the people use the higher option because you're getting so much more value for just a little bit more money. And that'll increase your profitability, especially if those other things that you're adding in don't cost you much at all. The fourth thing I want you to do is A/B test. Using tools like Crazyegg, you can A/B test your pricing, not only to maximize your sales, but also to maximize your profitability. Sometimes getting fewer sales means more profit. Sometimes getting more sales means more profit. The following video breaks down how a manufacturer should come up with a price for industrial finished goods. First, the company must account for its material costs and apply a 5 percent indirect cost to that portion of the manufacturer's price sheet. This 5 percent is meant to offset overruns in production and or additional costs of financing inventory and material purchases. Second, the company must account for its labor relative to each operation performed to turn a raw material into a finished good. The calculation involves defining the operation and applying the labor cost to both the setup time in manufacturing and the actual run time. Third, all labor costs are added in order to come up with a complete total for all the costs of manufacturing a given product. Those costs are then followed up by the company's overhead, which is calculated by taking its indirect expenses divided by its direct expenses. Indirect expenses are those expenses that are in addition to the the costs needed to produce a part. Direct expenses are exactly that. These include the costs involved or expenses involved in manufacturing the part. Finally, the company adds its mark-up in order to secure a profit on the sale. Profit is critical because it helps to fund the company's pursuit of new product introductions and secure its long-term future. The Best Pricing Strategy For New Products - How To Price Startups And New Services

Did you know that it is much more common for Australian businesses to undercharge their customers for new consumer products than overcharge them? That’s right, the majority of Australian businesses believe (either consciously or subconsciously) that the best pricing strategy for new products is to go low on price to penetrate the market and undersell the value of a new offer - even if a new product is highly valuable to customers. We estimate that 80% if not 90% of Australian retailers are setting their new product prices too low. Sometimes the prices for new products are so low that their losing money on each sale — the opposite of the best pricing strategy for new products. Companies like: Masters, Harvey Norman, Myer, JB Hi-Fi are all included here; and even if you can believe it, almighty Amazon – who we all know use Everyday Low Pricing as their best pricing strategy for new products to gain market share and share of wallet.   Button But what many people don’t realise about Big Scary Amazon, is that, for the first 14 years in operation, they were consistently loss-making. That’s right: they made no money. Which means following Amazon’s lead may not be the best pricing strategy for new products – unless of course like Amazon, you’re also backed by bountiful funding, wealthy investors and powerful institutions. What's the best pricing strategy for new products?  But if you, like me, are surprised by the extent of under-charging in Australia, you’ll be even more surprised to find that most of these businesses don’t even realise they’re excessively under-charging for new products in the first place. That’s right; most Australian businesses are blissfully unaware that their pricing strategy is light years away from the best pricing strategy for new products – and that they've got a serious pricing problem. We estimate that only 10% of Australian businesses have any real clue about how to price properly. By this I mean can move beyond cost plus or competitive based pricing and implement more expansive pricing strategies for new products such as value-based pricing, customer-focused pricing, and dynamic pricing. Which businesses do you think have the best pricing strategy for new products in Australia? You’ve guessed it: The Banks, Telcos, Supermarkets, Fuel, Energy companies – i.e., businesses that have a long history of inelastic demand for their products tend to have the ‘best’ pricing strategy for new products – that is, if the ‘best’ is determined by their profitability and share price alone. But do they have the ‘best’ pricing strategy for new products or are just really fortunate to have dominated a valuable industry without facing much price competition or change? Do you think Banks, Telcos set fair and profitable prices? Prices that customers are willing to pay for (not prices that customer has to pay because there’s no choice) and prices that represent value for the business and their customers (lowers their costs and increase their revenues)  – the definition of the best pricing strategy for new products. Difficult to say really because most of these businesses (Banks, Telcos, Supermarkets), have had very little competition in their respective markets compared to most other businesses in Australia. All the businesses that do consistently set high and profitable prices for new products tend to be the top of their respective industries and for many years now. They also share a  lot in common:  There are not many players in these industries. Pricing structures and offers are pretty standard. Customers are restricted on choice. There's a lot of regulatory pressure on pricing. Which means when there is inelastic demand in Australia, prices tend to be high – which isn’t such a surprise. But what is a surprise is that not only are price high, they are excessively high  - almost to the point that new product pricing is extremely close to, if not breaking the price ceiling. What impact will pricing through the ceiling have on leading businesses in Australia like, Telcos, Banks, and Supermarkets? Businesses with a long history of uninterrupted inelastic demand and limited competition (fuels, cigarettes, energy, Australian Supermarkets) are now under pricing pressure for the first time. Customers want more value for their money and are demanding more. Banking At the moment, Fintech is moving into the transactional banking space. They're providing customer-focused solutions to improve payments and wallets (a traditionally safe and stable area for the banks for many years now). Banks are responding by improving their IT systems and centralising transactions to make it easier for customers to make payments. But there's still a lot of charges and red tape. Customers are complaining they're are not getting the advice they need from the big four banks to decrease leverage.

Okay, so I’m gonna be upfront with you. I really don’t read a lot of marketing books. Sure, I devoured all the classics. Still, for the life of me I couldn’t name the latest and greatest marketing and advertising book topping the best-seller list. But you’re a marketing Wizard, you say. How can this be? Oh, no! I’ve been exposed as a fraud. I dunno. Maybe it’s the non-conformist in me. More likely than not, it’s because I want to know the root of an idea’s origins. I want to know WHY something works. So I’ve developed my persuasive prowess by studying neurology, psychology, biology, and the arts. That’s probably how I stumbled upon a little-known research book titled, Diffusion of Innovations by Everette M. Rogers. It’s a book every Marketing Wizard should read. And it definitely ranks as a classic. Diffusion of Innovations: http://www.amazon.com/Diffusion-Innovations-5th-Everett-Rogers/dp/0743222091/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1408307729&sr=1-1&keywords=diffusion+of+innovations Now, don’t get your undies in a bunch about the “innovations” part of the title. Yes, when Roger’s speaks of innovations, he’s referring to new products or services being introduced to the marketplace. But, the concepts found in his book provides any Marketing Wizard with a rock-solid blueprint for persuading customers to buy from you—even if what you’re selling has been around longer than Jerry Lewis. Is he still alive? Just look at all the dog-eared pages and highlights I made. Lots of good marketing mojo in this book for sure. Like this: “In developing a favorable or unfavorable attitude toward an innovation, an individual may mentally apply the new idea to his or her present or anticipated future situation before deciding whether or not to try it,” says Rogers. “This vicarious trial involves the ability to think hypothetically and counterfactually and to project into the future: What if I adopt this innovation? Forward planning is involved at the persuasion stage.” Helping your customers to imagine doing the thing that you want them to do. That’s what Rogers is talking about here. And that’s what you’re trying to make happen with your marketing as well. So let’s get knee deep into the five factors that influence the spread of new ideas and lead to widespread adoption: Number One: Relative Advantage - the degree to which an innovation is perceived to be better than the product or service it supersedes. Naturally, the greater the perceived relative advantage of an innovation, the more rapid its rate of adoption will be. Your goal here is to frame the buying conversation to favor you. Since we know that customers naturally contrast and compare the differences among their available options, you must make an apples-to-oranges comparison—rising above the competition to become the obvious choice. Now, logical, reason why marketing is important … but don’t forget to speak to your customer’s emotions. Tap into an emotional benefit that drives your customer’s desire—one that your customer is willing to pay for. Marketing and advertising that speaks to a dominant, driving emotion is much more powerful and persuasive than copy that makes a logical argument alone. Number Two: Compatibility - the degree to which an innovation is perceived to be consistent with existing values, past experiences and the needs of potential adopters. Products and services that are deemed less compatible or incompatible with the norms of a social system will not be adopted as rapidly as those that are. Please don’t expect your customers to adopt a new belief system. You can’t please all. Remember, only weasel brands try’n snuggle up to every customer in the marketplace. So find a group of customers with a social system that your products and services are compatible with. Number Three: Complexity - the degree to which which an innovation is perceived to be difficult to understand and use. Simplicity is a better way to think about this. Marketers have known for awhile now that uncertainty is the costly side-effect of overwhelming your customers with too much choice. Generally speaking, the more options customers have at their fingertips, the more indecisive they’ll become. And complexity often creates the desire for simplicity. And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And these 2 secrets are… 1) Sales Velocity 2) Conversions These are the 2 key factors the Amazon algorithm uses when choosing which products will sit at the top of their search results (the search engine accounts for 90% of sales on Amazon). Here is what you need to do to launch your first Amazon FBA product and make it a home-run success (even if it’s your first product): You need to match (or ideally improve on) the sales velocity & conversions of your top competitor for 2 weeks. If you do this… then your item will soar to the top of the search results - and YOU’LL start making all of the organic sales for your product! Hack #1 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Use product giveaways Product giveaways for your Amazon FBA private label product are one of the most powerful strategies at your disposal for massively increasing your sales velocity & conversions. You can’t give products away for free but you can give people a heavily discounted coupon that lets them buy it for just 99 cents, which means you are basically giving it away for free. And this is simple: Sign up for a service like JumpSend or ZonBlast. These services have a huge membership base of people that are keen to purchase heavily discounted items on Amazon. They will then distribute your coupon to it’s members. Not only will this drastically increase your sales, but the conversions will be high: You can expect around 50%. Hack #2 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Lower the price If your item starts getting sales (product giveaways are of course a great way to do this) and traction, you can then attract more sales from simply lowering the price below your competition for a week or two. If your product is already ranked in the top few results and you want to climb to the top, this strategy alone can be enough. Hack #3 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Use SuperURLs When someone clicks on your product listing after finding it using the Amazon search engine, they enter using a SuperURL: It’s a URL containing tracking information that tells the Amazon algorithm that they arrived at your listing through finding it using the search engine. You can give people this URL instead of your usual product URL to trick the algorithm into thinking that people found (and bought your item) through finding it using the search engine. Be aware though, this is a controversial method. Experts like Daniel recommend only pushing through a maximum of 20% of your sales this way. Hack #4 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Use paid advertising You can place paid ads in the Amazon search engine for your item, targeting specific keywords. When someone buys a product through clicking on it, not only will this increase your sales velocity - but it’ll help your product rank organically for that keyword as well. Hack #5 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Increase the conversions on your listing & get reviews It’s not enough to get the initial sales & conversions from drastically lowering your price: You need to have a high-converting listing so that when you reach the top of the search results you’ll keep making more sales than your competitor, otherwise the Amazon algorithm will drop you in the results. Here are some tips for increasing your conversions on your listing: * Have the maximum number of HD photos that are big enough the customer can zoom in on them. * Have a keyword rich product title. * Have multiple bullet points with excellent copy. * Have a descriptive product description that has photos included in it. Be sure to email and follow up with your customers, asking them to leave an honest review. If you do this, you can increase the rate of people leaving a review to as high as 10-15% (compared to less than 5%). Hack #6 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Use Amazon Marketing Services Amazon Market Services (AMS) is an advertising platform that you need to be specially approved for. When you are approved it lets you advertise on lots of pages on Amazon, such as your competitor’s pages. Because it requires pre-approval, most of your competition won’t be using it. So you can use this to place ads in larger amounts than 99% of your competitors and outsell them.

To do that, click ‘set product image’ on your products page and then add your ‘product image’ Once you’ve added your product image, just click ‘publish’, to add your variable product. Next, if you want to customize your variation by adding specific price or image - 06:10 Just go back to products page and click ‘Variations’ , Now choose the variation which you want and then add specific price or image to a particular variation . Next, let's see how to add another set of variation to the same product. To do that, Again you need to create a new set of attributes and then add it to the same product. Once you’ve added, Next you need to delete all the previous set of variations added to your product. To do that, Just click variations in your products page and click dropdown to select ‘delete all variations’. Once you’ve deleted the previous set of variations, Now you need to add a new set of variations by using all the attributes. To do that, again click dropdown and select ‘Create variations from all attributes’. And once you’ve created another set of variations, just click ‘publish’ to make the changes. Now another set of variations will be added to your product. Next, if you want to display your product variations in a button style instead of default drop-down style - 13:14 You need to add a new feature called ‘swatches’ to your product. To add variation swatches to your product we need to do 3 steps. Step 1: Install a plugin called Variation swatches in WordPress To install a plugin, just go to your dashboard and go to plugins and click ‘add new’ Now search for a plugin called ‘variation swatches’, and once you’ve got the plugin just click install and then activate.
