Roche Bobois launches the fifth edition of its Design Awards competition in partnership with the School of Constructed Environments (http://newschool.edu/parsons/sce) at Parsons School of Design (http://newschool.edu/parsons), giving students the opportunity to collaborate with the renowned international luxury furniture brand to design and prototype functional, full-scale seating devices that have the potential to be manufactured and brought to market. Driven by the theme “Seating for Eating,” students in Parsons’ MFA Industrial Design (http://newschool.edu/parsons/mfa-industrial-design) and BFA Product Design (http://newschool.edu/parsons/product-design) programs will create 16 design proposals, one of which will be chosen by Roche Bobois to present at its annual design review for consideration for production. The “Cairn” stone chair designed by Weiran Chen and George Plionis of Parsons’ MFA Industrial Design program won first place alongside the “Plus One” extendable chair designed by Lorraine Chen and Po Yuan Wang of Parsons’ BFA Product Design program. Second place was awarded to Liujingzi Jiang and Lee Chi-Hao of Parsons’ MFA Industrial Design program for the “Asy” yellow asymmetrical chair. Rather than award first through third place as originally planned, the judges decided on two first place winners as each of the projects best addressed different aspects of the original brief and key judging criteria. Christiaan Maats is a designer and entrepreneur who challenges the way we look at product design. Going beyond form and function he shows us how products carry deeper layers of meaning and how those layers can connect us to a bigger reality. In this Talk, Christiaan Maats explains how meaningful products can embody the change we want to see in the world and sheds light on his own vision of a circular society that integrates industrial society with its natural roots. Christiaan Maats was born and raised in Groningen, though he studied Industrial Design Engineering at Technical University in Delft. His keen interest in the psychology behind product- and brand experience took him to Sydney, Australia where he conducted a case study titled “Storytelling through Product Design”. Good product design is good storytelling, according to Christiaan. His creation of the world’s first biodegradable shoes that bloom is a perfect example of his philosophy. Christiaan considers himself a practical idealist. He is driven by his passion for innovation and creating products and brands that inspire a better future by making you smile, think and wonder. His refreshing ideas on sustainable innovation disrupt the status quo. Christiaan's diverse background and enthusiasm are great ingredients for an inspiring TEDx Talk that focuses on the society of the future and how to get there. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Contrived one-off ideas do not survive long on the market of good design. Only designs that are thought-out to the last detail from the start will endure. Such is our ever-expanding 10° concept, which has accumulated a number of domestic and foreign awards for original design. All the elements of the 10° concept form a logical whole and their growing range makes them the ideal choice for both fans of classic shapes whose bathroom does not require asymmetrical solutions and for those with specific requirements for their interior, where asymmetry helps them save space. The number 10 indicates the exact number of degrees by which we rotated or tilted certain products in the 10° concept to make everyday use of the bathroom easier and more pleasant. The ingeniously simple solution builds on the initial idea of rotating a classic bath by 10°. This allows it to offer more storage space and provides plentiful shoulder space for showering when fitted with a bath shower screen. Rotation or tilting by 10° has since then expanded to other products that now fall within the 10° concept. You can thus enjoy the benefits of the feature on a corner washbasin, on water taps or on a unique asymmetrical shower enclosure. Proponents of more traditional shapes can choose from a rectangular bath, square or rectangular shower enclosures or rectangular washbasin. All the elements of the 10° concept are linked by unified style, high-quality materials and the authorial signature of our experienced Czech designer.

The concept behind this pair of rings is the joining together of hearts. The inter-locking rings are a visual image of a "heart to heart" wish bonding together two imperfect human beings. Each ring is notched, representing missing elements of each person, fitting together in a symbol of love and completeness. This ingenuity and artistic inspiration is based in traditional Japanese architecture and joinery employed throughout history, wherein joints were designed to eliminate all unnecessary materials such as screws, nails, or glue.

The products that designers help create are the biggest contributors to climate change, according to research presented at our Good Design for a Bad World talks at Dutch Design Week last month. The claim came from designer Babette Porcelijn, who has published a book that explores the factors driving climate change and offering potential solutions to the problem. "I made an impact top ten," said Porcelijn, presenting a graph of the ten biggest causes of climate change. "Number one is products. It's stuff. I'm an industrial designer so I was really educated to make these things. But it has the number one impact." Electronic products such as mobile phones and computers are among the biggest contributors, she said, adding that her list contains more surprises, with animal farming coming second. "Number two is meat," she said. "Then comes houses, then comes the car." The findings are contained in her book, De Verborgen Impact (Hidden Impact), which explores the hidden impact of human activities on earth's climate, which most people are unaware of.
