How product design can change the world | Christiaan Maats | TEDxUniversityofGroningen
Christiaan Maats is a designer and entrepreneur who challenges the way we look at product design. Going beyond form and function he shows us how products carry deeper layers of meaning and how those layers can connect us to a bigger reality. In this Talk, Christiaan Maats explains how meaningful products can embody the change we want to see in the world and sheds light on his own vision of a circular society that integrates industrial society with its natural roots. Christiaan Maats was born and raised in Groningen, though he studied Industrial Design Engineering at Technical University in Delft. His keen interest in the psychology behind product- and brand experience took him to Sydney, Australia where he conducted a case study titled “Storytelling through Product Design”. Good product design is good storytelling, according to Christiaan. His creation of the world’s first biodegradable shoes that bloom is a perfect example of his philosophy. Christiaan considers himself a practical idealist. He is driven by his passion for innovation and creating products and brands that inspire a better future by making you smile, think and wonder. His refreshing ideas on sustainable innovation disrupt the status quo. Christiaan's diverse background and enthusiasm are great ingredients for an inspiring TEDx Talk that focuses on the society of the future and how to get there. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Innovation - Students of Product Design Episode1
This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. I have a lot more planned, so please be patient, stay tuned and follow me, so that you can be alerted to when the next video is launched. www.producttank.co.uk

Rookie Awards - Product Design Category
Entrants will typically come from a Product Design or Industrial Design background. They will likely have experience with AutoCAD style programs which offer a more precise building platform with a strong focus on real-world physics and restraints. Important Notes The most important step is to share your process. Just are not purely interested in final renders. They want to see the thought process and how you solved your design problem. All 3D content must be targeted towards product design and use CAD software. This is not a category for people with nice Zbrush models of cars. Judges are interested in seeing great product visualisations. So make sure to share really polished final renders and compliment these with sketches and concept art. https://www.therookies.co Entries open March 7th 2019 - May 31st 2019.

LiuGong 4180D awarded Red Dot Award 2019 for Product Design
LiuGong has won an award in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2019. LiuGong’s motor grader 4180D received the Red Dot, which the renowned jury only awards to products that feature an outstanding design. * A completely new machine as well as the embodiment of LiuGong’s design DNA The new 4180D motor grader is a completely new machine and is the embodiment of LiuGong’s design DNA. The UK based Industrial Design team worked in close co-operation with customers and operators to rethink the traditional grader. According to Gary Major, Director of LiuGong’s Industrial Design, “visibility, operator comfort and ergonomics were quickly identified as the key areas of focus along with blade articulation and maneuverability.” The resulting machine boasts 324° panoramic visibility owing to a newly designed 5 post cab with a single C-pillar, a completely new cab interior which sets the benchmark for comfort and efficiency. New impact-resistant materials have also been introduced to provide better weight distribution and increased recyclability. In addition, access for routine maintenance has also been improved to reduce downtime. Design quality is the common factor for award-winning products “I would like to congratulate the laureates sincerely on their wonderful success. The fact that their products were able to satisfy the strict criteria of the jury bears testimony to their award-winning design quality. The laureates are thus setting key trends in the design industry and are showing where future directions may lead,” said Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot, in reference to the winners. * Experience and expertise get straight to the point The Red Dot Award: Product Design is one of the world’s largest design competitions. In 2019, designers and manufacturers from 55 countries entered more than 5,500 products in the competition. The international jury comprises experienced experts from different disciplines and has been convening for more than 60 years in order to select the year’s best designs. During an adjudication process that spans several days, they try out the products, discuss them and ultimately reach a well-founded decision regarding the design quality of the entries. True to the motto “In search of good design and innovation”, their assessment focuses on criteria such as the level of innovation, functionality, formal quality, longevity and ergonomics. * Success to be celebrated at the award ceremony On 8 July 2019, LiuGong will celebrate its success during the award ceremony. The international design scene will gather in Essen’s Aalto-Theater as part of the Red Dot Gala. iF product design award 2014 Wedding Ring awaseru
The concept behind this pair of rings is the joining together of hearts. The inter-locking rings are a visual image of a "heart to heart" wish bonding together two imperfect human beings. Each ring is notched, representing missing elements of each person, fitting together in a symbol of love and completeness. This ingenuity and artistic inspiration is based in traditional Japanese architecture and joinery employed throughout history, wherein joints were designed to eliminate all unnecessary materials such as screws, nails, or glue.

10° concept - *Red Dot & iF DESIGN AWARD
Contrived one-off ideas do not survive long on the market of good design. Only designs that are thought-out to the last detail from the start will endure. Such is our ever-expanding 10° concept, which has accumulated a number of domestic and foreign awards for original design. All the elements of the 10° concept form a logical whole and their growing range makes them the ideal choice for both fans of classic shapes whose bathroom does not require asymmetrical solutions and for those with specific requirements for their interior, where asymmetry helps them save space. The number 10 indicates the exact number of degrees by which we rotated or tilted certain products in the 10° concept to make everyday use of the bathroom easier and more pleasant. The ingeniously simple solution builds on the initial idea of rotating a classic bath by 10°. This allows it to offer more storage space and provides plentiful shoulder space for showering when fitted with a bath shower screen. Rotation or tilting by 10° has since then expanded to other products that now fall within the 10° concept. You can thus enjoy the benefits of the feature on a corner washbasin, on water taps or on a unique asymmetrical shower enclosure. Proponents of more traditional shapes can choose from a rectangular bath, square or rectangular shower enclosures or rectangular washbasin. All the elements of the 10° concept are linked by unified style, high-quality materials and the authorial signature of our experienced Czech designer.
