Muay Thai is a combat sport / martial art from Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. Muay Thai translated means "Thai Boxing". Muay Thai is also known as "the art of eight limbs" because it is characterized by the combined use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, thus using eight "points of contact", as opposed to "two points" (fists) in boxing and "four points" (hands and feet) used in other more regulated combat sports, such as karate, Tae Kwon Do, and American Kickboxing.
Muay Thai became widespread internationally in the twentieth century, when its boxers defeated notable practitioners of other martial arts in full contact kickboxing bouts. Like most competitive full contact fighting sports, Muay Thai focuses heavily on physical conditioning. Because of the level of fitness and toughness required for ring competition, traditional Muay Thai training, by designed is physically and mentally demanding. Muay Thai training regimens include some of the following conditioning exercises; running, jumping rope, shadow boxing, body weight exercises, medicine ball exercises and some functional weight training. In addition to physical exercise Thai fighters train with coaches on Thai Pads, focus mitts, heavy bags, and sparring. "If you want to fight like a Thai, you have to train like a Thai" - Coach Carlos Lopez.
