In this video, I walk you through the 5 key principles to building muscle over 50, so use these principles along with our free resources to get started today! *Use Compound Exercises (1:25) The 5 key exercises to include in the best workouts for men over 50 are Squats, Deadlifts, Rows, Bench Press, and Military press. You may have done these exercises before, but here at the Fit Father Project, we show you how to tweak them to keep them safe for aging bodies. Incorporating these exercises into workouts for men over 50 can be done in a couple of ways. Firstly, you could do a full body workout that has you completing all 5 exercises 2-3 times per week, just like we show you in our free video (https://fitfatherproject.com/get-free-muscle-workout). You could also do them as an upper/lower body split, where you would do Bench Press, Rows and Military Press on one day and Squats and Deadlifts on another day. *Understand Your Nutrition Needs (3:31) As you look to build muscle over 50, it’s more important to consider your nutrition needs than you would have in your 20’s and 30’s. This is because your metabolism lowers as you age and any excess in calories is more likely to be stored as additional body-fat. You need to prioritize a lean bulking nutrition plan to fuel your body for building muscle. What I mean by lean bulking is to have the optimum number of surplus calories above your TDEE (Total daily energy expenditure) to aid with building muscle. This should only be between 250 - 500 calories over, so as not to cause too much excess that will mean fat gain. To calculate your TDEE, here's the Calorie Calculator We Mentioned → https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uTgdg9q3I-zz18w34MG3br8vCbpkW-kxLnWw46qxjdI/edit?usp=sharing *Use Proper Supplementation (7:12) The first thing I tell all the guys I train is that supplements are exactly that… supplemental. They are used as a way to optimize the 2 principles above: exercise and nutrition. If you are not following those 2 principles, any amount of supplements will not lead to muscle gain or improved health and wellness. My recommendations are: Creatine - Increases strength and your ability to push more weight. Also helps preserve muscle, especially in aging guys. 5g to be taken daily. Protein powder - Supports your protein intake and can be taken as Whey, Whey/Casein Blend or a plant based blend. Should be taken post-workout. Vitamin D3 - Increases testosterone and keeps your immune system strong. Multivitamin - Ensures you are getting optimal levels of vitamins and minerals. Fish Oil - Helps with joint care and brain health. Turmeric/Curcumin - Reduces inflammation, especially in joints. *Get Enough Rest & Recovery (9:42) A little R & R is always good for you, right? Well, when it comes to building muscle over 50, it’s incredibly good for you and very important. You need to aim to get an absolute minimum of 7 - 7.5 hours of undisturbed sleep each night. To help with sleeping well, you can use Melatonin supplements, Herbal teas, and should avoid using screens for at least 1 hour before bed, to blue blocking light that can disturb your sleep patterns by tricking your body into thinking it’s still daylight. *Optimize Testosterone Naturally (10:30) Testosterone is the most important hormone when it comes to building muscle, but as you age your testosterone levels decrease by 1% per year after 30-35 years old. This makes it harder to put on muscle, but easier to gain fat. For this reason, you need to optimize your testosterone levels. My 12-point system to get a muscular body after the age of 40. I started at age 40 with a plan to change my body, this is how I looked…with many serious health issues. Fast forward and I am now nearly 51, this is a photo of me taken last week. EVERY YEAR I have managed to increase size, shape and aesthetics even past the age of 50. This is my 10-point plan for obtaining a muscular body after the age of 40: Point 1 Sitting on the coach with a beer in one hand, fat tummy, watching tv and generally look bad, what you don’t realize is that what you are doing is slowly dying and killing yourself. You need to look life in the eye again, you need to choose life, get up and LIVE again. You need to change yourself from the inside. Appreciate the small things in life, start caring for people in need, make right with God, start liking the person you see inside and out and respect yourself. Such life altering choices make one want to get up and LIVE and go to gym to re-invent your body. Such choices make the whole process so much easier and WORTHWHILE… Point 2 Diet determines 80% of your bodybuilding success. You REALLY need to get to grip with this. If you are not prepared to follow proper muscle growth diet guidelines your body will not respond even to the best training and best supplements regimes. Your results will be very mediocre at best. This is what separate the hero’s from the average…the diet! No two bodies re-act the same to the exact same diet. Every 14 days you need to monitor how your body reacted the past 14 day to the diet to determine if you lost muscle weight (bad), fat (good) or both (bad) and then adjust the diet accordingly in a specific fashion. It is not as difficult as it sounds, here is a link to the exact process you need to follow: http://gertlouw.com/2015/06/01/forcin... Point 4 Training determines 15% of your bodybuilding success. Next to diet this is 2nd most important. You must train at least 4 times a week and not more than 5. At age above 40 the body need more time to recover and grow, I find 4 the best balance (Mon, Tues, Thurs, Frid). Less than 4 is not advisable. It is too infrequent training and put you in danger of injury and is not conducive to muscle growth. Keep sessions never longer than 90 mins preferably 50 min. Point5 Training MUST be split as follows due the body being older than 40: • 3 months building phase (6-8 reps per set, EACH set to complete muscle failure) • 1 week rest • 3 month cutting phase (12 – 20 reps per set , 30% lighter weights, never to failure) • 1 week rest • repeat The above training regime allows for a serious 3 month growth spurge but place serious strain on tendons and joints which then need to recover and strengthen during the cutting phase. You cannot start training top failure you need at least a 3 month period of gradual weekly weight and intensity increases to reach the starting point of muscle failure for the next 3 month with the building phase program. You MUST also adjust your diet for the appropriate phase: Building phase diet: http://gertlouw.com/2014/10/27/muscle... and proper Cutting phase diet: http://gertlouw.com/2014/08/16/cuttin... Point 6 During the building (growth) phase you MUST train to absolute muscle failure on each set. This is a key principle for growth. Failure means total and utter failure – mentally and physically you must not be able to lift that weight one more set. If you train with sufficient failure intensity you WILL grow! Because after spending years building muscle naturally I've learned that there are certain useless exercises that you should avoid entirely other exercises that you might want to consider incorporating and then there are the exercises that you just cant go without. Exercises that by themselves have the power to transform your physique. I've narrowed this list down to just seven of the most important exercises that you absolutely should have as a staple part of your routine to efficiently build the most muscle in the shortest amount of time. By mastering these 7 key compound exercises you'll see incredible results even if you're not doing any other exercises in the gym. And I made this video specifically for men not because women can't benefit from these exercises as well but because the ideal attractive body type for men is a V shape whereas for women it's more of an hourglass figure. So even though a lot of the exercises do crossover for both men women this video is specifically to help you develop the best manly physique with the least amount of exercises possible. I'm going to list off these exercises in no particular order, so Let's start first with a very important upper body exercise the bent over barbell Row. With this exercise you'll be working the rhomboids which are the muscles that connect your shoulder blades together so your upper back muscles and you'll also be working the back of your shoulder and your biceps. This is one of the most important pulling movements that you can do. Because you're working multiple muscle groups responsible for Pulling you're able to lift a lot more weight with this compound exercise then if you were to isolate any one of these muscles individually. By strengthening your rhomboids and your posterior deltoid you'll be tightening up your upper back which will help you hold yourself straight up and maintain a better more attractive upright posture. Since you can lift heavy weight with this exercise your biceps are also going to get a lot of stimulation because you'll be lifting a weight that would be impossible to lift with an isolated movement like bicep curls. A basic bent over row is done by grabbing a barbell with your hands a little wider than shoulder-width apart. Stick your butt out and stick your chest out before beginning the movement. Then bend down by about 60 degrees so you're a little higher than being fully parallel to the ground and you want let the weight hang straight down, do not flex your shoulders. While keeping your chest out pull the barbell inward towards your stomach and aim to touch your belly button with the bar. Then bring it back down to that hanging position and repeat this motion for reps. The great thing about rows is that you can do it with a barbell or you can do it with dumbbells, but a general rule of thumb to remember is that you'll be able to lift more weight and typically you'll be able to build more mass with barbells over dumbbells. Also by changing the angles at which you bend during a bent over row you can Target different parts of your back. A fully bent-over position where you're at a 90 degree angle will Target more of your lats and the middle of your back whereas standing more upright will Target more of your traps and upper back. Let's move on to another staple exercise that you should be doing, barbell and dumbbell chest presses. While the rows will help you develop the posterior or the back part of your upper body the chest presses are there to help you develop the anterior or the front part of your upper body. It'll hit your chest, the front head of your shoulders as well as your triceps. With chest presses you want to spend the majority of your time doing them at two different angles flat and incline. If your weakness is your upper chest you want to spend more of your time doing incline presses. if your upper chest is fine but you lack lower chest development you want to spend more of your time doing flat movements. Now the reason why I didn't mention the decline angle is because with flat presses you're going to get

Whether your goal is to lose weight tone up or build muscle this simple task will really help you get a better understanding of where your body is at right now and how to move towards your desired body type. There are those that claim that there are no body types and that everything is measured by hard work at the gym and in the kitchen and having been a trainer for over 10 years I can tell you and that's complete nonsense. And this is proven by science it is true that nobody should be obese however everybody does have their own weight set point people store fat in different places some people store more fat in their stomach area, other people store it more in their thighs, in the chest, and we also have different shapes to our muscle bellies, different lengths different thicknesses, different lagging muscle groups. The point is people really do come in all different shapes and sizes again this doesn't mean that you should be obese but it does mean that we can identify the shape or size that you're at by certain characteristics & apply certain training principles that have proven over time to work to move you towards your desired body shape. Okay so let's start with the test the way that this test works is I'm going to ask you a series of questions & your going to answer a b or c & either write down your answer or remember it because the letter that you answer with most often will help you identify what your body type is by the end of this test. Its a simple test & I'm sure you'll be surprised with the results. First question, do fitted jeans generally feel a. snug, but not too tight around your butt b. loose around your butt or c. tight around your butt. Pick the description that best fits your body Second question, if you wrap your hand around your wrist does your middle finger & your thumb a. just barely touch b. overlap or c. they don't touch. Next question would you characterize yourself as having a. a natural v shaped body b. a naturally very lean skinny long frame, or c. a naturally wide heavy frame. The fourth question requires a measuring tape so if you want to come back to it & leave it blank you can, but I highly recommend you do this one because it's very accurate. Is your chest measurement a. between 37 & 44 inches b. under 37 inches or c. greater than 44 inches? When you get to a measuring tape seriously do this one. The fifth question is how would you rate your metabolism a. fast, but you don't have a problem building muscle, b. so fast that it makes it difficult to put on muscle, or c. slow. Next question In relation to gaining weight its a. easy to gain muscle, but you don't typically gain too much fat. You may even see some ab definition while bukling b. you have trouble gaining muscle & gaining fat, in fact if you finally do gain a couple pounds your body fights to return you to your normal weight or are you more of a c. where its easy for you to put on muscle, but its also very easy for you to store fat especially around your midsection & love handles. Question number seven does your upper body resemble an a. upside down triangle, b. a rectangle that's vertically long & horizontally narrow or c. a square or round shape.two more questions. do you have an a. narrow rib cage thinner than your wider collar bones b. a narrow rib cage as narrow as your narrow collar bones & your narrow hips or c. a thick blocky rib cage as thick as your collar bones & your thick hips. And last question which body type do you look like in the mirror. a.b.or cIf you've answered a. to the majority of the questions you are at the mesomorph stage right now meaning you have a v-taper appearance. If you answered b to the majority of the questions then you are an ectomorph with more of a narrow lanky body, & if you answered c then you are an endomorph with wider thicker body. Now before I go any further I want to say that you are not stuck in your body type. That kind of thinking leads to people giving up & not working as hard at making the necessary changes to change your body type. And then it becomes a self fufilling prophecy. I don't care if you're the hardest gainer in the world, you can eat enough & drink enough soda if that's what it takes to spike your insulin to have you gain some weight. You may always struggle with building more muscle mass

My 1 Year Body Transformation (Calisthenics) From Skinny To Ripped I use to be someone who was super skinny, weak, frail and i looked like a completely beta male with no physical appeal to females at all but just over 1 year ago i made the choice to change my physique and appearance fully by training intensely and consistently with body weight training with calisthenics, no body building!
