Fish-inspired Totem Pole Stands in Library’s Teen Zone
Fish-inspired Totem Pole Stands in Library’s Teen Zone "Go fish," seems to be what motivated woodcarver Joe Marinelli to create a 7-foot-tall totem pole that he donated to the Lower Cape Branch of the Cape May County Library. Located in the Teen Zone of the library, the 50-year-old pine beam is filled with carved striped bass, Mahi-Mahi, and other species. On Feb. 7, Marinelli was joined by his five grandchildren as he presented the original artwork to Ed Carson, library branch head. Marinelli hopes that the young library patrons will be inspired by the piece and will want to take up woodcarving as a hobby or profession. He said the work was partly created power carving and finished with a chisel. He then painted and hand-rubbed the work so that the colors of the fish seem natural. Marinelli has worked as an operations manager in a construction firm and with wood most of his life. He said it was natural, since his grandfather, an Italian cabinet maker, seems to have imparted his skills and innate love of fine woodworking. The totem pole took about three weeks for Marinelli to complete and is the first totem pole ever donated to the library. www.capemaycountyherald.com

Totem Pole Journey
The mining, transport and burning of coal and oil threaten the lands, waters, resources and human health of all of us who live in the Northwest, but none more so than the indigenous people who sit right in the path of destruction. The proposed Cherry Point coal terminal, would sit right on the ancestral lands of the Lummi Nation known as Xwe’chi’eXen. The mining of that coal would also destroy Northern Cheyenne lands in Montana, and all along the way fossil fuel transport would harm the fishing and treaty rights of Native Americans. This is only one of several ill-conceived coal and oil shipment proposals for our region. In protest to these dirty and dangerous proposals members of the Lummi Community will embark on a journey, Our Shared Responsibility-the Land, the Waters, the People, to empower and inform communities all along the rail line, and bring a new level of understanding and engagement to successfully oppose the proposed shipment of an unprecedented volume of coal and oil from the American heartland to the Pacific Coast. A totem pole, created by the Lummi Nation House of Tears carvers and one of the oldest forms of North American storytelling, will join the journey to remind us of our place within nature, our responsibility to future generations, and our connections to each other and to our communities. At the ceremony, the totem pole will be blessed by tribal elders, by community leaders and YOU! The Lummi ask for blessing and protection of sacred lands and treaty rights, including their own ancestral village and treaty fishing waters at Cherry Point, WA. In the testimony of Master Carver Jewell James, the totem itself is not sacred -- it is only when it is touched and shared by many communities standing together that the totem becomes a lasting part of our memories and a symbol of our resistance. So please join us in this unique, indigenous event and let the Lummi community know that we stand with them in the fight against fossil fuels and we share the responsibility to protect the land, the waters, and the peoples of the Northwest. Yellow Rainbowfish Displaying Against Boesemani in 50 Gallon Aquarium
A few days ago I was treated to this unexpected sight. My Yellow Rainbowfish is usually pretty docile, and pretty low on the totem pole as far as my Rainbow school goes. But here he was SUPER colored up more than I've ever seen him before and facing off against the dominant fish! Must have been feeling his oats!

Jonathan visits the New England Aquarium as a volunteer aquarist for a day to learn what it takes to care for thousands of fish in dozens of exhibits, up to the massive 200,000 gallon Giant Ocean Tank (GOT). What he finds is an eye opener—it's not all fun and games. Maintaining an aquarium is serious work. But it does have its benefits, as Jonathan discovers while diving in the GOT and feeding the sharks. This segment won a New England Emmy Award! This segment was originally posted in 2012 but this is an HD version. ********************************************************************** If you like Jonathan Bird's Blue World, don't forget to subscribe! You can join us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/BlueWorldTV Twitter https://twitter.com/BlueWorld_TV Instagram @blueworldtv Web: http://www.blueworldTV.com ********************************************************************** Founded in 1969, the New England aquarium is one of the most famous public aquaria in the United States, and an icon of Boston. Over a million people visit the New England Aquarium every year to see amazing exhibits and the world-famous Giant Ocean Tank—a 200,000 gallon tropical coral reef exhibit. Dozens of aquarists work here and I’m going to find out what it takes to keep the exhibits running. Since I’m not exactly skilled labor, they start me out with something easy. Or maybe I’m just the low man on the totem pole. But I think they saved the disgusting drain cleaning chore for me. That’s OK—I’m working up to the good stuff. At last, I have graduated to something important: food prep. All the fish need something special to eat, and all of that food has to be prepared in advance. Squid are one of the main items on the menu, and they have to be prepared by removing the beaks and then cutting them into appropriately-sized pieces. Food preparation takes a lot of time and it has to be done 4 times a day! Then, I remove the roe from capelin. The eggs are food for smaller animals in the exhibits and the fish themselves are fed to larger animals. Finally, it’s out to the GOT—the Giant Ocean Tank—to start feeding some of the fish. I’m surprised to learn that the fish are hand fed! Outside, it’s the middle of winter in Boston, with temperatures below freezing, but I’m getting ready to do a tropical dive! I’m really excited about my dive, but I can’t help worrying about what tasks lay ahead of me in my aquarist training program. I hit the warm water with a splash while hundreds of people watch, and head down below the surface to swim with the fish in this enormous fish tank. Except for all the people looking in through the glass, it would be easy to believe this was a real Caribbean reef. There are so many fish and the water is so clear, I feel just like I’m diving at some beautiful Caribbean island. Of all the animals in the tank, of course the Sand Tiger sharks are my favorite. The aquarists keep them well fed, so they are not aggressive at all. But they are beautiful to watch. Unfortunately, I have to work. A diver has to scrub these windows every day to keep the algae from growing on them. I tried to tell them I don’t do windows, but an aquarist’s job is never finished. Still, I can think of worse jobs than diving in the GOT to scrub the glass and giving people a clear view of the fish. Meanwhile, Sherrie is checking the health of the fish. She’s down on the bottom examining a nurse shark that has a small cut. When I finally finish the windows, Sherrie demonstrates how she feeds the Sand Tiger sharks. They aren’t always hungry since they are fed regularly. But the aquarists use a pole to feed them because when they do decide to eat, you wouldn’t want your fingers anywhere near those teeth! I hang back and film the action for a while, but soon Sherrie decides that I’m ready to try feeding the fish. This is exciting! I finally get to do the fun stuff! She hands me some squid and I look for a taker. The pressure is on because everyone is watching! A cownose ray comes up and tries to take the squid from me, but I haven’t quite gotten the hang of it. The ray gives up and moves on. So I try feeding the nurse shark using the pole, just like Sherrie showed me. Talk about getting the cold shoulder! At last Sherrie takes pity on my pathetic attempts and gives me some capelin. I’m told I can’t go wrong with this irresistible delicious fish. My first taker is a cow nosed ray, and I can’t resist giving her a little belly rub as she swims over. Next Myrtle the Turtle comes over. Turtles are supposed to eat plants and jellyfish, but Myrtle isn’t picky. As you can see from her figure, she likes food. And when Myrtle wants food, you give it to her! Forget the sharks, Myrtle runs this tank.

Fights, territory, ghoul gangs/organizations, Kaneki crying...this chapter has everything. We get to see a glimpse into the world of the ghoul pecking order and of course Kaneki is the low man on that totem pole. However, it looks like he may have some potential friends in high places. Unless he alienates them and strikes out on his own. Nah, he wouldn't do that...I hope. More chapters are on their way! Thanks for watching and have a nice day!

Fisherfriend of the Isles - Is it Worth it? 7.3 Fishing Factions
Fisherfriend of the Isles is a new Fishing Achievement added to WoW in World of Warcraft Patch 7.3, along with six new Fishing Factions to reach best Friend with! New to WoW in 7.3, there are six Fishing Masters of the Broken Isles to catch special fish for, earn rep with (by turning in the special fish) and buy unique cosmetic fishing items from. Buddy up with Ilyssia of the Waters in Azsuna, Akule Riverhorn, Sha'leth, Corbyn, Impus and Keeper Raynae to earn the Fisherfriend of the Isles and your Underlight Emerald, unlocking two new color variants of your Underlight Angler! You do not need any particular fishing skill to catch fish for any of the Fisherfriend Fishing Masters on the Broken Isles. There is only one Fisherfriend up on any given day, and they are on a set rotation. That rotation goes Sha'leth - Impus - Ilyssia of the Waters - Keeper Raynae - Akule Riverhorn - Corbyn, then repeats. If you're after fishing skillups, fish at Sha'leth when she's up! Rather than a boss to kill, you can summon an NPC dropping many Golden Minnows similar to the murloc item you fish in Suramar. You need Best Friend reputation to get the Bobber from each fishing master, but other items may be purchased at Good Friend. Reptuation and items can all be had in exchange for the special fish you can fish right by the fishing master. The bobbers cost 100 special fish each, a special fish can be turned in for 75 rep and the extra items (toys, pet, shirt) sell for 50 special fish. Sha'leth is in Suramar at 50, 49. She wants Golden Minnows and will sell you a Replica Gondola bobber. Impus is on the Broken Shore at 33, 50 and offers a Desecrated Seaweed Shirt and Demon Noggin bobber in exchange for Desecrated Seaweed. Corbyn is in Stormheim at 99, 10. For Shiny Baubles he offers the Carved Wooden Helm bobber and Corbyn's Beacon toy. Ilyssia is in Azsuna at 43,40. For Fragmented Enchantment she'll sell the Enchanted Bobber and Ghost Shark battle pet. Keeper Raynae is in Val'sharah at 53,72. She offers the Feast of Fishes recipe (not good buff food not needed for raiding) and the Face of the Forest treant head bobber for Corrupted Globules. Akule Riverhorn is at Highmountain at 32,40. For Ancient Totem Fragments he'll sell you a Trawler Totem toy and Floating Totem bobber. A look at the tanks in the fish room; german blue rams; apistogramma; discus and more! happy room
Another day, another youtube video of Rich's Fishes Fish Room! ******************************************************************** Subscribe here: https://goo.gl/4OO1ml ******************************************************************* Lets take a look at all the tanks; shall we?! There is no room in my house that makes me happier than the fish room.....maybe we'll start calling it the happy room! I never planned it this way, but am realizing that my fishroom is almost predominantly stocked with fish from South America and are mostly south american cichlids. They're just my favorite fish! From discus, to german blue rams, to various apistogramma.....I love 'em all! I tend to prefer these soft water fish. I also prefer the hardscapes that generally accompany these type of fish from full lush planted to the driftwood filled blackwater tanks. I love the natural look and aim to recreate that myself! I've tried to talk about how to spot a stunted discus before and once again tried here. There are plenty of experts out there, and novices alike, and there are lots of different theories about the who, what, why, when etc. But what I'm coming to learn from my own experiences is that you'll never know what you're going to get. Well I guess thats not completely true; but there does always seem to be a runt of the litter so to say and more and more I'm believing the idea that certain fish secrete hormones (or some other invisible force) which allows the strongest fish to keep growing and remain the biggest/strongest while something causes one fish to be the low man on the totem pole. Doesnt mean that fish is sickly or there is anything wrong with it....just means it wont be as big and beautiful as its siblings. Nothing beats full grown, big beautiful round discus. And we've probably all seen those fish being sold at the LFS which are labeled as "discus" but dont really look right. Sort of a bit angular, shaped like a football and not very appealing. Many juvenile discus can have that odd shape and its not always something to run away from as many will sort of grow out of that weird teenage phase. The trick is learning to tell a fish that is stunted and wont get that nice round shape vs a young fish that might still grow out of it. The thing that I'm starting to realize is that the fish's eye can be a very telling sign there. Small fish with large eyes are a giveaway of a stunted (or potentially) stunted fish. Body size vs eye size are very important and I've still got lots of learning to do myself; but its one of those things that you sort of just learn to look for! ******************************************************************** Follow Rich's Fishes! evolution nisga'a haida totem pole Movie
thie is a totem pole I carved, it is called evolution. the idea came from when I was watching the discovery channel and the show I was watching said that whales were once large wolf like creatures that lived by the ocean. I thaought imagine going to the beach and seeing a pack of wolves the size of whales. so from the chin up it is a whale, form the ears down it is a wolf, it is a transformation figure. I am a native of Nisga'a and Haida descent.

Five Ten 2016 | Sonnie Trotter | First free ascent of Ewbank Route on Tasmania's Totem Pole
In January of 2009, after a 9-month battle (and 30 years since the First Aid Ascent) 'The Ewbank Route' on the iconic Totem Pole saw all 4 of its original pitches climbed free by two local talents, Doug McConnel, and Dean Rollins. The Tasmanian classic went at 27 (or 5.12d in Yosemite terms), and Planet Mountain wrote: "the two climbers were the first to point out that their style could be greatly improved upon as they freed the individual pitches over separate days, and pitches 2 and 3 were separated by a hanging belay. Those aspiring to climb the line in a single push should be aware that the route takes fiddly gear, is run-out, and solid for the grade. Any takers?" Well as it turns out, this description is exactly what appealed to our athlete's Sonnie Trotter and Will Stanhope. Both climbers are well known for seeking out beautiful and spicy lines around the world and "The Tote" (as it's often called) would be no exception. Watch, as these two climbers explore this rugged peninsula and Trotter takes down the nearly 200-foot pencil like pillar via the Ewbank Route, 5.13b R.

Ketchikan Walkabout
If you like salmon, floozies and totem poles then Ketchikan Alaska is your place. At the historical intersection between the gold rush and the fish rush a day in Ketchikan can be a lot of fun. I was there when the salmon were beginning to spawn. I left out some of the more gross video of rotting fish in the stream... maybe I'll mix a video with some science in the future as it may be of interest to some
