Fish-inspired Totem Pole Stands in Library’s Teen Zone

00:52
Fish-inspired Totem Pole Stands in Library’s Teen Zone "Go fish," seems to be what motivated woodcarver Joe Marinelli to create a 7-foot-tall totem pole that he donated to the Lower Cape Branch of the Cape May County Library. Located in the Teen Zone of the library, the 50-year-old pine beam is filled with carved striped bass, Mahi-Mahi, and other species. On Feb. 7, Marinelli was joined by his five grandchildren as he presented the original artwork to Ed Carson, library branch head. Marinelli hopes that the young library patrons will be inspired by the piece and will want to take up woodcarving as a hobby or profession. He said the work was partly created power carving and finished with a chisel. He then painted and hand-rubbed the work so that the colors of the fish seem natural. Marinelli has worked as an operations manager in a construction firm and with wood most of his life. He said it was natural, since his grandfather, an Italian cabinet maker, seems to have imparted his skills and innate love of fine woodworking. The totem pole took about three weeks for Marinelli to complete and is the first totem pole ever donated to the library. www.capemaycountyherald.com

Aquarist For A Day | JONATHAN BIRD'S BLUE WORLD

11:41
Jonathan visits the New England Aquarium as a volunteer aquarist for a day to learn what it takes to care for thousands of fish in dozens of exhibits, up to the massive 200,000 gallon Giant Ocean Tank (GOT). What he finds is an eye opener—it's not all fun and games. Maintaining an aquarium is serious work. But it does have its benefits, as Jonathan discovers while diving in the GOT and feeding the sharks. This segment won a New England Emmy Award! This segment was originally posted in 2012 but this is an HD version. ********************************************************************** If you like Jonathan Bird's Blue World, don't forget to subscribe! You can join us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/BlueWorldTV Twitter https://twitter.com/BlueWorld_TV Instagram @blueworldtv Web: http://www.blueworldTV.com ********************************************************************** Founded in 1969, the New England aquarium is one of the most famous public aquaria in the United States, and an icon of Boston. Over a million people visit the New England Aquarium every year to see amazing exhibits and the world-famous Giant Ocean Tank—a 200,000 gallon tropical coral reef exhibit. Dozens of aquarists work here and I’m going to find out what it takes to keep the exhibits running. Since I’m not exactly skilled labor, they start me out with something easy. Or maybe I’m just the low man on the totem pole. But I think they saved the disgusting drain cleaning chore for me. That’s OK—I’m working up to the good stuff. At last, I have graduated to something important: food prep. All the fish need something special to eat, and all of that food has to be prepared in advance. Squid are one of the main items on the menu, and they have to be prepared by removing the beaks and then cutting them into appropriately-sized pieces. Food preparation takes a lot of time and it has to be done 4 times a day! Then, I remove the roe from capelin. The eggs are food for smaller animals in the exhibits and the fish themselves are fed to larger animals. Finally, it’s out to the GOT—the Giant Ocean Tank—to start feeding some of the fish. I’m surprised to learn that the fish are hand fed! Outside, it’s the middle of winter in Boston, with temperatures below freezing, but I’m getting ready to do a tropical dive! I’m really excited about my dive, but I can’t help worrying about what tasks lay ahead of me in my aquarist training program. I hit the warm water with a splash while hundreds of people watch, and head down below the surface to swim with the fish in this enormous fish tank. Except for all the people looking in through the glass, it would be easy to believe this was a real Caribbean reef. There are so many fish and the water is so clear, I feel just like I’m diving at some beautiful Caribbean island. Of all the animals in the tank, of course the Sand Tiger sharks are my favorite. The aquarists keep them well fed, so they are not aggressive at all. But they are beautiful to watch. Unfortunately, I have to work. A diver has to scrub these windows every day to keep the algae from growing on them. I tried to tell them I don’t do windows, but an aquarist’s job is never finished. Still, I can think of worse jobs than diving in the GOT to scrub the glass and giving people a clear view of the fish. Meanwhile, Sherrie is checking the health of the fish. She’s down on the bottom examining a nurse shark that has a small cut. When I finally finish the windows, Sherrie demonstrates how she feeds the Sand Tiger sharks. They aren’t always hungry since they are fed regularly. But the aquarists use a pole to feed them because when they do decide to eat, you wouldn’t want your fingers anywhere near those teeth! I hang back and film the action for a while, but soon Sherrie decides that I’m ready to try feeding the fish. This is exciting! I finally get to do the fun stuff! She hands me some squid and I look for a taker. The pressure is on because everyone is watching! A cownose ray comes up and tries to take the squid from me, but I haven’t quite gotten the hang of it. The ray gives up and moves on. So I try feeding the nurse shark using the pole, just like Sherrie showed me. Talk about getting the cold shoulder! At last Sherrie takes pity on my pathetic attempts and gives me some capelin. I’m told I can’t go wrong with this irresistible delicious fish. My first taker is a cow nosed ray, and I can’t resist giving her a little belly rub as she swims over. Next Myrtle the Turtle comes over. Turtles are supposed to eat plants and jellyfish, but Myrtle isn’t picky. As you can see from her figure, she likes food. And when Myrtle wants food, you give it to her! Forget the sharks, Myrtle runs this tank.

Triangle Fish

06:25
A song about a Canadian penny. Lyrics: You know that feeling you get when you want to drink alcohol? That big wet icy hole in your heart like a wave crashing into you on a New England shoreline in December, drowning you in the plague of isolation, because when I think about you, I don't feel like that anymore. It's a good feeling, not great, but warm at least. But I think a little ways into your pine trees we could find the mountain together. If the rocks and stones are done braiding your midnight hair into the rivers I see cascading down over the rim of the Earth, then take my hand and grip it with your chest so that your heart doesn't fall out. And drown me in the slight breeze you make when your lips moves around jokes before pain comes back again to stab your tongue with needles and your mind with shadows. Take me in your skin and wallow with me in the sunshine before you leave me again to take the spirit of curved things away. Sit like a dog, heel to me and come obedient when your God calls, lest he be angry and curse you with joy. Bend like a tree in storm, shatter onto me and cut my skin with a million tiny razors. And come obedient when your God calls, lest he be angry and curse you with joy. Stand proud for me to see, like a monument to my alcoholism, or totem pole for the sane man with the vasectomy... perhaps when you come back I'll be hornier or stupider. Definitely lonelier, remember that when the sunsets. Huddled under the stairs waiting for the tornado to come and take us away to Oz. But we were never in Kansas. We were in Missouri. Or maybe it was Iowa. Nebraska once or twice. California? I can't remember if I saw you there. Colorado for sure, you remember that one I bet. Fuck, we should have gone to Michigan. Now you'll examine the creamy fossil remains, and sheepishly I come thither and contemplate the game I must play. In my left hand gripping tight the evidence of the struggle and I stare upon the vision of your valley's orchard. Slowly the worm wanders out into the light so that the crow swooping low catches it in her feet. Stand on the edge of the chalk cliffs as a storm blows in, I want to see your hair in the wind, and your skin turn pink in the cold. Show me the blood I can't find in my heart. Show me the bruise I can't remember how it got there. Show me saddle you want me to ride and I'll ride into the sunset. Tell me what God I should worship, and I'll worship at your feet. It's like using a circle hook to catch a triangle fish. You don't come when I call. It's like using a circle hook to catch a triangle fish. You've been good to me so far, so I think we'll be friends still as long as the moon keeps hanging in the sky, so we know its light will be with us. Many of these lines can interpreted many ways. And none are correct. Fuck off with your ill advised snake oil meaningfulness. We had enough of that in the 80s. Leave us be with our noise. Don't you get it faggot? We're all just trying to get laid.

My Pokémon Ranch - A Pokémon Fish Tank

09:25
Here's a bunch of footage I have with the Pokémon simply wandering about on the ranch. As I just got this, the ranch can only hold 20 Pokémon, though it'll expand later on. Here, Hayley asks me to find Pokémon I don't yet have in the Pokédex to bring to the ranch, and she chooses Floatzel, Abomasnow, and Noctowl. It shouldn't be too hard, as I can find Floatzel in the wild and Snover and Hoothoot will be easy enough to level up. After that is just a bunch of watching in on the Pokémon do weird stuff, like a Hitmontop balancing atop a Milotic. And at the end, the Pokémon assemble to form a totem pole, apparently. It sucks to be that Luvdisc at the bottom.
