√ Techniques for Analysing Visual Texts | English
#iiutor #English #LanguageTechniques https://www.iitutor.com Techniques for Analysing Visual Texts • You probably have a good understanding of language techniques. • To analyse images, you need to understand the elements of an image. • Techniques help you to deconstruct the image and see the importance of things you might not have noticed before! Directional Terms • Layout: The way in which images or text blocks are arranged on a page in relation to each other. • You may also like to talk about the composition and where the eye is led. • This is useful for book covers, magazines and advertisements. • Background – the furthest distance away, often what is least important. • Mid-ground – the middle of the image if the image were 3D. • Foreground – the front of the image, often the focus point for the viewer. Things being emphasised are placed here. Image Relationships Juxtaposition: • Deliberately putting two objects together to make an association or relationship. • This often shows why they’re similar. Contrast: • To put two very different things together. • To show why they’re different. • NOTE: some people wrongly use contrast and juxtaposition interchangeably. Focus: • The place on the page your eye is drawn to when you first look at the picture. • The focus is often close to the centre of the frame. Frame: • What’s at the edge of the picture? • Why was it included, or why wasn’t it left out? • Usually helps to create a rectangular “cropped” feel to the image. Vector: • Lines on the page create a direction for your eye to travel in a specific order. • Something you follow often without even realising. • Similar to “where the eye is led” or a “directional line.” Colour Techniques • Vivid colour: like a dream or a child’s view, strong emotions. • Murky colour: something is wrong or dirty or ordinary. • Bright colour: lots of energy, new. • Pastel colour: gentle, dreamy, babies. • Dark colours: mysterious, evil, scary, unknown, strong emotion. • Watery colours: emotional, impression. • Red: danger, emotions like love and hate, fear, battle, blood, attention-seeking. Lighting Techniques • Bold: well defined lines or blocks of strong colour. • Stark: lots of dark and light contrast, sharp angles → cruel, mean, professional, clinical, or scientific. • Gradation: one spectrum to another gradually. • Implies change, loss, or distance. • Lighting effects: usually used for photographs only. • Light and shadow in the photo can help to place importance on the objects. • e.g. the lightest part of the picture is usually looked at first, as though it’s in a spotlight on a stage. Texture Techniques • Rough: looks natural, unfinished, unrefined, old etc. • Smooth: looks even, smooth, simple. Can be feminine, or sleek looking, or commercial or new. • Organic: round and flowing shapes and curves, looks natural, not sharp. • Geometric: looks computer-generated or not-real or unnatural, contrived etc. • Line: a directional technique – “the use of wood grains creates a directional line across the page for the eye to follow.”

PHILOSOPHY - Michel Foucault
Michel Foucault was a philosophical historian who questioned many of our assumptions about how much better the world is today compared with the past. When he looked at the treatment of the mad, at the medical profession and at sexuality, he didn't see the progress that's routinely assumed. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/9aEZsh FURTHER READING “Michel Foucault (1926-1984) was a French 20th-century philosopher and historian who spent his career forensically critiquing the power of the modern bourgeois capitalist state, including its police, law courts, prisons, doctors and psychiatrists. His goal was to work out nothing less than how power worked and then to change it in the direction of a Marxist-anarchist utopia. Though he spent most of his life in libraries and seminar rooms, he was a committedly revolutionary figure, who met with enormous popularity in elite Parisian intellectual circles (Jean Paul Sartre admired him deeply) and still maintains a wide following among young people studying at university in the prosperous corners of the world…” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org: https://goo.gl/jtltOU MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/K8d984 More films on PHILOSOPHY in our playlist below: http://bit.ly/TSOLphilosophy Do you speak a different language to English? Irving Wolfe: Introduction to Velikovsky’s Ideas | EU2017
Dr. Irving Wolfe will review Immanuel Velikovsky’s contributions to a broad-ranging discourse in the sciences. Why did Velikovsky’s best-selling Worlds in Collision provoke one of most heated scientific controversies of the 20th century? Why did the gatekeepers of “acceptable” theory feel compelled to mobilize a boycott of the original publisher? And is it possible that Velikovsky’s own perspective on cultural amnesia can help us understand the reactions to his work? Modeling his analysis on a judicial approach, Dr. Wolfe will correct the record for the benefit of new generations in the sciences. Dr. Irving Wolfe earned a PhD in Drama from the University of Bristol, England. He is a member of the faculty, Department of English, University of Montréal, Canada. In addition to his literary research, Professor Wolfe has presented several dozen papers on catastrophism at conferences in England, Canada, and the United States, and has published papers in the field in British, Canadian and American journals. He has also contributed large sections on catastrophism to a number of anthologies. Professor Wolfe is concerned with the long-lasting effects of collective unconscious catastrophic memory on later collective and individual human behavior and intellectual products, so his articles, conference papers, and book sections have focused on catastrophism and Shakespeare, creative art, religion, cosmology, ancient chronology, political activism, epistemology, sport, soap opera, ancient governments and public rituals, ancient cities, ancient writing and literacy, scientific repression and popular culture. He is currently completing a book on catastrophism and unconscious collective memory in Shakespeare. Qualitative analysis of interview data: A step-by-step guide
The content applies to qualitative data analysis in general. Do not forget to share this Youtube link with your friends. The steps are also described in writing below (Click Show more): STEP 1, reading the transcripts 1.1. Browse through all transcripts, as a whole. 1.2. Make notes about your impressions. 1.3. Read the transcripts again, one by one. 1.4. Read very carefully, line by line. STEP 2, labeling relevant pieces 2.1. Label relevant words, phrases, sentences, or sections. 2.2. Labels can be about actions, activities, concepts, differences, opinions, processes, or whatever you think is relevant. 2.3. You might decide that something is relevant to code because: *it is repeated in several places; *the interviewee explicitly states that it is important; *you have read about something similar in reports, e.g. scientific articles; *it reminds you of a theory or a concept; *or for some other reason that you think is relevant. You can use preconceived theories and concepts, be open-minded, aim for a description of things that are superficial, or aim for a conceptualization of underlying patterns. It is all up to you. It is your study and your choice of methodology. You are the interpreter and these phenomena are highlighted because you consider them important. Just make sure that you tell your reader about your methodology, under the heading Method. Be unbiased, stay close to the data, i.e. the transcripts, and do not hesitate to code plenty of phenomena. You can have lots of codes, even hundreds. STEP 3, decide which codes are the most important, and create categories by bringing several codes together 3.1. Go through all the codes created in the previous step. Read them, with a pen in your hand. 3.2. You can create new codes by combining two or more codes. 3.3. You do not have to use all the codes that you created in the previous step. 3.4. In fact, many of these initial codes can now be dropped. 3.5. Keep the codes that you think are important and group them together in the way you want. 3.6. Create categories. (You can call them themes if you want.) 3.7. The categories do not have to be of the same type. They can be about objects, processes, differences, or whatever. 3.8. Be unbiased, creative and open-minded. 3.9. Your work now, compared to the previous steps, is on a more general, abstract level. You are conceptualizing your data. STEP 4, label categories and decide which are the most relevant and how they are connected to each other 4.1. Label the categories. Here are some examples: Adaptation (Category) Updating rulebook (sub-category) Changing schedule (sub-category) New routines (sub-category) Seeking information (Category) Talking to colleagues (sub-category) Reading journals (sub-category) Attending meetings (sub-category) Problem solving (Category) Locate and fix problems fast (sub-category) Quick alarm systems (sub-category) 4.2. Describe the connections between them. 4.3. The categories and the connections are the main result of your study. It is new knowledge about the world, from the perspective of the participants in your study. STEP 5, some options 5.1. Decide if there is a hierarchy among the categories. 5.2. Decide if one category is more important than the other. 5.3. Draw a figure to summarize your results. STEP 6, write up your results 6.1. Under the heading Results, describe the categories and how they are connected. Use a neutral voice, and do not interpret your results. 6.2. Under the heading Discussion, write out your interpretations and discuss your results. Interpret the results in light of, for example: *results from similar, previous studies published in relevant scientific journals; *theories or concepts from your field; *other relevant aspects. STEP 7 Ending remark Nb: it is also OK not to divide the data into segments. Narrative analysis of interview transcripts, for example, does not rely on the fragmentation of the interview data. (Narrative analysis is not discussed in this tutorial.) Further, I have assumed that your task is to make sense of a lot of unstructured data, i.e. that you have qualitative data in the form of interview transcripts. However, remember that most of the things I have said in this tutorial are basic, and also apply to qualitative analysis in general. You can use the steps described in this tutorial to analyze: *notes from participatory observations; *documents; *web pages; *or other types of qualitative data. STEP 8 Suggested reading Alan Bryman's book: 'Social Research Methods' published by Oxford University Press. Steinar Kvale's and Svend Brinkmann's book 'InterViews: Learning the Craft of Qualitative Research Interviewing' published by SAGE. Text and video (including audio) © Kent Löfgren, Sweden

Bike passing through galecier in pangi (H.P.) | | Himalayan Tracker| |
Pangi is a tehsil of Chamba, Himachal Pradesh. The Pangi valley is a remote, rugged and poorly developed tribal area. It is one of the most remote areas in Himachal Pradesh state. Pangi valley is divided into the Saichu, Hudan Bhatori and Sural Bhatori valleys. These are inhabited at elevations of 7,000 feet (2,100 m) to 11,000 feet (3,400 m) above sea level. Roads are poor, with few of them surfaced. The Saach Pass at an altitude of 14,500 feet (4,400 m) is open for vehicular traffic between mid June and October, but closed by heavy snow at other times of the year.[1] The Pangi tehsil covers 1,601 square kilometres (618 sq mi), and had a population of 17,598 at the 2001 census. Pangi has 16 panchayats and 54 inhabited villages. With recent improvements to the roads, the villagers have started to grow cash crops such as peas, apples and other fruit.[1] The valley is mostly inhabited by Pangwal and Bhoti people, mostly Hindu with some Buddhists. Attempts are being made to develop the area for tourism, trekking through the dramatic scenery.[2] Language spoken by Pangi people is called as Pangwali.[3] Two Linguists are working with Pangi people for Pangwali language development. Phonology, Grammar and discourse analysis has been done. "Tubari" A Pangwali monthly magazine is regularly published in valley.

Bret Easton Ellis on ‘American Psycho’, Hollywood Hypocrisy, and the Excesses of #MeToo
Author and filmmaker Bret Easton Ellis talks with Reason's Nick Gillespie about film and pop culture in a wide-ranging interview. Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/reasontv Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Reason.Magazine/ Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/reason Subscribe to our podcast at iTunes: https://goo.gl/az3a7a Reason is the leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines. ---------------- In the 1980s and '90s, novelist Bret Easton Ellis captured more fully than anyone the excitement and ennui of a wealthy and smug America that was stumbling without knowing it into a century filled with terror, disruption, and generalized hostility. In the book and movie versions of Less Than Zero, The Rules of Attraction, and American Psycho, Ellis dissected what happens to a society in which depth of feeling is synonymous with failure to thrive. In this century, Ellis is back in his hometown of Los Angeles writing and producing movies like The Canyons with the likes of Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen, whose shambled personal lives might as well have been scripted by Ellis in one of his most darkly comic moments. He's also putting out one of the most engaging and insightful podcasts available on Patreon, in which he talks with guests like Kanye West, Rose McGowan, and veteran writer/director Walter Hill about the ways the entertainment industry is built on an unstable foundation of economic, sexual, and political hypocrisy. Reason's Nick Gillespie talked with Ellis about the ways Hollywood is failing to come to terms with ever-changing methods of production and distribution, what Ellis sees as the excesses of the #MeToo movement, our rapidly changing and failing public discourse, and the enduring interest and relevance of his work in 2018. Romila Thapar's Dishonest Analysis Of Hinduism And Caste description coming from Aravindan
Prof. Romila Thapar in her latest book on 'Indian cultures', tries to portray Hindu culture as a culture of discrimination. To do this she plays a 'suppressio veri and suggestio falsi' game in which the leftists are adepts. Here we look into the defaming portrayal that Prof. Thapar makes against Hinduism. We look into the quantum and quality of data she has to conceal to make this portrayal. We take a look into the possible Harappan origins of social stratification in India which is an aligned phenomenon with social exclusion. Then we look into the Buddhist-Jain contribution to the defilement of certain hereditary occupations because of their strong notion of moralism and extreme emphasis on non-violence. At the same time we also look at the social emancipation movements that characterized strongly the revival of Vedic religious streams after the so-called decline of Buddhism and Jainism. All these historical factors are surely not unknown to Prof. Thapar. But her aim is to pin the entire blame for social exclusion as it manifests in India on Hinduism. This continual academic negative stereotyping of Hindu religion and culture is in a way rooted in the deep colonial Euro-centric nature of Marxism – the ideological school to which Prof.Thapar belongs. This short video is based on the elaborate essay on the same subject (‘A Culture of Discrimination or A Culture of Emancipation? A Critical Look at Romila Thapar’s Latest Book’) published in Swarajya magazine web portal. You can read the full article here: https://swarajyamag.com/ideas/a-culture-of-discrimination-or-a-culture-of-emancipation-a-critical-look-at-romila-thapars-latest-book
