Papers 3: Learning - The effects of learning style on user reactions to museum websites

19:16
Papers 3: Learning Salone dei Cinquecento, Thursday, February 20, 2014 Helen Petrie, UK The effects of learning style on user reactions to museum websites Museum websites are becoming important learning resources, whether for students studying for a particular course (formal learning), or visitors interested in a particular exhibit following up on what they have seen (informal learning). Museum website developers are clearly endeavouring to provide information for a diverse range of learning situations, with interesting and easy to use presentation of material. One aspect of the situation that museum web developers may well not have considered is the differing “learning styles” of users of their websites. Learning style is a concept widely used in education, although it is not without controversy. But it is clear that some people prefer to learn in different ways, for example some people learn better with information presented as pictures and diagrams (Visual learners), whereas others learn better from reading text (Verbal learners). To investigate this area, we undertook a study of how people with different learning styles react to different kinds of material on museum websites. The Felder-Solomon model of learning styles was chosen for a number of reasons, firstly because it is well established in educational circles and secondly because it is easy to assess an individual’s learning style with a short free online questionnaire (available at: www.engr.ncsu.edu/learningstyles/ilsweb.html). The Felder-Solomon model proposes four dimensions of learning style: Visual/Verbal, Active/Reflective, Sensing/Intuitive and Sequential/Global. The Visual/Verbal dimension has been illustrated above. Active learners like to do things with information to learn and retain it, whereas Reflective learners prefer just to think about the information. Sensing learners like facts and well-established methods whereas Intuitive learners like abstractions and discovering relationships and possibilities. Finally, Sequential learners like to work in a linear sequence of logical steps, whereas Global learners like to see the big picture first and then fill in the details (for a full explanation of these dimensions, see http://www4.ncsu.edu/unity/lockers/users/f/felder/public/ILSdir/styles.htm). 146 university students were asked to undertake a number of typical information seeking tasks on two museum websites (British Museum – www.britishmuseum.org/ and Wellcome Collection – www.wellcomecollection.org/); the tasks were constructed so that they would lead the participants to pages with different kinds of materials which would suit people with different learning styles. After using each website, participants answered the Index of Learning Styles to assess where they are on the Felder-Solomon learning style dimensions and a set of questions that assessed their reactions both to the website as a whole for user experience and usability and to particular aspects of the presentation of information on the website. Results showed that people with different learning styles were significantly more attracted to different aspects of the websites. For example, Active participants preferred large images Visual participants preferred pages with lots of images, Sensing participants preferred concrete examples of concepts, whereas Intuitive participants preferred abstract discussions. The paper will consider the implications of these results and present guidelines for how museum websites can organize their website material to be attractive and useful to visitors with differing learning styles.

Thanks for the sharp eyes that caught that! For those who want to learn more, I highly recommend the book by Michael Nielsen introducing neural networks and deep learning: https://goo.gl/Zmczdy There are two neat things about this book. First, it's available for free, so consider joining me in making a donation Nielsen's way if you get something out of it. And second, it's centered around walking through some code and data which you can download yourself, and which covers the same example that I introduce in this video. Motorcycle Types for Beginners - How to Choose at RevZilla.com

Beginner's Guide to Motorcycle Types https://www.revzilla.com/common-tread/how-to-choose-your-first-motorcycle?utm_source=youtube.com&utm_medium=description&utm_campaign=Motorcycle_Types_for_Beginners___How_to_Choose&utm_term=7g1R_LD0yyY For beginners, finding the right motorcycle to fit their needs can be a daunting task. The selection is vast, and the expense is not insignificant. Various types of motorcycles have equally varied strengths. They also have their own set of weaknesses. Just as you wouldn’t use a sledgehammer to polish your best dress shoes, you wouldn’t want to choose a track bike if the type of riding you wanted to do was all off-road. Regardless of if you are looking for a beginner motorcycle, or are merely seeking to take a dip into another riding style that you might not be as experienced in, this video is all about providing some insight into the types of motorcycles available, and how they can improve your desired riding experience.

A Japanese Method to Develop Creativity in Kids

09:17
Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Japanese people are known for their intelligence, politeness, and wellness. Why is this nation so unique and different from the rest of the world? It seems we’ve found the answer – they have an incredibly cool education system and unique teaching methods! Watch till the end – there is a small but brilliant bonus for you. Let’s start with a unique Japanese method in the schools for developing creativity in kids. We believe that the whole world needs to adopt! It’s called “Nameless paints.” Japanese designers named Yusuke Imai and Ayami Moteki created an unusual set to teach kids colors and painting. This fantastic set won the 2012 Kokuyo Design Award. Let’s see how it works. “Nameless paints” includes ten tubes that don’t have color names such as “yellow,” “blue,” or “green.” Instead, there are only spots of a particular color or colors on each tube. As you can see, the spots are also different sizes. The designers’ aim is to change the way kids think and learn. They want children to understand what shade they will get if they mix certain colors. For instance, a child looks at the tube with two spots: pink and blue. He doesn’t know what color hides inside. He squeezes the tube and gets… purple color! So, as a result, the kid learns that the same amounts of pink and blue paints create purple. Here’s another example – a tube with a big blue spot and small pink one. It means if you mix a small amount of the pink color and a large amount of the blue color, you’ll get dark-blue color. Interesting, right? As you can see, each tube hides a particular color inside. Pink, yellow, blue, purple, red, dark green, dark blue, orange, light-green, and black. However, to get one of these shades, the child should think about which colors create it. As a result, they learn how to create new colors and how to mix them. It’s an easy and fun way to understand the color theory. Recent studies have shown that free thinking is an attribute that a person can acquire over time, and the schools play the most important part in developing creativity. Now, here’s the bonus – 10 brilliant features of the Japanese education system the whole world needs to adopt. The success of the Japanese culture is very simple: they put a lot of effort and time in the education system trying to make it not only useful but also fun. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brightside/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brightgram/ 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/

CHECK THE DIMENSION OF A CIRCLE AND OFFSET COMMAND Auto Cad Learning

05:34
Toolbar Modify Offset Pull-down ModifyOffset Keyboard OFFSET short-cut O Offset is probably one of the most useful commands for constructing drawings. The Offset command creates a new object parallel to or concentric with a selected object. The new object is drawn at a user defined distance the offset from the original and in a direction chosen by the user with a pick point. You can offset lines, arcs, circles, ellipses, 2D polylines, xlines, rays and planar splines. Command Sequence Command: OFFSET In the illustration below, a line cyan has been offset to the right through a distance "Offset" by picking a point to the right of the original line. The result is a new line red to the right of the original.Circles can be offset inside or outside of themselves to create a new circle which is concentric has the same centre point with the original circle. In the illustration, a new circle red has been created outside of the original by picking a point outside of the original circle. The radius of the new circle is the offset distance "Offset" plus the radius of the original circle. In the illustration above, the new objects and original objects are shown in different colours for clarity. In reality, offset objects inherit their object properties from the original object. See the "Object Properties" tutorial for details.

Linguistics, Style and Writing in the 21st Century - with Steven Pinker

Does writing well matter in an age of instant communication? Drawing on the latest research in linguistics and cognitive science, Steven Pinker replaces the recycled dogma of style guides with reason and evidence. Subscribe for regular science videos: http://bit.ly/RiSubscRibe Watch the Q&A here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rYAnYXIhL0 In this brand-new talk, introduced by Lord Melvyn Bragg, Steven argues that style still matters: in communicating effectively, in enhancing the spread of ideas, in earning a reader’s trust and, not least, in adding beauty to the world. Steven Pinker is an experimental psychologist and one of the world’s foremost writers on language, mind, and human nature. He is Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University and conducts research on language and cognition but also writes for publications such as the New York Times, Time, and is the author of many books, including The Language Instinct and How the Mind Works. Melvyn Bragg is a broadcaster, writer and novelist. He was made a Life Peer (Lord Bragg of Wigton) in 1998. Since then he has hosted over 660 episodes of In Our Time on subjects ranging from Quantum Gravity to Truth. He was presenter of the BBC radio series The Routes of English, a history of the English language. 34 - Learn How to Make RAISED PANEL DOORS With solid wood. easy step by step.

27:44
How to make and install Raised Panel doors from any lumber. If you would like to help support our channel, there are a number of ways. One way is direct support through Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/KingsFineWoodworking Another is by purchasing things you might need through our Amazon link. You pay the same and they pay us a small fee. https://www.amazon.com/shop/kingsfinewoodworking You can also help without spending anything, just by liking and sharing our videos. Thank you for your support. We love teaching the world to do woodworking. I’ve had a number of viewers ask me how to build cabinets, and raised panel doors. This is the first video in that series that I will make where I will give detailed instructions on just how that is done. Using these methods, you can save as much as $10,000 - $15,000 on replacing your kitchen cabinets. The kitchen is the single best upgrade you can do to a home. And cabinets are really a very straight-forward woodworking project. Even if you purchased every single tool needed for a full shop to build cabinets, you would still save substantially over purchasing cabinets from a company. I have helped many people get into woodworking and set up a shop using this route. This project will require a router table. But it doesn’t have to cost much. Many of my viewers have built their own. You can also get them pre-made for you in a kit, and they have very high precision. In this video, I am building a set of three raised panel doors that I am making in solid walnut. They are for an aquarium stand for my oldest daughter. I will show step by step every single part of the procedure from the first cut of the lumber to the last part; installation of the door itself. These are the identical doors that are used in high end kitchen and bathroom cabinetry. They also work wonderfully for many other pieces of fine furniture, and even items like jewelry box lids. This video will include the milling of the stock and the making of the raised panel center pieces, and joining up boards to get to the necessary width. It also includes the making of the rails and stiles, and how to set up the required cuts for those on the router table. Finally, it covers assembly, and glue up as well as how to set up and install hinges, and mount the doors. Below, I have detailed the supplies and tools that I used to build these doors. These are affiliate links through Amazon. If you happen to need any of these items and buy them through these links, then I get a small fee from Amazon. It will cost you nothing more, but it helps me to support our channel. Music from diverse regions of the world can successfully enhance concentration, memory, mental stamina, the ability to perceive sounds with accuracy and an increased focus on learning. This is an effective strategy for students preparing to take an entrance exam to get into their favorite college or university. Focus on Learning Music Neuroscience professionals recently studied these personal experiences by using objective methods to track the effects of early exposure to music and speech processing. The results were published in The Journal of Neuroscience. The studies concluded that studying music at an early age provides a variety of benefits for the brain through an entire lifetime. Benefits from a Focus on Learning Music Enjoy a variety of benefits, and study music at the same time. Direct experience is the best way to understand how concentration music can improve mental endurance. Individuals often wonder at this point if there is a difference in the type of music used for the following purposes: • Music for studying • Brain power music • Learning music • Music for exam The first important consideration involves the musical form itself, and the second consideration involves the background of the individual. All children experience music as an auditory experience, and this is true for written music as well as music with little or no musical notation. Concentration Music For Studying For the purposes of understanding the different elements at play when studying music for concentration, the two primary forms of music available are categorized as either written or oral. However, there is a significant amount of overlap between these two categories. For the purpose of using music to focus on learning, notation is a secondary device used primarily for documenting musical memories. Music to Study, and the Studying Playlist Instrumental music presents unique intellectual challenges, and it demands a high degree of coordination between the eyes, the ears and the hands. It does not take long to study music before obtaining benefits. Vocal music attracts people because the human voice has universal appeal. Selecting the right music to study usually involves listening with concentration to various elements including dynamic range, texture, counterpoint, harmony and rhythm. Research on studying music for concentration provides the basis for a school curriculum that helps students to focus on learning math and science by learning music first. The results are impressive. For example, a long study of music can help students get accepted into medical schools. It has also been linked to improved performance in the following areas: • Increased focus on learning • Pattern recognition • Doing homework • Exam preparation • College math • University applications • Study skills Instrumental music often relies heavily on musical notation, which is the foundation for abstract thinking and pattern recognition. Many professionals started their careers by enrolling in a program to study music. These successful professionals subsequently perceived the value of studying music for intellectual endurance, and they applied these skills to business writing, problem-solving, computer work and doing homework. Future professionals can develop a variety of transferable skills through: • Concentration music • Music for studying • Music for exams • Intellectual endurance • Business writing • Problem-solving • Computer work • Research and study skills Different areas of the brain light up and become active during a positive listening experience. This is why the most important consideration when developing a musical playlist is to use a musical style that is received with positive attention. Here is a recommended musical studying playlist that combines different forms of concentration music for studying from around the world: • Traditional African drumming patterns • Beethoven violin concerto • Classical Indian ragas • Meditation chants • Chopin piano music Concentration Music for Working These musical forms are effective learning tools, but they also generate good results as concentration music for working. Employees who use brain power music on the job experience less fatigue and enjoy a higher morale than employees in workplaces where music is not utilized. Your personality and your brain | Scott Schwefel | TEDxBrookings

15:54
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. We all have a unique personality, but we also show up to others in ways we don’t know. Understanding how our brains become consciously aware of ourselves, and in turn, everyone else teaches how we can connect, adapt and ultimately influence others. It all starts with knowing when we are truly self-aware, and when we aren’t, how to get there quickly and easily. Scott Schwefel built and sold Minnesota’s largest technology training company. To get there he used personality assessments to help his people understand each other and understand clients and customers. His study of personality led to an awareness of brain science and how our brains enable us to communicate with each other. Scott has taught these principles of brain science and communications techniques throughout North America, Europe and Asia, and to over 1300 CEOs globally. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Brian - @weezmgk Tom - @SydneyTom_ Bib Bishop - Actually turned the gears down in his shop. Couldn't have done it without Bob! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GET SMARTER SECTION: A quick clarification.... It took me 8 months to learn how to do this, but I was only picking up the bike and running to the end of the driveway and back every day. I wasn't "ACTIVELY" trying to learn. Meaning... I wasn't struggling and trying to make my brain learn. I simply got on the bike every day, tried to operate it to the end of the driveway, turned around and tried to operate it back. The goal was to understand how my brain figured things out on its own, without trying to force it to. Many people have built bikes like this and figured it out in much less than 1 day by staying on the bike until they were able to master it. I had no timelines, and was using this as an exploratory activity to learn how I learn. Do not misinterpret this to mean that I struggled and tried very hard every day for 8 months. That's simply not true. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tweet ideas to me https://twitter.com/smartereveryday I'm also on Instagram, Facebook, and Reddit http://instagram.com/smartereveryday https://www.facebook.com/SmarterEveryDay http://www.reddit.com/r/smartereveryday If you like what I do and want to support my efforts to create Smart kids and Smarter Every Day here are a couple of links you can use to help. 12 Things Your Stool Says About Your Health

11:09
How to understand if you're really healthy? Here's the easiest way to do it: check your stool colors and what learn they mean. As gross as it may sound, the color and shape of your stool can reveal a lot about your health. Any changes you might notice can be a sign of a serious disease. TIMESTAMPS Stool color 0:29 White 1:08 Green 2:00 Yellow 2:39 Black 3:38 Red 4:17 Stool shape 5:29 SUMMARY - If you see separate solid lumps reminiscent of nuts or goat feces in your toilet bowl, it is likely a sign of severe constipation. This type of stool means your body lacks fiber. - Sausage-shaped, large, and lumpy stool speaks of constipation. This type of stool is also caused by a lack of fiber. - If the cracked sausage-shaped stool is what you usually have, there are no reasons to worry. That’s a normal stool. You’re doing just fine! - If you stand with those whose feces are soft, sausage-shaped, and smooth – congratulations! Your stool is as perfect as stool can be! - Soft lumps with clear edges are a sign of light diarrhea. It could also mean that you are experiencing irritable bowel syndrome. - If your stool comes in fluffy pieces with ragged edges, it looks like you are having mild diarrhea. Remember how we told you to have more fiber? Well, in this case, it is just the opposite. Maybe there’s too much fiber in your diet.  - Liquid without solid pieces type of feces is what no one likes to see. It speaks of severe diarrhea. Do you take problems with your stools seriously? Learning Physics-based Motion Style w/ Inverse Optimization

04:40
Liu, C. K., Hertzmann, A. and Popović, Z. This paper presents a novel physics-based representation of realistic character motion. The dynamical model incorporates several factors of locomotion derived from the biomechanics literature, including relative preferences for using some muscles more than others, elastic mechanisms at joints due to the mechanical properties of tendons, ligaments, and muscles, and variable stiffness at joints depending on the task. When used in a spacetime optimization framework, the parameters of this model define a wide range of styles of natural human movement. Due to the complexity of biological motion, these style parameters are too difficult to design by hand. To address this, we introduce Nonlinear Inverse Optimization, a novel algorithm for estimating optimization parameters from motion capture data. Our method can extract the physical parameters from a single short motion sequence. Once captured, this representation of style is extremely flexible: motions can be generated in the same style but performing different tasks, and styles may be edited to change the physical properties of the body.
