By far one of the most unusual shows ever produced. From 1957 - 1960 this program was produced and funded by the U.S Army and used country music as a 15 minute recruitment film for the military. Due to being funded by the government this show is part of U.S public domain... Here's Marty doing a song that was in his 'Marty Robbins' LP released way back in December 1958 that makes it 50 years old exactly. He had done some highly successful sessions with Ray Conniff and Mitch Miller around this time, but stayed true to his Country music roots to turn out an album that even today still holds up as one of the very best of the genre. All three arms of the American services had programmes such as this that would serve as a showcase for Country music talent and to encourage enlistment in those forces. I wonder if they had them for any other genre of music. I doubt it somehow.

Johnny Cash "There You Go" (1958) Early Appearance on Country Style U.S.A.

02:31
Country Style, USA is a series of 15-minute radio and film programs produced by the US Army as a recruiting aid from 1957 to 1960 featuring top American country music artists. Each year 13 episodes were produced in Nashville, Tennessee and distributed to local radio and TV stations. Among the hosts were Jody McCrea, Charlie Applewhite and others. Artists featured on the shows included Jim Reeves, Moon Mullican, and Johnny Cash. The programs were produced by Owen Bradley and his brother Harold. They should not be confused with the 1950 DuMont TV series, Country Style. John R. "Johnny" Cash (February 26, 1932 -- September 12, 2003) was an American singer-songwriter, actor, and author who was considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Although he is primarily remembered as a country icon, his songs and sound spanned other genres including rock and roll and rockabilly—especially early in his career—and blues, folk, and gospel. "Stay a Little Longer" is a Western swing dance tune written by Bob Wills and Tommy Duncan. The chorus was used as the opening theme to Country Style U.S.A. throughout it's entire run. "There You Go" was released as a single released by Sun Records on Nov. 21, 1956. Cash left Sun for Columbia in July, 1958. 16mm film to digital transfer by Gerald Santana

Jim Reeves - Waiting For A Train (Country Style USA TV Show)

02:32
James Travis Reeves (August 20, 1923 -- July 31, 1964), known as Jim Reeves, was an American country and popular music singer-songwriter. With records charting from the 1950s to the 1980s, he became well known as a practitioner of the Nashville sound (a mixture of older country-style music with elements of popular music). Known as Gentleman Jim, his songs continued to chart for years after his death. Reeves died at age 40 in the crash of a private airplane. He is a member of both the Country Music and Texas Country Music Halls of Fame. Reeves was born in Galloway, Texas, a small rural community near Carthage. Winning an athletic scholarship to the University of Texas, he enrolled to study speech and drama, but quit after only six weeks to work in the shipyards in Houston. Soon he resumed baseball, playing in the semi-professional leagues before contracting with the St. Louis Cardinals "farm" team during 1944 as a right-handed pitcher. He played for the minor leagues for three years before severing his sciatic nerve while pitching, which ended his athletic career. Reeves began to work as a radio announcer, and sang live between songs. During the late 1940s, he was contracted with a couple of small Texas-based recording companies, but without success. Influenced by such Western swing-music artists as Jimmie Rodgers and Moon Mullican, as well as popular singers Bing Crosby, Eddy Arnold and Frank Sinatra, it was not long before he was a member of Moon Mullican's band, and made some early Mullican-style recordings like "Each Beat of my Heart" and "My Heart's Like a Welcome Mat" from the late 1940s to the early 1950s. He eventually obtained a job as an announcer for KWKH-AM in Shreveport, Louisiana, home of the popular radio program Louisiana Hayride. According to former Hayride master of ceremonies Frank Page, one day singer Sleepy LaBeef was late for a performance for the Hayride, and Reeves was asked to substitute. (Other accounts—-including Reeves himself, in an interview on the RCA album Yours Sincerely—-name Hank Williams as the absentee.) Reeves scored his greatest success with the Joe Allison composition "He'll Have to Go", a great success on both the popular and country music charts, which earned him a platinum record. Released during late 1959, it scored number one on Billboard magazine's Hot Country Songs chart on February 8, 1960, which it scored for 14 weeks consecutive. Country music historian Bill Malone noted that while it was in many ways a conventional country song, its arrangement and the vocal chorus "put this recording in the country pop vein". In addition, Malone lauded Reeves' vocal styling—lowered to "its natural resonant level" to project the "caressing style that became famous"—as why "many people refer to him as the singer with the velvet touch." In 1963, he released his well proclaimed "Twelve Songs of Christmas" album, which had the well known songs "C.H.R.I.S.T.M.A.S" and "An Old Christmas Card". During 1975, RCA producer Chet Atkins told an interviewer, "Jim wanted to be a tenor but I wanted him to be a baritone... After he changed his voice to that smooth deeper sound, he was immensely popular." Country Style USA with Eddy Arnold and Chet Atkins (1958) Rare Animated Army Commercial!

14:01
Country Style, USA is a series of 15-minute radio and film programs produced by the US Army as a recruiting aid from 1957 to 1960 featuring top American country music artists. Each year 13 episodes were produced in Nashville, Tennessee and distributed to local radio and TV stations. Among the hosts were Jody McCrea, Charlie Applewhite and others. Artists featured on the shows included Jim Reeves, Eddy Arnold, and Chet Atkins. The programs were produced by Owen Bradley and his brother Harold. They should not be confused with the 1950 DuMont TV series, Country Style. Richard Edward "Eddy" Arnold (May 15, 1918 -- May 8, 2008) was an American country music singer who performed for six decades. He was a so-called Nashville sound (country/popular music) innovator of the late 1950s, and scored 147 songs on the Billboard country music charts, second only to George Jones. With the rise of rock and roll in the 1950s, Arnold's record sales declined, though he and fellow RCA Victor recording artist Jim Reeves had a greater audience with popular-sounding string-laced arrangements. Arnold annoyed many people of the country music establishment by recording with the Hugo Winterhalter Orchestra at RCA's studios in New York. The pop-oriented arrangements of "The Cattle Call" and "The Richest Man (in the World)", however, helped to expand his appeal beyond its country music base. This style, pioneered by Reeves and Arnold, became known as the "Nashville Sound". Chester Burton "Chet" Atkins (June 20, 1924 -- June 30, 2001) was an American guitarist, occasional vocalist and record producer who, along with Owen Bradley, created the smoother country music style known as the Nashville sound, which expanded country's appeal to adult pop music fans as well. Atkins' signature picking style was inspired by Merle Travis. Other major guitar influences were Django Reinhardt, George Barnes, Les Paul and later Jerry Reed. His trademark picking style and musicianship brought him admirers within and outside the country scene, both in the United States and internationally. Atkins produced records for The Browns, Porter Wagoner, Norma Jean, Dolly Parton, Dottie West, Perry Como, Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Eddy Arnold, Don Gibson, Jim Reeves, Jerry Reed, Skeeter Davis, Waylon Jennings and many others. Among many honors, Atkins received 14 Grammy Awards as well as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, nine Country Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year awards, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. 16mm film to digital transfer by Gerald Santana
