Parajumpers Stories - The Art of Kayak Building

08:58
The most beautiful bays on earth can only be explored from the endless immensity of the sea. This yearning for nature, the water and its deepest secrets is precisely the stuff that adventure travellers’ dreams are made of – dreams that the warm-hearted kayak experts at Seawolf Kayak, with their rich history of craftsmanship, can make come true. Exploring windswept beaches, unspoiled woods and imposing rocks and discovering rare wildlife and the unique heritage of the Inuit and Aleut people, this episode of Stories by Parajumpers is dedicated to Kiliii Yuan, the founder and owner of Seawolf Kayak, a company that started as a survival school for ancient skills and that celebrates the traditional art of building skin-on-frame kayaks. “I spent the majority of my life chasing after my culture and my culture’s tradition,” explains Yuan, whose mission was inspired by his Grandmother’s stories and who dedicates his life to the Inuit and Aleut people from the far north of North America, Greenland and eastern Eurasia ever since. “My ultimate aim is to learn how indigenous people understand nature as a way of life.” he continues, adding that his aim resulted from the willingness to reconnect with the land of his ancestors, while teaching others how to build a kayak in a traditional way, thus making the magical moments of kayaking happen. But the beauty of Yuan’s handmade kayaks lies not only in the celebration of heritage, but also in his dedication and passion for state-of-the-art craftsmanship. In order to satisfy the needs of the modern-day adventurer, Yuan took up the challenge to build complex yet easily manoeuvrable shapes of kayaks that are both functional and desirable. All the kayak models undergo extensive quality tests and are each designed with a particular set of needs in mind, such as the functional requirements of long expeditions, fishing, surfing and exploration trips. Many years of experience in rough waters are mandatory, if one wishes to create unique kayaks that match the needs of junior, intermediate and advanced paddlers. The five steps of building a kayak seem simple at first glance, and yet they require a high-quality craftsmanship and precision that ensures a lightweight, high tech and long lasting design of premium quality. Amazingly, even if the purpose of kayaking has changed over time – they are no longer used in the hunt for seal, walrus and whales on the open ocean – the art of kayaking is here to stay. Today, it pleases nature lovers who enjoy boating among the mesmerising ice floes of the high arctic, or through fierce storms and strong currents, just to experience the beauty and uniqueness of unspoilt nature and wilderness. “I live in Seattle, and I love it here, because everything is about the ocean and about the sea.” says Kiliii Yuan. “It’s a great place, a great junction between people and nature, which is a big part of my life and determines what I do and how I see the world.” A self-professed water adventure addict, Kiliii Yuan concludes by confessing his eternal love for the big blue: “When you go out and the wind is whipping 30 miles an hour and the waves are really harsh, that’s when a boat needs to be good,” concludes Yuan. “That’s when it needs to let you enjoy the experience, while keeping you safe. The sea and the wilderness are all about the magic of what it means to be human.” Are you interested in more escapism and unique travelogues? Jet Kayak Build and First Test

03:49
Skip to 2:08 for test run This is the build process and first test run of my Jet Kayak. It is modeled after an ocean kayak body style, but has a flat back end instead of a tapered one and is enlarged slightly to support its 125lb powerplant; A Rotax 900 ACE H.O. Engine out of a Sea Doo Spark, which produces 90 horsepower. Unfortunately it was too wavy on the day of the first test to go wide open throttle, as I didn't want to risk damage to the boat before testing its capabilities thoroughly. My guess is that I topped out between 25 and 30 miles an hour, and there was plenty of throttle left to be opened up. I decided to build this a few years ago when I was testing handheld a device I had built that used an electric motor and propeller to move a swimmer through the water. It worked, but eventually I had issues with the motor getting wet despite attempts to seal it. At that point I thought of putting a similar device on my kayak, but quickly realized that I wanted something faster. Comment with any questions.

Building a Stitch & Glue Kayak: Complete Video

58:59
This is the complete Chesapeake Light Craft kayak building video, filmed in 2001. John Harris walks you through every step in the construction of a Chesapeake 16 kayak. Straightforward to build, handsome, and with famously benign handling qualities on the water, 8000 Chesapeake-series kits have been built around the world, with countless more from plans. The techniques here are showing their age; kayak kit technology has moved on a bit from 2001 and construction has gotten easier. (For example, since 2005 or so we've been using simpler puzzle joints rather than the scarf joints seen here..) The goal of the Chesapeake Light Craft team was to create a boatbuilding video of unprecedented clarity. High production values and an emphasis on watchability has made this one popular. The droll sight gags and general levity of the piece were deliberate---prior to 2001, boatbuilding videos seemed to specialize in somnolence, taciturnity, and cheap-wedding-video visuals. It seems to work. You can purchase a copy of the DVD here: http://www.clcboats.com/shop/boat-building-books-kayaking-dvds/boat-building-kayaking-dvds/

42 wood strip kayak kit

08:55
Wood strip kayak kit by Canoe Model kits is one of our best ones yet! The finished kayak is 42" long and has higher bow and flatter aft section. Scale model of one of the very popular strip canoes. Like all of our strip model kits, it goes together easily. This is a real beauty. Comes with a generous bundle of clear pine strips for the hull, and wider strips for the deck, along with Red Cedar strips for contrast, 8 CNC cut forms, a numbered strong back, cock pit coaming, cast seats, webbing, braid, buckles, wall mt, compass rose decal along with several options such as paddle kit and table top mount. You'll have a great time building this model and will be well versed with the building method if you want to build the full sized version. Go to www.canoemodelkits.com for full details.

This is my attempt to make a skin on frame kayak using pvc pipe for the frame and zip ties. I was working without any plans or official measurements and using only my experience paddling kayaks and building 2 previous CLCBoats kayak kits. I was not able to finish the whole boat during my Christmas break at my mother-in-laws house so the skinning will have to wait till summer. If you are a pro builder of things you may not want to watch this as the sloppy nature may cause you pain. However, it did come out much better than I thought it would.

Over the last 15 years, CLC boatbuilding classes have launched 900 boats and introduced more than a thousand students to the joys of boatbuilding. CLC has been hosting and teaching build-your-own-boat classes since 1994. Our talented professional instructors will help you assemble your own boat from start to finish. Most classes are 5-1/2 days---a perfect one-week vacation, with your own boat to take home, ready for finish work. View CLC's current class schedule here: http://www.clcboats.com/classes This award-winning kayak design can carry enough gear for a week of camp cruising. Lightweight yet sturdy, the Chesapeake is easy to cartop, carry, and store. The Chesapeake kayak is stable, fast, and seaworthy. If you want to travel along rocky coasts and in exposed waters, this is the perfect boat. Even so, a kayak is ideal for coastal and inland waters. The kayaker travels in a low, quiet boat which floats in only a few inches of water. A kayak is a great choice for bird watching, simply exercising, or just watching the marsh grass bend in the wind while camping in remote places. The West Greenland style hard-chined hull has naturally easy and controllable handling for the skilled paddler and comfortable stability for the newer paddlers. The hull shape ensures good tracking even in windy and rough conditions. The deck is cut from "Sapele" mahogany plywood for extra good looks and natural contrast with the Okoume hull and sheer panel. Making a Cedar Strip Kayak - micrBootlegger Sport Build Overview

35:44
Watch the whole kayak building project from buying wood to launching the finished cedar strip kayak. I documented the complete build of a microBootlegger Sport strip-built kayak in a 68 episode vlog. Here I boil it down to a single half hour. This kayak is made from western red cedar that I bought as boards and milled into 3/16" strips. The design is my own. I cut forms on a ShopBot CNC machine. The cedar strips are assembled on the forms with hot-melt glue and without staples. I used a Robe-Bevel tool to shape the strips for tight seams. The assembled strips are scraped, planed and sanded to a fair surface before applying stain, fiberglass and epoxy. Part 1 - Building a Stitch-and-Glue CLC Kayak

01:32
In this segment, John Harris introduces us to the Chesapeake 16 kayak. This 14-part video walks you through every step in the construction of a Chesapeake 16 kayak. Handsome, straightforward to build, and with famously benign handling qualities on the water, 7000 Chesapeake-series kits have been built around the world, with countless more from plans. Filmed in 2001, the goal of the Chesapeake Light Craft team was to create a boatbuilding video of unprecedented clarity. High production values and an emphasis on watchability has made this one popular. The droll sight gags and general levity of the piece were deliberate---prior to 2001, boatbuilding videos seemed to specialize in somnolence, taciturnity, and cheap-wedding-video visuals. It seems to work. Kayak Building on the Hudson River in Yonkers

13:05
Parts 1 and 2 of Made by Hand, Baidarkas on the Hudson together. Now with better color and updated credits to include Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club (www.yprc.org). This video documents the construction of three skin on frame kayaks built in a shop underneath a train bridge. It took the builders about four months at a day or two a week. Jack Gilman, who has been a driving force in the YPRC for over a decade, teaches the course every winter. Baidarka is a Russian word meaning "little boat". The kayak is one of the most efficient forms of transportation, and one of the most beautiful boat forms, every created. Yonkers lies next to the great Hudson River and has a long coastline. It has two commercial docks, Diamond sugar and the Yonkers pier, three boat clubs, Palisades, Yonkers Yacht and the Corinthian, and the Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club, which is dedicated to human powered vessels, such as canoes and kayaks.

Building a Traditional Greenland Skin on Frame Kayak (High Resolution)

02:45
This is a higher resolution video of the process of building a Greenland Skin on Frame kayak. I used the book by Christopher Cunningham, "Building the Greenland Kayak", as my main guide. Chris and his Sea Kayaker website forum was a great help. It was a lot of fun building the kayak. It is all based on body measurements. The kayak is 17'3" long and 21 " wide, made of pine (gunwhales, stem, stern) and ash (ribs, cockpit hoop) and maple (masik). The skin is actually urethane coated ballistic nylon. I also received great help and materials from Corey Freedman of Skinboats. Both Chris and Corey were quick to give excellent suggestions when I had questions. The music is from Buddy Washisname and the Other Fellas. It was a great project to try and I'm quite pleased with the results. I'm off to paddle!!
