A Story of Indexes and Full Table Scans: Finding All the Red Sweets Part 1

08:43
"Why isn't Oracle using my index?!" is a common question people have when tuning SQL queries. In this episode Chris compares two methods for finding all the red candies from party bags he's prepared. He shows how these are like a full table scan and an index range scan. He goes on to compare the performance of these two approaches. He shows when a full table scan becomes more efficient than an index range scan and vice versa. ============================ The Magic of SQL with Chris Saxon Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Why Won't Oracle Use My Index - 12c Attribute Clustering - Lesson 1

01:46
Sometimes a poor clustering factor is the cause when Oracle Database cost based optimizer does not choose to use an index. With Oracle 12c (12.1.0.2 EE) offers a new feature that can really help - "Atrribute Clustering". This is implemented with a new keyword on CREATE TABLE - "CLUSTERING BY LINEAR ORDER". In this Free Tutorial from SkillBuilders and Oracle Certified Master DBA John Watson, you'll get a brief refresher on clustering factor and a demonstration of CREATE TABLE - "CLUSTERING BY LINEAR ORDER" - so the CBO will use your index! In this first lesson, John will provide a brief review of clustering factor. See all 6 lessons - FREE - at http://www.skillbuilders.com/12c-attribute-clustering

How Many Indexes Are Too Many?: Finding All The Red Sweets Part 5

10:58
Every index you add to a table increases its storage requirements and DML overheads. So it's a good idea to create as few as possible. When you have two or more indexes using the same columns, you may be able to get away with just one. But how do you decide which to keep? This video discusses how to analyze your queries so you can cut the number of indexes you create. ============================ The Magic of SQL with Chris Saxon Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Oracle SQL Tuning - How to Read Execution Plans (Explain Plan)

13:39
In this free tutorial you will learn how to generate and read (interpret) an execution plan in Oracle Databases. See more FREE Oracle Tuning tutorials at http://skillbuilders.com/free-oracle-tutorials. Understanding what the Oracle Database does with your SQL is essential to tuning - and the execution plan is the key. Oracle Certified Master DBA John Watson will provide a brief introduction (4 minutes) - which includes John's tuning methodology, then demonstrate EXPLAIN PLAN, SQL*Plus AUTOTRACE and DBMS_XPLAN.DISPLAY_CURSOR. In the tutorial, John will teach you: - How to read an execution plan - Find the 1st step in the plan - Decipher the order of the steps in the plan - That EXPLAIN PLAN can be very misleading Prerequisites: To get the most from this tutorial, you should: 1 Know how to code SQL 2 Be familiar with SQL*Plus 3 Know - in very general terms - what an execution plan is. 4 Have a basic understanding of the Library Cache (this is where Oracle Database stores parsed SQL statements) 5 Have a basic understanding of the Cost Based Optimizer (this is the part of the database that parses your SQL, creates an execution plan. Hopefully the correct - most efficient - plan).

The Video Explains the difference between Local Partitioned Indexes(Prefixed vs Non Prefixed Indexes). and Global Partitioned Index along with the challenges in maintaining Global partitioned Indexes when the underlying tables partitioned is dropped/truncated/Merged/Moved. Local Partitioned Index Shares the same boundaries as the table and are in the same number as table partitions they are widely used in DSS and DWH systems. While Global Partitioned Index are predominantly used in OLTP systems

This is our moment of glory and time for you to join us ! Arup Nanda has been an Oracle DBA for over 20 years with experience spanning all aspects from Modeling to performance tuning and Exadata. He speaks frequently, has authored about 300 articles, co-authored 5 books, blogs at arup.blogspot.com and mentors new and seasoned DBAs. Sessions Database Security in a Single Day in the Cloud This session attendees will learn some simple but highly effective steps they can implement in just one day that will eliminate a lot of vulnerability and make the database secure against 90% of the common attacks. Should I Drop Indexes in Exadata Cloud In this session you will learn what storage indexes are in Exadata, how they work (and don’t), how they work along with traditional indexes, how to gradually evaluate the effect of indexes instead of a sudden change, how to compensate for lack of indexes and read execution plans. In this session you will learn how the blocks get into the buffer cache, what buffer cache chains are, how they are managed, how cache buffer chain latches are used and when they cause significant performance issue, how DBWR and checkpoint processes work, what causes the buffers to be written back to the disk, the role of commits and rollbacks in buffer movement between buffer cache and disks and much more.

How Does the Phyiscal Location of Rows Affect Indexes?: Finding All the Red Sweets Part 2

09:25
In part one of the red candy series, Chris compared the efficiency of using a index range scan and full table scan to access data. He found that a full table scan was more efficient when fetching more rows than there are table blocks. This analysis made a big assumption however. It worked on the presumption that there was no correlation between the order of candies in the document and which the bags they were in. In this episode tests this assumption. Chris looks at how the physical order of rows in a table can affect the efficiency of indexes on it. He discusses how Oracle tracks this via the clustering factor. ============================ The Magic of SQL with Chris Saxon Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates.
