Learn how to multiply polynomials. To multiply polynomials, we use the distributive property. The distributive property is essential for multiplying polynomials. The distributive property is the use of each term of one of the polynomials to multiply all the terms of the other polynomial. After multiplying the polynomials, we then simplify the product by combining the like terms and evaluating (add or subtract) them. As we multiply polynomials with more and more terms we often lean on helpful tricks to help us keep the product organized and remember the steps such as FOIL and BOX METHOD.

Partial products means we multiply numbers part-by-part. For example, 5 x 36 is done as 5 x 30 and 5 x 6, and those two parts are added. You can quite easily do these in your head when one number has two digits and the other has one.
This concept is very important, as it is the basis for the regular multi-digit multiplication algorithm studied in 4th grade.
I also teach it in my book Math Mammoth Multiplication 2 at http://www.mathmammoth.com/multiplication_2.php - available both as an inexpensive download ($5.10) and as a printed copy.

The ancient Egyptians used a division method we call "partial quotients." It's a quick an intuitive way to do division.
Also check out how ancient Egyptians multiplied numbers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHXsKyVSPOU
Then read why this method works: http://mindyourdecisions.com/blog/2015/04/09/an-incredibly-easy-way-to-divide-numbers-ancient-math-secret-you-didnt-learn-in-school/#.VSbUyPnF98E
The problem 30 divided by 2 1/2 is documented in the Rind Mathematical Papyrus, Problem 76. The document is from ~1650 BC, which is more than 3,600 years ago.
Rind Mathematical Papyrus: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhind_Mathematical_Papyrus
I came across this problem in a text about non-western mathematical history, "The Mathematics of Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, India, and Islam: A Sourcebook" : http://amzn.to/1CuroWL
Today this algorithm is taught as the partial quotients method (pdf): http://everydaymath.uchicago.edu/teaching-topics/computation/documents/div-partial-quotients-ex-1.pdf

You can use partial products to find the product of a two digit by two digit number. Mrs. Hauck recommends that you have a piece of scratch paper handy to do your base facts on. Make sure that when you are adding the partial products you line up the place value correctly.

This video covers material that answers this essential question: How do you know you have the correct number of decimal places in your product? In addition, it explains how zeros are added in the product by analyzing the decimal places in the factors of the problem.

We use the Commutative Property of Multiplication and the Distributive Property to explain number patterns on the multiplication table. We shade rows and columns on a multiplication table to help us see the patterns. We talk about the rule for products: when at least one factor is even, the product will be even and when both factors are odd, the product will be odd. Check my JoAnn's School Facebook page for an image of a blank multiplication table that you can copy and print.

The Commutative Property of Multiplication states that when we change the order of the factors, the product stays the same. We can draw a picture, or use counters to show the Commutative Property of Multiplication. We complete multiplication sentences from models, we write related multiplication sentences. We use reasoning to find unknown factors.
