Ship is the hottest new dating app from the makers of Tinder and Betches Media. Watch this video to see our review of the Ship dating app and find out how it works.
When you first open the app to sign up, you’ll be asked whether you’re single or not. This will determine which Ship experience you’ll have. If you’re single, you’ll be able to access all of the app’s features. If you’re not single, you’ll have to get one of your single friends to invite you to their Crew so you can help them find a worthy match.
The sign up process is fairly straight-forward and similar to many other dating apps. You’ll need to provide basic information like your phone number, first and last name, and date of birth, and you can add a couple other details like where you went to school and what you do for work. You’ll also be prompted to add a photo to your profile. You’ll have to allow access to your location and contacts in order to use the app, and you can invite your friends to join your crew as well. Since your account is linked to your phone number, Ship can automatically show you which of your contacts are already using the app, which is pretty cool. After that your account is all set. You can add more information to your profile by tapping Profile at the bottom of your screen. Here you can add additional photos, and information about yourself including what you’re looking for, your height, religion, political views, your sign, your opinions on things like drinking and smoking, and whether you have any pets or children.
By tapping Settings you can change what gender you’re interested in, the age range you’re looking for, and the maximum distance from you you’d like your potential matches to be within. Browsing matches in the Discover tab works similarly to how it does on Tinder. You’ll see the person’s name, age, and photo. Tap their photo to view any other pictures they have on their profile, and tap the i in the bottom right corner of their photo to see more information about them. If you’re interested in them, swipe right or tap the check mark. If you’re not interested, swipe left or tap the X icon. There’s no limit on how many profiles you can look at per day, so go ahead and look through as many as you’d like. You can also share profiles to your Crew’s group chat to get your friends’ opinions, so you don’t have to worry about taking screenshots and sending messages on other apps. If you like someone and they like you back, you’ll be matched and they will appear in the Matches tab. If one of your friends in your Crew is browsing profiles for you and sends a like on your behalf, and that person or someone in their crew sends a like back, you’ll be matched. So it’s possible for you and your potential matches to discover and like each other, or to essentially be set up as a match by your Crews. When you or anyone in your Crew is browsing profiles in Discover, your activity will appear in the Activity tab of your crew’s chat. This way, you’ll all be able to see what profiles everyone has looked at, and whether they liked or passed.
When you start chatting with one of your matches, everything is kept private, so you don’t have to worry about your Crew being able to see your private messages. They’re only involved in the browsing and matching process, the rest is up to you.
When using Ship as a Crew member and not as a single, the sign up process is the same, but you’re not setting up an actual profile on the app. Once you’ve created your account, you can join one of your single friends’ Crews. When you go on the Discover tab, you’ll see which friend you’re matching for listed at the top of your screen. The profiles you can see will be based on your single friend’s Ship preferences. Swipe left if you don’t think they’d be a good match, or swipe right if you think they’d make a good couple. Share profiles to the Crew group chat if you want to see what they think. Your friend and other Crew members will be able to see which profiles you’ve looked at and what you thought of them in the Activity tab of your group chat. If you or another Crew member finds a match for your single friend, you’ll be able to see that they matched, but you won’t be able to chat with the matches for them or see your friend’s private messages. Crew members can help with the matching process, but that’s as far as it goes.
