The world's second largest sporting event opens in style

02:12
세계에서 두 번째로 큰 스포츠 축제 드디어 개막 The 2018 Asian Games kicked off Saturday in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. It's considered the world's second biggest sporting event, in terms of global participation. And this year, South and North Korea are joining hands once again to compete together in several events. The Games began with a call for world peace. Won Jung-hwan reports. 2018 Asian Games kicked off in the Indonesian capital with a dazzling opening ceremony. Just before the ceremony began, there was an amusing video showing Indonesian President Joko Widodo trying to make it to his appearance there on time. His convoy is stuck in one of Jakarta's infamous traffic jams, so the President grabs a motorbike... and weaves through the cars and narrow lanes to get to the stadium just in time. After the President's ordeal, there was the breathtaking scene of some 2-thousand school children doing Indonesia's traditional Saman dance, which UNESCO has listed as part of the world's cultural heritage. They welcomed the athletes, who this year hail from 45 different countries. With around 11-thousand people competing from all across the region, the Asian Games are considered the world's second largest sporting event second only to the Olympics. When the Korean delegation appeared, the stadium let out a roar. Athletes and officials from South and North marched in together behind the Korean Unification Flag, which bears an image of the Korean Peninsula in light blue... against a white background. Their presence together in Jakarta is a symbol of peace,... as was their joint entrance to the Winter Olympics this past February in Pyeongchang. Bearing the flag together were Lim Yung-hui, the South Korean captain of the unified women's basketball team,... and North Korean football player Ju Kyong-chol. This was the 11th time in history that the two Koreas have walked in together. The first was at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney Olympics. They've done it also at the Asian Games in South Korea's Busan in 2002... and in Doha in 2006. The Games in Jakarta will run for two weeks. And spectators can look forward to unified Korean teams competing in women's basketball, dragon boat racing and rowing. Won Jung-hwan, Arirang News. 'Til the end, teacher puts students' lives before hers in sinking ferry

02:14
A total of 14 teachers from Danwon High School were on the ill-fated trip to Jeju, when the Sewol-ho ferry sank. Three teachers were rescued, while 11 remained unaccounted for. One of those who didn't make it... is a teacher, who until the end... was more concerned about her students, than herself. Connie Lee has the story. In the last desperate moments before the ship was going down... a daughter texts her mother. "Mom, the ship is sinking." In shock and confused,... the mother calls her daughter, [ ] Jeon Su-young right away. " ' , ' . ." [ : I told her, 'hurry wear a life vest.' But all she said was 'Mom, the students are all wearing life vests.' Now that I think about it, this meant that students had life vests on, while she didn't.] To her boyfriend, Su-young texts him that, "there are no life vests... I'm sorry." The boyfriend calls her immediately, but they hang up after 12 seconds on the line. Su-young tells him that she needs to call her students' parents. " ." [ : She said the ship was sinking and that she had to quickly get all her students in life vests. We hung up shortly after. She said her battery was running low, and that she needed to call her students' parents.] Her last words to her boyfriend... "I love you" and "Thank you." It was Su-young's second year as a homeroom teacher at Danwon High School. And as for the school's yearly field trip--- this one to Jeju island on the [ ] Sewol-ho ferry, was her first. Her room remains untouched... since the day she left for the ill-fated trip. Her bike too... remains parked... waiting for Su-young to return. Apparently her grandmother is also waiting... for her granddaughter to come home safely. " . . ." [ : Her grandmother still believes that she is alive. She says that her granddaughter is safely inside the ship. She continues to believe that.] But as much as there is sadness over the loss... her mother is also proud of her daughter... who put the lives of her students before her own. The 27-year-old was found unconscious in an apartment in Cheongdam-dong and was moved to Konkuk University Hospital, but passed away shortly after at around 6:32 p.m. The search for the idol group member began when the police got a phone call at 4:42 p.m. from his sister... in which she told them messages from him containing phrases such as "let me go," and "this is my last farewell."... led her to fear the worst. Upon conducting an area-wide search throughout Cheongdam-dong, police officers found Jonghyun at 6:10 p.m. in a residence he had checked into earlier that day. The room was filled with smoke from lit coal briquettes. His family members have decided not to carry out an autopsy according to the Gangnam Police Department on Tuesday. Surviving students of Sewol-ho ferry disaster testify

02:12
Six surviving students of the Sewol-ho ferry disaster were in court Monday, giving testimony in a trial against the ferry's crew members. The students said many more would have survived,... IF the crew and the Coast Guard had taken proper measures. Yoo Li-an reports. A ferry with about 300 passengers,... most of them students, is sinking fast. But instead of staging full-out rescue efforts,... the crew members are nowhere to be seen, and the coast guard is watching from afar. This... was the testimony given by six survivors of April's Sewol-ho ferry disaster... who are students of Danwon High School. Speaking in a court hearing Monday afternoon,... the six gave a chronological account of the events from the time of the accident. One said that about "30 students were lined up for the emergency exit. But when the rescue team didn't arrive,... each student began jumping into the water." As soon as she did,... the student says in a shaky voice that the waves suddenly crashed up against the emergency exit,... where 10 of her friends had been waiting. They were unable to escape. Another surviving student... also said that the Sewol-ho crew were nowhere to be seen for the entirety of her escape. She testified that the coast guard was within an arm's reach of the emergency exit,.. but only lifted out the people who fell into the water. She said she told them a lot more of her friends were just inside the emergency exit,... but the coast guard only watched as the ship continued to list. Most students told judges that there were repeated announcements instructing passengers to stay where they were. If they had received instructions to escape, the six students said many more could have survived. The students ended their testimonies by asking the panel of judges to punish the crewmen to the strictest letter of the law. Sewol-ho ferry captain Lee Joon-seok and three of his fellow crew are currently on trial for charges of homicide by willful negligence. None were present at Monday's court hearing. Sewol-ho Ferry emerged from water for the first time in nearly 3 years

02:22
3년만에 처음으로 물밖으로 나온 세월호 인양 과정 Our top story; a massive operation to raise the sunken Sewol-ho. The ferry sank in 2014, and was recorded as one of the worst maritime disasters in Korea's history, taking over 3-hundred lives, mostly high school students. Shin Se-min starts us off with details on the procedure It's the first time the Sewol-ho Ferry has been seen above the surface of the sea since it sunk in the waters around Jindo Island almost three years ago. The 145-meter long, over 68-hundred ton ferry emerged from the dark seawater with its surface rusty and scratched. Given the size of the vessel it's a monumental task, and at the same time,... an expensive one too. The Korean government agreed two years ago to a deal worth some 76 billion U.S. dollars with a consortium led by China's state-run company Shanghai Salvage to raise the ferry. And the operation conducted both by Korea's oceans ministry and Shanghai Salvage is being carried out in a careful manner, as there are still nine victims missing and their bodies could still be inside the vessel. The reason why the engineers are taking the vessel out of the water *without cutting it into pieces, and have also cast a net around the ferry, is to help recover the bodies, believed to still be trapped inside. The marathon operation of lifting the sunken ferry above the water began with raising the ship 13 meters out of the water and placing the ferry onto a semi-submersible ship for transport. The sunken ferry will now be transported to Mokpo New Port, just 87 kilometers away from the disaster site. The transport is expected to take at least 8-days, depending on weather conditions. If all goes as planned, the recovered ship will be placed at Mokpo port and searched for the missing nine bodies as well as answers to what exactly caused this manmade disaster. "Three years of planning the recovery operation come down to 12 or 13 days of execution. And after that... it'll be time to start recovering the truth. Shin Se-min, Arirang News, Jindo. A briefing session by Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is being held. We'll have more from that event on our later newscast. 문 대통령, 집단체조 北 관람객 15만 명에 인사말 President Moon capped off the second day of the summit by attending perhaps North Korea's most famous cultural product, the Mass Games. Not only did he attend, he became the first South Korean leader to deliver a speech to a mass North Korean audience, in this case, numbering some 150-thousand people. We'll now listen to that in its entirety. Citizens of Pyeongyang, I am very glad to see you all here tonight. As the president of South Korea, I feel deeply honored to speak to you. As you can see with your own eyes, we are opening a new era together. My fellow Koreans, Chairman Kim Jong-un and I had an encounter full of meaning at Panmunjeom on April 27th. We had a warm embrace. And today, we have agreed that there will be no more war on the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, we have solemnly announced both to our 80 million fellow Koreans and to the international community that a new era of peace has dawned on the Peninsula. We have also affirmed the principle of national self-determination, that we ourselves will determine the fate of our people. Also, we have firmly promised to advance a future of common prosperity, to independently restore our blood-based ties, and to develop inter-Korean relations in a thorough and dramatic way. This fall, I, President Moon Jae-in, decided to make this trip to Pyeongyang. Dear citizens of Pyeongyang, Chairman Kim Jong-un and I have agreed specifically to completely eliminate the threat and fear of war on the Korean Peninsula. In addition, from Mt. Baekdusan to Mt. Hallasan, we promised to leave our future generations this beautiful land, free of nuclear weapons and nuclear threats. And we will quickly take steps to fundamentally end the suffering of separated families before it's too late. I send generous applause and thanks to Chairman Kim, who is walking along with me towards a new future. Dear citizens of Pyeongyang, on this visit, I have witnessed the remarkable development of this city. I have seen the kind of nation you are trying to build, how much you strive for peace and your bravery in hard times. Dear fellow citizens, we are great. We are strong. We love peace. And we should live together. We lived together for over 5,000 years and have been separated for 70 years. I propose today to completely end this 70-year separation and take a big step towards peace. Chairman Kim and I will firmly join hands and work to build a new fatherland. Let us move into a new future together. I would like to thank the many Pyeongyang citizens, young people, students and children who have warmly welcomed our delegation. Thank you. Goodbye, Yu-na: Queen steps down from ice

02:27
Over the long holiday weekend, that included Children's Day and Buddha's Birthday,... Koreans bade farewell to Kim Yu-na -- the beloved star who not only made history in Korean figure skating, but in the sport itself. Our Song Ji-sun brings Queen Yu-na's last official performance on ice. "It wasn't the rankings or points that brought me back to the ice." "It was you, everyone - who were always there for me. Thank you." 17 years of competition... on ice. Olympic and world champion Kim Yu-na has been waiting for this moment for a very, very long time -- to close her chapter as a competitive skater. And for her last gala, she transformed into a princess who can't sleep taking the ice with the opera Turandot -- one that she always wanted to skate to. From her signature Yu-na camel spin to triple jumps -- her skating is flawless like it always has been. Even though she steps down from the competitive spotlight, skaters believe unanimously... that there has not been, and may never be, another perfect skater like Kim. "I have such respect for you and for all that you've done, and to come back and skate the way you skated. It was even better. And you were, to me, the best. You've just changed the sport. So thank you, for what you've given to the sport." It is time to say goodbye, but it's hard for the fans to see the queen leave the ice, as she has been a mainstay of hope and inspiration to her audiences. Kim, who already donated to the UNICEF for the Sewol-ho ferry victims,... spared a minute of silence before the start of the show. "Her performance is a great consolation to the nation, especially at a time when it's in sorrow and like now. I wish her all the best for her future." The figure skater who always stood on the podium in every competition she entered in, now has a future entirely open to herself, in which she said, figure skating will always be some part of. "Even after the Olympics, I trained as usual... to give the best in this ice show for my fans. As for the future, I will take things slow, take some rest as it's really over now." "Kim Yu-na let go of her status as national skater as of Tuesday, to mark the beginning of her new life, away from competitive skating. Song Ji-sun, Arirang News.

More Koreans living minimalist lifestyles

02:01
버릴수록 행복하다... '미니멀라이프' 유행 A growing number of people in Korea are choosing a minimalist lifestyle. The new trend is possibly a strong reaction to the prevailing tendency toward excessive consumption in Korean society. Hwang Ho-jun explains why less is more. Many working women come home at the end of the day only to spend their free time on household chores. That's why this teacher, wife, mother and dog owner decided to get rid of everything but the essentials in her home. She started with the piles of clothes she had not been wearing for years, then moved on to her flowerpots and the rest. In just one month, she was able to get rid of about 500 items that she either tossed, donated or gave away. Now, it's been three years, and she says she's found happiness from getting rid of useless items and focusing more on things she cares about. "My criteria for happiness have changed. Before, I wanted to own everything other people had and found happiness in buying new things. Now, I like sharing." This year, tens of thousands of Koreans have joined in the movement to declutter their homes and live a more minimalist lifestyle. One online community devoted to decluttering has over 45-thousand registered users, and more books on the subject are being published. Experts say the trend seems like an effort to find an alternative to the tendency toward excessive consumption, with more people thinking about the idea of responsible consumption. "It seems as though we are moving from an era of luxury to one of value. It's a combination of self-reflection on consumerism and an emphasis on various methods of ethical consumption." Although many people remain skeptical that the trend will seep into the mainstream, it has already encouraged more people to pare their belongings so they can focus on finding new ways to bring meaning and happiness into their lives. North Korea soldier makes daring defection to South Korea across JSA

02:02
판문점 JSA초소서 북한군1명 귀순…北총격 받고 긴급후송 A North Korean soldier defects to the South in the most unexpected way: Crossing the border at the heavily guarded Joint Security Area. As troops stationed in the frontline are believed to be chosen for their loyalty, this could severely bruise the regime's military pride. He was shot at by men from his side, but was picked up by South Korean soldiers and was taken to the hospital. For details on the daring escape, we turn to our Kwon Jang-ho The Joint Security Area -- located on the border between the two Koreas and the only place where soldiers from the two sides stand face-to-face. And at three-thirty-one PM on Monda, a lone North Korean soldier ran from a guard post on the northern side, and crossed over the Military Demarcation Line into South Korean territory. The soldier suffered from gunshot wounds to his shoulder and elbow from North Korean forces while defecting. Upon hearing the shots, South Korean soldiers raised the alarm, but the defector was not discovered until 25 minutes later, collapsed on the ground, 50-meters from the border and bleeding from his wounds. (Korean) Our soldiers safely retrieved the defector, and urgently evacuated him to hospital to treat his injuries. He was airlifted by a United Nations Command helicopter to Ajou University Medical Center in Suwon, just south of Seoul, where he underwent surgery. The defector is thought to be in his twenties or thirties, and wore a uniform of low rank. Defecting through the JSA is extremely rare, with only two previous instances in 1998 and 2007. South Korean authorities have reassured that there was no altercation between South and North Korean soldiers, but added that Seoul will remain alert to any possible provocations. It's been almost two months since North Korea last carried out a ballistic missile test, or any other provocation, and many have hoped that this signalled an easing of tensions on the peninsula. It's currently unclear what response Pyongyang will give to Monday's incident. Kwon Jang-ho, Arirang News. Boyband BTS recognized for developing Korea's national culture

02:25
평균나이 23.7세' 방탄소년단(BTS), 최연소 문화훈장 수훈 K-pop boyband BTS are back on homesoil after a highly successful American and European World Tour that saw them perform in front of hundreds of thousands of fans. The seven-member group was in Seoul on Wednesday to receive a prestigious cultural medal awarded by the South Korean government. Won Jung-hwan reports. Another big achievement for BTS. The sensational boyband has received one of the Korean government's prestigious medals for culture -- the fifth rank of the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit. It's given to those who have contributed to the development of the national culture -- in the case of BTS, for helping spread Korean culture and the Korean alphabet Hangeul around the world. The band went to accept the medal Wednesday in Seoul at the 9th Korea Entertainment Awards, a ceremony run by the ministry of culture. With an average age of less than 24 years old,... the members of BTS have become the youngest ever recipients of the cultural medal,... an honor higher than even a commendation from the president. It had been given previously only to artists who'd worked for an average of around 50 years. "Thank you. When we go abroad, we see a lot of people singing along to our songs and studying our language, Hangeul. We feel very proud, and we promise we will continue to promote our culture to the world." Only twice before has the medal been given for promoting Korean culture -- in 2008 to actor Bae Yong-joon, and in 2012 to popstar PSY. Their fans are outspoken about why they love the band so much. "They are very real. Very many celebrities especially in America where we are from, its hard to get in touch what they are feeling. They rarely express what they are going through, and BTS is so fluent with everything, transparent, they don't seem to hide anything." "They just seem like they are having a lot of fun doing what they are doing. A lot of celebrities look like its fake but they seem like they are really enjoying it, looks like its real from behind the scene." With one more prestigious decoration on their shelf, BTS will resume their world tour, called "Love Yourself," with concerts scheduled for next month in Japan. Won Jung-hwan, Arirang News. Global companies closing factories in China

′세계의 공장′ 중국에 부는 ′탈중국′ 바람

02:03
More and more global companies are packing up and pulling their factories out of China,... raising concerns the country′s manufacturing industry could be spiraling down a dangerous path. As labor costs rise and economic growth contracts,... China has lost its position as the go-to place to invest. Kim Min-ji reports. Japanese watch-maker Citizen recently shut down its factory in Guangzhou. More than one-thousand employees are up in arms after being laid off,... but the company says it′s part of its restructuring plans. Citizen isn′t the only one. U.S. software giant Microsoft has also shut down its Nokia factory in Guangzhou,... and plans to open a new factory in Vietnam. And with the Beijing factory also expected to close,... some 9-thousand employees are expected to lose their jobs. Industry watchers estimate more than 100 large factories, including ones run by Sharp and Panasonic, were shut down before the Chinese New Year in the city of Dongguan one of the country′s main manufacturing hubs. But what has triggered the mass exodus? Experts say rising labor and land costs. Such factors no longer make China a profitable investment. What′s more is that the world′s second largest economy is not expanding as fast as it used to. Another factor is that countries in Southeast Asia, such as India and Vietnam,... are stepping up efforts to lure foreign companies. The U.S., Japan and Europe are also offering incentives, such as tax cuts and investment support, to encourage home-grown companies to come back. The trend has raised concerns that China′s manufacturing industry,... once driven by cheap labor,... is heading for a crisis. The official Purchasing Managers′ Index stood at 49-point-8,... falling below 50 for the first time in more than two years,.... signalling a contraction. Kim Min-ji, Arirang News.

The Simple Life

04:57
심플라이프 Minimalism is a hot keyword for 2017 in Korea. Minimalism refers to a simple lifestyle which eliminates the unnecessary in everything from objects to human relations. We look into the social phenomena brought about by the minimalism trend. This is an apartment located in Seoul. The house of Seon Hye-rim , who married 4 years ago, features few objects but lots of empty space. The only things in the living room are a decorative stand, a table, and an air conditioner. It’s because she is a minimalist, who has been practicing the minimalism lifestyle for 2 years. (Korean) "When we got home, we felt as if we had to work, instead of experiencing rest. We argued often, and cleaning up was difficult. This led us naturally to a minimal life." ( .) The first order of business upon deciding on a change in lifestyle was to part with precious belongings. Thanks to 2 years of effort, only the bare necessities are left. There was some concern that this could cause discomfort, but the gains have far outweighed the losses. (Korean) "With a minimal life, it’s important to organize space first, and then to determine the items which befit that space. For example, the number of hangers in a closet is pre-determined. Only clothing which fits the hangers is then stored." ( . .) The recent minimalism trend emerged around 2010. It was largely thanks to Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus of the U.S. In Japan, minimalism emerged as a new, alternate lifestyle in the wake of the 2011 East Japan earthquake. Hot on the heels of the U.S. and Japan, the minimalism trend has also made its way to Korea. What’s the reason for minimalism’s global appeal? (Korean) "It’s a cloud lifestyle, similar to storing files on a cloud server. Even without having something in my home, I can consume in the form of taking it out whenever I need it. This is becoming a global trend." ( .) Some analysts believe the rise of single person households led to minimalism’s rapid expansion. Meanwhile, the minimalist trend is changing industry overall. Electronics makers are targeting the market with small but useful products. (Korean) "In the past, customers preferred bigger, large-scale appliances. Now, their appliance purchase preferences lean toward simple and personally-tailored items." ( , .) Simple lifestyles are leading to simplified consumption. Experts cite this as the positive effective of minimalism.

Curtain comes down on 2018 Asian Games with closing ceremony

02:39
2018 아시안게임 성황리에 폐막, 항저우에서 다시 만나요 After more than two weeks of sporting action featuring the best athletes from across the continent,... the curtain came down on the 18th Asian Games on Sunday with a glittering closing ceremony. South Korea finished with 49 golds to rank third in medal table behind China and Japan. That's 16 short of the country's target, but there were still plenty of reasons to celebrate. Won Jung-hwan reports. For the past 16 days,.... Jakarta and Palembang, the co-host cities of the 2018 Asian Games, hosted more than eleven-thousand athletes from 45 nations competing for 465 gold medals in 40 sports. On Sunday,... the Games came to a triumphant close in Jakarta. If the opening ceremony wowed the audience for the richness of Indonesia's heritage,… the closing ceremony was more modest in scale, but extravagant in its liveliness. It was a celebration of athletes from different countries that highlighted the culture of not just Indonesia but other Asian nations as well. Bonding the nations together was the power of music. K-pop superstars iKON and Super Junior took to the stage, turning the evening into a spectacular concert that was well received by the crowd. But before the singers stole the show, some of the athletes came out to say goodbye to fans in Indonesia and thank them for their support. While there wasn't a formal parade of athletes at the closing ceremony,… the two Koreas marched in together just like they did at the opening ceremony. The two flag bearers, South Korean Suh Hyo-won and North Korean Choe Il of the North, came in hand-in-hand to big cheers. South and North Korea competed as one in three sports -- canoeing, rowing and women's basketball. And they far outstripped expectations,... winning four medals, including a gold in women's dragon boat racing and a silver in women's basketball. Sending a congratulatory message to Indonesia for successfully hosting the Asian Games,… South Korean President Moon Jae-in highlighted the performances by the joint Korean teams. He said he believes the deep sound of Arirang, Korea's most popular folk song, will bring the two together again. As the curtain came down in Jakarta,... athletes will start preparing for the next Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2022. It will be the third Chinese city to host the competition, after Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010. Won Jung-hwan, Arirang News. Philippine troops battle Islamists in besieged city of Marawi

01:54
필리핀 정부군, IS추종 반군 점령 소도시 공습 The Philippine army says it has so far killed more than 30 Islamic State-linked extremists as fighting continues for a third day in the southern island of Mindanao. The island has been under martial law since Tuesday and thousands of the residents in a besieged city have been evacuated. Ro Aram reports. The fighting started Tuesday when the Philippine army tried to raid the house of Isnilon Hapilon, leader of the extremist group Abu Sayyaf. However, the troops' failed attempt to capture Hapilon, who is on the FBI’s most wanted list, set off a violent backlash as a militant group known as the Maute started firing back. The chaos prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law in the country's second-largest island, and he is now considering expanding it nationwide. Helicopters and special forces were mobilized to flush out extremist rebels in the besieged city of Marawi, where both the Maute and followers of Hapilon burned down several buildings and took churchgoers hostage to be used as human shields. Both groups have pledged allegiance to the so-called Islamic State, which claimed responsibility late on Wednesday for Maute’s activities via its Amaq news agency. The White House condemned the Maute group as “cowardly terrorists” and said the United States was a proud ally of the Philippines and backed its fight against extremism. Military leaders say about 15 security forces and just over 30 militants have died so far in the urban fighting, which has prompted most of the 200-thousand Marawi residents to flee the city. Meanwhile, due to the on-going conflict, Seoul's foreign ministry has issued a travel warning to Mindanao.... urging Koreans to reschedule or cancel any planned trips to the region. What caused the ship to sink?

02:10
More clues are emerging about what might have caused the Sewol-ho ferry to sink. Kim Min-ji reports on three possible scenarios that occurred one-by-one. Around 8.30 am on Wednesday, April 16th,... the Sewol-ho ferry passed through treacherous waters,... which are notorious here in Korea for their strong currents. Eighteen minutes later,... the ferry veers suddenly,... which has been pointed to as the first factor in the sinking. The stern is believed to have turned 80-degrees to the right. "What it means by the vessel supposedly making a P-turn is that the helm was turned to the right,... then back again,... but the boat didn't come back to its original position. Operations momentarily froze,... which results in the ferry making a complete turn." Due to centrifugal force,... the vessel tilts to the left. Now this is when the second factor may have come in. Grips holding down the ferry's freight may have come lose,... causing containers and vehicles in the cargo compartment to list sharply to one side. The weight concentrated on just one side of the ferry,... causes it to tilt even further. If the vessel had enough dynamic stability,... the vessel could have bounced back to the other side and maintained balance. However, due to renovations to increase the vessel's capacity,... the center of gravity on the ship had been raised from its original design. "Due to the expansion of the ship,... the upper structure has been changed,... making the center of gravity much higher. If the center of gravity and buoyancy are far apart,... the dynamic stability decreases." Experts say the reduced dynamic stability caused the vessel to completely submerge,... because it wasn't able to recover from the initial tilt. They add that the Sewol-ho ferry may not have had enough ballast water,... which maintains the balance of the vessel,... in order to carry more cargo. As all three factors could have been prevented,... experts say the sinking will likely be attributed to human error. Kim Min-ji, Arirang News.

North Korea replaces security forces at JSA over soldier's defection

02:01
北, JSA 병력 대부분 교체...판문점 귀순 문책 North Korea has reportedly replaced most... or even all,... of its soldiers stationed at the Joint Security Area in the truce village of Panmunjom. This comes after their collective failure to stop a soldier's defection to South Korea. Park Jong-hong has the details. Most or all of the 40 North Korean border security officials at the Joint Security Area have been switched out. This is according to an unnamed South Korean intelligence official who also suggested that senior level officials may have been reprimanded for the failure to stop a soldier from defecting across the border. The surveillance video made public by the United Nations Command on Wednesday shows the defector's dramatic escape and North Korean soldiers shooting dozens of rounds at him as he fled. The UN Command noted North Korea's breach of the Armistice Agreement. "They violated the Armistice Agreement by ... one, firing weapons across the MDL and two, by actually crossing the MDL temporarily." The defector is said to be in stable condition after two major surgeries on the gunshot wounds he sustained. After the rare defection through the JSA, many believe North Korean commanders and senior level officials will most likely be held accountable. In contrast, six South Korean and U.S. soldiers were awarded Army Commendation Medals by General Vincent Brooks, the commander of the UN Command. Meanwhile, in the wake of the defection, North Korea has temporarily sealed off the 72-Hour Bridge, the only road that connects the North to the northern side of the JSA. Driving a military jeep at high speed, it took the defector less than a minute to cross the bridge. The measure is apparently intended to tighten security and screen troops coming in and out of the area. Park Jong-hong, Arirang News. "Yeong-mi!" S. Korea's curling 'girl group' creates sensation during the Olympics

02:21
“영미! 영미!” 국민스포츠 된 여자 컬링 With the screams "Yeong-mi" echoeing through the stadium becoming increasingly familiar, the Korean women's curling team was arguably the biggest fan favorite in this Olympics. Other than being virtually unbeatable, their unique style, characteristics, team chemistry and contagious enthusiasm clearly set the ladies apart from their competitors. Lee Jeong-yeon gets us better acquainted with the curlers that rose from relative obscurity... to coming close to winning gold while elevating the popularity of the once obscure sport. Korean women's curling team garnered a lot of international attention at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, with the foreign press coming up with nicknames such as 'Team Kim,' as all the members' last names are 'Kim,'.... and the better-known 'Garlic Girls,'... referring to their garlic-producing home county of Uiseong. According to local media however, the members did not take such a liking to these nicknames and decided to come up with their own. They each took a name from their breakfast menu: Kim Yeong-mi came up with 'Pancake,' Kim Seon-yeong was 'Sunny' after sunny-side-up eggs, Kim Eun-jung was known as 'Annie,' a brand of yogurt, Kim Kyeong-ae was 'Steak,' and Kim Cho-hi, a.k.a. 'Cho cho,' after chocolate. Another name that's going down in history is 'Yeong-mi,' one of the member's names. 'Yeong-mi,' 'Yeong-mi,' 'Yeong-mi ' The public has come with their own interpretations for the different ways in which Kim Eun-jung yelled out this name. 'Yeong-mi' refers to 'start sweeping according to the direction of the stone's movement,' 'Yeong-mi ya~' refers to 'stop sweeping and wait,' a frantic 'Yeong-mi ya ' means 'sweep as fast as you can,' and a repeated 'Yeong-mi, Yeong-mi, Yeong-mi' is 'you can stop sweeping now.' Korea saw many firsts at this year's PyeongChang Winter Olympics,... including Korea's recently discovered prowess in curling after the women's team took the world by storm and bringing home the silver, an unprecedented feat for an Asian team. The team helped curling turn from what was one of the most unfamiliar games for Koreans at the beginning of the Olympics,... into a head-turner for the nation. Now with peaked interest in the discipline thanks to the astonishing performance of Annie, Pancake, Sunny, Steak and Cho Cho, the world is already expecting to see more milestones set by this incredible team four years down the road. N. Korean leader Kim Jong-un, wife attend performance by South Korean art troupe in Pyongyang

03:00
남한 예술단, 13년만에 평양에서 공연... 김정은 부부 참석 The first of two special concerts by South Korean artists visiting Pyongyang wrapped up. Among the guests were the regime's leader and his wife. Kim Jong-un reportedly enjoyed it so much, he suggested holding another one in autumn. Oh Jung-hee zooms in on the response to the first such show across the border in this decade. For the first time in 13 years,... Sunday night, a group of South Korean musicians put on a concert in Pyongyang,... dazzling an audience that included North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Kim was accompanied by a few well-known faces: his wife Ri Sol-ju,... his sister Kim Yo-jong, who visited South Korea in February for the Winter Olympics,... and Hyon Song-wol who led the North Korean delegation in talks to set up the show. It started at around 6:20 PM, North Korea time -- that's 6:50 PM in the South -- and lasted for over 2 hours. It was called "Spring is Coming," and featured eleven South Korean artists... including Cho Yong-pil, Lee Sun-hee, the idol group Red Velvet,... and Seo Hyun of Girls' Generation. "I hope this concert gives us a chance to truly feel that we are one." The South Koreans sang to a full house -- 15-hundred seats -- songs representing the fact of the two Koreas' division. They ended with two numbers called "Our Hope is Reunification" and "Until We Meet Again." "When we South Korean artists all sang together, the North Koreans sang along with us. That made me feel that we are one people. It was touching, and that's why I teared up." As he watched,... Kim Jong-un reportedly said... there should be more cultural and art performances put on by Seoul and Pyongyang. He also suggested holding another concert in the autumn -- this time in Seoul -- which would signify that the two Koreas are seeing "fruitful results" from their diplomatic push. Kim's attendance was a surprise to many, but there were clues that it might happen' the start time was changed twice on the day of the concert. His original plan, reportedly, was to attend on Tuesday... a joint performance by both South and North Korean artists -- but he had schedule conflicts. But his sudden appearance, which naturally came with strict security,... prevented most of the South Korean journalists from covering the concert. Kim entered the concert hall when he South Korean press were outside,... and without notifying the reporters, the performance began right away. Only one cameraman stayed inside throughout the performance... while the rest had to watch it on a television in a nearby room. Afterwards, the North Korean side apologized,... explaining that their exclusion wasn't intentional but the result of a lack of communication. The South Korean artists will hold a joint performance with their North Korean counterparts on Tuesday afternoon... before returning to Seoul. Oh Jung-hee, Arirang News. BTS-mania boon for businesses as well as band

02:50
방탄소년단 신드롬, 기업들에도 청신호? K-pop band BTS are taking a well-deserved break following their huge, sell-out tour of Europe and the United States. While the guys can take a little while to recharge their batteries, there's one thing that never stops: the band's ability to churn out huge profits for themselves and the companies they put their names and faces to. Seo Eun-kyung reports on how BTS-mania is a major boon for businesses as well as the band. 2018 has been the biggest year yet for BTS, who've won international acclaim. But their influence is not limited to the music industry. BTS has proved extremely valuable to numerous companies, which are enjoying a sales bonanza thanks to BTS-themed products. One of Asia's most popular messenger apps has a bunch of BTS-themed characters called BT21, which were inspired by the band members' drawings of themselves and by their personality traits. Right away, the characters were a huge hit at home and abroad. Stores in Seoul that sell BT21 products are packed with people from all over the world. "We just came by to see characters created by BTS. I really like KOALA, KOYA." When BT21 products first went on sale overseas, the flagship store in New York got more than 30-thousand visitors and the one in Harajuku got more than 15-thousand on opening day alone. The characters' popularity prompted Facebook to add BT21 emojis and AR effects to its Messenger service, where they got a staggering 800-thousand views in just one day. "The K-pop group is also the face of a range of cosmetics as companies hope the boyband's popularity boosts their sales." An up-and-coming Korean cosmetics brand has been working with BTS for two years now. Last year, the company released a BTS-themed collagen foundation and a toothbrush... which drew huge crowds to their stores in Japan. And this month, they introduced 47 new products featuring BT21 characters and saw sales go through the roof. "BTS fans in their 20s and early 30s visit our stores a lot." Despite the economic windfall BTS has brought these companies, there are risks for the band. Singapore hosting first-ever N. Korea-U.S. summit -- why Singapore?

02:17
북미정상회담 개최지가 싱가포르인 이유 From Switzerland to the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom... there were numerous nominees. But in the end it was the tiny but mighty island city that was chosen as the backdrop for the upcoming summit. Oh Jung-hee outlines some of the reasons that make Singapore an ideal venue for the historic event. Out of several candidate locations, it's finally down to one: Singapore. What makes Singapore a favorable location for both Pyongyang and Washington is that the Southeast Asian country is diplomatically neutral. It has good relations with North Korea and the U.S., and both countries have embassies there. Before international sanctions took full effect early last year,... Singapore had been at the center of North Korea's overseas economic activities. But at the same time, it is also home to a U.S. naval base,... where American ships and aircraft make regular visits... and several are stationed. Singapore is also close enough to North Korea for the regime's planes to make a non-stop flight. And the country is well-practiced in hosting international events,... with the Asia Security Summit Shangri-La Dialogue taking place every year. The U.S. actually preferred Singapore more than North Korea did, due to Singapore's security and infrastructure... as well as the political burden that would follow if the summit were held at Panmunjom or Pyongyang. And as North Korea has close relations with Singapore,... it seems that Pyongyang chose not to drag on with a tug-of-war over the summit location but jump into the real business of the talks. "Basically, it's difficult for North Korea to grant a so-called 'big present' to the U.S., which would be complete denuclearization. And in that sense, there's no reason for President Trump to set his foot in Pyongyang. Third countries would have been considered, but China, Russia, and Mongolia which are geographically close to North Korea aren't much of a favorable choice for the U.S." Singapore's foreign ministry welcomed the decision, saying the country is pleased to host the summit talks between President Trump and North Korea's Kim. It added the country hopes the summit serves to (quote)"advance prospects for peace" on the Korean Peninsula. Oh Jung-hee, Arirang News. Korean researchers to mass produce micro-LED

01:51
마이크로 LED 대량생산 눈앞, 한국 기계 연구원 Korean researchers developed a method to mass produce micro-LED displays, The display is highly efficient compared to the existing OLED or LCD screens..., and with a new technology to manufacture them, researchers say it won't be long before the display is used for smartphone screens. Lee Un-shin reports. A screen display to replace LCD and OLED screens will soon be available for commercial uses in a global market. Researchers at the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials came up with a technology to manufacture micro-LED displays, using roll-to-roll processing,... a procedure for creating electronic devices on plastic or metal roll. "Current technology can transfer 2 LEDs per second, but with our micro-LED technology, 40,000 LEDs can be transferred per second." The widely used LCD and OLEDs are limited in terms of energy consumption and flexibility. Micro-LEDs however, use 50-percent of the power, and have 3-times the luminous potential of a standard OLED,... meaning that given the same electricity consumption, micro-LEDs are 2 to 3 times brighter. They can also be morphed into just about any shape, while allowing for higher-resolution screens... making them ideal for digital billboards. "First this could be applied to wearable tech gadgets like smart watches, next onto displays or glasses, and it will used in augmented reality or virtual reality displays." Market research firm MarketsandMarkets, expects the micro-LED market to jump from 250 million U.S. dollars this year to some 20 billion U.S. dollars by 2025,... most of which will be accounted for by the display sector. Taiwanese Kpop group member sets off cross-Strait political row

02:02
쯔위 사태 일파만파 The controversy surrounding a Taiwanese member of a K-pop girl-group continues. The teenage pop star waved a Taiwanese flag on a Korean TV show and has sparked a cross-Strait political row. Park Ji-won reports. It all started with a waving of Taiwanese flag on a Korean entertainment program,... after 16-year old K-pop group member Tzu-yu,.. born and raised in Taiwan,... introduced her homeland to the Korean viewers. It was innocuous enough to Koreans,... but not to Chinese viewers. The Taiwanese flag is considered a symbol of Taiwan's pro-independence movement,... the teenage pop star released a video apology last Friday,... saying she feels deep remorse for her actions,... and stressed there is only one China. The K-pop star's agency JYP also released an apology statement the same day,.saying the agency was not prudent enough with regards to the sensitivity of the matter. Taiwanese citizens expressed anger over the teenage singer's apology on the day of its presidential election a day after the video was uploaded. It became a main issue during the election over the weekend,... and analysts said the flag row may have widened the main opposition's victory margin by some one percent. The main opposition party is skeptical about closer ties with Beijing,... gaining a majority in the parliament for the first time. "We need to make sure the world realizes that there is nothing wrong with waving the Taiwanese flag. It's not something that should be condemned." With the flag-row deepening,... Taiwanese citizens are organizing a massive protest on Sunday,... and about 10-thousand people have expressed willingness to join the movement. Amid the controversy, the official website of JYP,.. Taiwanese teen's Korean agency,... was hacked over the weekend. The website remains down,... and the agency says at the moment,..it does not know the source of the cyber attack. Kim Jong-nam's son says his father was murdered

02:15
김한솔 주장 인물, 유튜브 등장…"아버지 살해됐다" The son of Kim Jong-nam, the murdered half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, has claimed his father was murdered... in a new video posted online. Our Hwang Hojun reports. A YouTube video emerged on Tuesday featuring a man claiming to be the son of Kim Jong-nam, the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. "My name is Kim Han Sol, from North Korea, part of the Kim family." Korea's National Intelligence Service says it has confirmed the man is Kim Jong-nam's son. In the video, titled "KHS Video," the man displays his passport to prove his identity, but most of it is blacked out. He then claims his father was murdered, dismissing North Korea's claims to the contrary. "My father has been killed a few days ago. I'm currently with my mother and my sister. We are very grateful to..." ...and the audio cuts off. The 40-second-long video was uploaded onto the YouTube page of a group called Cheollima Civil Defense, which also uploaded it to its website. The group claims that it will help and protect anyone who wishes to flee from North Korea and says that it has already done so for many people without seeking any rewards. The group posted a statement along with the video that says the group is protecting members of Kim's family upon their request,... adding that "the present whereabouts of this family will not be addressed." It also said this is its first and last statement on the matter. The group also thanked countries that it claimed helped it provide protection for Kim's family, including the Netherlands, China, the U.S. and an unnamed fourth country. The group also singled out Netherlands ambassador to South Korea for his involvement and humanitarian response. Kim Jong-nam was killed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport last month by two suspects carrying the deadly nerve agent VX. North Korea has repeatedly disparaged the investigation, accusing Malaysia of colluding with its enemies. It also wants the Malaysian government to hand over Kim Jong-nam's body, but Malaysia rejected the request, insisting that it can only be claimed by the person's his next-of-kin. The Secret to BTS's Success

06:28
분석! 방탄소년단의 성공 포인트 Could the K-pop group Bangtan Boys conquer the U.S. billboard charts? Their songs and powerful performances seem to have captivated fans across the globe, and they are picking up awards against Western artists. We take a look at the growing global fandom of K-pop culture. On May 21st, for the first time ever, a K-pop group won an award at the Billboard Music Awards in the U.S. The honorees were the Bangtan Boys, or BTS. "We still cannot believe that we are standing here on this stage at the Billboard Music Awards, oh my gosh. " Despite stiff competition from global pop stars like Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande, they took home the trophy for “Top Social Artist.” "BTS is worth noting because the group was successful in targeting the U.S. market, the world’s largest. This confirmed K-pop presence in the U.S. market to a degree. " BTS are experiencing worldwide popularity. What’s the secret to their success? In 2013, a new idol group took to the stage for the After School Club, one of the top programs on Arirang TV. The resonant message of their song and the powerful performances of the seven members drew an immediate response from fans around the world. "Generally BTS has a lot of energy...all the members are very energetic, so when they first came to ASC...they were about three months into their debut. And even though it's a live show...some groups, they get really nervous...because it's done in English and you have to interact with the international fans 1 to 1...but with BTS, based on their good chemistry with the hosts...they are very lively...and they are very good with answering the fans' questions...that ultimately let the fans to really enjoy the show. " They were an idol group with a clear goal of targeting the global stage. "BTS was successful in the global stage, because of a different strategy. Most idol groups secured some recognition and market share domestically before going abroad. But BTS aimed to go overseas right from the group’s 2013 debut." The group immediately focused on overseas activities. Through a World Tour spanning North America, Europe and South America, and face-to-face meetings with fans, they expanded their fan base. Notoriously tough college entrance exams take place in Korea

수능 전국 1천212개 시험장서

02:44
It was the moment of truth for over 630-thousand students in Korea as they took this year′s college entrance exam. Known as suneung in Korean, the exam is one of the most important,... not ot mention stressful, events in a high school student′s life here in the country. And as the suneung is notoriously tough, everything feasible was done to make things easier for the young exam takers. Kwon Jang-Ho brings us this report. It was the annual college exam day in Korea. In the early morning, students arrived nervously at their designated test sites. They were cheered on by their schoolmates and given words of encouragement by their teachers, while parents watched anxiously as their children went in to face one of the most important moments of their lives. The public was also involved in making things easier for the exam takers. To ease the morning rush hour traffic, companies started work an hour late, including banks and the stock market. Additional buses, subway trains and taxis were put in service,... and even planes were grounded for 35 minutes during the listening comprehension portion of the exam. The police also helped out, providing emergency rides for students who found themselves running late. Younger students were doing their part as well. It has become a tradition for students to cheer on their upperclassmen on exam day. Such was the case of this group that waited since 9 p.m. of the previous day. We wanted to save the best spot from where we could cheer them. I′ve been up all night and of course I′m tired, but if it′s for our seniors, then I am always ready and willing. Many students study day in and night out for months and even years for this exam, leading to criticism that the exam puts too much burden on students. I am jealous of students in other countries. They don′t go through the same hardships as we do. They may take exams but they′re not as extreme as ours...I wish I could go to those countries. And after all that studying, it all comes down to just one single day. ″The whole of a student′s life hangs in the balance of how you feel on one day...I hope a better system can be introduced in the future.″ The Korean and Math sections are said to have been difficult this year, while the English portion was a bit more forgiving. But it will be a few weeks before the students find out the results. The exam results will be released on December 2nd. Until then, the students will have a long nervous wait, but for now at least it’s over. Kwon Jang-Ho, Arirang News.

Korean families are separated again after short three-day reunion

이산가족 눈물의 이별

03:20
Turning now to the last day of inter-Korean reunions at the Mount Kumgang resort in North Korea. The first group of war-separated families has said their goodbyes on the third and final day of the first stage of the reunion event. For a vivid recap of this emotionally-charged day, we turn to Connie Kim. It′s yet another heartbreaking goodbye…. Eyes are filled with tears and hands are tightly held, as families hold onto their final moments before being separated again, possibly forever. ″There is nothing more to wish for. We have to meet again and again and again. That′s all there is left. I don′t wish for anything more.″ This is probably the last time Lee Jeong-sook will see her father. She whispers something she′s always had in her heart, but has been unable to say for so long. ″I′ll love you forever, Dad.″ For everyone, it′s a dream come true,... but one that was far too short. ″I never imagined you′d be alive and that we′d get to meet.″ It′s an emotional time,... a time they will remember forever. Afraid of not being able to say everything on the last day, one man had written his father a letter several pages long. ″Thank you so much. Let′s meet again when the two Koreas are reunified.″ In their final session, family pictures were taken for the first time in more than 60 years, family trees were reconstructed, and some families exchanged promise rings as mementos of their time together. For these families, every minute must have felt like a second,... and all too soon an announcement tells them the time they′ve been wanting to avoid,.... has finally come. ″We′re sorry, but the reunions will come to an end in 10 minutes.″ On the buses, ready to depart, the families reach out for one another,... trying to hold on until the last possible moment. ″You have to stay healthy. Promise me you will stay alive until reunification″ ″I love you.″ ″Please stay well so we can meet again.″ As they say their last goodbyes, there are cries of sorrow, as the families don′t know when,... or if,... this will be their last embrace. As the buses move away,... it′s too hard to bear for many... and some are unable to speak. So far 19-thousand Koreans have been reunited with one another, but given the timing, it′s estimated that the majority of separated family members will have passed away within the next 25 years. ″For everyone to be reunited with their loved ones, at least six thousand people must meet every year. That′s led to growing calls for the reunions to be held on a regular basis, beyond the politics of the two Koreas. Connie Kim, Arirnag News.″

Sewol-ho ferry arrives at Mokpo New Port

02:34
침몰 3년만에 항구로 가는 세월호…오후 목포신항 도착 The Sewol-ho ferry has arrived at its final destination of Mokpo -- almost three years after it sank in waters off Korea's southwestern coast,... leaving 304 people dead. The vessel will soon undergo an investigation to find the exact cause of the disaster,... and hopefully recover the remains of the nine bodies that are still unaccounted for. For the latest,... let's go live to our Kim Min-ji, who is at Mokpo New Port, where the vessel has just docked. Min-ji, the semi-submersible transporting the ferry arrived sooner than expected? That's right, Daeun The semi-submersible -- with the Sewol-ho on board -- arrived here at Mokpo New Port just about an hour ago. The vessel's last voyage comes one-thousand-80 days after it capsized off Korea's southwestern coast.... and six days after it was salvaged from the sea. The semi-submersible covered a distance of about 105 kilometers today. The journey was initially expected to take about eight hours,... but took about two hours less than that. The ferry was escorted by five maritime police patrol ships,... and some of the relatives of the nine missing passengers still unaccounted for followed behind on a barge. Well it's good that there were no delays. Could you give us a rundown of what happens next? Sure. Over the course of about three days,... seawater and oil will be drained from the vessel and the ferry will be detached from the semi-submersible. That's expected to take some time because there are 50 attachment sites securing the ferry to the semi-submersible. Then a module transporter will be used to get the vessel onto land -- which will take about a day. So all in all, officials expect the transfer to take about four days in all,... provided the weather remains favorable and there are no problems with the equipment. After that, the vessel will be disinfected and fumigated, which is expected to take about a week. After that's complete, they will begin the search for the nine missing bodies... and an investigation into the exact cause of the sinking. The disaster left 304 people dead, most of them high school students, in April 2014. A special committee tasked with the investigation will work with the families of the missing to map out a search plan by early April. Da-eun? N. Korean cheering squad sightseeing in Gangneung on Tuesday

02:52
北응원단, 오늘 '강릉 나들이'…경포대•오죽헌 For the first time since arriving in South Korea last week, Pyongyang's cheerleaders had their first tour of the nation. Over in Gangneung, they did not say much,... but wherever they went, the team grabbed the attention of passersby. Lee Ji-won takes us to the scene. After a long day of supporting the Olympic athletes on Monday, the 229-member North Korean cheering squad had their first day off on Tuesday. They spent the day having a tour around Gangneung, one of the Olympic host cities. "The first destination for the North Korean cheering squad is Gyeongpo beach,... where dozens of spectators and reporters have gathered to get a glimpse of them." Reporters shouted questions to the troupe, but the squad members were careful in their responses. "The weather is good and it's refreshing." A number of them also jokingly complained that it's hard to enjoy the view with the reporters in their way. We came to see the beach, but with you ladies and gentlemen blocking the view, how can we? Let's talk after we enjoy the beach." But some also shared their hopes for unification. (Seeing South Korea), I can strongly feel that we are one. I hope we can bring ourselves together and build a united country. I believe it's what everyone hopes for. Without breaking formation, the North Koreans enjoyed the view from a pathway away from the beach,... and headed for lunch at a local convention center. The second stop was the Ojukheon House, where one of Korea's famous female artists lived and gave birth to a prominent Confucian scholar. But unlike at the previous stop, the cheering squad didn't answer any of the reporters' questions. And after a tour around the house they gathered at a square where the North Korean band members performed a number of songs,... including 'Arirang' and their signature song 'Ban-gap-sup-ni-da' or "Nice to meet you." "It's really touching to see their performance. I feel like unification is only a step away. North Korea's participation in the Winter Games was arranged very suddenly, but I feel like 2018 is going to be a year for the two Koreas to get closer to unification." Though people seemed to be surprised by the sudden encounter with the North Korean cheering squad, it was a chance for them to see the Koreans from the North and feel a sense of kinship. "It was a great experience. They smiled at us when our eyes met and they just looked like an average South Korean. Only by looking at the North Korean flag on their uniform could we tell that they were from the North." Having completed their tour, the North Korean cheering squad headed back to its hotel. The squad is next scheduled to cheer for the joint-Korean women's ice hockey team against Japan on Wednesday. Lee Ji-won, Arirang News, Gangneung. South and North Korea face off in hockey... but also come together on the ice

02:50
역사적인 남북 아이스하키대결…빙판 녹인 감동의 '통일 염원' The diplomatic relationship between South and North Korea continues to worsen, but on Thursday night, those differences were put to the side for an ice hockey match between the two in the South's Gangwon-do province. Kwon Jang-ho was there for the historic match and filed this report. Two Koreas, one rink. In a rare sporting contest between two sides technically still at war with each other, the South and North Korean women's ice hockey teams faced-off at the Gangneung Hockey Center on Thursday. It's the first time in three years that any athlete from the North has stepped foot on this side of the inter-Korean border, and the contest has been hotly anticipated. Another ballistic missile test carried out by Pyongyang earlier this week once again brought a dark cloud over the relationship, but that tension couldn't be found here. "Several thousand spectators have come to watch this rare inter-Korean clash. Of course there are no supporters who have come from North Korea, but what's noticeable is that the crowds are not only cheering for the home team." Many in the audience waved symbolic flags of a unified Korea -- as North Korean flags are banned in the South -- while singing and chanting songs of unification. There are many of our supporters, so it felt right to support North Korea. By cheering them on, it will hopefully give them strength. We are the same people so we should support both sides. We are one nation divided and I wanted my children to understand and experience that first hand. It was a physical and nervy game, but South Korea came out comfortable three-nothing winners. Although the disappointment was evident on the faces of the North Korean players, they were gracious in defeat, leaving a memorable impression on the audience and the South Korean players. "We are the same people, so to have had this duel here in Korea like this, makes me feel proud and good." "I was definitely a little more nervous for this game. I mean like you said, it is North Korea, so it's kind of more of a rivalry, so to say. So yea it definitely did feel...prepared a little different for this game but also trying to treat it like any other." A coincidence in international sporting schedules means another North-South clash is set to take place. The South Korean women's football team is currently in Pyongyang playing in the Asian Cup qualifiers, and will face the North Korean team on Friday. It'll be the first inter-Korean football match in North Korea for 27 years. Despite the ongoing geopolitical conflict between the two countries, sport continues to act as a meeting ground where the people from the two sides can connect. Kwon Jang-ho, Arirang News, Gangneung. U.S. B-52 bombers fly over South China Sea, angering Beijing

美 B-52 전략폭격기, 또 남중국해 비행...中, 강력 반발 Two U.S. B-52 bombers flew over the South China Sea this week,... infuriating Beijing. The move came a couple of days before U.S. defense chief James Mattis and his Chinese counterpart met to discuss a number of issues,... including their disputes in the hotly-contested area. Lee Seung-jae reports. Two B-52 U.S. bombers ripped over the South China Sea on Tuesday,... a move many say was a power play,... signaling Washington's determination to continue to fly and sail wherever international law allows. The move also came ahead of a key meeting between the defense chiefs of the U.S. and China on Thursday. While the Pentagon did not specifically identify which islands the aircraft flew by,... open-source flight tracking data shows they may have been near the Spratly Islands. That's the location of a recent showdown between a U.S. warship and a Chinese destroyer,... as two vessels nearly collided. Following that incident,... U.S. Vice President Mike Pence warned that his country "will not stand down". Watchers says the flight was intended to send a message that the U.S. will not change its behavior in response to China's aggression at sea,... while Beijing described the flights as "provocative". China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday that Beijing always respects and upholds the freedom of navigation and overflight enjoyed by other countries under international law. It added that it firmly opposes countries that act to undermine the sovereign and security interests of other countries and disrupt regional peace and stability under the pretext of 'freedom of navigation and overflight.' However, according to reports from the Associated Press,... the meeting between the defense chiefs was described as " straightforward and candid",... with Pentagon officials saying relations with the Chinese military may be stabilizing. The winner of the 17th Chopin Piano Competition was announced early Wednesday morning in Poland. A very young Korean pianist named Cho Seong-jin. Lee Soo-eun introduces us to the first Korean to win this world-renown competition. This is Cho Seong-jin. In Poland on Wednesday, this twenty-one-year-old became the first Korean pianist to win the prestigious International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. ″These days, I only play Chopin. I can see many things...his score. The Chopin competition helps the participant understand more about music by Chopin.″ After four hours of contemplation, the judging panel finally selected the Paris Conservatoire student from Korea over 77 other contestants from 19 countries. The concourse has been held every five years since 1927 in Warsaw in memory of the Polish composer, Fryderyk Chopin. It′s one of the top three music competitions in the world. ″He′s pretty much won every competition that a pianist needs to win. Never mind the domestic field, he was the youngest ever to win the Youth Chopin Competition and the first Asian to win the Hamamatsu Competition in 2009.″ The 37-thousand U.S. dollars prize money is a nice bonus... but more importantly, the young pianist Cho Seong-jin has achieved momentum for his musical career. It began with Wednesday′s gala show in Chopin′s home city of Warsaw.

Road to Rio: Taekwondo makes Olympic changes to upgrade its global reputation

04:08
가자 리우로: 올림픽 태권도 명성 높이기 위한 변화 It's been 28 years since the Korean martial art, Taekwondo, made its debut on the Olympic arena. Although its popularity has grown around the world since then, it's still under pressure to grow and improve, as another set of rule changes have been introduced for next month's Rio games. Kwon Jang-ho walks us through some of them and why for Taekwondo's governing body, change is good. Fast, powerful and gravity defying. Taekwondo is arguably one of the most dynamic and exciting martial arts in the world, and it's been an Olympic staple since it first appeared at the 1988 Seoul Games. But it's had to weather some difficult times. Inaccurate judging, overly-defensive tactics, and spectator dissatisfaction had fueled rumors of the sport being dropped from the Olympic lineup in the past. Taekwondo's governing body, the World Taekwondo Federation, has taken steps to address these issues over the last few years through rule changes, electronic scoring systems and video refereeing. A number of the new changes will be introduced at the Rio Olympics. The first thing audiences will notice is the ring. Before London 2012 it used to be a 10-by-10-meter square, and now it's changed to an 8-meter octagon. By taking off the corners and making it smaller, it's aimed at discouraging defensive tactics and making the fights more exciting. "With the octagon ring there's nowhere to hide, so you can't be constantly circling the ring to run away. So it does mean there will be more clashes." There are also other changes. "At the last Olympics, in order to make scoring more accurate, they introduced these electronic sensors in the footpads and body armor. This year they've also introduced sensors to the helmet." This is crucial, as a kick or a punch to the body is worth 1 to 3 points, but a kick to the head is worth 3 to 4 points. They've also upgraded the number of sensors in the footpads, but at the same time, they've upped the sensitivity threshold of the body armor, so only a cleaner, stronger hit will register as a point. As you can see here, that threshold is quite high, so the kinds of weaker, tactical kicks that drew criticism at the last Olympics won't work. "You need to be quick to find space to make your attack, and then you need power to make the hit count and score. So you need that combination of speed and power to get points." "All the athletes have been working a lot with the electronic scoring systems. I myself have been training to find the best way to register hits without wasting energy." The success of these changes has been deemed important for the credibility of the sport, as controversial decisions have plagued the sport in the past. "Fair and transparency of refereeing is very important. So we are really trying to encourage our international referees. We already did two time for the special referee seminars for the preparing for the Rio Olympic Games." Every Olympics has seen changes to the taekwondo format, but the president of the World Taekwondo Federation says they are needed in order for the sport to survive and keep growing. There are now 206 national taekwondo associations around the world, and the world's best competitors are no longer just in Korea, but hail from Great Britain to Iran and Uzbekistan. But to become a truly responsible and global body, the federation felt that it also had more work to do outside of the ring. Last year, it launched the Taekwondo Humanitarian Fund, which aims to bring the martial art to refugees in Jordan, Nepal and around the world, in order to empower and inspire... aspiring athletes. In the near future, Korea will not only be rooting for its taekwondo stars to win gold in Rio, it will also be looking for an exciting and successful tournament that can both elevate the reputation of the Korean martial art and further establish it as a truly global sport. Royal tombs of Joseon Dynasty, memory of royals live on

04:24
조선왕릉, 왕실의 영혼이 숨쉬는 곳 Korea boasts 40 royal tombs found across the nation... tombs of kings and queens of many generations of the Joseon Dynasty, which lasted over 500 years from 1392. They all remain intact and are uniquely historic sites amongst royal tombs. Their value is further enhanced by the fact that all the tombs of kings and queens who led the dynasty of an era have been preserved. Our Hwang Hojun examines The Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, Korea's UNESCO World Heritage. The tombs of the kings and queens of the 500-year-long Joseon Dynasty are not only landmarks of the final resting places of Korea's royalty, but also a source of inspiration and awe for the entire world. A special exhibition on the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty has been going on since June in the National Palace Museum, displaying excavated artifacts, and even a genuine royal coffin constructed during the Joseon regime. The exhibition, which will end on the 27th of this month, also serves to educate the viewers how the tombs were formed through the dynasty's renowned historical records of the royal rites. The construction of a royal tomb progressed along with the state funeral of the royal family member. It usually took about five to seven months from the death of the king or queen consort to the actual burial. During that time, the most propitious tomb site would be meticulously selected according to the pungsu-jiri, an ancient geographic divination. Then would come the grand funeral, with over 2000 palace personnel involved. The coffin would be placed 3 meters below the surface level, then covered by multiple layers of earth, lime, and a mixture of sticky soil. Thanks to this intricate and careful process, the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty have remained virtually untouched. There are 10 criteria that UNESCO uses to assess whether a heritage candidate has outstanding universal value. To be included on the World Heritage List, sites must meet at least one out of ten selection criteria. The royal tombs meet three of the criteria... because of their distinctive tradition, their outstanding architecture, and their 600 year-long annual ancestral worship. "It's unprecedented to have the tombs of an entire dynasty practically untouched and preserved. And it's also important to note that the ancestral rites have been continuing for about six hundred years." In other words, it's the hardware and the software that makes all forty sites worthy enough to be recognized as a world heritage by the UNESCO. The special exhibition also gives visitors a bird's-eye-view of the tomb and lets everyone learn about the structure of the tombs without physically being there through Virtual Reality. Among the 40 royal tombs scattered over the 18 locations in South Korea is Seonjeongneung, the tombs of King Seongjong and his wife Queen Jeonghyeon, and King Jungjong, located in Gangnam. The visitors are first greeted by Hongsalmun, a red gate with spikes, serving as the entrance to the sacred ground. It's from here, where the realms of the dead and the living meet. "The stone-covered path that leads up to the shrine is known as the worship road. The lower path is called Eodo, or the King's Road, while the higher path is called Sindo, or Spirit Road. Incense represented the spirit of the dead, so only the incense bearer could walk on the Spirit Road. That's why even today, visitors are only allowed to walk on the King's Road." On top of the hill is the burial mound, surrounded by stone-carved tigers, sheep, and military and civil officials guarding the tomb and protecting the deceased from evil spirits. All of these,... mostly how it was,.. half a millennium ago. "It's nice to see these cultural things have been preserved by Koreans and also makes me think that Koreans appreciate their cultural history." "For more than 500 years, the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty have honored the memory of Korea's ancestors. Today, the burial mounds and surrounding landscape offer a bit of serenity to those of us living in the concrete jungle. Reporting from Seonjeongneung. Hwang Hojun, Arirang News." Trump says June 12 Singapore summit back on after meeting with N. Korea's former spy chief

02:37
트럼프-김정은, 열흘뒤 싱가포르서 만난다…종전선언 가능성 Let's start with a major breakthrough between North Korea and the United States. This after a historic meeting inside the Oval Office on Friday. U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed -- after a long chat with Pyongyang's former spy chief -- that he WILL sit down with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore on June 12th,... less than two weeks from now. President Trump also signaled that a peace treaty could potentially be reached during the summit. Our Blue House correspondent Hwang Hojun starts us off. At least for now, the diplomatic tug-of-war seems to be over. "The meeting went very well. We'll be meeting on June 12th in Singapore." President Trump was speaking after his more than 90-minute-long meeting at the White House with Kim Yong-chol, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's top aide. Kim Yong-chol is the first senior North Korean official to visit the White House in 18 years. He presented a personal letter from Kim Jong-un to President Trump; the content of which has not been disclosed. The U.S. leader did not shy away from showing hospitality to his guest, escorting him around the White House grounds and personally sending him off after the meeting. Friday's meeting came after weeks of Washington and Pyongyang butting heads over the process of North Korea's denuclearization. At one point, President Trump nixed the much-anticipated meeting, citing North Korea's belligerent rhetoric. After a conciliatory statement from the North, Trump put summit preparations back on track, and since then, officials from both sides have continued to fine-tune logistical details while meeting at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom as well as in Singapore. And following his meeting with North Korea's former spy chief, President Trump revealed the two even discussed the matter of possibly ending the Korean War that's technically been going on for several decades. Trump, however, tried to downplay the significance of his upcoming meeting with Kim Jong-un, calling it a quote "getting-to-know-you meeting." He stressed he had never planned to sign anything on the day of the summit and emphasized that he's not expecting a quick and easy solution. "And I think it'll be a process. I never said it goes in one meeting. I think it's going to be a process. But the relationships are building, and that's a very positive thing." But rather, he said he expects more summits to come. South Korea welcomed Washington and Pyongyang's decision. According to a statement by the Blue House spokesperson, the Presidential Office said it will quote "excitedly but calmly look forward to the historic Singapore meeting." Hwang Hojun, Arirang News. Korean beauty standards affect obesity gender gap

한국 과체중 여아, 남아의 절반... 외모압박에 남

02:11
A new OECD report shows many advanced countries, including Korea,... are suffering from a growing obesity epidemic among children and adults. But what′s striking is the low rate of obesity among young Korean girls, compared to boys. Kim Ji-yeon reports on how double standards in beauty are intensifying this health problem. Walk through the bustling streets of Seoul and it′s only a matter of time before you spot a store window or billboard covered with a photo of a professional model. Turn on a TV and flip through a large portion of airtime is filled with thin, flawless looking celebrities on shows and in commercials. Such perfectly presented, photoshopped and edited content has become mainstream. So it′s no surprise an average Korean woman would point to these as the ideal. ″Big hips and tight waist-line.″ ″A woman with good curves.″ ″All this shows just how much emphasis Korean society puts on one′s appearance. And local experts say this trend is one of the main factors young girls are under social pressure to conform to idealized body standards,... which is considered more serious for Koreans compared to other nationalities.″ Recent OECD data shows that obesity rates among Korean children have been on a steady rise... with a big rate gap between the genders. The rate among Korean boys aged between five and 17 was around 26 percent in 2013. This is double the rate for Korean girls at 14 percent,... which was way below the OECD average. ″Children, teens and their parents are heavily affected by the prevalence of skinny models and celebrities in mass media. The standard of beauty is harsher for women than men,... which is why society is more lenient towards overweight boys than girls.″ The doctor warns extreme dieting at an early age can cause major health risks including osteoporosis, anemia and menstrual irregularity. So to have a healthy diet, it′s important to exercise daily and consume enough proteins, vitamins and minerals, while also cutting down on carbohydrate intake. Kim Ji-yeon, Arirang News.

Korean War veteran: "We must not forget the sacrifices of our soldiers"

02:51
Exactly... 64 years ago today,... on June 25th 1950, war broke out on the Korean Peninsula... when armed forces from North Korea smashed into South Korea. More than 600-thousand South Korean soldiers fought in the war,... and nearly a third of them are still alive today. Our Connie Lee met one of them,... who says... the war should never be forgotten. Around this time, every year... he can't help but think of his "brothers." "Although we fought in the war together, there are those still living today, while others died young. It still breaks my heart." 87-year-old Lee Chun-rak shows me the names of some of his veteran brothers from the Korean War, engraved in the black marble walls at one memorial hall. Lee's name is one of them. Rewind, 64 years back.... Lee was just a 23-year-old schoolteacher... when he had to trade in his books for combat boots, as he was drafted into the war. "Because they were short on soldiers, if you were young, you were enlisted into the army. That was September, 1950." At his home, evidence of his time in the war... are on the walls, in photographs and in letters. One letter dates back to 1953, written by one of his closest compatriots in his platoon-- a U.S. soldier who went by the name "Smitty." "There was an American soldier named, Smith. Kenneth Smith. We were together practically everywhere " Once the war ended and after a few letter exchanges here and there, they lost touch. He's been on the search for his American friend since then. "How great would it be to see each other after all these years?/ When I see him, I want to tell him that we're more than just brothers." Along with the memories of camaraderie are also the harrowing memories of war, that not only left hundreds of thousands dead, but separated thousands of Korean families, once that 38th parallel was drawn and divided the nation. Lee says he hopes the realities of the Korean War,... along with all the sacrifices that were made, will never be forgotten in the generations to come. "The fact that our country exists today, is from the sacrifices of the Korean War veterans who put their lives at risk to protect this nation. We cannot forget that." Connie Lee, Arirang News.

Incheon International Airport still hungry for excellence

02:25
최고를 향한 인천공항의 노력과 과제 Incheon International Airport has claimed many honors since it opened 15 years ago. But it seems Korea's gateway is still hungry for excellence. Hwang Hojun has this report. Incheon International Airport has been recognized as the best airport in the world by the Airports Council International for an eleventh straight year. It's the highest accolade an airport can receive. But there's more. The airport has also surpassed the 500-million mark for accumulated number of visitors... and has the eighth highest international passenger traffic in the world. "It means they're doing their job very well. And it is easy to navigate and people are helpful." The airport strives to impress its customers with amenities such as premium duty-free shops, a quality medical center, a movie theater and even a spa. Visitors can also experience Korean culture through the multiple cultural events scheduled throughout the day. However, a great amount of effort is necessary for the airport to maintain its high standard of service. "Complacency does not seem to be an issue. I'm coming back next year, looking forward to it, and I expect that the things that I like will still be here, and I'll be surprised by something new." The airport has also had to overcome its share of challenges. Earlier this year, there were a couple of embarrassing security breaches and luggage mishandling incidents. "The airport is already reaching its maximum capacity, which is the main cause of those mishaps. But we'll be able to prevent issues like these, as we'll get much more breathing room when the third phase of our construction project is done in 2017." The project includes a second terminal, which will allow the airport to support over 62 million passengers and a thousand flights a day. The airport has also signed an agreement to build a resort called Inspire, with completion set for 2020. The facility will include six-star hotels, theme parks, shopping centers and a casino -- all practically adjacent to the airport. "Winning the best airport service quality award for 11 consecutive years is an impressive accomplishment. But there are still hurdles to overcome, and Korea's flagship airport plans to continue to evolve and put the needs of its customers first. Hwang Hojun, Arirang News, Incheon." On Monday she had the opportunity to sit down with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Our Blue House correspondent Hwang Hojun reports. When she first visited India in July along with her husband, First Lady Kim Jung-sook's itinerary was mostly comprised of cultural events. China to develop own missile defense system

01:57
중국 독자 미사일 방어 체계 개발 확인 China's defense ministry has announced it's pushing ahead with plans to develop its own anti-missile system. The surprise move comes amid Beijing's staunch opposition to South Korea's recent decision to deploy a powerful U.S.-made missile defense system to counter North Korea's growing nuclear and missile threats. Kim Min-ji reports. It has been confirmed that the Chinese military is developing its own missile defense system. At a recent press briefing,... China's Defense Ministry spokesman said developing substantial capabilities for missile defense is necessary for the country to maintain national security. His remarks come in response to recent footage showing China's ground-based midcourse defense system successfully intercepting an incoming missile. The so-called GMD system can target and destroy ballistic missiles in space. Although the spokesman said the system is not targeting any specific country and will not affect international strategic stability -- it's seen as Beijing's way of showing that it's capable of countering the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense,... or THAAD, which is to be stationed in South Korea by 2017. Seoul and Washington recently announced they would deploy THAAD to Seongju, a county in the southern part of South Korea. China has strongly opposed the deployment, saying it infringes on its security interests,... vowing to take necessary action. "We will closely follow the related actions of the U.S. and South Korea and consider necessary measures to safeguard China's national security." However, some military experts say there's a wide gulf between the U.S. and China in terms of missile defense technology. They say Beijing's system lacks real battle testing,... which raises questions about its maturity and reliability. Kim Min-ji, Arirang News. N. Korean leader Kim Jong-un arrives in Singapore ahead of summit with Trump

03:28
김정은 싱가포르 도착, 저녁엔 싱가포르 리셴룽 총리와 회담 The stage is nearly set in Singapore. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has now landed in the city-state, and his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, is on his way from Canada, having left the G7 Summit early. And with only two days left until their historic meeting,... the International Media Center in Singapore also opened on Sunday. Our Lee Ji-won is on the line from the media center... as part of our special Singapore coverage team. Ji-won, give us the latest. Devin, according to local media, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un landed in Singapore at around 2-thirty in the afternoon local time. Kim had left North Korea at around 8-thirty in the morning on a Chinese private jet that took him to Changi Airport. He was welcomed upon his arrival by the host city's foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, and headed straight to his hotel, the St. Regis. Now, Kim will be meeting with the Singaporean Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong , sometime later today, but we don't yet know the exact time. Donald Trump, meanwhile, is currently on his way to the summit. After attending the Group of Seven meeting in Canada, he boarded Air Force One on Saturday, and is scheduled to arrive at Singapore's Paya Lebar ( ) Airbase later, at 8-thirty five p.m. and go to the Shangri-La Hotel, according to the White House. Trump will have his meeting with the Singaporean Prime Minister on Monday. Now Ji-won, with the summit just around the corner, we've heard the atmosphere has changed a lot there. Can you tell us more about that? Yes Devin, firstly, security has gotten much more strict. Singapore had designated areas around the hotels for the two leaders as "Special Event Areas" from Sunday through this coming Thursday. And that means restrictions on the use of drones, flags, banners and flammable materials, as well as spot checks and inspections of vehicles and people passing by. There have also been security check points set up at the entrances of the hotels, as well as road blocks. And with the delegations arriving at the hotels,... they've been surrounded by dozens of reporters and even local residents and tourists,... hoping to get a glimpse of a historic moment. It's actually been quite a positive vibe. I think everyone is quite positive about it no one is complaining. I think everyone is quite honored that such an important event is being held in our city. Now, another "Special Event Area" is Sentosa Island, where the Capella Hotel is located. Capella is where the summit will begin on June 12th at 9 a.m., local time -- that's just two days from today. Now there are three ways of getting onto the island -- by bridge, cablecar and monorail -- and we are told that they will remain open, but visitors and vehicles are subject to spot checks. But it seems that the tighter security isn't affecting tourists on the island too much, as of now. Now Devin, on top of these new rules and regulations coming into effect,... the International Media Center also opened earlier in the day,... hosting some 2-thousand reporters from around the world. It's where I'm connecting to you guys right now,... and it's huge, clean and quite convenient for us to work in. The Singaporean Prime Minister visited the place earlier,... with a swarm of journalists around him. But despite our efforts, he did not mention anything about his upcoming meeting with Kim or Trump. Now I'll make sure to give you the latest on that when the time comes,... but for now, that's all from me. N. Korean soldier walks across DMZ to defect

북한군 10대병사 비무장지대 통해 귀순

01:34
A North Korean soldier... in his late teens... defected to the South earlier today. South Korean authorities say the soldier had walked across the D-M-Z, which is the heavily-guarded military demarcation line between the two Koreas. Won Ji-hyun has this story. It was around 8 o'clock this morning that a young soldier from North Korea was found on South Korean soil. An official from Seoul's defense ministry says the soldier in his late teens walked across the eastern side of the inter-Korean border... to end up in Hwacheon of South Korea's Gangwon-do province. Although the soldier had crossed what's known to be one of the most heavily militarized zones in the world, the authority said that no fires were exchanged in the incident. But it did raise tensions on the border, as South Korean soldiers prepared for a possible confrontation with the North during the crossing. The soldier expressed his will to defect through a South Korean guard post and told authorities that he wanted to escape the harsh reality in North Korea, which included regular beatings. Although hundreds of North Koreans try to flee their homeland every year, it is rare for them to cross the land border, as it's guarded by tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides. In fact, this was the first time in almost three years that a North Korean defector actually crossed the DMZ to get to the South. The young soldier from this morning is still under investigation. South Korean authorities said they will release more details on Tuesday. Won Ji-hyun, Arirang News.
